Game Preview / Week 9
C
oming off their bye week, the Tomcats will head
to Bethany, W.Va. Saturday to face the Bison in
a Presidents’ Athletic Conference clash.
Bethany is coming off a tough 7-6 loss to Westminster,
in which the Titans scored the game-winning touchdown on a blocked punt with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
Despite the loss, Bethany’s offense is armed with two
of the top players in the PAC in quarterback Matt
Grimard and receiver Matt Blinn. Grimard leads the
conference with an average of 320.9 yards per game
in the air while Blinn leads the conference in average
receptions per game (8.9) and receiving yards per game
(119.9).
Leaders of the PAC in time of possession, the Tomcats
can limit Grimard and Blinn by controlling the tempo of
the game with its third-ranked rushing offense, which
averages 181.1 yards per game on the season.
Josh Potter is the third-leading rusher in the conference with 550 yards on the season, and freshman running
back Josh Wannamaker is coming off his best game
with 78 yards against a stingy Thomas More defense.
In addition to Potter and Wannamaker, starting quarterback Ryan Radke is also a major threat on the
ground. He has run for 261 yards on the season and
averages 5.8 yards per carry.
After battling the Bison this Saturday, the Tomcats will
host the Westminster Titans on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the
first home night football game in Thiel College history.
Kickoff at Alumni Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

Thomas More 42, Thiel 21
GREENVILLE, Pa. – Senior running back Rich
Kolesar scored a 2-yard touchdown run early in
the fourth quarter to get the Thiel Tomcats within
a touchdown of Thomas More College Saturday
during Senior Parent Recognition Day at Alumni
Stadium. Unfortunately, the Tomcats would get
no closer, and the Saints went on to win the
Presidents’ Athletic Conference contest, 42-21.
On their first play from scrimmage after Kolesar’s
touchdown, the Saints reclaimed their 14-point
lead when quarterback Jensen Gebhardt hit
Goose Cohorn on a 63-yard touchdown pass.

