SEASON OPENERS
• With last season’s thrilling 89-86 win at Tulsa, Appalachian State has won five of its last seven season
openers dating back to 2004-05, including the last
two.
• The Mountaineers downed UNC Wilmington to
open the 2009-10 campaign and halt a two-game
skid in season opener losses. ASU fell at Charlotte in
2007-08 and at UNC Wilmington the following year.
• Prior to that stretch, ASU won three-straight, including victories over Erskine, Arkansas-Little Rock
and North Greenville from 2004-06.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
• Lees-McRae head coach Scott Polsgrove returns
11 players from last season’s 6-20 squad. Junior
guard Daniel Sepokas is the only returning starter,
however, after scoring 13.2 points per game last
season.
• The Bobcats dropped an exhibition at UNC Asheville earlier this week, 98-67. Sepokas led LMC with
17 points in the contest.
• LMC shot 40.7 percent from the field against
UNCA, but lost the rebound battle, 51-35, and
turned the ball over 23 times.
MOUNTAINEER GAME NOTES
APPALACHIAN
BY THE NUMBERS ...
0 • Appalachian does not face any team
for the first time in 2011-12. ASU has
faced all of its scheduled opponents at
least one time before this season.
8 • Rodney Milum sank 8-of-12 three-
pointers in his unofficial ASU debut
to lead the Mountaineers past LenoirRhyne, 102-64, on Nov. 11. His 28 points
were the most in an exhibition since
Donald Sims scored 33 against Mars Hill
in 2009.
8.1 • Isaac Butts hauled in 8.1
rebounds per game in 2009-10. His average ranked second in the league on the
season, and only one player notched a
higher total in 2010-11, while Butts was
sidelined (Wofford senior Tim Johnson 8.5 rebounds per game).
16 • Butts enters his senior campaign
just 16 rebounds shy of cracking ASU’s
career top-10 list. Tim Powers (1988-92)
currently holds the place with 637 career
boards.
17 • ASU’s 17-of-28 night from
downtown in the exhibition would have
matched the program record for longballs made had it been a regular-season
contest.
23 • ASU posted a 9-3 mark at home
last season and set a Holmes Center Record with 14 wins the year before. ASU’s
23 home wins in the last two seasons are
the third-most in the SoCon over that
period. Only Western Carolina (25) and
College of Charleston (24) have more.
32 • Average age of ASU’s coaching
staff (Capel - 31, Gainey - 34, Kummer 37, Sampson - 26). Colgate is believed to
have the nation’s youngest staff at 29.8
years old. Head coach Matt Langel is the
eldest of that group at 33 years old.
40 • Appalachian won 40 games over
the last two seasons.
68.2 • In 11 seasons in the Holmes
Center, Appalachian has posted a 101-47
record, good for a 68.2 winning percentage.

BUTTS’ RETURN LOOMS LARGE
• After sitting out the 2010-11 season while recovering from an offseason knee injury, senior
Isaac Butts returns to the court for the first time
since averaging 8.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and
1.0 blocks per game as a junior.
• The big man boasts 16 career double doubles
and ranks in the program’s career top-10 in
both field-goal percentage and blocks. He
is 16 boards shy of cracking ASU’s top-10 in
rebounds as well.
• Butts’ return will be felt throughout the
Mountaineer lineup, as it both bolsters the
team’s depth in the post and also allows classmate Andre Williamson to return to his more
natural power forward position. Williamson
led the Apps in rebounds, blocks and shooting
percentage last season in Butts’ absence.
NEW FACES ON THE COURT ...
• Appalachian welcomes six new faces onto
the court in 2011-12, including junior transfers
Rodney Milum and Jamaal Trice, redshirt
sophomores Brian Okam and G.J. Vilarino,
and freshmen Tab Hamilton and Mike Neal.
• Additionally, sophomore Jay Canty joins the
Black and Gold for 2011-12 but will redshirt the
season after transferring from Xavier.
... AND ON THE BENCH
• Assistant coach Kellen Sampson joins the
Mountaineer bench this season following one
season at Stephen F. Austin.
• Despite his young age (26), Sampson has
amassed quite the coaching resume following
stints at Indiana and Oklahoma.
• Sampson joins Justin Gainey and Bobby Kummer in their second seasons on Jason Capel’s
staff.
WILLIAMSON TOURS CHINA ON
SUMMER MISSION
• Following a breakout junior season in the
post, Andre Williamson made further strides as
a player and as a person on a three-week trip to
China with Athletes In Action.
• The Dayton, Ohio native played with other
NCAA Division I student-athletes in eight exhibition contests against the Under-22 national
team and several upper-level Chinese teams.
• In addition to the competitions, Williamson
and the other basketball players completed
volunteer and mission work across East Asia.
PRESEASON
PROGNOSTICATIONS
• The Southern Conference coaches voted senior Omar Carter the league’s Preseason Player
of the Year. The early honor is well-deserved
as the wing is the SoCon’s top returning scorer
from last season in addition to 5.8 rebounds
per game, 40 assists and 26 steals in his first
season with the Apps.
• Both the league’s coaches and media picked
ASU to finish second in the North Division,
behind defending champion Chattanooga.

