RABBI’S MESSAGE
Dear Congregants,
My gratitude to all of you far exceeds my ability
to express,
The month of June this year is a quiet time on
the Jewish calendar, as we catch our breath
after the counting of the Omer to Shavuot, and
before the late summer "Three Weeks" of
mourning the destruction of the Temple and
exile of the Jewish People. This June will also
be the last month that I serve Congregation
Shaaray Tefila before moving to a new pulpit at
Sinai Temple in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, near
Philadelphia.
Rabbi Boaz Marmon
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
What a pleasure it is for me to congratulate
Rabbi Boaz Marmon on his rabbinic ordination
from The Academy for Jewish Religion. And
while there is sadness at knowing that he will be
leaving after years of dedicated service to our
Congregational family, we are all happy to know
that he has been engaged by a strong and
welcoming congregation outside Philadelphia.
From Shaaray Tefila, I will take memories of the
many wonderful people who have made up this
community during my time here, both those of
you who will be reading these words, and those
who are no longer among us. You may not
realize that I have been the student-rabbi of this
shul for longer than I have lived in any other one
place in my life. As such, Glens Falls and
Shaaray Tefila feel very much like home.
For those of us who will remain in beautiful
Upstate New York, the future holds both
challenges and opportunities. While we are
experiencing the effects of well-described
demographic trends and changing attitudes
toward Judaism and religion in general, we have
been proactive in addressing those trends with
our strategic plan, adapted just under a year
ago. I believe the pillars of a successful and
sustainable congregation are falling into place.
Philadelphia also is a kind of home, because
while I have never lived there, my father grew
up in Philadelphia and I have many relatives in
the area. I hope that I will find the community of
Temple Sinai to be as welcoming and thoughtful
as you have been here at Shaaray Tefila, and I
hope that many of you will keep in touch and
keep me apprised of goings-on here at this
home.
When I say successful, the obvious question is,
how do we measure success? By membership
roster? By revenue generation? Donations?
Attendance at services and functions? All of
these are important, no doubt. But ultimately, it
really comes down to these questions: Do
people feel that Shaaray Tefila is an important
part of their lives? Does it add meaning? Does
it address the kind of needs that can't or won't
be addressed by the secular institutions that
I know that my leaving coincides with changes
in the financial and leadership structure of the
shul. May God bless each of you individually
and as a community as you adjust to these
changes. May you remain vibrant, active, and
welcoming. May you fulfill the words recited in
1
dominate so much of our lives today? To do that,
we must be a loving and inclusive community
and we must eliminate barriers toward
engagement with our community, whether real
or perceived.
Congregation Shaaray Tefila and
Sisterhood Send Their Very Best
Birthday Wishes to the Following
Members and Friends:
Please join us as we move forward with this
project, as we will need each and every one of
you to be a part of this sacred community.

On
Thursday
May
14, 2015, six Congregation
members made their way
to New York City to
witness and kvell at the
ordination
of
Boaz
Benjamin Marmon who is
now known as Rabbi
Boaz Benjamin Marmon.
Bravo to Laura Roth for her wonderful
concert on April 26, 2015 which was nicely
moderated by her husband, Lew Roth, in
memory of Lew’s parents and Laura’s in-laws,
Gordon & Rose Roth. Approximately 100
people attended the performance and gave
Laura several standing ovations. Laura’s talent
and personality made the evening a great
success and we plan on having her back next
year for another fundraiser.
The six of us, Peter Weill, Dolly Morrissey, Cher
Hoffman, Judy and Al Korot and myself cried
and cheered and felt a large measure of pride in
the newly ordinated Rabbi Marmon.
The
service was lovely and sacred and so
appropriate for the occasion. There was a
strong feeling of community from the staff and
participants in the service. These newly
ordained Rabbis and cantors were all our
children and we were all so proud of their
accomplishments.
Laura portrayed Patsy Cline, Cher,
Barbara Streisand, and Tina Turner in addition
to Lilly, one of a series of comic characters
Laura has developed, designing their costumes
and routines.
There were four rabbinical candidates and one
cantorial candidate.
Each candidate was
introduced and the highlights of his
accomplishments were read.
We thank both Laura and Lew for their
generosity in providing us with this concert.
A very impressive group of people with major
contributions to the Jewish community. Then
they received Schimca and said a few words.
The service was followed was a lovely
reception. The emotions in the room were high
and celebratory, hugging and kissing and hand
shaking were all around.
Also, a special thanks goes out to Bonnie
Yanklowitz for hosting the refreshments
afterwards.
If you missed it, you missed something
special. Don’t miss it next year. Laura has over
75 characters she portrays so we have much to
look forward to.
The Korot’s stayed in the City and the rest of us
took the train back to Albany. We talked about
the service and how much we enjoyed and how
glad that we had gone.
Volunteer Jewish Chaplaincy Group
We are hoping to find a few good men
and women who would like to
volunteer to visit the sick, elderly and
disabled of our community. We hope
to do this in conjunction with Temple
Beth El. If we can get a group
together, Rabbi Beverly Magidson, Chaplain of
the Jewish Federation, has agreed to do a
training session for us on volunteer Jewish
chaplaincy. Please contact the office (792-4945)
or email Mark Hoffman [email protected] if
you are interested in participating

One of the most important cartoonists of the
twentieth century, Will Eisner grew up in the
Bronx, son of poor Jewish immigrants. Writer
and artist, he combined his passions to create
“sequential art,” now referred to as “graphic
novel” and recognized as a legitimate art form.
His work was instrumental in establishing the
comics’ medium in America.

* Limited space for horseback riding is available, so
sign up early when you arrive. Children must be at
least eight years old. Riding is an additional cost and
a parent must complete a consent form. You will
need long pants and closed shoes to ride. (There
may also be pony rides available for younger
children.)
A sick person generally needs the assistance of
caregivers, doctors, nurses and family to get
well again. They are also in need of spiritual
support from the community. We can fulfill this
obligation with prayer. We urge that as many
people as possible join daily and pray for a
Refuah Shleimah, a complete recovery for all
that are sick and ailing.
** There is no cost for Temple Beth El and
Congregation Shaaray Tefila families with children,
thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Lebowitz
family. There is a $20 per person charge for anyone
else in attendance.
Imagine all of the people who are sick that could
receive God’s healing blessings through your
prayer. There is no limit to how often one can
pray for himself or for someone else. The
purpose of healing prayer is to stand before God
who is the ultimate healer, a fact that all healers
acknowledge.

MI SHEBERACH
Every person must be responsible for his fellow
man. That burden extends to every facet of life
including illness. The Torah obligates us to
collectively care for the needy, the orphan, the
stranger, the aged and the sick; in other words
for all those who cannot provide for themselves.
