About Our Guest Performers…
Bat McGrath — A 2013 Inductee
into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame,
Bat McGrath started on his musical
journey as a teenager in 1964 with a
band called The Showstoppers. The
band was discovered and signed
to a recording contract by the legendary John
Hammond of Columbia Records.
Of her four critically-acclaimed CDs, Tessa’s
personal favorite is “Beyond the Blue,” which
features Joe Locke. “His input was essential,”
she says. “He is such a giving person, and he
contributed so much to the vibe of the album —
not to mention his on-the-fly arrangements!”
XRIJF favorite, Tessa is thrilled to be returning to
Rochester to help honor Joe.
His next venture was as a duo with talented
guitarist Don Potter. McGrath & Potter released
one album on Epic records, but perhaps are
most noted for opening a club in Rochester,
NY, called Hylie Morris’ Alley. Soon after, Bat
began working with Chuck Mangione, Gerry
Niewood, Tony Levin, Steve Gadd, Pat Martino,
Kenny Burrell, and Stanley Watson. In 1970, Bat
wrote lyrics to several Mangione compositions
and the resulting “Friends and Love” concert LP,
released on Mercury Records, helped catapult
Mangione to international fame. After releasing
two critically acclaimed albums of his own on
Amherst Records, “From the Blue Eagle” and
“The Spy,” Bat relocated to Nashville and today
focuses on songwriting. He has written songs
recorded by Wynonna, Kenny Rogers, Chely
Wright, Earl Thomas Conley, Chalee Tennison,
Chad Austin, and Eclipse. He has released several
CDs on his own label and continues to enjoy his
greatest passion, which is live performance.
Peppy Castro — Peppy Castro,
considered to be one of the early
pioneers of the Psychedelic Garage
band rock era, has done it all. He is a
successful seasoned professional with
great variety in his music. His fame and
first hit record began at the age of 17 as one
of the founding fathers of the legendary rock
group, The Blues Magoos. They scored a Top
10 hit with the song, “We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet.”
His rock and roll status led him to a starring role
in the original Broadway production of “Hair.”
His songs have been recorded by the likes of
Diana Ross, KISS and Cher, among others. He
is also Emmy nominated and an award-winning
playwright and multi-instrumentalist, having
penned and or performed hundreds of wellknown jingles for Budweiser, Chevy, Bounty,
Nestlé’s Crunch, Kodak and more.
Ula Hedwig — Ula Hedwig is a
backup vocalist and performer who
has worked with some of the biggest
performers throughout the 1970s
and 1980s. Hedwig, originally from
Chicago, started her career there.
She performed in the musical “Hair” at age 19
there, and then came to New York City to do
the musical on Broadway. She performed in
“Godspell,” “Lullabye and Goodnight” and “That’s
Christmas,” as well as a few other shows in New
York. She was asked to be a backup singer for
Bette Midler in the mid-1970s, and worked on
most of her tours and TV specials through the
end of the 1990s. Hedwig has done backup for
numerous singers and performers, such as Paul
Tessa Souter — The daughter of
Trinidadian and English parents,
award-winning New York-based
vocalist, composer and lyricist, Tessa
Souter, imbues a mix of jazz and
stunning originals with the soul and
passion of Flamenco, Indian and Middle Eastern
music. Voted a Rising Star in the Downbeat
Critics Polls two years in a row, Souter’s “truly
beautiful voice” (Sirius Radio) and penchant
for exploring strikingly beautiful music mostly
untouched by other singers has set her apart as
“one of the finest and most fearless vocalists to
have emerged in recent years.” (Boston Globe)

