2 Canadian National and the SD40-2W “Wide Nose”
The Canadian National Railway Company (reporting mark CN) is a Canadian Class I
railway headquartered in Montreal, Quebec.
CN is the largest railway in Canada, in terms of both revenue and the physical size of
its rail network and is currently Canada's only transcontinental railway company,
spanning Canada from the Atlantic coast in Nova Scotia to the Pacific coast in British
Columbia.
Following CN's purchase of Illinois Central (IC) and a number of smaller US railways
it also has extensive milage in the central United States along the Mississippi River
valley from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Today CN owns approximately
20,400 route miles of track in 8 provinces (the only two not served by CN are
Newfoundland & Labrador and Prince Edward Island), as well as a 70 mile stretch of
track into the Northwest Territories to Hay River the southern shore of the Great
Slave Lake; it is the northernmost rail line anywhere within the North American Rail
Network, as far north as Anchorage, Alaska (although the Alaska Railroad goes
further north than this, it is isolated from the rest of the North American network.
The railway was referred to as the Canadian National Railways (CNR) between 1918
and 1960 and as Canadian National/Canadien National (CN) from 1960 to present.
The EMD SD40-2W is a Canadian-market version of the SD40-2 diesel-electric
locomotive, built for the Canadian National Railway by the Diesel Division of General
Motors of Canada Ltd. (formerly General Motors Diesel) of London, Ontario.
A total of 123 were constructed between May 1975 and December 1980. The major
difference between the SD40-2W and a regular SD40-2 is the fitment of a wide-nose
Canadian ‘comfort cab’, denoted by the 'W' in the model name.
The Canadian comfort cab or wide cab is a broad-nosed cab design found on several
diesel locomotive types. It occupies the entire width of the locomotive, and typically
has an access door on the front.
The wide cab is built with a specially reinforced nose. Instead of sheet metal, 1/8inch-thick (3 mm) armour steel is used. This allows locomotives to simply plough
through anything in their way with only minor paint damage. Also, toughened vertical
supports reinforce the nose, keeping the crew safe. In addition, the windows of the
cab meet Federal Railroad Administration Regulations Part 223, which states that
windows must withstand the impact of a .22 calibre bullet or a cinder block.
The Canadian comfort cab is notably more spacious for the crew. It has significantly
more open space than a standard locomotive cab, allowing crew members space to
move about. In later years, the cab doors had improved weather strips and
electrically heated windows installed. Many new EMD locomotives include the feature
of the "Whisper Cab", a cab that is acoustically isolated from the rest of the
locomotive.

2.2 89ft Flatcar
This intermodal car is a common sight on US railroads due to the versatility of cargo
carried. Measuring 89 feet and 4 inches in length these flatcars can carry a 53ft
trailer or two 45ft trailers or three 28ft “pup” trailers or four 20ft containers; or even
a mixture of types.
Supplied in the pack are three empty base flatcars in yellow, grey and red. These
three units then have two additional variants carrying a single 45ft trailer and two
45ft trailers (the yellow base carrying white trailers, grey carrying blue and red
carrying beige) for a total of nine variants.

2.3 4 Chute Covered Hopper
This 4-chute covered hopper is used to transport goods which need to be protected
from the elements when an open-top hopper is not appropriate. The four doors on
the underside are used to discharge the cargo. The types of loose bulk commodities
shipped in these cars commonly include fertilizer, grain and sugar although any type
of loose dry goods or aggregate can be transported.
There are four variants of the 4-chute covered hopper contained in the freight car
pack in a range of industrial colours.

2.4 Centre Beam Flatcar
The popular center beam bulkhead flatcars are used on the railroad for
transportation of materials such as building material or lumber contained in packages
of uniform size. They are preferred over standard flatcars because of their higher
load capacity due to the central reinforcement.
There are three base units supplied in the freight car pack in yellow, red and blue
liveries. Each of these empty base units has a loaded variant.
