Steinke et al., to be submitted 3 We are proposing BELLA-i and k-BELLA initiatives as part of the strategic development of BELLA towards an internationally competitive laser science facility Area 1 Area 3 Area 2 k-BELLA New initiative γ-rays FEL Staging BELLA-i beamline New initiative Office of UNIVERSITY OF Science CALIFORNIA 4 4 Area 1 is dedicated to multi-beam experiments for staging and radiation source development § Current set-up: § Current set-up TREX laser (50 TW, 10 Hz): Area 2 Area 1 Area 3 § Used for first GeV electron beam from LPA § Staging and undulator beam lines § Deceleration exp. for DNN – active beam dump Control DNN gamma-ray § Godzilla (10 TW, 10 Hz): room source Staging § Used for Dream Beam – Nature2004 experiment § Medical applications § Upgrade underway: § Dual beam (100 TW + few J in 10 ps) TREX replacement (DNN funded) New laser § Gamma ray source demonstrator funded by § New 100 TW laser (Moore foundation funds) Foundation Phase space diagnosis and § Staging experiment control/FEL Beamline § Undulator beam line – phase space manipulation and diagnosis, FEL physics Office of UNIVERSITY OF Science CALIFORNIA 5 5 Area 2 houses BELLA, (still) highest rep rate PW-laser for high intensity LPA experiments • Petawatt laser operating at > 42 J in ~30 fs at 1 Hz ~ 55 micron spot ~30 fs 13.5m Intensity ~1.5x1019 Wcm-2 Acc. fields ~10-50GV/m Office of UNIVERSITY OF Science CALIFORNIA 6 6 We are proposing BELLA-i: a second beamline on BELLA for high intensity lasermatter interaction physics including ion acceleration – user driven science k-BELLA laser kW-class ultrafast γ-rays FEL Staging Plasma mirror technology for contrast clean-up + Office of UNIVERSITY OF Science CALIFORNIA 7 Intensity ~3-5x1021 Wcm-2 Acc. fields ~TV/m <1m 4-5 micron spot 7 Area 3 would house k-BELLA: a high average power (multikW), high peak power laser system for kHz rep rate LPA Area 2 Area 3 Area 1 § Discussed in P5 and ARD HEPAP subcommittee reports § (Informally) proposed to HEP as next major investment § kW-class ultrafast laser: 3 J at 1 kHz, suitable for driving 1 GeV linac at 1 kHz – opens many applications § Base technology for laser being developed under Stewardship grant (joint with LLNL and U. Michigan) as well as LDRD supported R&D § Laser on same level as BELLA § Two parallel caves for experiments on lower level Office of UNIVERSITY OF Science CALIFORNIA 8 8 k-BELLA -- Demonstrator for High Average Power LPAs – is being planned as a user facility with 2 beamlines § Preliminary estimate is ~$35 M with 40% contingency § Project to be preceded by 2 yr R&D phase to validate base technology § Schedule o CD0 in FY17 o CD1/2/3a in Q4 of FY18 o CD4 in Q3 of FY21 Office of UNIVERSITY OF § Operating cost for k-BELLA : estimated at $3.5 M/yr (note: BELLA ops $2.5M in FY15) Science 9 CALIFORNIA 9 We are poised to expand BELLA Facility towards Applications, increase in capability and laying the foundation for a user facility Science and Application User Facility Multi-GeV e-beams (now) Positrons Multi-stages Ultra-high intensity laser matter physics, ion acceleration High rep rate apps FEL powered LPA γ-ray source 2019 Staging (now) >2020 2018 2017 Laser system 2016 2015 TREX (now) BELLA-X 10 PW Laser tech R&D k-BELLA = kW class, 100 TW laser BELLA-i = BELLA + short focal length beamlines DNN Laser (>100 TW) Moore Foundation Laser (>100 TW) of UNIVERSITY OF BELLA longOffice focal length(now) Science 10 CALIFORNIA 10 Summary § BELLA facility is up and running and has set new records on laser performance and electron beam energy (up to 4.3 GeV) from an LPA § We are implementing novel concepts to reach 10 GeV, generation of ultra-cold beams and focusing on stability § Staging experiment is producing results § New initiatives on γ-ray source, FEL and medical applications have been launched by obtaining DNN funding, Moore Foundation funding and LDRD § We are proposing § BELLA-i as an important addition to the facility § k-BELLA as a new facility for high average power applications § Discussions started with DOE to make BELLA a user facility § Presented at DOE-FES Townhall, July 1, 2015 – white papers available § 2015 APS-DPP evening meeting and Workshop in January 2016 for community input Office of UNIVERSITY OF Science CALIFORNIA 11 11 BELLA Center staff (FY14-15) Scientific Staff: ! ! !
