At Glaucoma Research Foundation, our mission is to prevent vision loss from glaucoma by investing in innovative research, education, and support with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. Our Foundation was founded in 1978 in San Francisco by three visionary glaucoma specialists who wanted to encourage innovative research to find better ways to care for people with glaucoma — the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness. Since then we have funded successful collaborative research programs, leading the way in glaucoma research until a cure is found. Nickells, PhD Truhlsen Eye Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE Moran Eye Institute, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Medical College of Georgia, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, GA University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI Knowledge gained from this study will help guide therapy for elevated IOP associated with use of anti-VEGF drugs. This project identified new therapeutic targets for glaucoma, and developed and tested new neuroprotection treatments. This research project comprehensively characterized the exosome particles in aqueous humor, which may lead to a biomarker and therapeutic targets for glaucoma. Results of this study will impact therapeutic applications of drugs designed to limit activation of the innate immune response by providing cell-specific targeting of these drugs. Stuart J. McKinnon, MD, PhD Colm O’Brien, MD, FRCS Joshua D. Stein, MD, MS Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI A project to determine whether therapies can be designed to modulate the immune system to prevent vision loss and blindness in glaucoma patients. This study showed a unique molecular link between specific events and cells in the trabecular meshwork that may be a target for further investigation and drug discovery. The researchers developed a sophisticated tool that can help eye doctors predict whether a patient’s glaucoma will remain stable or get worse over time. With Catalyst for a Cure (CFC), Glaucoma Research Foundation has taken an unprecedented approach by intentionally seeking experts from both inside and outside the mainstream of glaucoma research to ensure a fresh perspective. We have a history of success with multi-year, collaborative research projects that have helped shape the direction of glaucoma research and improved patient care. Glaucoma Research Foundation’s Scientific Advisors asked the CFC team to focus on research that takes maximum advantage of their combined, diverse skills. As a result of this innovative approach, the CFC research collaborations have made significant discoveries that have changed our understanding of glaucoma and inspired other scientists around the world. 7 4% Foundations 6% Conferences 1% Corporations 3% Administration 12% Development 7% Investments 24% Education Revenue 82% Individuals 61% Research Expenses 2015 FINANCIAL REPORT financial responsibility and transparency. Total revenue for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2015 was $4 million. Through generous support from our donors, $3.3 million was committed to innovative glaucoma research and education programs. Glaucoma Research Foundation continues to have a strong balance sheet, finishing the year with a small surplus. Since 1978, we have invested more than $50 million to advance essential research and education. We receive no government funding and rely primarily on private philanthropy. Careful stewardship ensures that 85 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to research and education programs. Independent nonprofit evaluators Charity Navigator and GuideStar give us high ratings for transparency and accountability. Our audited financial reports are available on our website and we meet all twenty of the Better Business Bureau’s Standards for Charity Accountability. Thank you for your personally significant contributions and your ongoing advocacy to help speed the cure. Frederick H. The team is working collaboratively to develop innovative tools that will enable eye doctors to detect glaucoma at its earliest stages and indicate which patients are most at risk for vision loss. This year the CFC team identified eight possible new biomarkers for glaucoma. With the team’s expertise in neurobiology and optical engineering, they are designing and building specialized equipment to provide imaging of the earliest changes in the eye that may indicate glaucoma. This important work promises to transform glaucoma care and preserve vision for countless patients worldwide.