Thomas More went on to score one more
touchdown on the day, this one with 5:14 left in
regulation, when Domonique Hayden scored on
a 55-yard run.
Hayden had a tremendous game for the Saints.
He ran for 252 yards on 27 carries and scored
four touchdowns on the ground on runs of 27-,
58-, 9- and 55-yards.
The Saints opened scoring Saturday. After
forcing Thiel three-and-out to open the game,
Gebhardt threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to
Bobby Leonard for the first score of the game.
Thiel answered on its next drive when Josh
Potter finished off a 7-play drive that consumed
nearly 3:30 of clock with a 55-yard touchdown
scamper.
The Saints held a 28-7 lead at the half, however,
behind two of Hayden’s long touchdown runs.
Thiel played determined and opportunistically
in the second half. After forcing the Saints to
go three-and-out during the first possession of
the third quarter, Ryan Radke threw a 75-yard
touchdown pass to Tim Walker to cut Thomas
More’s lead down to 28-14.
The Tomcats scored again early in the fourth
quarter on Kolesar’s 2-yarder, but the Saints
controlled the remainder of the game.
Gebhardt completed 17 of 28 passes for 266
yards. He threw two touchdown passes. He
also ran for 64 yards on seven carries. Radke
completed eight passes for 137 yards. He threw
one touchdown pass and also ran for 83 yards
on 15 carries.
Josh Wannamaker ran 15 times for 78 yards
while Potter carried 12 times for 62 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run.
Thomas More’s Leonard caught six passes for
113 yards while Cohorn caught four passes for
98 yards. Walker led Thiel with two catches for
82 yards, one of which was a 75-yard touchdown
catch.
Thiel freshman safety Travell Sherrod recorded
two interceptions in the game. They were the
Page 2
first two interceptions of his young career, and
he became the first Tomcat this season to notch
two picks in one game.
Walt Litwin led Thiel’s defense with nine tackles
while Adam Rauch recorded eight stops for
Thomas More.
Thiel vs. Bethany 2012
GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2012) – Quarterback
Matt Grimard ran for two touchdowns and threw
for a touchdown to lead the visiting Bethany
Bison to a 26-13 win over the Thiel Tomcats at
Alumni Stadium.
The Tomcats held the momentum early in the
game after they mounted an 8-play, 53-yard
drive on their opening possession to take an
early 7-0 lead. Freshman running back Josh
Potter highlighted the drive with seven carries
for 27 yards before quarterback Andrew Smith
scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 11:11
remaining in the first quarter.
Bethany threatened to score on two drives in the
second quarter. The first of those drives, which
began on the last play of the first quarter, ended
at the Thiel 31-yard line when Grimard’s fourthdown pass intended for Ed Holmes fell incomplete. On their next possession, the Bison drove
down to the Thiel 14-yard line, but Grimard’s
pass on third-and-goal was intercepted at the
goal line by Thiel defensive back Julian McLean,
who returned the ball to the 17.
The Tomcats picked up one first down on their
ensuing possession on a 24-yard run by Potter,
but the drive stalled at the Thiel 41-yard line.
Bethany went on to score on its next possession, capping off a 10-play, 79-yard drive with 36
seconds left in the first half when Grimard scored
on a 14-yard run. The extra point attempt was
no good, however, and the Tomcats held a slim
1-point lead at the half.
The Bison drove down to the Thiel 19-yard line
on the opening possession of the second half but
could not convert a crucial fourth-and-4 play to
keep possession.
The Tomcats responded with a long drive of their
own on the following drive but, like the Bison the
series before, could not convert an important
fourth-and-4 play at the Bethany 22.
After Bethany went 3-and-out on its next series,
Thiel mounted another long drive that appeared
to end with a Jon Fennick 36-yard field goal.
However, Bethany was flagged for roughing
the kicker on the play, which gave the Tomcats
a fresh set of downs at the 10-yard line. The
drive was halted two plays later, however, when
Jordan Joyce intercepted a Smith pass.
Bethany’s offense then embarked on what would
eventually count as the game-winning drive.
Grimard ran for a first down on the drive and
2013 Thiel College Football
thiel college game notes
threw for two first downs before scoring on a
5-yard run to cap the 12-play, 87-yard drive.
Later in the fourth, Grimard went on to throw a
43-yard touchdown pass to Eric Blinn and Phil
Acrie scored a touchdown on an 11-yard run.
Thiel’s offense was able to mount a good drive
late in the fourth quarter that ended with a
17-yard pass from Smith to receiver Zane Garza.
Tra(y)versing the secondary
Freshman free safety Travell Sherrod made his
presence felt against Thomas More with a pair
of interceptions. He became the first Tomcat to
pick off two passes in one game since Bobby
Shew accomplished the feat on Nov. 14, 2009.
Two in the top 10
Running back Josh Potter is the third leading
rusher in the PAC with 550 yards on the season.
Freshman running back Josh Wannamaker is
also in the top 10. He ranks seventh in the conference with 369 yards on the season.
Blinn there, done that
Bethany receiver Eric Blinn leads the PAC
in average catches per game (8.9) and yards
receiving per game (119.9). He ranks fifth and
eighth in Division III, respectively, in the two
categories.
No. 1 returner
Tim Canady leads the PAC with an average
kickoff return of 27.4 yards. He ranks 27th in all
of Division III in the category.
Radke to Walker
Ryan Radke’s 75-yard touchdown pass to Tim
Walker against Thomas More was the longest
passing play and longest scoring play of the
season.
Claw marks
The Tomcats lead the conference in time of possession with an average of 33:06 per game. ...
Thiel is the second least penalized team in the
conference, averaging just 39.7 penalty yards
per game. ... The Tomcats are plus-four on the
season in turnover margin, which is the third
best margin in the PAC.

About the Presidents’
Athletic Conference
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic
Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.
Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany
College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove
City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College,
Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson
College, Waynesburg University and Westminster
College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this
day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the
PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is
a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.
The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with
the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA
Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as its began
provisional membership status in NCAA Division III
in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva
College, became the conference’s ninth member and
began league play as it started NCAA Division III
provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham College
(now University) became the league’s 10th member,
also in 2007-08. In 2012, the PAC voted to add
Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve
University as affiliate members in football beginning in
2014.
The PAC annually crowns champions and awards AllConference status in 19 league sports. Head coaches
select All-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country, All-PAC accolades
are based upon performances at the conference championships. PAC championship teams receive automatic
qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III
national championship events.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s AllSports Trophies to the schools which perform best
across the board in PAC competition.
True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous
Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 853
student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll,
which recognizes student-athletes who attain a GPA
of 3.6 or above.