Simon, Robert Plant, Roseanne Cash, Donald
Fagen, Olivia Newton-John and Tim Curry.
She’s performed on late night TV with acts like
Al Green, Randy Newman and Darlene Love.
Hedwig is now a vocal teacher, instructing high
school singers on how to work up their chops
for bigger stages.
The Cowsills— The Cowsills are
an American singing group from
Newport, Rhode Island. They
specialized in harmonies and the
ability to sing and play music at an
early age. The band was formed in the spring of
1965 by brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry Cowsill;
they shortly thereafter added their brother,
John. Originally Bill and Bob played guitar and
Barry was on drums. When John learned how to
play drums and joined the band, Barry went to
bass. After their initial success, the brothers were
joined by their siblings, Susan and Paul, and their
mother Barbara. Bob’s twin brother Richard was
the road manager. When the group expanded
to its full family membership by 1967, the six
siblings ranged in age from 8 to 19. Joined by
their mother, Barbara Cowsill (née Russell),
the group was the inspiration for the 1970s
television show “The Partridge Family.” They had
a number of pop hits including “The Rain, The
Park and Other Things,” and “Hair.”
Florence LaRue — Florence LaRue is
an American actress, humanitarian, and
Grammy Award winning singer. She is
best known as the original female lead
singer of The 5th Dimension. LaRue
was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, but
moved to Glenside, Pennsylvania when she
was young. She began her musical education
studying dance and violin. She later received
a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education
from California State University. In 1966, LaRue
was approached by LaMonte McLemore and
Marilyn McCoo to join their recently formed
group, The 5th Dimension, which became one
of the biggest pop acts of the 1960s and 1970s
with such hits as “Up, Up And Away,” “Stone Soul
Picnic,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” and “Aquarius/
Let The Sunshine In,” which was #1 for six weeks
on the Billboard charts. Today, she remains the

vocalist.

pivotal member of James Brown’s band, playing
on many hit recordings including “Say it Loud —
I’m Black and I’m Proud,” “Mother Popcorn”
and co-writing tunes such as “Hot Pants.” He
left Brown’s band in 1975 and spent several
years playing with George Clinton’s various
Parliament-Funkadelic projects, even recording
a couple of albums as the leader of a spin-off
group, The Horny Horns. Wesley became a
force in jazz in 1978 when he joined the Count
Basie Orchestra. He released his first jazz album
as a leader, “To Someone,” in 1988. In the early
1990s Wesley toured with his colleagues from

Douglas Lowry Award
Douglas Lowry, the Joan and Martin
Messinger Dean Emeritus of the Eastman
School of Music at the University of
Rochester, was a composer, conductor,
and academic leader, keenly attuned to
the shifting music world and its challenges
for music schools and students. In 2007,
he became the sixth head of the Eastman
School of Music, was named the first Joan
and Martin Messinger Dean in 2011, and
was reappointed in 2013.
Dean Lowry was known for building
strategic partnerships locally, nationally,
and internationally, and for recruiting
important faculty artists. He led the largest
architectural transformation in the Eastman
School’s history. Under his leadership, the
school’s historic performance venue was
renovated as Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, and the new Eastman East
Wing, with state-of-the-art performance, rehearsal, and teaching spaces,
was built.
The Rochester Music Hall of Fame met with Dean Lowry and his
successor, Jamal Rossi (who was Assistant Dean at the time) multiple times
in 2011, and between their wise counsel and support of the organization,
having our induction ceremony at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre became
a reality. We are eternally grateful for their advice and support.
To honor Dean Lowry and his contributions to the organization, we
established the Douglas Lowry Award. This year, we are pleased to
announce that the award will be given to each of two high school seniors
in the Rochester area who will be majoring in music at an accredited
college or university. The award was originally given to one student in
2015 and Rochester Music Hall of Fame now has the opportunity to offer
two awards due to the generosity of the Gibson Foundation, which is
underwriting the Douglas Lowry Award.

