Distinctively Better Plants
®
2013 Trends & Opportunities
There is an exciting new spirit at Monrovia this year. Production is up significantly, marketing launched a
Social Media Campaign for our customers, and the mantle of leadership has been assumed by John Keller,
VP of Operations and David Kirby, VP of Sales. As 20-plus year craftsmen, David and John share our drive to
improve the value of each Distinctively Better® plant. They created six new and much smaller sales regions.
Each is tasked with improving the quality, readiness and price of its plants. This improvement includes new
sales forecasting software. As a result we will have more plants priced and grown timely for each region.
We are also very excited about our new marketing focus where Pam Wasson, VP of Marketing, a craftsman
of 17 years, has created a Social Media Campaign of extraordinary scope and impact. Led by Destini Protich,
we are partnering with our customers to provide informative, timely and inspirational connections with
consumers via the internet. We know this is a fast developing area and if you have not partnered with us,
please contact Pam or Destini to get started.
Although we are closing our growing area in North Carolina next June, we have shifted those plants to
Georgia and overall our production is increasing significantly for the next three years, thanks to new
financing with our banks. Jerry Lee, a 38-year Craftsman, is our General Manager in Georgia, Greg Rusow,
a 30-year Craftsman, is our General Manager in California and Rick Wells, a 35-year Craftsman is
our General Manager in Oregon. In other words we have experienced leadership for growing more
Distinctively Better plants at all locations – and growing them we are.
As always, our focus is on the gardening consumers, and we are pleased that our brand remains the most
recognized consumer brand. This year for the first time, we have an exclusive partner within the home
improvement channel. Consumers will be able to find our brand at select Lowe’s stores at premium prices.
We know our brand is preferred because our plants have a Distinctively Better appearance in garden
centers and more importantly because our plants perform in a Distinctively Better manner once planted.
Our success is based on the support we receive from leading breeders around the world. Nicholas Staddon,
a 23-year Craftsman, has forged and sustained this remarkable outreach. We are pleased to partner with
such outstanding innovators as Dave Brazelton of Fall Creek Farms, Dale and Jeremy Deppe of Proven
Winners, Dan Hinkley founder of Heronswood and Anthony Tesselaar of ATI to name a few. We know
consumers are receiving improved varieties thanks to our partnerships with leading breeders. In 2013,
there are over 200 new introductions and nearly 1,000 more being evaluated.
These are exciting times at Monrovia as we find more ways to improve the value of what we offer you,
our customers, and consumers across North America. Please accept our wishes for a prosperous 2013
and rest assured the plants we have for you will be Distinctively Better.

More Gems from Around the World,
Thanks to Our Plant Explorer Dan Hinkley
Renowned plant explorer, Dan Hinkley, looks to Monrovia to grow and
nurture the fabulous new varieties he discovers. Dan travels the globe to
bring us new plants, and he is especially excited about these four recent
discoveries from Asia:

Hydrangea aspera species. This unique and stunning plant was discovered

emerges pale fawn and matures to a deep green over time. Its attractive
mid-summer flowers are followed by purple fruit. One of Dan’s
favorite species, Scheffleras make wonderful indoor container plants
in colder climates.
The new Windcliff Fragrant Pachysandra is sure to be the go-to plant for

Itoh Peony
®
The Best of Both Worlds!
Itoh Peonies are hybrids that have the best traits of both types of
Peonies: the colorful and exotic flowers of tree Peonies, with the
perennial growing cycle of herbaceous Peonies. Named for Toichi
Itoh, the first breeder to successfully create such a hybrid, they are
also known as intersectional hybrids. Itoh Peonies tend to resemble
tree varieties, with a domed, vigorous growth habit and large double
flowers with disease-resistant lacy, dark green foliage.
As many as 50 blooms will appear in a single season due to their
ability to produce primary and secondary buds. Strong stems make
them ideal as cut flowers. These beauties are prized for their intense
colors, greater vigor and excellent resistance to Peony blight (botrytis
paeoniae). Four Monrovia exclusives that are absolutely spectacular
are Keiko (adored) and Yumi (beauty), Takara (treasure) and Misaka
(beautiful blossom). The Japanese names reflect both the country of
origin and their stunning beauty.

evaluation has shown this plant to exhibit exceptional disease resistance combined with a compact,
self-mounding habit reaching just five to six feet tall, unlike R. umbellata ‘Minor’. Dark green,
glossy foliage and wavy margins add interest. Abundant white flowers appear in spring prior to
emerging new growth. Excellent for foundation plantings or hedges in a full sun location.

EXCLUSIVE RHODODENDRON (H-1) RAISE THE ROOF SERIES
Monrovia has long been known as a premiere grower of Rhododendrons with nearly 50 varieties. So to consider adding
more to our offerings they would need to be very special. And that’s what we found with the new Raise the Roof® Series.
Slam Dunk, Hoopla, Buzzer Beater and Huskymania (the basket-ball-related names celebrate women’s and men’s NCAA
championships) are dependable cold-hardy Rhododendrons with improved flower colors, improved growth habits, and
greater disease resistance and cold hardy buds. They were brought to us by Dr. Mark Brand, Associate Professor of Plant
Science at the University of Connecticut, who introduced the collection. This Rhododendron breeding program was
started in 1960 by Dr. Gustav Mehlquist who would cross two Rhododendrons with different desirable traits to get both
traits in one plant. Thousands of such combinations were grown, evaluated, refined and culled down to the best of the
best. Monrovia is delighted to offer these standouts in the Raise the Roof ® Series.
