Introduction This manual describes detailed instructions for handling of and basic operation of Digital Photo Printer CHC-S1245. We will describe this product as “the printer” in the manual. Read this manual thoroughly to understand how to install and operate the printer before using it. Notice ● Keep this manual near the printer and operators can refer to this manual periodically. ● In case, lost or damaged this manual, contact your dealers. ● In the case of transfer, do not forget to put this manual together with the printer. Read this manual before operating the printer to ensure to have proper use. ◆In this manual, there are notes that require special attention. For your safety operation, Safety notices are separated as follows; Warning: Inappropriate handling can cause the death or serious wound. Caution: Inappropriate handling can cause the wound for the users and/or cause the physical damage. Attention: Explanation about the cause of the trouble and the environmental condition. ◆It is difficult to forecast all the danger in setting and use of the printer. Therefore, warnings in this Operation Manual, in the other documents on the printer cannot cover all the cases. In case of performing the operation or maintenance which are not described in this manual, all the concern for the safety have to be taken care of at the customer side. ◆Operations and the notification for the maintenance described in this manual and other documents are for the proper use of the printer. In case of using the printer for the other purpose, all the concern for the safety has to be taken care of at the customer side. ◆Do not perform the operation which are prohibited in this manual and other documents. 1-1 Chapter 1. Important Safety Instruction Environments To use the printer safety, please pay attention to the followings: Caution: Do not let children to touch the printer or the cables. It can cause accidents or electric shock. Caution: Do not place the printer under humid or dusty place. It can cause a fire, electric shock or printer problem. Do not place the printer with dust, sand and high humidity such as bathing place, bathroom, hot spring, on the street. Caution: Do not place the printer on rickety place and/or inclined place. Printer may fall down or tumble and it can cause injury. Attention: Do not place the printer under the low temperature such as ski gelande, skating rink or open-air with direct sunlight. Warning: Do not put vase, flowerpot, and cup with water inside or metric items. In case the water spilt or metric items fall into the printer, it can cause the fire and electric shock. Warning: Do not block the openings of the printer. In case, the opening blocked, the heat will remain inside and it can cause the fire. Warning: Do not insert or fall the metallic items or flammable items into the printer through the openings of the printer, it can cause the fire and electric shock. 1-2 Chapter 1. Important Safety Instruction Handling Instruction In handling the printer, please pay attention to the followings; Warning: Lift the printer from its box and put it onto a flat table or desk. Warning: At nearly 28Kg, the printer is too heavy to be lifted by one person. Also please take a good care of your hands and fingers when lifting the printer from the box. Warning: The printer is heavier at front side than rear side so that please be careful in transportation. The printer must be handled by more than two persons during the transportation. Warning: Be careful when you transport the printer on the slippery floor. Warning: In case you drop the printer, firstly turn off the power of the printer and remove the power cord, then contact the dealers or service center. To use the printer without any checking, can cause the fire or electric shock. Attention: At installation, appropriate interface cable will be required with your computer. 1-3 Chapter 1. Important Safety Instruction Handling Instruction - Continued from previous page Warning: Secure the power cable firmly. Warning: The thermal head reaches high temperature during operation but this is normal. Do not touch the thermal head. Attention: Touching the surface of the thermal directly can cause the damage to thermal head. When a hard object get into the printer, it can cause the damage to the printer mechanism. In such case, please do not use the printer. Warning: Do not attempt to service the printer beyond the instruction specified in this document. In case, impossible to recover from the problem, please contact to the dealers or service center. Warning: Make sure to use the power cable supplied with the printer. If your facility can not provide three-wire grounded power receptacles, it can cause the fire and electric shock in case of electric leakage. Also it can cause harmful interference to radio or television. In case, impossible to have grounded power, please contact the dealers or service center. 