o general acclaim, President James Michel announced during his Independence Day speech, measures
meant to improve the lives of
public sector employees and
pensioners. A few of these declarations have proven controversial and they have raised the ire
of some in such circles, namely
the political ones. The first some
people heard of a 13th month
salary increment, was in May
when the Seychelles National
Party (SNP), was announcing
its political manifesto, should it
come into power.

More money in public sector employees’ and pensioners’ pockets
No hotel at
Cap Ternay
President Michel has placed a moratorium on all large
hotel builds in the country.
“
Today I want to put a stop, once and for all, to all these speculations.
There will be no construction of any hotel at Cap Ternay”. This statement was made by the President of the Republic, James Michel, on
Monday 29 June in his speech on the occasion of the National Day celebrations. This comes after sceptics were saying that the President could
change his mind once elections had taken place, should he win. However,
during his speech, President Michel firmly put the issue at rest. Furthermore, a moratorium preventing any other large hotels from being built
in the country has been placed with immediate effect by the President.
However, he stated, this does not include “those projects for which approval has already been granted, or for which a commitment had been
made by Government.” As of now, it remains unclear how many projects
had already been approved before the moratorium came into effect.

the teaching and learning of science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) in Africa
MOU signed between African Union Commission (AUC) and African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in quest to
strengthen education in key sectors as science, technology, engineering and mathematics in order to promote Africa’s rapid development. Organisations to come together in NEF to promote a strong African scientific community.

strengthening the teaching and
learning of Science, Technology,

(STEM) on the African continent. The signing took place at
the headquarters of the African
Union Commission in Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the AUC Commissioner
for Human Resources, Science
and Technology (HRST), Dr.
Martial De-Paul Ikounga underlined the importance of science,
technology and innovation in the

For the SNP, President Michel’s announcement is being
interpreted as a blatant political move. According to Wavel
Ramkalawan, the leader of
the Seychelles National Party
(SNP), the timing of this announcement is questionable
due to the fact that elections
are thought to be just around
the corner.
“This Government has been
in power for a very long time
and nothing regarding the
thirteenth month salary has
ever been made mention of.
The President only came up
with this proposal regards
public servants after the SNP
revealed their intentions. Why
is that? Is it because SNP mentioned it first? Why has it taken
the President this long to announce this increment? Why
was it not announced five or
ten years ago?”
In May, the SNP announced
that if they came into power, all
public servants would be paid a
13th month salary, regardless of
their position in society inclusive of all Ministers and Members of the National Assembly.
Mr. Ramkalawan went on
to say that “we have learnt
through Nation on Saturday
that there was in actuality no
leak in the Finance and Trade
Department as previously
claimed by Principal Secretary
Patrick Payet. Instead, they are
now saying that there was a
loophole”.
According to the President’s
speech, the 13th month salary
will be offered to all employees
based on their performance.
However, the criteria has not
been set yet.
Regarding the President’s
SCR500 increment announcement starting in December
this year for those on social security, such as pensioners, this
is as a means of improving the
standards of living for them.

stated that “the SNP also gives
its commitment to review the
present system of pension for
politicians to correspond to
what is applicable for workers in general. Workers of Seychelles need to be properly rewarded. We seek to give people

“Our people have made
enough sacrifices. Now is the
time to give every worker a
better deal, with the hope that
families will be strengthened
and our society will once again
adhere to a higher standard of
work ethics. We need to move
people away from welfare to
employment”, concluded Mr.
Ramkalawan.
Whether or not it was a wise
political move by President
Michel at the end of the day,
remains to be seen. The bigger
questions on everyone’s minds
are where the money will come
from to fund these plans and
who will have to bear the burden of such largesse.

