The previous page is really more of a list of parts, it doesn’t even begin to cover all of the work that has gone into this
truck. I have spent a lot of time and made a lot of changes trying to get this truck setup to stage and launch well, as
2WD trucks don’t benefit from the mechanical advantage of using the front axle and transfer case to hold the truck
still while staging.
One of the ways I’ve worked on this was to develop a custom “2-step” type device, similar to a 2-step rev limiter in a
gasoline application. While this device doesn’t limit RPM, it does limit throttle position voltage to the PCM. During
staging, when the button on the steering wheel is depressed, this device limits the voltage from the TPS sensor to the
PCM and prevents it from exceeding a pre-set level (which is adjustable). This allows the driver to hold the throttle
pedal on the floor and launch the truck by just releasing the steering wheel button and the brake pedal at the same
time. It also makes the staging TPS signal very repeatable, which helps with consistency.
A more recent addition to the Launch Control formula was the blow-off valve. Since 2WD trucks like to creep
forward out of the beam once the boost starts coming up and the engine starts making more torque, we plumbed in
a BOV and tied it into the steering wheel button. At the same time that the above 2-step limiter is holding the TPS
voltage down, the solenoid on the BOV control circuit plumbing switches and allows the BOV to open. When the
button is released, the solenoid on the BOV switches positions and the boost pressure is applied to the top of the
BOV to close it and keep it shut. We never got this fully dialed in at the last race, but the last datalog shows that
boost was flatlined at 8psi during staging (which is a bit low and needs to be adjusted). I believe that getting the
boost to around 12-15psi during staging should be the target, as more than 15psi and the torque starts trying to push
the truck out of the beams.
There is a bunch of datalogging in this truck. The PCS D200 logs EVERY parameter from the PCS transmission
controller, so you will always be able to see everything that the transmission was doing or was being told to do. I
also have extra sensors connected to the D200 to log the following:










1st & 2nd Stage Intake Air Temps (post intercooler and post high pressure turbo)
Pre-Turbo Exhaust Temperature (driver side header collector)
1st & 2nd Stage Boost Pressure
Exhaust Backpressure
Injection Control Pressure (using the factory sensor)
Ambient Temperature
GPS Location and Speed using PCS GPS Module
PCS Accelerometer Data – Launch Gs Primarily
Fuel Pressure
Nitrous Activation (not connected yet but datalogger channel left open for it)
There is also datalogging through the DashDAQ, which is connected by USB cable to the QuarterHorse emulator. This
is high speed datalogging (100 samples / sec) direct from the PCM (NOT through the OBD-II port). The DashDAQ logs:






Injection Timing (electrical – commanded) – This is ACTUAL total commanded timing
Injection Pulse Width
Injection Control Pressure (desired and actual)
Injection Pressure Regulator Duty Cycle
Engine RPM
Throttle Position
This truck has run 11.30s at 119-120mph on fuel only. Using the nitrous system (even a small shot) to help launch
the truck would pretty easily put it into the high 10s. I think that this truck would be perfect and competitive in the
new NHRDA 10.90 class with just a little spray on the launch. This wouldn’t be pushing the limits and should result in
being able to just show up and race at most events. Of course, it was built for spray, so if someone were so inclined,
they could go to a larger injector and more spray and push the truck deep into the 10s. There is a lot of potential for
someone with the time.
While I am most interested in selling the truck WHOLE, particularly considering the work that has gone into it, I fully
understand that there are going to be a limited number of people that can afford to buy a complete race vehicle. As
such, I will entertain offers that involve parting the truck out. That said, I am NOT interested in selling small
components that will make it harder to sell larger ones…until such time as the larger components have sold.
For example, I will NOT sell the Fuel Injectors, Terminator Pumps or Turbos before the Long Block sells. If I remove
any of those components, I will not be able to run the engine for any prospective buyer of the long block.
If I am going to have to sell the truck in parts, I would prefer to sell either the COMPLETE ENGINE or the LONG BLOCK
first. At least this way the buyer of the engine would be able to see and hear it run, and probably even drive the
truck, prior to disassembly. After that, whatever is left can be sold in whatever order.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have about the truck or components you might be
interested in. I hope that it’s obvious from this document and pictures that a lot of very hard work went into this
truck. I have a lot more invested into this truck than what I’m asking. I wish I had the time and energy to keep going
with racing and tuning and making this truck better. Ultimately, I would really just like to see it go to a 7.3L
“Powerstroke Guy” (or Girl) that will put it where it belongs…on the track!