1-4 Chapter 1. Important Safety Instruction Handling Instruction for Consumable and Printed Output In handling the ink ribbon, paper and printed output, please pay attention to the followings; Attention: Paper Handling - Use the paper specified by Shinko Electric. - Store the paper flat. - Store the paper in a dry and dark place to avoid the direct Sunlight. (Temperature less than 30℃, Humidity: lass than 60%). - Do not touch the paper surface before printing to avoid the fingerprints. Attention: Ink Ribbon Handling - Use the ink ribbon specified by Shinko Electric. - Store the ink ribbon in cool place to avoid the direct sunlight. (Temperature less than 30°C, Humidity: lass than 60%) Attention: Printed Output Handling - Store the printed output in a dark place to avoid the direct sunlight. - Store the printed output away from the organic fluid such as benzine, thinner and alcohol which may change or deteriorate the colors. Caution: When abandon the ink ribbon, please handle it as harmful industrial waste. Caution: Be careful not to injure your hands with the paper edge when handling paper. 1-5 Chapter 1. Important Safety Instruction (MEMO) 1-6 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Procedure for Unpacking and Set up This chapter explains the unpacking and set up of the printer. Before proceeding to this chapter, please make sure to read Chapter 1. Important Safety Instruction. Unpacking Procedure 1. Open the carton box and take out the printer and accessories. 2. Check the name of the each part and function of the printer. 3. Take out the protect materials for transportation. 4. Install the dust box. 5. Install the print catcher. 6. Load the ink ribbon in the printer. 7. Set the paper to the paper flange. Set the paper flange to the printer. 8. Connect the USB cable. 9. Connect power cable. 10.Turn on the power of the printer. 2-1 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Unpacking At first, check the contents of the printer box. Installing and Set Up Function of Each Part Name Upper Cover Upper Cover Open Lever Function This cover may be opened to exchange the ink ribbon inspect and clean the thermal head and to remove the jammed paper. <Caution> Upper cover must be opened and closed gently. Thermal head is mounted inside this upper cover. Pull this lever to open the upper cover. <Caution> Do not pull this lever during printing. Operation Panel Control buttons, LCD and printer status display lamps are located on the panel. Power Switch This switch turns on/off the power of the printer. When the “|” marked side of the switch is pressed, the power is turned on. When the “○” marked side of the switch is pressed, the power is turned off. <Caution> Once the printer is turned off, wait at least 3 seconds before turning it on again. Paper Cover Open this cover to replace paper in the paper box. <Caution> Open and close this cover carefully. Power Connector To be used to connect the power cord. USB Connector To be used to connect the USB cable. Thermal Head Print Head for thermal transfer printing. <Caution> Do not touch the thermal head, because it gets hot when printing and also it can cause the damage to the thermal head. Platen Roller Rubber roller to feed the paper. Dust Box Piece of paper come out from each print will be corrected into this box. Make sure to dispose the dust every time exchange the paper. Cleaning Roller Rubber roller to remove the dust on the paper. Located in front side and rear side. Filter This filter avoids the dust in the air to get into to the printer. 2-6 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Removing the Protective Materials for transportation To avoid the vibration and shock during the transportation, protective materials are attached to the printer. Attention: Please keep these protective materials. When transporting the printer, make sure to attach these materials to avoid the damage for the printer. 1. Peel off the two tapes which fixing the upper cover. 2. Open the upper cover. Pull upper cover open lever. Attention:Do not open the upper cover abruptly or forcefully past the 90° angle. 2-7 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up 3. Take away the thermal head protective air cushion. Protective air cushion 4. Peel off the two tapes that fix the paper cover. 5. Take away silica gel. Silica gel 2-8 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up 6. Install the dust box. Dust box 7.Install the print catcher. Hook the lugs of the print catcher on the paper ejection slot to install it. Attention: The printer can be used without installing the print catcher. the Print application. If the print catcher for 8x12 size (with the adjustment screw on the back side) is used, loosen the screw and adjust the position of the print stopper. ・8x10 size: The print stopper is not pulled out. (at the position of delivery) ・8x12 size: The print stopper is pulled out completely. Adjustment Screw After setting the print stopper, tighten the screw and fix the print stopper. If the print stopper is set improperly, the paper jam may occur. Caution: The print catcher can stack up to 50 sheets for 8x10 size paper and up to 30 sheets for 8x12 size paper. If more is printed, be sure to take out these prints from the print catcher. Please take out a paper one by one when: 1) Paper is ejected during paper loading 2) Printing 8 x 6, 8 x 5, and 8 x 4 sizes 2-9 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Loading Ink Ribbon 1.Open the upper cover. Pull the upper cover open lever. Attention: Do not open the upper cover abruptly or forcefully past the 90° angle. 