This signing comes as the African Union Commission takes
steps to achieve Agenda 2063
- the vision of Africa by Africans
for the next 50 years. This collaboration envisaged between
AIMS and the AUC will therefore
empower young Africans to excel
in science, technology and innovation, thereby contributing towards
the achievement of the goals of
Agenda 2063. Popularly themed
‘The Africa We Want’, the African
Union Agenda 2063 encapsulates the voice of Africa’s people
and their aspirations for the next
50 years. It emphasizes inclusive
prosperity, integration, community participation, good governance
and peace as well as investment in
Africa’s youth and women.
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a
pan-African network of centres of
excellence for postgraduate education, research and outreach in
mathematical sciences.

Dear Editor
Thanks for a space in your newspaper. I am currently being employed by Banyan Tree Resort and Spa and I’ve been there for approximate three years.
It is my feeling and those of my colleagues that we are being
robbed by our Financial Controller, General Manager and Human
Resource Manager. After this team was put into place at the resort,
everything changed. From the bonus that we used to receive every
six months (we were due last month), we have not heard anything
as yet. The month was quite busy at the hotel, especially with the
arrival of a particular Arabic family, who spent seven days there –
some people have had to work morning until the next and off days
have been cancelled. All of this was because the Arabs were spending unbelievable amounts of money. Yet, the service charge is the
lowest it has ever been.
What is the most annoying is the Financial Controller who spends
his day smiling as if he’s in on some personal joke. We work extremely hard at this resort and in March and April, some staff went
on strike. Management terminated some of them, whilst others
were given a final warning. Obviously, no one will dare do it again,
as we all have families to support. So, they know that we will not do
anything to jeopardize our jobs, as we have nowhere to turn. Even
the Department of Employment is refusing to look into the matter.
We are writing this article so that the whole world will know that
despite some of these big hotels looking pretty on the outside, the
amount of hardship that the employees are working under is equal
to slavery.

How will America’s decision on same-sex marriage affect Seychelles?
I
t’s official. The United States
of America (USA) legalised
same-sex marriages on Friday 26 June in all 50 states. As
the churches rally in an effort
to thwart the doom and gloom
heading USA’s way – à la Sodom and Gomorrah, we should
all realise the implications of
this court decision. The world is
shrinking and everything is interlinked. As with the same-sex
wedding held on our very shores
recently, we should come to the
realisation that we do not live
within a vacuum and that the
decisions made in the outside
world can have far-reaching implications, even to our small island state.
The gay rights movement is
quickly gaining momentum all
over the world. Only last month
Ireland, a devoutly Christian nation backed same-sex marriages
by a landslide in a referendum.
Opinion polls in America are
also showing that homosexuality
has gained increasing acceptance
in recent years, particularly with
the younger generations. Should
then the question be ‘when’ will
same-sex marriages be made legal in Seychelles as opposed to
‘will’?
Although the US Supreme
Court’s 5-4 ruling was no landslide by any stretch of the
imagination, what is interesting
though, is that it points to how
much accumulated power there
is in “we the people”. Case in
point; Hillary Rodham Clinton,
currently running for President
in the USA, has a complicated
history with gay rights. Her husband, Bill Clinton, who was the
President of the USA from 1993
– 2001, during his mandate,
signed the Defence of Marriage
Act (DOMA), which prohibited
the federal government from
recognising same-sex marriages.
Mr. Clinton also approved the
controversial “don’t ask, don’t
tell” bill, which had prevented
openly gay men and women
from serving in the US military.
Bill Clinton has come forward
as recently as 2013 to admit that
he regretted signing DOMA into
law – just in time for his wife’s
run at presidency.
Gay rights activists have been
burning the midnight oil finding ways to promote their cause
inch by excruciating inch and
it is thanks to their effort that
shows like Ellen Degeneres is
now accepted, when only a few
years earlier Degeneres’ comedic show ‘Ellen’ got pulled from
TV because it was felt that it was
not ‘right’ to have an openly gay
woman as a lead character in a
show. It is thanks in part to these
gay rights activists, promoting
continuous portrayal of homosexuals in sympathetic roles in
the media, that people are more
open and accepting towards homosexuals today in America and
in other parts of the world. The
LGBT movement is now recognised as a force to be reckoned
with and should it be said, their
power as voters and their influ-
ence over family and friends.
Fabianna Bonne made some
very pertinent points in her recent interview in our paper of
22 June 2015. According to her,
politicians “would rather have
the majority on their side and
gay people are viewed to be a
minority” currently. However, as
she goes on to say “each gay person has friends and belongs to
a family... I speak to all of them
and I could very much convince
them to vote or not to vote for
a particular person depending
on how I feel they would treat
the issue of human rights”. If we
think of Fabianna’s comments
on a wider scale, let us assume
that every openly gay person in
Seychelles can influence their
friends and families to vote for
those who would have their best
interests at heart. Fabianna observed that “it’s very interesting
now that we are celebrating our
Constitution which affirms our
rights and I believe this argument would sway people. It
would definitely sway people
who are close to those who feel
their rights are being violated.
This is what happened in Ireland that is also a very Catholic
country and where 62% of people voted for equal rights for the
gay community. Politicians fail
to recognise that”.
Should we be looking forward