Dear Greater Rochester Community,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to welcome you to the
fifth annual Rochester Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
It’s hard to believe we are already in our fifth year. As in the past four years,
tonight’s ceremony promises to be another terrific show here in Kodak Hall
at Eastman Theatre. We are grateful to be able to hold our annual induction
ceremony in this stunningly beautiful and historic theatre.
It bears repeating each year that the Rochester Music Hall of Fame is most grateful to all of you
here tonight, our community, and those of you who give so much of yourselves in service and
volunteerism to help support this event to honor those whose music contributions have made us all
proud. Thank you.
Since day one, our presenting sponsor, Canandaigua National Bank, has been an enthusiastic
supporter and continues their long-term commitment to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame. The
Board of Directors of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame extends endless gratitude for the generous
commitment Canandaigua National Bank has made to our organization.
The wonderful support from all of our many sponsors and donors is appreciated by the Rochester
Music Hall of Fame. We are grateful to every one of them. I urge you to take your program home,
and support the businesses that have given so generously to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame.
We could not continue without their support.
Due to the hard work and passion of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame Board of Directors, our
organization continues to move forward toward fulfillment of our Mission Statement, which not
only pledges to honor those who merit induction, but also to inspire and encourage current and
future generations to explore and cultivate their own musicality. This commitment to the current
generation is evident in the second annual presentation of the Douglas Lowry Award that you will
see this evening where the award goes to senior high school students in the Rochester area who will
be majoring in music at an accredited college or university. The award is being underwritten by the
Gibson Foundation.
Once again, thank all of you here tonight for supporting our Fifth Annual Rochester Music Hall of
Fame Induction Ceremony.

Ron Carter (RMHF 2015), The Beastie Boys,

also a formidable composer and conceptualist as evidenced by such major
works as “Four Walls of Freedom” (featuring Bob Berg) and his recent “Love

Born in Palo Alto, California, Joe was raised in the Park and Culver area of
Rochester by his mom Mary, who worked as an executive secretary in the
education field, and his dad Fred, a professor of classics at the University
of Rochester. Joe benefited from the vibrant musical atmosphere offered in
Rochester in the ‘70s. While still a student at East High School, Joe studied
classical percussion with John Beck, Gordon Stout, Dave Mancini and Ted
Moore at the Eastman School of Music and became a name on the jazz
scene, playing with such stellar musicians as Vinnie Ruggiero, Steve Davis
and Joe Romano. A week after graduation, he was asked to join the Spider
Martin Quintet, a period in which he shared the stage with such luminaries
as Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria and Pepper Adams. Joe has been the
recipient of numerous awards, maintains a busy tour schedule and is on the
faculty of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Composer/Conductor/Educator
Howard Hanson
Howard Hanson — Composer/Conductor/
Educator
October 28, 1896–February 26, 1981
Birthplace: Wahoo, Nebraska
To say, “He created one of the most prestigious
music schools in America,” would be a bold
statement, but it would be accurate. As a
conductor, Hanson championed American
composers by recording their works for major
record companies while, as a composer, he
was commissioned by colleagues such as
conductor/composer Serge Koussevitzky
to create “Symphony Number 2.” Other
monumental successes include “Merry Mount” from the 1930s, one of
the first American operas, and “Symphony Number 4” from the 1940s, which
garnered a Pulitzer Prize. With origins stretching back to mid-nineteenth century
classical music to today’s cinematic pieces by John Williams, Hanson conjured up
everything from idyllic pastoral images to dramatic, majestic works, securing his
place in a renowned lineage. In fact, excerpts of Hanson’s “Symphony No. 2” were
used in the closing moments of the film Alien.
Hanson, of Swedish ancestry but hailing from Nebraska, served as director
of Eastman School of Music — by invitation of George Eastman himself — for
40 years from 1924 to 1964, taking office shortly before his 28th birthday.
Eastman School, under his leadership, developed into an institution in which
students could receive a well-rounded education while concentrating on their
professional studies. Also during his tenure, Hanson became one of the country’s
most influential music educators and championed American classical music,
premiering at the school 2,000 works by more than 500 American composers,
through the American Composers Concerts and an annual Festivals of American
Music, thus providing opportunities for commissioning and performing American
music. Additional innovations championed by Hanson at the Eastman included
a European/U.S. balance of teachers as well as the elevation of the Eastman
Rochester Orchestra (a combination of student and Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra musicians) to a world class orchestra that consistently performed in
numerous cities around the world.