2. Remove used ink ribbon. The ink ribbon can be removed by pushing it to the right. (this step is not necessary at the first set up procedure) Attention: When abandon the ink ribbon, please handle it as harmful industrial waste. Caution: Thermal Head reaches high temperature just after printing. Do not touch directly by hand. When fingerprint stick to the heat element, it can damage the thermal head. Do not touch directly by hand. Be careful not to be hurt by the projections of the printer. 2-10 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up 3. Load a ink ribbon into the printer. Set the supply side (in which unused ribbon is rolled up) of the ink ribbon to the front side. If the ink ribbon is not set in correct orientation, it cannot be loaded into the printer. Push the ink ribbon core into the right ink ribbon core receiver. 4. Set the ink ribbon core in the left ink ribbon core receiver. Align the notch of ink ribbon core with the projection of the ink ribbon core receiver. 5. Turn the knob of supply side of ink ribbon to the front side to take away the slack of the ink ribbon. Attention: The slack of the ink ribbon can cause paper jam. Knob 2-11 Be sure to take away the slack when loading the ink ribbon. Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up 6. Close the upper cover. Pressing the center, close the upper cover slowly and confirm it cricks. Caution: Take care not to put the fingers when you close upper cover. 2-12 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Loading Paper 1. Rewind the paper into the paper box. If the paper is set inside the printer, push the PAPER REWIND button on the operation panel. PAPER REWIND button The printer automatically rewinds the paper into the paper box.(this step is not necessary at the first set up procedure) 2. Open the paper cover. Attention:Do not open the paper cover abruptly. 3. Remove the used paper and insert the new one. (this step is not necessary at the first set up procedure) Attention:When abandon the paper, please handle it as harmful industrial waste. 2-13 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up 4. Prepare the new paper. Take away the vinyl cover for the protection. 5. Insert the paper flange (with gear, blue) into the paper. Align the notch of the paper with the projection of the paper fFlange. The opposite side of the paper has no notch. correctly. Align them Projection 6. Insert the paper flange (without gear, gray) into the opposite side of the paper. 2-14 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up 7. Load the new paper into the paper cassette. Installing and Set Up 10. Using the paper feeding Knob, set the paper edge to the red line. Paper Feeding Knob Red line Attention: Make sure to dispose the dust every time exchange the paper. 11. Close the paper cover slowly. 12. Push the PAPER SET button on the operation panel. The printer automatically loads the paper. PAPER SET button Attention: During loading, the paper part that cannot be used for printing is ejected. Do not touch the paper until it is completely ejected. 2-16 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Connecting Power Cord Connect the power cord according to the safety instructions below. Insert the power cord attached to the printer into the power connector located on the rear of the printer. Warning: Make sure to turn off the power of the printer before inserting the power cord. Warning: Must use the power cord attached with the printer. If your facility can not provide three-wire grounded power receptacles, it can cause the fire and electric shock in case of electric leakage. In case, impossible to have grounded power, please contact the dealers or service center. Warning: Make sure to insert the power cord correctly. If not, it can cause the fire or the printer problem. Warning: Do not insert or remove the power cord with wet hands. It can cause the electric leakage. Warning: Do not make any damage or any modification to the power cord. Put the heavy items on the power cord, give a strong pull to the power cord and twist the power cord can cause the fire and electric shock. 2-17 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Warning: When moving the printer, make sure to turn off the power of the printer, remove the power cord in order to have no connection with other devices. Otherwise, the power cord might be damaged and it can cause the fire and electric shock. Also there is a possibility to fall down caught by the cord. Warning: In case of not using the printer for a long time, remove the power cord for safety. Warning: Avoid “piled up” connection. It can cause the fire and electric shock. 2-18 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up Connecting USB Cable Connect the USB cable from the personal computer to the USB connector located on the left rear side of the printer. Be sure to insert the USB cable all the way. Attention: To remove the USB cable, make sure that the printer is in the waiting status. Removing the USB cable during data transfer may not be able to print data correctly. 