electoral campaigns in the next
elections?

money go?
Less than 10% of the money was used by the government for reforming its economy and
safeguarding weaker members of society.
TODAY: You must have noticed that during this debate, not one politician has spoken out for
equal rights. Does this bother you?
Fabianna Bonne: I think that being politicians they would rather have the majority on their side and
gay people are viewed to be a minority. I will not hold it against them; if I were a politician, this would
be what I would do too but we have to think of this on a larger scale. Each gay person has friends and
belongs to a family. In my family, I have my mother and her five brothers and sisters and they have
children of voting age. I speak to all of them and I could very much convince them to vote or not to
vote for a particular person depending on how I feel they would treat the issue of human rights.
TODAY: Would voters in Seychelles be swayed by the human rights argument, you think?
Fabianna Bonne: Human rights is something that a lot of people talk about in Seychelles. It’s very
interesting now that we’re are celebrating our Constitution which affirm our rights and I believe this
argument would sway people. It would definitely sway people who are close to those who feel their
rights are being violated. This is what happened in Ireland that is also a very Catholic country and
where 62% of people voted for equal rights for the gay. Politicians fail to recognise that. They have
the air for a few hours but I spend all of my time with my family. They know me and they care about
me. Who will they trust more? A person they see every five years or a person they know, a person they
see every day? They understand the issues I have to deal with, the pain that I go through and the suffering that I have to endure.
By setting a poll in Victoria yesterday, TODAY was able to get an idea how a portion of the general
population are feeling about the issue.

O
nly a small fraction of
the EUR240 billion total
bailout money Greece
received in 2010 and 2012,
found its way into the government’s coffers to soften the blow
of the 2008 financial crash and
fund reform programmes. Most
of the money went to the banks
that lent Greece funds before
the crash.
Unlike most of Europe, which
ran up large budget deficits to
protect pensioners and welfare
recipients, Athens was then
forced to dramatically reduce
its deficit by squeezing pensions and cutting the minimum
wage. The lenders first stepped
in during the spring of 2010,
after Athens could no longer af-
ford to finance EUR310 billion
borrowed from a wide range of
major European banks.
Two years later, the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
European Commission and
European Central Bank (ECB)
came up with a second bailout
that centred on a EUR100 billion debt write-off by private
sector lenders. Private bondholders saw the value of their
bonds drop by 53% and took a
further loss by exchanging the
debt for securities with a lower
interest rate.
This
eliminated
about
EUR100 billion of debt, but
EUR34 billion was used to pay
for various “sweeteners” to get
the deal accepted. That EUR34
billion was added to the already
outstanding Greek debt. Greek
pension funds, which were major private lenders, also suffered
terrible losses. Then EUR48.2
billion was used to bail out
Greek banks, which had been
forced to take losses, weakening their ability to protect themselves and depositors.
Lastly, EUR140 billion has
been spent on paying the original debts and interest. Less than
10% of the bailout money was
left to be used by the government
for reforming its economy and
safeguarding weaker members of
society. Greek government debt
is still about EUR320 billion. As
the Jubilee Debt Campaign says:
“The bailouts have been for the
European financial sector, while
passing the debt from being
owed to the private sector to the
public sector.”
Do you think that homosexuals should have the
same rights as heterosexuals?

