The
Cape Cod Canal
hen Captain Miles Standish and the
residents of the Plymouth Colony
were scouting the Cape Cod Region in the
early 1600s, they noted a sea level valley
that acted as a watershed for the Manomet
(Monument) and Scusset Rivers. They
considered that if a passage could be dug
across this narrow neck of land, a canal
could be created that would save ships the
necessity of having to travel around the tip
of Cape Cod. Later, during the American
Revolution, the idea of a canal at Cape Cod
resurfaced as a way to circumvent British
harbor blockades.
Despite this very early realization of
the valley’s potential, engineering methods
were for hundreds of years not equal to the
task. The first serious attempt to open a
canal was not undertaken until the late
1800s. The first functional Cape Cod Canal

was completed in 1914 by the Boston, Cape
Cod and New York Canal Company. The
original, privately owned toll Canal was
dangerously narrow—its width was only
about 100 feet—and it was only about 20
feet deep. The Canal’s size limitations,
combined with its swift currents and tricky,
winding route, made negotiating the Canal
difficult, and several accidents caused navigators to question the channel’s safety. As
a result, the revenues from tolls seriously
disappointed the Canal’s investors.
While the first Canal may not have
been financially profitable, it was soon
proven to have definite strategic advantages. During World War I, German Uboats attacked ships sailing along the
Atlantic coast of Cape Cod, and the Canal
became a valuable, protected shipping lane.

assumed control of the Canal during the
war. When the war ended, the Boston, Cape
Cod and New York Canal Company reluctantly reassumed control until 1928, when
the government finally agreed to purchase
the Canal for $11.5 million. It was opened
as a toll-free public waterway under the
direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
In 1933, a massive five-year project to
widen and straighten the Canal began. The
approach was widened to 540 feet, the
overall width was increased to nearly 500
feet and the depth to 32 feet. The Canal’s
expansion necessitated the movement of 30
million cubic yards of earth and the
replacement of the cantilever highway
bridges and the railway bridge that then
spanned the Canal. The undertaking
employed a total of 1,400 men during the
Great Depression.
Upon completion, the Cape Cod Canal
became—and remains—the widest sealevel canal (without locks) in the world.
Ships can save 162 miles by using the Canal
instead of having to travel around the tip of
Cape Cod. Passage through the Canal is
also safer than having to deal with the dangerous shoals and unpredictable currents
surrounding the Outer Cape. Today, nearly
16,000 vessels of all types use the Canal
each year, and more than 35 million vehicles pass over the Bourne and Sagamore
highway bridges that link Cape Cod to the
mainland.
In 1985, the Cape Cod Canal was recognized as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The Bourne Bridge,
built at the time of the Canal’s expansion,
received the Class A “Award of Merit” in
1935 as “The Most Beautiful Bridge Built in
1934.”
The service roads that were used during the construction of the Canal are now
extensively used for recreational activities,
including walking, bicycling and sport fishing. The Army Corps of Engineers promotes and manages the recreational activities along the Canal. The Corps also
manages the conservation efforts dedicated
to preserving the rare plant and animal
species that take advantage of the area’s
moderate marine climate.
The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center,
located at 60 Ed Moffitt Drive in Sandwich,

brochures, interactive exhibits, films and
programs for all ages about the Canal’s rich

rare, perfect marriage of form and
function, the majestic vertical lift railroad bridge has been a landmark of the
Cape Cod Canal and the village of Buzzards
Bay for 75 years. Constructed between 1933
and 1935 by the Phoenix Bridge Company,
the bridge was designed to replace a smaller railroad bridge built in 1912, which
could not accommodate the larger vessels
that would be using the canal.

With a horizontal span of 544 feet, the
Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge had the
longest lift span in the world at the time of
its construction. The span is normally kept
in its raised position of 135 feet above
mean high water to allow ship traffic to
pass through unimpeded. Controls for the
bridge are located in the north tower, and
each tower has 40 cables to lift a box filled
with about 1,100 tons of concrete. Since the

center span weighs about 2,200 tons, these
boxes create a near perfect counterbalance;
therefore, only four 150-horsepower
motors and an auxiliary motor are needed
to raise or lower the central span in just two
and a half minutes.
The Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge is
still considered to be the most aesthetic single-span vertical lift bridge in the world. Its
distinctive features include open steel con-
struction with Gothic scrolling and decorative tower cones topped with stainless steel
globes. Aerial beacons are located on the
spires and on the highest point of the central span.
A major renovation of the bridge was
completed in 2003, restoring it to its original grandeur so that it may provide us with
many more years of pleasure and dependable service.

the Pilgrims traded goods with the Dutch
colonies from the New York area. And it was
here that the first currency in America was
developed: it was called wampum and was
made from purple parts of quahog shells. A
replica of the Aptucxet Trading Post is situated off Shore Road in Bourne Village.
ourne is the first town visitors encounter
when entering Barnstable County. It has
the distinction of occupying most of the land
through which the Cape Cod Canal flows.
Whether traveling to the Cape on Route 3 or
Route 495, visitors must pass through at least
one of Bourne’s many villages.
English colonists lived in this area as early
as 1627. The first free enterprise in America
was located near the west end of the land cut
of the present Cape Cod Canal. The Aptucxet Trading Post was situated on a piece of
land between a creek and two rivers; the
Manomet River connected with Massachusetts Bay, and the Monument River connected to a body of water that eventually reached
the entrance of New York Harbor and the
Hudson River. It was at this trading post that