2-19 Chapter 2. Installing and Set Up (MEMO) 2-20 Chapter 3. Operation Panel Power Switch Power Switch is located on the right rear and turn on when press to upper (“|”) and turn off when press to lower (“○”). | ○ Operation Panel The buttons, LEDs and LCD display on the operation panel are shown below. Operation Panel LED Display The LED Display has the following meanings. Name Color Description Power Lamp Orange Light when power is ON. Ready Lamp Green Light when ready to print. Error Lamp Red Light when error occurs. Operation Button Individual Operation Buttons have the following function. Name Paper Set Button Paper Rewind/Clear Button Menu Button Function Press this button to feed the paper into the printer from the paper cassette. Press this button to rewind the paper back to the Paper Cassette. In case of Set Up Mode, escape from the Menu by pressing this button. In waiting status, move into Set Up Mode by pressing this button. Also use this button to select the menu in Set Up Mode. Enter Button Press this button to enter the menu in Set Up Mode. + Button By pressing this button together with -button for more than 1 second, printer will start initializing. -Button By pressing this button together with + button for more than 1 second, printer will start initializing. 3-2 Chapter 3. Operation Panel 3-3 Chapter 3. Operation Panel LCD Display The LCD Display indicates the following printer status. LCD Display Description Ready:8×12 Printable status Display is changed depending on ink ribbon being set in the printer. Initializing Printer is in initialization. Winding Ribbon Winding the ink ribbon. Printing Printing. Thermal Protect Temperature of Thermal Head gets higher than the specified level. Feeding Paper Loading the paper from the Paper Cassette. Winding Paper Rewinding the paper in the printer back to the Paper Cassette. Ready:8×10 3-4 Chapter 3. Operation Panel Set Up Mode With Set Up Mode, following test print and printer situation and print mode and Gloss/Matte mode, and cleaning print can be checked. ・Performing test print ・Check the number of remaining paper ・Check the number of total print ・Check the revision number of printer control firmware ・Set the Print Mode ・Set the Gloss/Matte Mode ・Performing cleaning print Ready:8×10 To enter to Set Up Mode, press Menu Button when ready status. To escape from Set Up Mode, press Clear Button. Test Print Mode Comes to Test Print Mode. By pressing Enter Button, test print will start. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. Remain = XXX / YYY (to the next page) 3-5 Comes to the number of remaining paper mode.XXX in the display shows the number of remaining paper and YYY shows the total number of the copies in one roll. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. Caution: The correct number of remaining paper is not displayed in the followings. *In case that used roll paper, not new paper, is set. *In case that the ink ribbon is changed for the different size. Chapter 3. Operation Panel (from the previous page) Printed = XXXXXX This figure shows the total number of the copies after the shipment from the factory. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. MAIN Firm = XXXX This figure shows the revision number of main control firmware mode. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. DSP Firm = XXXX This figure shows the DSP control firmware revision. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. Display is changed as below depending on the revision number of firmware. 1. up to [ MAIN Firm = 3、DSP Firm = 1 ] → (Return to Test Print Mode) 2. Press ENTER button to shift the menu of change setting of Print Mode. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. Mode:Standard Pressing MENU button, the Print Mode is changed. Mode:Fine Pressing ENTER button, the LCD is flashing in a moment and Print Mode is set. Press ENTER button to shift the menu of change setting of Gloss/Matte Mode. Press MENU button to shift the next menu. Mode:Glossy Pressing MENU button, the Gloss/Matte Mode is changed. Mode:Matte Press MENU button to shift the Level Adjust menu. Level Adjust=*** (to the next page) Pressing ENTER button, the LCD is flashing in a moment and Gloss/Matte Mode is set. ‘Level Adjust’ menu is displayed only when ‘Matte mode’ menu is selected. ‘***’ is setting value.The initial value for ‘***’ is ‘0’. This value is changed by + button or – button. The adjustable range is from –25 to +25. ’-‘ means more gloss and ‘+’ means less gloss. 3-8 Chapter 3. Operation Panel (from the 3-6 page or the previous page) ※Displayed from firmware revision [ MAIN Firm = 10、DSP Firm = 6 ] Cleaning Print Pressing Enter Button, Cleaning print will start. Now Cleaning After Cleaning Print is done, Initializing automatically starts, and move into Ready status. It takes approximately 2 minutes. Caution: Cleaning Print uses the paper and ribbon for one picture. (Return to Test Print Mode) 3-9 Chapter 4. Routine Maintenance Cleaning of Thermal Head, Platen, Cleaning Roller By using thermal transfer technology, daily maintenance is not really necessary if the printer is being use properly. However, in order to keep the best print quality, it is recommended to do the Thermal Head, Platen and Cleaning Roller once in a month. cleaning of 1. Open Upper Cover. Pull Upper Cover Open Lever. Attention: Do not open the Upper Cover abruptly or forcefully past the 90° angle. 