is back! This year’s festival features an

Sand, Sea and Spray
13–15 June
This international street festival sees huge
names from the world of urban art descend
on Blackpool. Watch as live graffiti is
sprayed on a variety of buildings
throughout the resort. Urban art is rapidly
growing with highly acclaimed art galleries
around the world scrambling to feature the
latest big names and Blackpool has
certainly pulled the long straw with artists
travelling thousands of miles to take part in
this not-to-be-missed Free event.
Blackpool Armed Forces Week
23–29 June
Blackpool continues to support the British
armed Forces by hosting a week long
celebration honouring serving military past,
present and future. during this week the
entire town comes together with a range
of special offers for members of the armed
forces and their families. The activities
include free concerts, exhibitions, military
and ceremonial tributes and much,
much more.
Blackpool Air Show
10 & 11 august
Blackpool hosted the Uk’s first official air
show in 1909 and now the event is staged
annually with jaw dropping aerobatic stunts
and fly-bys from some incredible aircraft no
longer in commission. last year this Free
air Show was extended over two days and

100 YEARS
Ask anyone in Blackpool what
the most historic business name
in the resort is and it’s more
than likely you will hear the
name Petulengro.
n fact, it’s very difficult to walk
around Blackpool without seeing this
name emblazoned above a cosy,
welcoming booth because the
petulengro’s have been known for more
than a 100 years as THe Blackpool
fortune tellers.
I
ever since the late 1890’s the family has
had a presence in the resort and from
north pier to Blackpool pleasure Beach
and then back down the prom to coral
Island, the petulengro’s can still be found
reading palms.
and the business doesn’t stop there
because this family also has a traditional
sweet shop, music business, café and
ice-cream and donut stands.

Gypsy Sarah petulengro, who reads palms
from a booth in Blackpool pleasure Beach,
says it’s great to be part of a long family
tradition.
She said: “It all officially started with my
Great-Granny alice eva and we’ve been in
Blackpool ever since.
“Today you will find myself, my mum leah,
my daughter Julie and my sister debra all
working in Blackpool.
“We were born into this and it is lovely to
be such a part of Blackpool’s history. We
have clients who return time and time
again, including well known names, and
of course we have people come to see
us who have never had their fortune told
before.”
and Sarah says while she’s seen enormous
and positive changes to Blackpool, her
clientele has also changed a lot over the
years.
“I’ve been doing this for 34 years now,
since I was 15,” she added. “It always
used to be housewives who came into
see us but you get a lot of men and
younger guys wanting me to read their
palms now too, and that in itself,
makes it more interesting.
“You really do feel like you are
helping people and it is so enjoyable
to meet so many different people.
“Blackpool has such a fascinating
history anyway and I really feel that
we, as a family, are adding to that. I do
hope so and I do hope that our family
tradition continues for at least another
100 years.”

The name petulengro
actually means Blacksmith
in romany. The family’s
original name was Smith
and because of their dark
romany looks they became
known as the Blacksmith’s,
hence the change to
petulengro.

WORLD WAR I

It’s 100 years since the outbreak of World War I and to commemorate
this historic event Blackpool will be remembering our fallen heroes
and the impact the war itself had on the resort

underground. The big dig will be
supervised by professional archaeologists
and everything discovered will go on
display at a reconstruction date later in

And throughout the year Blackpool
Council is concentrating on three key
projects to commemorate WWI.
The unique projection programme at
Blackpool’s seafront War Memorial will
be refreshed and re-designed to
commemorate the centenary year.
DUG IN
Did you know Blackpool was a major
base for trench training during WWI?
dug In is an exhibition looking at the work
undertaken on the trench training system
under Watson road park. The Watson
road site is unique as it was the only
training site ever opened to the public as
a visitor attraction. The money from this
went to support the local convalescent
hospital for wounded soldiers. The
exhibition will reproduce images and
information uncovered during the research
into the trench system and the First World
War's social impact on Blackpool.

This exhibition will then move to the
extended and refurbished pavilion at
Watson road park so you can catch it
for the rest of the year.
THE LOOS & ARRAS
TRENCHES PROJECT

road park. With evidence from dug In,

that we have to ensure Blackpool plays
a key role in those commemorations
“The dug In exhibition and our
archaeological dig are a great opportunity
to show residents and visitors how the war
affected local people, but also how they
used their knowledge of tourism to create
the only tour of the trenches available in
Britain to support medical care for
wounded soldiers. It’s a moving story of
how local people used local skills to help
the war effort.
“We are also particularly excited about our
plans for the War Memorial and as the
home of the Illuminations there just isn’t a
better way to commemorate those people
from Blackpool who died serving their
country.”