APPS SHOW OFF RANGE IN
EXHIBITION
• Despite Isaac Butts’ absence and with Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year
Omar Carter playing just two minutes off the
bench while resting an injury in last Thursday
night’s exhibition against Lenoir-Rhyne, the
Mountaineer offense still fired on all cylinders
and gave fans a glimpse of the 2011-12 team’s
potential.
• Junior transfer Rodney Milum sank 8-of-12
three-pointers to help the Apps to a 17-of-28
night from downtown. In the regular season,
Milum’s outburst in his unofficial debut would
have ranked fourth on ASU’s single-game list.
ASU’s 17 treys matched the most in program
history, tying the 2005-06 squad’s output
against The Citadel. ASU’s season high from
downtown in 2010-11 was 11.
• Milum’s 28 points were the most in an exhibition since Donald Sims scored 33 against Mars
Hill in 2009. Sims was 5-of-6 from beyond the
arc in that contest.
• ASU’s 63 first-half points matched or exceeded
the team’s total output from five complete
games in 2010-11.
• Andre Williamson sank 7-of-8 shots in the
contest to score 17 points to accompany eight
rebounds. The senior added two steals and a
block in 26 minutes.
• Jamaal Trice added 11 points in his unofficial
debut, while Nathan Healy notched 10 points
with three treys in four attempts.
MOUNTAINEERS RETURN TO
TWCA
• After a 10-year hiatus in the rivalry, Appalachian will host East Carolina in Charlotte’s Time
Warner Cable Arena on Nov. 22.
• The game is the first in a two-season homeand-home series, with the Mountaineers returning to Greenville, N.C. in November 2012.
• The last meeting between the in-state foes
was 2001-02, when Appalachian earned a 93-87
home-opening win, though the rivalry dates
back to the 1933-34 season.
• ASU last played at the home of the Charlotte
Bobcats in the 2010 Southern Conference
Championship semifinals and final.
FOUR STARTERS RETURN
• ASU lost its career leading scorer in Donald
Sims from last season, but returns four starters
from the 2010-11 squad as well as Isaac Butts,
who started 35 games as a junior in 2009-10
and all 31 games in 2008-09.
• Omar Carter, Petey Hausley, Andre Williamson
and Mitch Woods all started at least 17 games
last season.
• The last time ASU returned four starters was
for the 2009-10 season, when the Mountaineers
rattled off 24 wins, a North Division Championship and postseason berth.

MEN’S BASKETBALL EXCELS IN
THE CLASSROOM
• Since the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR)
was introduced, Appalachian has been one of the
most successful programs in the nation in exceeding the NCAA’s academic benchmark.
• In each year the NCAA has released APR data, the
Mountaineers have finished well above the NCAA
benchmark score of 925.
• For 2005-06, ASU was one of only 13 public institutions to garner the award.
• The 2008-09 Apps posted the highest score in
four years with a 980, placing the team in the top
30 percent of programs nationally.
• Below is a look at how ASU has fared in the APR

Nov. 17, 2009 • Boone, N.C.

Isaac Butts scored 10 first-half points and
six of the team’s first eight after the intermission as he finished with a career-best
22 in Appalachian State University men’s
basketball’s 77-44 win against Lees-McRae.
Butts led the squad on the boards with
nine rebounds as ASU held a 44-30 edge
on the glass.
The Mountaineers (2-1) shot a stout 54.4
percent from the field while holding LMC
to only 30.5 percent shooting.
Appalachian opened a 17-point first-half
lead and never looked back in the rout. The
squad then showed its depth in the second
half as 14 players made appearances and
12 different Mountaineers scored.
Donald Sims scored seven points in the
contest to go along with three assists and
a steal, but did not sink a three-pointer in
the game.

FORMER STANDOUT DRAFTED
BY NBDL’S RENO BIGHORNS
• Following the completion of a stellar four-year
career at Appalachian, guard Donald Sims was
drafted in the NBDL’s fourth round by the Reno
Bighorns earlier this month.
• The Gaffney, S.C. native opens the campaign
on Nov. 25.
• Reno is the minor league affiliate of the Atlanta
Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento
Kings for this season.
NEW-LOOK ON THE COURT
• ASU’s home court received a facelift over the
offseason with a new paint job.
• Fans will notice the incorporation of the ‘Block
A’ logo replacing the former Yosef head.
• In accordance with NCAA rules changes from
last year, a semi-circle has been added underneath the basket to indicate where defenders
must be set to draw a charge.
• Finally, the old three-point line has been removed as NCAA women’s basketball has moved
out to the same arc as the men.
GLANCING AHEAD
• The Mountaineers take a three-game break
away from the Holmes Center, beginning with a
road trip to Tennessee.
• ASU faces former SoCon rival ETSU in the first
game of a home-and-home series on Tuesday in
Johnson City.
• The Apps then return the 2010 BracketBuster
game at Tennessee Tech on Nov. 19.
• The swing away from the High Country wraps
up on Nov. 22 against East Carolina at Charlotte’s Time Warner Cable Arena.
