“The Living Building Challenge™ successfully shows how
humans and their built environment can be harmoniously,
benignly integrated within ecosystems. Above all, its
rigorous standards and daringly innovative, revolutionary
approach to building are already having a considerable
impact on the thinking of designers and architects
around the world, influencing all levels of design and
technological approaches, radically pushing forward
the field.”
So said the Buckminster Fuller Challenge jury in June
2012, as they awarded our signature program top
honors. Needless to say, we were thrilled and humbled
by this news. My mentor, Bob Berkebile, was a student of
Bucky’s, so this award felt particularly significant to me.
But the big news isn’t what we achieved, but why we
achieved it. The Buckminster Fuller Challenge jury
scrutinized the success of our concept in the field. They
looked at the work that project teams are doing around
the world. They examined the impact that our Materials
Red List is having on industry. They talked to us about
‘Declare’, our new materials disclosure label.
What they found is an idea that has become a powerful
force for good in the world, a program whose success
is the success of our large and growing community of
change agents—people committed to creating a Living
Future in their communities. The pages that follow tell
the story of this network of global citizens who have
taken our vision and made it their own.
We have a long way to go, but when I look at the
progress we’ve made together, I feel very good about
the future.
In friendship,
Jason F. McLennan

INNOVATION
As our programs grew in 2012, we also made time to launch some major new initiatives and
efforts. The specifics of our work may vary, but the goal is always the same: to create a Living
Future that is socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative. Our way of working is
to find trim tab opportunities or leverage points to quickly and effectively create transformative
change.
DECLARE:
By providing a clear ingredients list for building products, Declare helps consumers make
conscious, informed decisions, and provides manufactures of ecologically sound products a way
to demonstrate market leadership and secure a competitive advantage. We launched Declare
in October of 2012, since then there are 39 companies participating in the program with over 58
products that have been Declared. These companies are demonstrating real market leadership
while also allowing builders and designers to make more informed decisions. We’ve also
connected with many more companies to help inform and impact future product development.
Since its launch, Declare has been covered by numerous media outlets including Architectural
Record.

ECONOMICS OF CHANGE:
Offers a new model for real estate investment that will remove the artificial financial
disincentives for deep green buildings and clear the way for dramatic improvement in the
built environment’s relationship to the ecosystems it inhabits. The “Economics of Change”
will be successful when it has helped to shift hundreds of billions of dollars of real estate
investment towards restorative buildings. This is an ongoing project with our goal to expand
the methodologies used to evaluate the multiple benefits of high performance green buildings
and infrastructure. In 2012, we’ve made parternships with leading-edge companies helping to
make this happen.
THE OREGON BEST RED LIST CHALLENGE:
We partnered with OregonBEST, an innovative organization that stands at the intersection
of Oregon’s university system and private industry and asked people to submit their designs
for original building products that meet identified critical needs of Living Building Challenge™
projects, using materials drawn from the rich resources of the State of Oregon. This
design competition embodies our belief in the power of global visions to spur placebased entrepreneurship.
10
INNOVATION
LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE™:
The built environment’s most rigorous and ambitious performance standard grew exponentially
in 2012, with numerous registered projects around the world ranging from Haiti to New Zealand.
With the release of the Living Building Challenge version 2.1, we strengthened the technical rigor
of the program and further developed online tools for project teams pursuing the Challenge.
We kicked off the Understanding the Living Building Challenge Workshop Series that travelled
to Canada, the United States, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. The workshops provided an
in-depth introduction to the Living Building Challenge and helped attendees identify the key
components of the program, discuss the rationale for restorative design principles, understand
successful strategies for compliance with each performance area, recognize financial, regulatory
and behavioral barriers and much more.

NET ZERO ENERGY BUILDING CERTIFICATION:
The program team hit the ground running in developing this new certification program based
on the structure of the Living Building Challenge. In 2012, the first two projects were certified
with many more registered.
LIVING COMMUNITIES:
Living Communities addresses a current and pressing need for an ambitious, compelling and
actionable vision for radically transforming how existing cities relate to the resources they
rely upon. This project will support and promote both visionary leaders and inspirational city
models and policies. Living Communities tap into the enthusiasm generated by the Living
Building Challenge and help cities transform these visionary efforts into practical, leverageable and transferrable solutions. The Institute began helping city leaders assess and redefine
their existing policy structures and informing city leaders about transformative urban planning
models. Our goal is that these planning projects evolve into demonstration projects in the pilot
cities to promote a new paradigm for urban sustainability based on an endgame philosophy
of true sustainability.

TRIM TAB:
Our magazine for transformational people + design continued to push the bar of innovative and
cutting-edge content with themes including Women Reshaping the World, Net Zero Water and
Energy, the Buckminster Fuller School of Thought, and Materials. Our mission for the magazine
is to focus on critical issues and leverage points for effecting change and truly transforming the
built environment. Pioneers in the movement were interviewed including Sim Van Ryn - architect
and author, Vandana Shiva - author and environmental leader, Janine Benyus - Biomimicry
3.8, and Ed Mazria - Architecture 2030. Building projects that showcased ecological design
were highlighted that were as diverse in design as they were in location, ranging from rural
Massachusetts to the Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada.

COMMUNICATIONS:
We launched our new website platform that accommodates the Trim Tab blog, which shares the
most inspiring stories about working toward creating a world that is socially just, culturally rich
and ecologically restorative. Our web traffic has increased significantly, furthering our reach and
becoming a powerful conduit for our mission.
ECOTONE PUBLISHING:
Transformational Thought, Jason McLennan’s newest book is a collection of his essays from Trim
Tab Magazine. Covering everything from the concept of beauty to the best tools for designing
advanced green buildings, Transformational Thought is an evocative guide to a dynamic
movement and a great resource to those working toward creating communities that are truly
healthy and sustainable for future generations. In order for easier international circulation,
Ecotone released the Philosophy of Sustainable Design, Zugunruhe and Transformational
Thought as eBooks.

