Live - In this sector the Finmeccanica Group is able to provide programmes devoted to
training pilots for combat manoeuvrings. The related solutions are based on airborne
pod for weapon simulations and communications for fighter aircraft and a on ground
PC-based display and debriefing system that provides live monitoring and a complete
debrief of air combat training missions.
Virtual - The Finmeccanica Group offers a wide range of capability in the “Virtual”
training sector. The Group provides generic and type-specific simulators that
spearhead training for pilot and support crews of both fixed-wing rotary aircraft. Our
solutions address a comprehensive set of operational and maintenance issues and
range from desk-top Procedural Trainers to Full Flight Mission Simulators.
The Group also offers virtual training solutions for unmanned systems as well as a
virtual shooting range for small arms training to law enforcement personnel.
Mission simulators are another field where Finmeccanica Companies are playing a
leading role. In addition to the individual operator training supported by the above
mentioned simulators, our mission simulators provide Command & Control Training
for command teams, both for the Army and Navy, maritime vessel and air traffic
simulators, as well as railway traffic management training in the civil field.

Constructive - Offering solutions for Concept, Development & Experimentation (CD&E),

AgustaWestland’s Adaptive Radar Trainer & Exportable Module for Integrated Systems (ARTEMIS)
provides a cost-effective, flexible and effective simulated training environment for on board
tactical radar operators, with a particular emphasis on Search & Rescue (SAR) operations. In a
virtual environment, students acquire familiarization and practice with the helicopter’s radar in
SAR operations and/or tactical missions. They also develop a comprehensive understanding
of the operational capabilities of the radar represented by ARTEMIS, while directly reducing the
number of aircraft flying hours required and increases the effectiveness and safety of training.
It allows training of radar operators in simulated adverse meteorological conditions without
the hazards associated with live flying. Artemis allows both helicopter inter-crew cooperation
training and training of missions with multiple helicopters cooperating in the same scenario,
and can simulate radar malfunctions, allowing trainees to find workarounds and develop their
skills to decode the information displayed on the radar screen.

The CBT system combines advanced visual aids with interactive learning media to deliver
individual student training. Most systems have individual desktop Personal Computer based
workstations with one large, or two display screens. A networked classroom may be created
by linking a set of workstations via a server to an instructor’s console. Courseware is designed
for student self-paced learning in an interactive multimedia environment (incorporating
high-resolution 2D or 3D computer graphics, real-life still or moving images to complement the
graphics, synthetic audio to explain graphical content) and may include personalized instructor

There are many forms of learning provision using electronic or computer based technology to
deliver training to the learner. One such strategy, commonly known as Distance Learning (DL),
provides the learner with access to their learning content wherever and whenever they want it
using, either PC’s or tablets accessing learning via a Learning Portal over the World Wide Web.

The AgustaWestland FirstFlight Desktop version (FirstFlight-DT) is a state of-the-art
reconfigurable and portable cockpit trainer. The device employs advanced graphical visualization
techniques to simulate the helicopter cockpit in a virtual environment, where cockpit controls,
equipment, systems and components are faithfully reproduced using interactive graphics. The
FirstFlight-DT, other than allowing to focus the student on specific training aspects, by means
of the scenario driven training approach, provides also free-play simulation for system and
subsystem specific familiarization and operation, including normal and emergency conditions
and procedures. This includes operating the Display Unit (DU), Flight Management System
(FMS), radios, as well as familiarization with display symbology. Other training capabilities

flight dynamics, avionics and aircraft software modeling. The FTD is a fix based device with an
open visual system providing very effective training for pilots in the type rating, recurrent and
operational training. This device therefore allows to gain credits for VFR and IFR Training and
for the majority of malfunctions and emergency scenarios.

The employment of Thermal Imaging Cameras and Forward Looking Infra-Red vision in civil and
military aviation is a part of the daily business. AgustaWestland offers the AW FLIR Station
that allows FLIR Operators to meet specific training objectives with the possibility to perform
mission scenarios involving different targets and simulating different weather conditions and
many others parameters without the hazards/risks and costs associated with real aircraft
operations. It also allows practice and familiarization with the FLIR functionalities, especially
regarding the targets detection and tracking that are fundamental within standard FLIR
applications such as surveillance/patrolling, navigation, SAR, HEMS and police chase. The
AW FLIR Station can also simulate FLIR malfunctions, allowing trainees to find workarounds
and develop their skills to decode the information displayed on the FLIR screen. An accurate
replica of the FLIR controller (e.g. pendant) is provided to improve the realism and the
effectiveness of the training. It is also possible to configure the station in order to support

AgustaWestland Full Flight Simulators (FFS) and Full Mission Simulators (FMS) are devices
capable to fully train aircrews in normal, operational/mission and emergencies conditions.
The FFS is designed in order to meet both civil and military regulation standards. As civil
Authority standards, both FAA and EASA CS-FSTD(H) Level D qualifications have been achieved.
The design provides high-fidelity the helicopter flight dynamics and handling qualities, other
than the complete cockpit instruments and avionics simulation. High performance visual and
motion cues provide the aircrew with highly realistic and effective training, reproducing the
real flight environment in all weather, light, terrain and operational. The use of high level FFS/
FMS, in the modern training programs, allows the significant reduction of live flight training
(using the aircraft), with consequent reduction of hazards/risks and associated costs. The
FMS provides also the simulation of a/c armament and mission systems in a dynamic tactical
environment to fulfil the most demanding military requirements. FFS/FMS are capable to

The Modular Interactive Trainer for Helicopter Operators (MITHOs) is a powerful and cost-effective

Tablet or on a desktop. PT is a methodology for high performance self-training; this method
requires less workload from instructors and students which grants, as a final result, more
effective training. AW zero2hero, is useful in various fields, including Pilot cockpit familiarization
trainer, FOD prevention, marshalling, maintenance safety, etc. As a consequence, it improves
the level of safety, leveraging on the Behavior-Based Safety principles and on PT methodology.
The main target of PT is to make the trainee able to do the right thing without hesitating,
even under pressure. PT is a method of helping pilots and technicians to develop fluency
and confidence in the performance of academic skills. Precision teaching involves many
factors; being aware of the relationship between teaching and learning, measuring student
performance regularly and frequently, analyzing the measurements to develop instructional
and motivational strategies.
