2015 South Atlantic Championships - A Class Act!
What an extraordinary display of volunteerism and teamwork! In spite of a grueling schedule for
back-to-back competitions, our volunteers stepped up in innumerable ways to ensure that we would host
the best South Atlantics ever - and did we! A heartfelt thank you to our Executive Committee: Christi
Fisher, Robert Osenbaugh, Jan Brown, and Jane Jud and to all of our unsung heroes!
Our goal was to provide an opportunity for as many members as possible to experience a regional
competition without the expense of travel and unexcused school absences. More than 100 members competed: 19 in
qualifying and 89 in non-qualifying. Thirty-three non-qualifying skaters medaled in their free skate programs, and 18
advanced to final rounds. Two of our final round qualifiers, Kaitlyn McGarigle and Melanie Schael, also medaled in those
events.
In the qualifying competition, Intermediate Maria Son landed 4th place in her qualifying round to advance to final rounds,
and Junior Alice Qiao won bronze and a position at Eastern Sectionals. Nine members earned U.S. Figure Skating Special
Achievement Awards for +2 or +3 grades of execution, and Madeleine Brown won her Intermediate Ladies qualifying
group’s highest points for spins.
We are so proud of all of our members for their sportsmanship, generosity, and dedication to this beautiful sport and club.
Our members are simply the best, a descriptor echoed by officials, coaches, skaters and parents. Congratulations!
Alice Qiao, Tim Dolensky Advance to Eastern Sectionals
Junior Lady Alice Qiao earned a berth at the 2015
Eastern Sectional Championships by capturing bronze at
the 2015 South Atlantic Regional Championships. Last
year, she garnered 7th place honors in her first year as a Novice at the
2014 Easterns as well as the pewter medal at the 2014 South Atlantic
Championships. She also finished in 5th place at the 2013 Easterns
following a gold medal performance at the 2013 South Atlantics as an
Intermediate.
Senior Men’s competitor Tim Dolensky claimed 13th place at the 2014
U.S. Championships after a gold medal performance at the 2014 Eastern
Sectionals. He is the 2012 U.S. Championships Junior Men’s silver
medalist.
The Eastern Sectional Championships will be held on November 18 - 22,
hosted by the Triangle FSC in Wake Forest, NC. Don’t miss the
exhibition and party on November 7 during Club Ice.

U.S. Figure Skating Special Achievement Awards
The U.S. Figure Skating Special Achievement Awards are
pins given to athletes to encourage performance-related
markers in their programs at regionals and sectionals.
Awards are presented only for the free skate event segments
in all levels at regionals, and in juvenile through novice pairs,
singles and free dance at sectionals.
Awards are earned by the skater, couple or pair in each group that earns the
most points for designated elements for their level and discipline and to all
skaters who earn at least one +2 or +3 Grade of Execution for any element in
their program.

SPOTLIGHT SKATER
What are your favorite and least
favorite elements?
What are your future skating and
educational goals?
My favorite elements are jumps. I love to jump up
in the air and feel like I am defying gravity. My least
favorite element is probably footwork because there
are a lot of different and confusing steps.
By the time I graduate, I want to test all of my
Moves in the Field through Senior Level (I
am currently working on Junior). By the end
of this year, I want to make all of the jumps I
am working on now consistent.
Competitive accomplishments
I will be going to college and would like to
skate and maybe coach skating while I am in
college. I am going to study to be a physical
therapist.
My competitive accomplishments include 3rd place
in the free skate qualifying round of the 2013 South
Atlantic NQ Regionals and 4th place in free skate at
the 2014 South Atlantic NQ Regionals.
Favorite program
My favorite program is my current short program,
“Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. I like it because it is
upbeat and fun to practice.
Whom do you admire most?
My coach, Chrissy Imperiale, has taught me a lot
about skating and about life through skating. I
admire her because she never gives up on any
student, no matter what the challenges may be.
She works hard to find creative new ways to teach
and to get the best out of her students. Any coach
can coach a gifted skater; it takes an exceptional
coach to find the gifts in all of her skaters… and
being better than you ever thought you could be in
this sport is better than winning any medal.

I am extremely dyslexic, but skating has
helped me prove to myself that I can
overcome it. Another interesting fact that
people don’t know is that I am 25% Native
American. My dad is half and my grandmother
is full Native American.

What is the most memorable event of your skating career?
My favorite memory of skating is when I participated in the Spring Show two
years with a solo piece as part of group of three girls. As I skated my solo
piece, I saw both my mom and my coach crying. Once I was done skating,
my coach came over and gave me a hug and said that I was beautiful.

Who is your favorite skater?
Jason Brown is my favorite skater because he is very hard-working, graceful,
kind, and consistent and never gives up.
Tell us about your school and extracurricular activities.
I attend Pope High School, 10th grade and my favorite subject is math. I am
in Key Club and Foreign Language Club for Spanish. My honors include
consistently being on either the all A or A&B Honor roll.
I work with children ages from 3 months to 10 years old at my church. I also
participate with my church in volunteer community improvement activities,
such as working with the homeless and helping the elderly. I am also a
member of Key Club, which helps out around the community.
Tell us about your family.
My sister, McKenzie,18, attends Georgia Southern University. My best friend
Monica is my “skating sister” who practices with me almost every day, and
we love our skating road trips!! I also have a fluffy orange cat named
Pumpkin.
What famous person would you most like to meet?
Jennifer Lawrence, because she is a very good actress, she’s pretty, and
she seems like she would be cool to hang out with. She is not afraid to be
herself no matter what people think.