2. Using gauze, clean the heat element (glass bar) of the thermal head with isopropyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol. Caution: ・Thermal Head reaches high temperature just after printing. Do not touch directly by hand. ・When fingerprint stick to the heat element, it can damage the Thermal Head. Close Upper Cover Pressing the center, close the Upper Cover slowly and confirm it cricks. Caution 4-3 : Take care not to put the fingers when you close upper cover. Chapter 4. Routine Maintenance Cleaning of Outer Cabinet Wipe the printer outer cabinet with a soft cloth. If the stains are not removed, wet the cloth and apply weakened neutral Detergent to it. Warning: In case, the foreign substance get into the printer, turn off the power of printer, remove the power cord and contact the dealers or service center. Continuous use of the printer under such condition can cause the fire and electric shock. Warning: Continuous use under the abnormal condition such as high temperature, smoke and strange smell can cause the fire and electric shock.Turn off the power and make sure to remove the power cord, then contact the dealers or service center. Caution: Do not use volatile solvents or spray insecticide on the printer outer cabinet. Otherwise, discoloration or crack may result. Cleaning of Filter If the dust collects on the openings, clean it with vacuum cleaner. Filter 4-4 Chapter 5. Error Handling Error Message and Corrective Action When the error happens, error message will be displayed on LCD on the operation panel. Table below shows the status and how to handle it. Error Handling 7. Open the paper cover to confirm that the paper tip is not off the paper roller, and then load the paper again. [In the case of unused paper] 8. Remove the ink ribbon. If the ink ribbon is entangled around the roller, removing the ink ribbon immoderately can cut it. Holding the ink ribbon directly by hand, pull it out slowly. Attention: Pulling out the ink ribbon hastily can cause a printer failure. Be sure to pull it out slowly. 9. Take out the jammed paper. If the paper is entangled around the roller, take out the paper slowly. Attention: Pulling out the paper hastily can cause a printer failure. Be sure to pull it out slowly. 5-4 Chapter 5. Error Handling 10. Use the scissors to cut the winkles or printed portion of the paper. Caution: ・Thermal head reaches high temperature just after printing. Do not touch directly by hand. ・When fingerprint stick to the heat element, it can damage the Thermal head. Attention: ・If the printer continues to be used without cutting the wrinkles or printed portion of the paper, the paper may jam again or the ink ribbon can be cut during printing. Be sure to cut the wrinkles or printed portion of the paper. ・Cut the paper straightly in crosswise direction. 11. Close the upper cover. Turn on the power switch. 13. Rewind the paper into the paper box. PAPER REWIND button Push the "PAPER REWIND" button on the operation panel. The printer automatically rewinds the paper into the paper box. If the message "Paper Jam" still appears after rewinding the paper, push the PAPER REWIND button again. 14. Open the upper cover and insert the ink ribbon cassette again. Follow the instruction of Loading Paper in Chapter 2. Attention: If paper jam happens often, please contact the dealers or service center. 5-6 Chapter 5. Error Handling Streaking in the Printed Output -Straight line for the printing direction ・Can be happened due to the dirt on Thermal Head. Clean the Thermal Head according to the instruction in Chapter 4. Routine Maintenance. ・In case, the line will not disappear after the cleaning of Thermal Head, please contact the dealers or service center. Heat element may be out. -Streaking happens as small dots or dirt(spots). ・Can be happened due to the dirt on Cleaning Roller. Clean the Cleaning Roller according to the instruction in Chapter 4. Routine Maintenance. ・Can be happened due to the dirt inside of Paper Cover. Using gauze, clean the inside of Paper Cover with isopropyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol. ・Clean the cleaning roller and the inside of the Paper Cover (bottom plate, all of the inside of the cover, etc.). After that, Cleaning Print can be implemented in accordance with Chapter 3, Operation Panel, and this streaking can be improved. Attention: ・Cleaning Print uses the paper and ribbon for one picture. ・Cleaning Print will be supported from Ver. [MAIN Firm = 10、DSP Firm = 6] 5-7 Chapter 5. Error Handling Ink Ribbon and Paper Not Detected Correctly -In the case that the printed color is not match to the required color. -In the case that Incorrect Ribbon message appear on LCD. -In the case that Ribbon Empty appeared on LCD though ink ribbon is correctly inserted. -In the case that the error message "Paper Empty" appears although the printer is not out of paper. If ribbon mark sensor and/or paper sensor is not clean, ink ribbon and paper will be detected incorrectly. Clean the ribbon mark sensor, the ribbon mark sensor reflecting sticker and the paper sensor according to the following instruction. If can not be recovered from the error after the cleaning, please contact the dealers or service center. Sensor may be damaged. 1. Turn off the power of the printer. 2. Open the upper cover. Error Handling Power Supply Interrupted during Printing In case, power supply interrupted during the printing, Thermal Head will be kept pushing to Platen. Laving this situation for a long time, shape of Platen can be warped. In order to avoid this situation, please follow the instruction below. 1. Turn off the power of the printer. 2.
