HONOR ROLL OF DONORS July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014 FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of Community School of Naples: It is indeed a privilege for me to join Mr. John Allen, President of the Board of Trustees, in presenting to you the Honor Roll of Donors for the 2013-2014 school year. I am grateful to be a part of this special community, where so many philanthropic families, friends, alumni and gifted colleagues support our School and its mission. As I reflect upon the past year, I am pleased to share the news that our philanthropic endeavors remain strong. Particularly noteworthy is that the level of support has broadened; that is, more donors than ever before are supporting the Annual Fund for Excellence, the Angel Ball, Savor the Flavor, Seahawk Scramble, Hawk’s Nest Booster Club, the Angel Fund and other areas of need. Your continued support is evident in this year’s report. Gifts such as yours allow CSN to attract and retain the very best faculty, provide professional development opportunities, continue to enhance all areas of our curriculum and to offer tuition assistance to those children who, due to financial constraints, would otherwise be unable to attend CSN. Like other independent schools, much of Community School’s success may be measured in the list of universities to which our students matriculate. The list is indeed impressive. But more importantly, CSN students have built extraordinary resumes, which allow them to have choices. Effective counselors and administrators encourage and facilitate each student’s path to successful college admissions. While we are just beginning the 2014-2015 school year, please allow yourselves a moment to peruse the pages in this Honor Roll, where your name and so many others are listed. We all grow and progress through life at a similar pace, with only milestone circumstances effecting sudden surges in personal and experiential growth along the way. For some, it’s time spent traveling and studying in another country. For others, it is exposure and immersion in the college experience. Still others find personal growth after confronting and overcoming a trying life event – a near-death experience, losing a job or loved one, etc. For me, it came when I was named a National Merit Scholar in High School – or the Upper School, as we call it at Community School of Naples. At the request of former Headmaster James Landi, Community School had taken a chance on a mediocre student from Pine Ridge Middle School, taught him 3 years’ worth of mathematics, science, English, literature, and Spanish in 9 months, and tirelessly prepared him for the nationally administered Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. I expected to score and do just fine, but only just. A year later, I was notified of my qualification and awarded status as a National Merit Scholar, one of 15,000 other high school students to receive the award – out of 1.5 million who sat that year for the exam. Winning that award was no testament to my own scholastic ability; rather it was testament to the faculty, administration, and staff of one of the finest independent college preparatory day schools in the country: the Community School of Naples. Indeed, bringing out the best in students, both personally and academically, is central to the mission of CSN: “Preparing its students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners who strive to realize their full potential.” These words are not mere mission statement pretense; they drive and are behind every single action and decision of the school. Best of all, thanks to events like Angel Ball, those lucky few who compose the student body can now come from all walks of life – different socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, races, familial origins, etc. The numbers do not lie: CSN awarded $1.7 million in aid for the 2013-2014 academic year. Without events like Angel Ball, all those students – and the former student composing this article, mind you – would not have been afforded the opportunity to learn, question, think, and grow within the extraordinary educational walls of one of the finest college preparatory institutions in the country. On November 9, 2013, my fiancée and I were seated at a table supporting the 29th Annual Angel Ball at the Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort, where more than 350 parents, alumni, parents of alumni, friends of CSN, and over 40 CSN student volunteers and performers joined together for one of Naples’ premier gala events. Thanks to Angel Ball Chairmen Patty & Jay Campbell, Shannon Long & Karl Faerber, and Gina & Steve Ramirez, the Angel Ball “Changing of the Guard,” grossed over $750,000 in restricted gifts for the School’s Financial Aid Program. For me, a former recipient, the theme could not have rung more true: a student who was able to attend CSN only because of the financial aid his family had received years before was now able to help ensure that even greater opportunities await the future generations of CSN students. Attending the Angel Ball was not just another chance to spend a wonderful evening enjoying a beautiful location, a decadent plated dinner, and the dazzling sights and spectacle of glamour and glitz. It was my chance to provide more eager and deserving students their first opportunity to have their own experiences that will shape them for a lifetime. I know that it did for me. Go Seahawks! Their efforts have been uniquely responsible for much of the growth and development of the School as an outstanding educational institution. Moe and Dot Kent began their “careers” at CSN with the admittance of their daughter Maura in 1998 and son Max in 1999. Among their other volunteer efforts, the Kents chaired the Angel Ball in 2002 and 2003. Moe was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1999 and served on that Board through 2011. During Moe’s tenure on the board he served in various capacities on the board committees, becoming Vice President in 2002 and President in 2003. The final and most important achievement for Moe and Dot was the successful matriculation of their daughter Maura to Villanova University in 2012 and son Max to the University of Southern California in 2014. In honor of the Kent Family, the field house bears their name as well as affectionate nickname “The Moe” and the basketball court is known as The Kent Court. Page 20 Rosemary Bonner Scholarship Fund For those of us who can remember, Mrs. Rosemary Bonner was a frequent visitor to our campus for many years. Loving mother of Mrs. Mary Jo Dernbach and grandmother to four Community School graduates, Mrs. Bonner enjoyed athletic events, open houses and theatrical productions, but perhaps her favorite CSN event was our annual Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, for she cherished the special time with her grandchildren, visiting their classes and meeting their teachers, coaches and friends. When Mrs. Bonner passed away in October of 2013, her daughter, acting upon her wishes, presented a $10,000 gift to Head of School, Dr. David Watson during the Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day program, formally introducing the Rosemary Bonner Scholarship Fund, benefiting the financial aid program. Her pride evident in her constant smile, Mrs. Bonner knew how fortunate her grandchildren were to have received a CSN education, recognizing that their successes were directly related to Community School of Naples.