69 percent think that YES homosexuals should
have the same rights as any ordinary citizen such
as civil marriage. However the majority of those
who said YES, were clearly against homosexuals
adopting children. It is important to note that the
majority of those in the 69 percent were in their
20’s, 30’s and early 40’s. The older generation represented the 31 percent of those who said NO.
56 percent do not think that Seychelles is ready for
such a change in legislature and believe it might
take longer than five years before the Government
or the local community accepts same sex equality.
One person said:
• “Ten years ago, I would have said NO. But earlier this year, my own daughter told me that she
feels confused and scared. My duty as a father is
to be there for her and try to understand her situation. Otherwise, I might risk losing her. It’s not
easy to accept it at first but I look at the bigger
picture which is my daughter’s happiness at the
end of the day,” said a 49 year old father.
Do you think Seychelles is ready for such a

Out of the 100 individuals that were interviewed,
only 16 percent claimed to know homosexuals personally. Out of that 16 percent, only three claimed
to be homosexuals.

Ahmad Arissol returns to winning ways

hmad Arissol returned to
his winning ways as he
won the 49.70km road
race held on Saturday at Petit
2014 Best cyclist of the year
Ahmad Arissol return to
winning ways.
Paris. Arissol had been struggling in the last ten races as he
had been unable to train regularly due to work commitments.
However, on Saturday the 2014
cyclist of the year led a team of
six riders comprising of Dominic
Arrisol, Chris Germain, Ricky
Rosalie, Peter Alphonse and
Chabel Servina, as all six clocked
a time of 1 hour 14 minutes and
36 seconds but Ahmad Arissol
was awarded first position. Classic Design’s Dominic Arrisol was
second whilst Life Cycle’s Chris
Germain came out third.
Overall, Life Cycle was the best
team as Classic Design finished
in second position. Although
Classic Design dominated the
team time trial, as Dominic Arrisol, Edrick Roucou, Ricky Rosalie and Chabel Servina came
out first in the 48.8km team
time trial with a time of 1 hour
2 minutes 39 seconds, the Life
Cycle team made of Ahmad
Arissol, Peter Alphonse, Stephan
Belle and Jean-Yves Souyave was
second with a time of 1 hour 6
minutes.
However, Life Cycle’s Ahmad
Arissol still leads the classification table after race 35 and Eco
Riders’ Confiance is in second
place whereas Dominic Arrisol is third overall. The national
cycling selection is expected to
leave the country this week for a
month’s training camp in France
as preparation for the Island
Games.

Constance leaves for
trials in Switzerland

leaves the country today for trials in Switzerland.
Constance revealed to TODAY
Sports that he will be going for
a one month trial with third division side Stade Lionnais and
said that he is looking forward
to this new challenge in his
young but blossoming career.
“I will try my best to be accepted and if I’m successful,
I will stay there to start a new
phase in my life,” Constance
told TODAY Sports on the eve
of his departure. The 19 year old
defender, who has been loaned
between St Francis and St Louis Suns in the top flight before
returning to his home team on
La Digue, had similar trials in
Switzerland last August but returned here and he explained to
TODAY Sports what happened
then.
“In 2014, I went for trials with
a fourth division side namely
Under 20 skipper Adrian
Constance left Seychelles for
Switzerland on trial.
Courtetelle and I was successful but they could not provide
me with accommodation and
therefore I could not stay and
this time it is different as if I get
through the trials, I will be provided with housing,” Constance