In the 1880s, Bourne became an ideal location for manufacturing. Power was provided by
windmills and water wheels, and raw manufacturing materials were available in the region.
Finished products could be shipped out on
trains or ships. One noteworthy company was
the Keith Car Works of Sagamore, which built
freight cars. It began work in 1826 and
remained in operation for over 100 years. Many
houses built by the company can still be seen on
both sides of the east end of the Canal.
As the large industrial centers in Massachusetts prospered, the state’s wealthy residents
wanted to escape the cities and enjoy the country. They scouted the Cape Cod Canal Region
and decided it was perfect for their needs. The
cool ocean breezes, sandy beaches and wooded
lands made it an ideal summer retreat for the
whole family. Over the next few years, many
elaborate and expensive summer homes were
built in the area. President Grover Cleveland,
Shakespearean actor Joseph Jefferson and
Boston Globe founder Charles H. Taylor were a
few of the region’s famous summer residents.
The features that attracted people here over
100 years ago are still present today, including
moderate year-round temperatures, sandy
beaches with water temperatures conducive to
water sports, abundant fishing and shellfishing
locations, and wooded areas in which to observe
and enjoy nature. It is an excellent region to use

the region, taking advantage of the national
resources of land, waterpower and wood fuel.
ncorporated in 1639, Sandwich is the oldest
of the Cape towns. During the town’s first
100 years, the English settlers farmed the land
and ran small coastal fishing enterprises.
Sandwich was also an important stagecoach stop on the Old King’s Highway (now
Route 6A) from Boston to Provincetown; it
quickly became a center for travel and
tourism. Taverns and inns cropped up along
the main street. Wealthy Boston travelers on
business and vacation stayed at these establishments en route to other parts of Cape Cod.
The Fessenden Tavern (later called the Central
House) was one of the most famous stops; it
was noted for being the Patriot Headquarters
before the Revolutionary War and was later
renamed for its most popular guest, Daniel
Webster. Across town, Newcomb’s Tavern,
served as the Tory headquarters.

The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was
founded in 1825 and grew steadily over a 63year period to employ 500 workers who created various types of glassware. The company is
best known for its pressed-glass items, which
could be produced quickly, inexpensively and
in large quantities for sale to middle-class
shoppers desiring fine objects for their homes.
The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company
closed in 1888 after the center of pressed-glass
production shifted from New England to the
Midwest, where the cost of glassmaking was
less expensive. Today, glass made at the
Sandwich factory is a highly prized antique collectible. The Sandwich Glass Museum, located
across from the Grist Mill in the center of
Sandwich village, displays thousands of glass
objects made at the factory during the 19th
century.
Museums in Sandwich, such as Hoxie
House, Heritage Museums and Gardens, and
Thornton Burgess, are windows to our past
and give us a sense of what life was like in the
early days of America.

Cranberry Harvest
areham was discovered in 1603 by
Bartholomew Gosnold, an Englishman
who sailed across the North Atlantic Ocean to
explore the East Coast of North America.
Gosnold named Cape Cod, Martha’s
Vineyard, the Elizabeth Islands, Cuttyhunk
and Agawam—better known as Wareham—
as well as other local towns.
In 1666, local tribes sold Agawam to the
Plymouth Colony for grazing lands. The
tribes did not realize the full extent of what
they had signed; the sale gave the Pilgrims
exclusive rights to Agawam.
Early on, the residents recognized the
importance of herring. Even in Colonial
times, strict rules were set for how many herring could be caught. Because herring was a
necessity of life, catching and preserving the

fish became a family affair. Oysters were
another greatly sought-after food found in
the local waters.
Bog ore was discovered while digging in
the fields. This ore proved useful for making
nails, farm implements and ironware. Many
homesteads set up furnaces and forges so that
they could process the ore. During the processing, it was discovered that if charcoal was
burned instead of wood, the fire would be
hotter and the ore would then harden and
turn to steel. This steel could be used to make
stronger nails. In 1819, the first cut-nail factory in the region was started; many other nail
companies soon followed. Only one nail
company is still in existence: The Tremont
Nail Company holds the distinction of owning one of the oldest operating industrial

buildings in America. Realizing its historical
significance, the town has purchased the
property in order to ensure its preservation.
Overlooking the calm waters of Buzzards
Bay is the picturesque seaside village of
Onset. Once a favored destination for Duke
Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and Cab Calloway,
the village continues its fondness for the
Blues with it’s annual Onset Blues Festival
held each August. Today, Onset is a burgeoning vacation destination again, with the
resurgence of newly renovated Victorian
mansions and cottages that line the sandy
crescent-shaped beach.
Wareham offers an exceptional location
within easy distance to the Boston and
Providence metropolitan areas. All the tourist
amenities of the Cape Cod area are available
in Wareham. The town has over 54 miles of
coastline enhanced by beaches, estuaries,
rivers and communities.

Gatemen are two franchises of the ten
team Cape Cod Baseball League, considered to be the premier summer
NCAA–sanctioned wooden-bat collegiate
league in the country.
These are entirely all-volunteer organizations – which work year round to provide the community and our visitors a
summer full of free entertainment-watching arguably the best college baseball players in the country! The league relies totally on donations and sponsorships. Players
are housed with host families in each com-

munity and are expected to help with the
upkeep of the playing fields, teach youth
clinics and even sell 50/50 raffle tickets
during the games.