represented the flower power battle cry of a
disaffected generation. Hair, billed as “The
American Tribal Love Rock Musical,” book
and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by
Galt MacDermot, broke nearly every theatrical tradition and became one of
the most successful musicals in Broadway history. Rado conceived the storyline
while observing the “make love, not war” hippie culture of the sixties. The
musical fostered five hit songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart: “Aquarius,” “Let
the Sunshine In,” “Hair,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Easy to Be Hard.” It
was nominated for a Tony award and won a Grammy for Best Score from an
Original Cast Show Album. In 1979 Hair, the movie, was released.
Rado, born James Alexander Radomski, lived with his parents and brother
Ted, on Seymour Road in Irondequoit, NY. His older half-sister Charlotte was a
Hollywood actress who influenced him greatly. Rado studied piano at Eastman
School of Music and briefly attended Monroe High before the family moved
to Washington, DC. He graduated from the University of Maryland majoring
in speech and drama. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he moved to New York
City where he wrote and recorded pop songs with his band, James Alexander
& The Argyles, and studied acting with Lee Strasberg. Rado originated the
role of Richard The Lionhearted in the 1966 Broadway production of The
Lion in Winter. He has written other musicals including Rainbow and Sun and
continues to develop new productions of Hair. In 2009, Rado was inducted
into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis defined the language of
funk. An acclaimed saxophonist and composer,
he was the architect of James Brown’s eradefining soul classics of the late 1960s,
introducing the dynamic arrangements and
rhythm that were the foundation of the
emerging genre of funk. Ellis is considered
the inventor of “funk jazz,” and together with Brown, is
credited with giving birth to funk, melding together his jazz influence with Brown’s
R&B roots. At age 24, he began working with James Brown and was his bandleader
from 1965 to 1969. He co-wrote and arranged several songs with the Godfather of
Soul, including “Cold Sweat,” “Licking Stick,” “Mother Popcorn,” and “Say It Loud —
I’m Black and I’m Proud,” and he also performed on many of Brown’s most important
recordings. Ellis has worked with, composed and arranged for many great artists
including George Benson, Aerosmith, and Dave Liebman, with whom he recorded
“The Chicken,” which became a favorite of Jaco Pastorius. Additionally, Ellis worked
with Van Morrison as an arranger and musical director for over 11 years. In the late
1980s, Pee Wee, along with Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker, formed the JB Horns and
recorded a number of jazz-funk albums.
Born in Florida, Ellis’s family moved to Rochester, NY when he was a teenager.
He attended Madison High School, and while still a student there, he performed
professionally with local jazz musicians (and past RMHF inductees) Chuck Mangione
and Ron Carter. Since 2012, Ellis has been touring with the Ginger Baker Jazz
Confusion, a quartet comprised of Ellis, drummer Ginger Baker, bassist Alec
Dankworth and percussionist Abass Dodoo. Today, Ellis lives in the UK where he leads
his band The Pee Wee Ellis Assembly, is writing his autobiography, and is developing a
project chronicling the history and impact of funk on popular music and culture.

Rustix delivered it with a punch.
The rock-solid rhythm and blues
band showcased the lead vocals
of frontmen Al Galich and Chuck
Brucato with Vince Strenk on keyboards,
Bob Soehner (f/b Ron Collins) on bass, David Colón on drums, and
Bob D’Andrea (f/b George Cocchini) on guitar. Their first vinyl, a 45 released
in 1968 on Cadet Records, featured a throbbing cover of Lennon and
McCartney’s “When I Get Home” and a Motown gem called “Leaving Here.”
Rare Earth Records, a Motown subsidiary, liked what they heard and signed the
band. Their debut LP, “Bedlam,” erupted in 1969 and landed on Billboard’s Top
200 chart. It included the unforgettable track, “Free Again,” and yielded the
popular single, “Can’t You Hear The Music Play.” The title track single off their
follow-up album, “Come On People,” was released in 1970 and rocked with the
beat of a freight train barreling down the rails amid wailing vocals and B3 blasts.
Two more singles followed in 1971 before the boys decided to part ways.
Galich and Brucato met in the U.S. Army where they sang in a trio. The two later
regrouped in Rochester, and The Rustix began to take shape. Chuck Leone
managed the band, while owners Danny Guilfoyle and Ferdinand J. Smith III
provided financial backing and promotional support. The band honed its craft
over the course of two summers performing at Lake George’s Airport Inn and
built a huge following throughout the northeast. In Rochester, they packed all
the local haunts – 414 Club, Westminster, the “V.I.” and Club 45. They opened
for Jimmy Hendrix, Vanilla Fudge, The Rascals and more and appeared on live
TV with Percy Sledge. The Rustix captured the heart and soul of Rochester.