PROJECTS
TAKING ROOT
Living Building Challenge projects are taking shape in every kind of region and climate. In 2012,
we celebrated as project teams moved from the drawing board to the construction site and
ideas became living, breathing buildings.
The year’s most exciting development was the certification of the first two projects, Painter’s
Hall (Salem, Oregon) and Ideas Z2 (San Jose, California), under our Net Zero Energy Building
Program.

A BIOREGION
MOBILIZED FOR CHANGE
Cascadia’s vision is to display our deepest leadership in our own backyard and to lead the
world in progressive policy reform, the uptake of the Living Building Challenge, and the
creation of deeply transformed communities working hard toward true sustainability. We
do this through a highly effective network and regionally attuned education, advocacy and
community engagement.
WATER REFORM WORKSHOP SERIES:
The water workshops focused on guiding Puget Sound communities toward 21st century
water strategies. There were six workshops in different counties throughout the Puget Sound
that presented our water research and engaged a panel of local decision-makers in reflecting on
the relevance of the research to their upcoming and future water infrastructure choices.
BUILD SMALL LIVE LARGE HOUSING SUMMIT:
This summit gathered leaders in the development, real estate, building and design sector from
across the bioregion for an intensive day of inspiration, project case studies and peer-to-peer
learning. Industry professionals explored innovative designs and learned about the financial
success stories emerging across our area. Key topics included, financing the small house,
emerging trends in urban development, accessory dwelling units, demographic shifts & market
demand, space-efficient design, and more.
25
SUSTAINABLE CITIES ROUNDTABLE:
We worked with King County GreenTools to coordinate a monthly roundtable for cities within
Washington’s most populous county. The goal was to provide cities with practical education
on topics ranging from how to launch a green building program to how to organize social
marketing for a city’s sustainability initiatives. City mayors were invited to sign onto a pledge
to collaborate with fellow signers to address climate change at a regional scale.
GOVERNMENT CONFLUENCE:
The Government Confluence, co-hosted by Metro Regional Government, was designed to
inspire fresh thinking, promote collaboration and provide tools to help make communities
greater. Aimed at public sector leaders from the Pacific Northwest, the Confluence helped
policy makers, managers, planners, building code officials and others tackle sustainability
challenges unique to local government. This unique ‘meeting of the minds’ allowed government
staff and officials to learn about cutting-edge topics, replicable case studies, funding
opportunities and sustainability planning tools.
2 0 1 2 A N N UA L R E P O R T
ADVISORY BOARD PARTICIPATION:
We participated in many advisory boards in order to provide expertise in the green building area
and be a voice for positive change in the Cascadia bioregion. Advisory boards included the
Seattle 2030 District that seeks to develop realistic, measurable, and innovative strategies to
assist district property owners, managers, and tenants in meeting aggressive goals that reduce
environmental impacts of facility construction and operations. Other boards included the
Snohomish County Development Task Force, Seattle Energy Tech Advisory Group, Metro
Healthy Communities, DeCon Program Committee, and Washington Green Schools Advisory
Council.

ACTION
The Ambassador Network is a global volunteer initiative to encourage the rapid and
widespread adoption of restorative principles guided by the Living Building Challenge.
Within this network, individuals and local groups called Living Building Challenge
Collaboratives discuss restorative principles, share expertise, and remove cultural,
regulatory and ideological barriers to systematic change. In 2012, the Ambassador
Network grew to 50 Collaboratives throughout the world and has inspired project teams
to adopt the Living Building Challenge.

Something very exciting happened in August 2012: Australia’s community of green building
pioneers announced the creation of the Living Future Institute Australia. The new Institute,
driven by leaders from government, local communities and higher education, is already
capturing the attention and enthusiasm of a broad audience.
International Living Future Institute CEO, Jason F. McLennan travelled to Australia to help
celebrate this important milestone, delivering a series of lectures and workshops as part of the
2012 Living Building Challenge Australian Tour. As Warren Overton, Chair of the Living Future
Institute Australia board put it, “Jason left a trail of inspired people in his wake and set us up to
make a big impact in Australia.”
With three registered projects in the university sector, and numerous other projects coming
online in Australia and New Zealand, the Challenge is beginning to have a deep impact in
Oceania. The University of Wollongong has two registered projects now in construction with the
Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC), putting Wollongong in the running to be the first
completed Living Building Challenge project in Australia, alongside the Global Change Institute
at the University of Queensland.

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES
FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 2012
The International Living Future Institute closed FY12 with a modest $256,000 unrestricted
operating surplus despite the difficult economy. Temporarily restricted net assets, which
represent donor-restricted funds to be used in future years, decreased by $347,000 as we
began implementation of some of the large grants awarded to us in FY11. The Institute closed
the year with temporarily restricted net assets of $551,000, which will fund programs over the
coming two to three years.
While we enter FY13 with considerable restricted resources to support our core programs,
we continue to strive to build our unrestricted reserves to provide us with the flexible funding
necessary to respond to opportunities.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL LIVING FUTURE INSTITUTE:
The International Living Future Institute is an environmental
NGO committed to catalyzing the transformation toward
communities that are socially just, culturally rich and
ecologically restorative. Composed of leading green building
experts and thought-leaders, the Institute is premised on
the belief that providing a compelling vision for the future
is a fundamental requirement for reconciling humanity’s
relationship with the natural world. It operates the Living
Building Challenge, Declare, Cascadia Green Building
Council, Ecotone Publishing and other critical leading-edge
programs. The Living Building Challenge is the 2012 winner
of the Buckminster Fuller Prize.