Chile edge 10-man Peru to book final berth after 28 years

reach the Copa America final for
the first time in nearly 30 years.
Vargas, who endured a miserable season on loan at relegated English Premier League side
Queens Park Rangers, lashed in a
stunning 64th-minute strike as the
hosts advanced to the final for the
first time since 1987.
Vargas had given Chile a controversial lead after 42 minutes, prodding home from close range after
the referee’s assistant failed to spot

talk of the town once again for weeks to come by hosting a glitzy event on Saturday 27 June.

are surrounded by some of the
most influential people in society, dressed up to the nines in
their fashionable tuxedos, suits
and red carpet dresses. In the
background, all one hears is the
clinking sounds of wine glasses
and the captivating 1920’s jazz
and blues music. Nope, you have
not been transported into the
pages of The Great Gatsby, but
you might be forgiven for thinking so. This was the glamorous
Grand Ball of Eden Bleu, which
took place on Saturday 27 June,
alongside the National Day celebrations.
The elite guest list attending
the glitzy event consisted of Vice
President Danny Faure, several
cabinet ministers and foreign
dignitaries as well as prominent business leaders. The host
of the night was Eden Island’s
chairman, Craig Heeger, who
in a short speech, welcomed his
guests and explained that the
event was simply a token of his
appreciation towards all those
who supported the Eden Island
development project, which is
about to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year.
“We’ve certainly came a long
way from that day I fell in love
with Seychelles and the Eden Island project. It was not an easy
journey but we succeeded at the
end of the day, thanks to the hard
work, sacrifices and commitment
put in by our employees. I also
take this opportunity to thank
all those who shared our vision
and supported us through thick
and thin. We are so proud to be
part of Seychelles, to the point
we feel the urge to celebrate the
National Day with you all,” said
Mr Heeger.

got the crowds away from their
tables and danced the night
away.
This makes it the second time
in less than a year that the Eden
Blue - Seychelles’ first business
hotel - hosted an event with
international artists that has
wowed its guests. Last year, the
British reggae hit band UB40
performed on a floating stage
for the grand opening of Eden
Bleu. TODAY caught up with
Mr. Heeger during Saturday’s
dazzling event. He revealed that
it is his desire to organise at some
point an event where the general
public will be able to attend.

• Whitetip reef sharks are one of
the most common sharks on IndoPacific coral reefs.
• Females give birth to 1-6 pups every other year after a gestation period
of 10-13 months.
• They are classified as ‘near threatened’. Their slow rate of reproduction
and late maturity makes them vul-
nerable to overfishing
• They prefer clear water and rarely
swim far from the bottom. During
the day they rest in caves or overhangs

Approximately a quarter of all shark
and ray species are listed as ‘endangered’ on the International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources (IUCN) Red List. Due
to the many threats they face, white
tip reef sharks are classified as ‘near
threatened’. Direct threats to sharks
include fishing and bycatch; indirect
threats include climate change, and
habitat loss and pollution due to an
increase in coastal development.
A number of characteristics of
sharks makes them particularly
vulnerable to exploitation. Typically
shark species have a long life span,
mature late and have a slow rate of
reproduction. If the population becomes depleted it would also take
a long time to recover and reach a
healthy level.
Around 70 million sharks are
caught each year in fishing nets and
as bycatch (the unintentional catch
of a non-target species). The main
concern with overfishing is the catch
of small or young individuals. These
have not yet reached maturity or had
the opportunity to reproduce, thereby impacting the future population.
Sharks are caught for their meat,
cartilaginous skeleton and their fins.
The main uses include consumption
and medicinal purposes. Fortunately
the finning industry which sees the
capture of a shark, removal of their
fins and discard of the rest, is in de-
cline as the demand for shark fin
produce reduces and awareness
of this practice increases.
As coastlines develop and climate change takes affect the
marine environment is altered.
Mangroves and reefs used as
nursery ground for shark pups
(juvenile sharks) and feeding
grounds are negatively impact-
ed, leaving little habitat for the
sharks.
Sharks are apex predators in the
ocean, they are at the top of the
food chain. If an apex predator
is removed or the population reduced, life becomes unbalanced.
Consequences include the alteration of habitats, individual species
populations and food chains.