Birthplace: Rochester, New York
Wendy O Williams, “queen of shock
rock,” burst on the scene as lead singer
of The Plasmatics in 1978 at New York’s
infamous CBGB. Their single, “Butcher
Baby,” became an instant cult favorite
introducing the band’s punk/metal
sound with Wendy’s powerful growling
vocals. Coiffed in a Mohawk and often
wearing little more than shaving cream on stage, she
sledgehammered TVs, chainsawed guitars and blew up cars, shattering cultural
and musical barriers in the process. She terrified authorities from Milwaukee
to London, getting banned, busted and beaten by police. In 1984, Williams
released her debut solo album, “WOW,” produced by KISS bassist Gene
Simmons, featuring cameo performances by other KISS members and backed
by Wes Beech and TC Tolliver of The Plasmatics. It earned her a Grammy
nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance of 1985 and spawned
the single, “It’s My Life,” which appeared on the soundtrack of the 1986 film,
Reform School Girls, starring Wendy. During her 10-year recording career, she
produced eight studio albums and multiple EPs.
Williams grew up with her sisters Barbara and Penny on State Road in Webster,
NY. Young Wendy tap danced and played clarinet in her junior high band.
In her teens, she became restless and rebellious and dropped out of school.
Williams hitchhiked across the country and traveled to Europe working at
various jobs along the way. In 1976, she met her life partner Rod Swenson in
New York where they created The Plasmatics. Away from the spotlight, Williams
was an environmentalist, an animal welfare advocate and a health-conscious
fitness buff who appeared on the cover of Vegetarian Times magazine. The sad
circumstances of her death echo the words of her song, “It’s my life and I’ll do
what I want.”

Superior Service and Customer Satisfaction Earn Van Bortel Ford
of East Rochester National Award by Ford Motor Company
East Rochester, NY, Feb. 2016 – Van Bortel Ford is among an elite group of Ford and Lincoln
dealerships to be recognized with the 2015 President’s Award by Ford Motor Company. The
prestigious award honors dealerships that have excelled in automotive retailing in 2015, by
providing exceptional customer service and satisfaction.
“Earning this award is a reflection of our entire staff’s commitment to delivering the best
customer experience possible,” says Van Bortel Ford owner Kitty Van Bortel. “I couldn’t be
more proud to receive this recognition, especially since it comes from the people we value
most – our customers. They’re the reason we were able to achieve this award.”
The President’s Award was established in 1998. Dealers become eligible through survey
responses from customers related to their sales and service satisfaction.
In addition to receiving the President’s Award for the 5th year in a row, Van Bortel Ford
customers voted the Upstate New York dealer #1 out of the 7 other President’s Award winners
in the entire Pittsburgh region. No other Rochester Area Ford dealer has ever earned this level
of recognition.
“In order to achieve the President’s Award, dealers must exceed customer expectations every
day in every department. The pursuit of excellence is not for the faint of heart – it requires
passion, tenacity and, of course, hard work. This prestigious award salutes those topperforming Ford and Lincoln dealerships that embrace these philosophies, achieving among the
highest levels of customer satisfaction – in both sales and service – in automotive retailing,”
said Russ Beebe, regional Ford representative.