the stage at the 2013
Switch-On Weekend, but who

With headline performances from Gary
Barlow and Madness the crowds could

from American rockers The Killers with

filmed in Blackpool.
Tune into CBeebies or CBBC and you
will regularly see Blackpool in the
background whether it’s would-be Blue
Peter presenters trying out Blackpool
Pleasure Beach’s Big One rollercoaster
or children’s funnyman Justin Fletcher
filming with youngsters in the Sandcastle
Waterpark.
Then there was the big one for 2013
when Harry Hill the Movie was filmed
almost entirely in Blackpool with none
other than Brit favourite Julie Walters,
BAFTA Award-winning actress Sheridan
Smith, comic genius Matt Lucas and,
of course, Harry Hill.
More recently Blackpool has even
welcomed the Meerkats from the
Compare the Market ad’ idents which
run around the soap. A series of adverts
were filmed in summer 2013 involving the
Meerkats enjoying a day trip away from
Coronation Street to visit Blackpool.
“Of course, the story was set in Blackpool
and therefore it was essential that we
filmed there but that is not always the
case and very often you have to create a
location in another town or even a film
studio. But on this occasion we
absolutely had to film in Blackpool and
it was perfect.
“I have filmed in numerous
seaside resorts and I can
honestly say Blackpool has it
all. Sea, beautiful stretches of
Promenade, the all-important
Blackpool Tower, beaches,
funfair rides, the list goes on.
It really is a unique
location and while it was great
for filming, the whole cast and
crew had a great time
staying there.”
It’s well documented that TV soap
Coronation Street has been to the resort
too many times to mention. Whether it
was a nostalgic trip for Jack and Vera,
younger cast members having fun days
out or the never forget moment when
Alan Bradley met his maker.
“It is never just a case of someone turning
up with a camera and shooting. Weeks
and sometimes many months of planning

Air Show
All eyes will be skyward as
Blackpool’s breath-taking
Air Show returns for two
days on Sunday 10 and
Monday 11 August 2014.
Blackpool has been wowing the public
since 1909 when the town put on the
very first official air show in Britain. That
was the same year French flyer Louis
Bleriot made the first historic crossing of
the English Channel.
And in 2014 stunning aerobatic displays
and daring feats of bravery will be on
display for two days as thousands of
visitors swarm to the resort for the
awe-inspiring event.

Fun on the beach, white knuckle rides, the home of
entertainment and of course the famous Blackpool Tower.
You’d be forgiven for thinking Blackpool is all about thrills,
spills and seaside holidays
In fact, Blackpool and the
surrounding Fylde Coast are
also the perfect location for
business and enterprise.
There are endless opportunities for new
investment and development in the
tourism sector with continual requirements
for new hotel accommodation, new
attractions and associated food and retail
outlets.
And while the leisure sector still forms the
backbone of the economy, the area has

In recent years Blackpool town centre
has seen significant investment creating
a vastly improved public realm and

particular, the Houndshill Shopping Centre

The world famous coastal tramway has
been transformed into a new £110 m light
railway linking the town to Fleetwood,
while Muse Developments creation of a
Central Business District (CBD) around
Blackpool North Railway Station which will
open by Easter 2014, is anchored by new
offices for Blackpool Council and a
Sainsbury’s food store, and is perfectly
placed to offer new office and retail
accommodation. The tram system will
also be extended to serve North Station in
the next few years.
The site of Blackpool’s original
railway station, once earmarked for
the super casino project, is also on
target to deliver a £250m
leisure-focused development by
2018 - bringing with it the prospect
of more than a million additional
visitors to the resort and a
thousand new jobs.

We caught up with the Higgins family after they’d had a busy weekend exploring
seven fun-filled attractions. Here’s what mum, Sarah, thought of their trip:

Blackpool so I thought it
would be difficult to please everyone
but we were all kept hugely entertained.
We started our trip in the 4D cinema
experience at The Blackpool Tower and it
was absolutely fantastic. It told the story of
Blackpool and how it became such a
popular resort. The 4D effects were also
brilliant and the children especially loved
the spraying water.
We all walked out on to the
SkyWalk, 380ft at the top of The
Blackpool Tower to take in the
breakthtaking views. There’s a
solid glass viewing platform

The next morning we woke up refreshed
and ready to go. After grabbing some
breakfast, we headed back down the
promenade and decided our first stop
of the day would be Madame Tussauds.
We then went back in to Th

The Blackpool Tower Ballroom
was absolutely breathtaking and
I could tell from the look on mum’s
face that she was in her element.
We sat down at a spare table and
listened to the Wurlitzer organ
playing whilst enjoying our
afternoon tea.
Callum’s a bit of an explorer at heart so he
went straight for Bear Grylls wax figure and
was clambering all over the rock which
formed part of the display! Mum loved
wandering around; she was amazed at how
realistic they looked. I also found Ben
posing for his picture next to the Keith
Lemon wax figure; that’s definitely one for
the family album!
After a while, Ben and Callum came and
met us with big smiles on their faces.
Callum was holding a big picture in his
hand that was taken on the drop ride at
the end of the Dungeon tour – they’re
both pulling hilarious faces.
I looked around the table and everyone
had huge smiles and I just thought –
mission complete, a weekend away to
suit the whole family.

It has never been easier to travel across
Blackpool and the Fylde coast than on the