Walkman – the first personal
stereo cassette player ever –
went on sale. It would change
the world of on-the-go music
forever.
It was brought to the market
thanks to Sony’s legendary chairman, Masaru Ibuka, who was an
avid music lover. Ibuka traveled
frequently and was in the habit
of carrying one of the company’s
“portable” recorders, the Sony
TC-D5, but it was a heavy and
bulky device. So he asked his
engineers to work on something
much smaller.
After a breakneck development speed of 4 months, they
created the Walkman. The first
design had large, earmuff-like
headphones and custom-made
batteries (which, of course, ran
out on Ibuka midway through
his flight). However, it impressed
everyone who gave it a listen. It
went on sale for ¥30,000 in Japan and soon took off, becoming
one of Sony’s greatest success stories.
On this day in 1903, the first
Tour de France cycling race took
place. It ran for 19 days in six
stages over approximately 2414
kilometres and was won by Maurice Garin.
The race was invented to boost
the circulation of newspaper
L’Auto, after its circulation started
to plummet from competition
with the long-standing Le Vélo. To
keep their circulation of 20,000
fans content, they decided to hold
a race.
With an entry fee of 10 francs, it
attracted over 79 cyclists, of whom
60 actually started the race. The
1903 Tour de France was run in 6
stages, which were extraordinarily
long compared to modern stages,
with an average distance of over
400km.
Garin won the competition by a
margin of 2 hours 59 minutes and
31 seconds – the greatest margin of
victory in the Tour de France to this

Chris Squire, the bass guitarist
and co-founder of 1970s British
progressive rock band Yes, has
died at the age of 67, his bandmates have said.
Current Yes keyboardist Geoffrey Downes tweeted: “Utterly
devastated beyond words to
have to report the sad news of
the passing of my dear friend,
bandmate and inspiration Chris
Squire.”
Squire revealed in May he was
suffering from a rare form of
leukaemia.
The band said he died “peacefully” in Phoenix, Arizona, on
Saturday night. “It’s with the
heaviest of hearts and unbearable sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our

Chris Squire,” said a statement

quirks and interactions. Paul,
head chef of the eatery, is the star
of the show. The series received
a warm reception from the start.
Its third season debuts during
the summer of 2015.

Wahlberg married Rhea Durham in 2009. The couple had
three children, daughter Ella
and sons Michael and Brendan,
before tying the knot. In 2010,

The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) invited media to have a firsthand look at the upcoming international video
competition at their Stall, at the National Show, last weekend. The official launching of the video competition will take
place on Wednesday 29 July.

“We have decided to pay back
tourists for their dedicated travel
to the Seychelles by organizing
a video competition that will
see the winner enjoy a five-star
treatment in the country. This
is an amazing opportunity for
the lucky winners to return to
the islands as VIPs, travelling in
luxury and experiencing the very
best that Seychelles has to offer,”
said Sherin Naiken, the Chief Executive Officer of STB during the
media conference at the National
Show.
She added: “The video competition will commence on July 29,
2015 until January 2016. The
competition will involve participants registering their personal
details via a dedicated website
and, once the competition commences, uploading a personal
video of their holiday experience
in Seychelles of maximum two
minutes duration.”
It was noted that the competition is part of this year’s national
theme ‘I Love Seychelles’ that
boasts one of the richest prizes
ever offered by the Seychelles

the competition. Maven is also
behind the creation of the competition’s brand as well as many
of the collateral materials connected with its promotion internationally.”
At the National Show, the tour-
ism board launched the competition and the website. “The competition and the website will be
officially announced on Wednesday 29 July,” concluded Mrs.
