Useful information
help with travel costs
If you are referred to hospital or other NHS premises
for NHS specialist treatment or diagnostic tests by
your doctor, dentist or other health professional,
you may be able to claim a refund of reasonable
travel costs under the Healthcare Travel Costs
Scheme (HTCS). Assistance is also available for
children, other dependants, carers and escorts.
The HTCS also allows advance payments to help
you attend your healthcare appointments – for
example, if you do not have the money to get to
your hospital appointment and you are on a low
income or benefits.
Who can claim help with travel costs?
To qualify for help with travel costs under the HTCS
you must meet three conditions:
1. At the time of your appointment, you or your
partner (including civil partner) must receive one
of the qualifying benefits or allowances listed on
the website, or meet the eligibility criteria of the
NHS Low Income Scheme.
2. You must have a referral from a healthcare
professional for a specialist or to a hospital for
further NHS treatment or tests (often referred to
as “secondary care”).
3. Your appointment must be on a separate visit to
when the referral was made. This applies whether
your treatment is provided at a different location
(hospital or clinic) or on the same premises as
where your GP or other health professional issued
the referral.
TIP! If you have questions about help with health
costs, join the NHS ‘Help with health costs’ page
on Facebook. The NHS Business Services Authority
will respond to your queries Monday to Friday,
8.00am to 6.00pm.

Pathways
Pathways, Durham County Council’s day services
for adults with complex needs, is available to young
people with disabilities who have completed
compulsory education.
The specialist care hubs offer a warm, welcoming
atmosphere and provide excellent resources. Wherever
possible and appropriate, people are supported to do
everyday things in the community, just like everyone else.
We focus on opportunities for people, no matter how
complex the support required, by involving them and their
parents/carers and having a positive attitude to people.
Pathways are based in purpose-built facilities in Durham
and Peterlee, and re-designed spaces within Newton
Aycliffe, Spennymoor and Stanley Leisure Centres.
They have all recently been refurbished and had new
specialist equipment installed to deliver lively and
enriching therapeutic and multi-sensory activities.
Pathways offer access to therapies and activities including
rebound, hydrotherapy, posture care, Reiki, visual,
auditory and tactile stimulation and a Magic Carpet
sensory learning tool.
£
If you think Pathways is for you (or someone you care for) speak to your care co-ordinator to check if
your assessed needs meet the criteria for this service. If so, you can ask about arranging a visit to
your local Pathways.

from local groups. The scheme aims to give local young people
a real voice in decision making, enabling them to benefit from
positive activities. Applications can come from any not-for-profit
group but the idea behind the projects must come from young
people and projects must aim to benefit children and young people
in the BASH AAP area. You can make your application now and the
fund will be open until all of the available funding is allocated.

Change4life
The Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up with Disney
campaign is back and encouraging families to
‘Just Keep Moving’ as they kick off a summer of
activity, inspired by this year’s Disney Pixar film,
Finding Dory.
Families can once again take part in the 10
Minute Shake Ups as well as enjoying Finding
Dory inspired family swim sessions at local pools
across the UK, all approved by the Amateur
Swimming Association (ASA). The swim sessions
provide an interactive hour of storytelling fun
and activity for the whole family.
Too much inactive time is bad for a child’s
physical, social and mental wellbeing, yet just
21% of boys and 16% of girls currently meet the
daily national recommended level of activity of
60 minutes. Being active helps children to build
social skills, boost self-confidence, improve bone
and heart health and maintain a healthy weight.
Every 10 minute burst of exercise can make a
real difference in helping children reach the 60
minutes they need each day.
Make this a non-stop summer of fun activity and
search Change4Life online now for Disney and
Finding Dory inspired 10 Minute Shake Ups and
don’t forget to book your swim session at
www.disney.co.uk/justkeepmoving

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) parent support group
Good news from our group! - we have secured three patrons! The Rt Hon
Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP of Berwick-upon-Tweed has an autistic son so she fully
understands how our parents feel. Dr Joe Elliott, Principal of Collingwood College,
Durham University who has a good understanding of education as well as special needs
and Dawn Dunn, Managing Director of Tree Tops Children's Occupational Therapy in Newton Aycliffe
who started the group and is dedicated to sensory issues.
We have also been lucky enough to have received donations of £420 from Newton Aycliffe
councillors and £250 from Darlington Business Group. We're hoping to use some local sensory rooms,
ROF59 at Newton Aycliffe and start up a lending library in the next few weeks to help the parents and
children. Onward and upwards!

Introducing Ros Evans,
SEND Engagement Worker
I started work for Durham County Council
as SEND Engagement Worker in the
spring term. Since then I have enjoyed
meeting many parents, young people
and school SENCOs. I have also met
with people from other services,
including the voluntary sector.
My role is to promote working together to improve outcomes
for children and young people in County Durham. This involves
making sure that parents/carers and young people are able to
express their opinions to help us to improve services and
working with schools to encourage them to help parents,
carers, children and young people to have a say in education.
I am very interested to hear about parent/carer support groups
and would be happy to attend meetings to listen to what you
have to say. I can also bring information if
you would like to discuss a particular topic.

encourage families to join.
