Coaching Staff
After leading the Golden Eagles to a much-improved
season in 2007-08, Tuonisia Turner-Lewis returns for her second
year as the head coach of the Cal State L.A. women’s basketball
program. The Golden Eagles were one of the most improved teams
in the California Collegiate Athletic Association last season and Cal
State L.A. was among the national leaders (tied for 26th) in largest
improvement season-to-season (6.5 games).
Turner-Lewis led the Golden Eagles to a 9-17 overall
record, which was a large jump forward after the program’s 3-24
record in 2006-07. Cal State L.A. also improved its conference
record from 1-21 to 6-14. The Golden Eagles snapped a 17-game
conference losing streak dating back to January of 2007 and also
posted their first home win since November of 2006.
The Golden Eagles remained in the chase for a spot in the
CCAA Championship Tournament, but dropped a pair of conference
Tuonisia Turner-Lewis road games to end the season.
Turner-Lewis brought more than 12 years of NCAA Division
I coaching experience with her to Cal State L.A.
She came to Cal State L.A. after two years as a head
coach and faculty member at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano. Turner-Lewis led the
program to an overall record of 36-17 in her two seasons there.
She began her coaching career at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was an
assistant coach from 1993-96. She then moved on to Long Beach State, where she was an assistant
coach and later an associate head coach. Turner-Lewis was at Long Beach State from 1996-2004 and during that time she was
responsible for coordinating national and international recruiting efforts, scouting opponents, developing practice plans, training
programs and monitoring the academic progress of her student-athletes. With players she helped to recruit to Long Beach State, the
program produced seven professional basketball players, one WNBA player, two conference Player of the Year recipients, eight firstteam All-Conference selections, eight second-team All-Conference picks, four All-Freshman Team selections, two Defensive Player of
the Year award winners and two Sixth Man of the Year recipients.
After leaving Long Beach State, Turner-Lewis was an assistant coach at Winthrop University in South Carolina from 2004-05,
where she was in charge of coordinating recruiting student-athletes, scouting opponents and monitoring team academic progress. She
then spent two seasons at JSerra Catholic High School before becoming Cal State L.A.’s new head coach.
Turner-Lewis received her degree in communications from the University of Louisville, where she played for four years. She is
one of only four players in Louisville history to score more than 1,000 points and have more than 500 assists in a career. She is fourth
all-time on the Louisville career assist list with 543 and she is fifth in steals. She finished her career with 1,048 points.
Turner-Lewis also has some broadcasting experience after serving as a color commentator for women’s basketball broadcasts
for Fox 41 in Louisville.
Head Coach
A coach who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience after being a part of two of the
top women’s basketball programs in the country, Mya Ferguson returns for her second year as an
assistant coach with the Cal State L.A. women’s basketball team.
In Ferguson’s first year with the program, Cal State L.A. was one of the most improved
teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and was among the national leaders (tied for
26th) in largest improvement season-to-season (6.5 games). Cal State L.A. improved its overall
record from 3-24 in 2006-07 to 9-17 last season and bumped its conference win total up by five.
During the season, Coach Ferguson’s duties include recruiting, film exchange,
coordinating travel and supervising student-athletes’ academic progress. She is also responsible
for post player development.
Ferguson came to Cal State L.A. from Cathedral International Productions, where she
was a production assistant.
Previously, she was the director of basketball operations at Rutgers University, where she
was responsible for travel, monitoring the women’s basketball program expenses, coordinating
community service events for the team and supervising renovations in their state-of-art lockerroom.
She was also an intern in basketball operations at the University of Tennessee from
2000-2002, where she assisted with recruiting efforts, day-to-day office operations and summer
camps.
Ferguson also served as a camp coach and coordinated travel for the Pat Summitt Basketball Camps and was the camp
director of the Sanya Tyler Basketball Camp in Washington, D.C.
Ferguson graduated magna cum laude from Howard University with a degree in sports administration. She completed her
Master’s degree in exercise science with a sports management concentration at the University of Tennessee.

The Eagles Nest
The Eagles Nest

State L.A. basketball
and volleyball teams.
The arena seats 5,000
fans, with many of the

the action. In fact, the
first row of seats is just
inches away from the
edges of the basketball
playing floor.
The retro-style of the
Eagles Nest includes
the ability for the arena to quickly become one of the loudest arenas in the country.
The Eagles Nest hosted some of the finest athletes in the world as the judo competition was
held at CSULA during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Eagles Nest was featured
prominently in the 2005 movie Coach Carter, starring Samuel L. Jackson.
