BRONZE Quarktek Group Inc. Hendriks HOUS E 1. H OU SE Glen Willow 1828 YORK RD., QUEENSTON Situated in the Niagara Escarpment between the villages of Queenston and St. Davids, this home was designed, in the style of a traditional country family home, by the owner and built by local tradesmen in 1999. You will enter the estate along a mature tree lined u-shaped driveway. The generous front veranda was a popular gathering place during the home’s B&B days. From the veranda, double doors reveal the vaulted foyer brightened by a skylight above the oak centre-stair plan. The sunken living room with oak flooring, piano and fireplace makes the living room an inviting retreat. The two-pattern rustic porcelain floor throughout the foyer and kitchen compliments and brings together all the elements of the oak, stainless steel appliances, cabinets and strikingly dark granite counters. A covered kitchen deck overlooks the fruit trees and gardens. Plentiful windows and balconies offer ever-changing views of orchards, vineyards, Brock’s Monument, and the escarpment across the river in New York State. Decorated by GARDEN CLUB OF NIAGARA, NOTL Presented by TRAVIS CAIRNS, STATE FARM INSURANCE 2. ‘Wingspread’ 793 GREEN ST., NOTL Traditional inspiration, modern convenience and aesthetic pleasures are the hallmark of this unique home. Based on an earlier Irish Georgian cottage, architect Michael B. Allan designed this private residence in 2000. The current homeowners purchased it in 2014 and completely refreshed the interior and gardens. Custom cabinetry was installed throughout, including totally remodeled bathrooms, laundry room and hallway storage. The bespoke kitchen, featuring quarter sawn oak cabinets with light cream uppers and granite counters, was installed in 2015. The quiet colour scheme creates a harmonious flow and establishes a complimentary backdrop for the owners’ large collection of contemporary art and antiques. Six fireplaces add warmth and charm to this elegant home. A long flagstone hallway connects the main home to the garage and upper guest quarters overlooking historic Rye Heritage Park. Outdoor patios and gracious English gardens provide additional space for entertainment. Charlou 164 JOHNSON ST., NOTL This home was built as the Sexton’s cottage in the 1860s on land being apportioned from St Mark’s churchyard. The cottage had Georgian pretentions with the staircase originally off the front hall. Other renovations have changed this into a more livable design for a retired couple. The 5-bedroom house has been turned into a 3-bedroom by incorporating two rooms into one entertainment room on the upper level. All bathrooms and the kitchen/laundry room have been refurbished. The house comprises a mélange of styles. The pine plank floors are original and much of the original 1860 woodwork is in place. A 1750 case clock sets off the tin ceiling in the foyer. The living room is in traditional English style with draperies from Liberty of London. A mini library constructed in 2013 is built around a coal-burning fireplace imported from Lancashire, England. Several furniture pieces are antiques from Hampshire, England made by the owner’s great grandfather. In 1845, Alexander Davidson, first mayor and postmaster of Niagara-on-the-Lake, built the original home. The design was influenced by Greek Revival style with large principal rooms, two working fireplaces, three bedrooms, 9'4" ceilings, 1" pine floors, extensive moldings and a handsome design staircase to the second level. A well-known local family purchased the home in 1906 and lived here for over 70 years. Since 1981, three different owners added a family room, master bedroom suite, pool, double garage with guest suite above, and large glassed-in porch. The dining room was originally the living room and the kitchen was once part of the current living room. The front door and surround (including the glass) are original, as well as the upside-down lock. The current home is a mix of old and new, with traditional and antique furniture, decorated in light, bright colours, creating warm and welcoming spaces. H OU SE The Denyer Residence 20 WILBERFORCE AVE., NOTL 6. The Hawley House 42 GARRISON VILLAGE DR., NOTL Built in 1997, and inspired by the architecture of the surrounding historic Chautauqua cottages, the design of this house echoes the Queen Anne style popular during the late 1800s. Upon entering the home from the front porch, where rocking chairs afford views of Lake Ontario, there is a large kitchen/keeping room with a fireplace, small dining room, powder room, and a music room with a baby grand piano and harp. A two-storey addition, featuring cathedral ceilings, Juliet balcony, heated stone floors, and double doors leading to the spacious back deck, patio and garden, was completed in 2006 and offers a large formal dining area, fireplace, and comfortable seating area for conversation. Upstairs are three bedrooms, each with walk-in closets, full bathrooms, and a variety of architectural features, including a turret with a soaring 20' ceiling and a balcony off the master bedroom which provides a birds-eye view of the surrounding streetscape. A perfect holiday home for entertaining! The building shape, blue siding and clerestory windows give only a hint of the fact that this is a century-old barn converted to a fantastic house in 2001. Majestic hand-hewn beams and posts, and a 25' vaulted ceiling greet you when you open the huge solid oak antique front door, salvaged from a church in Vermont. The matching side entrance door “found” the owners months later in an architectural salvage yard in Buffalo. Not wanting to change the interior spaces that the barn offered, the master bedroom is in the hayloft and there are three bedrooms, an office and a recreation room on the lower level. A host of animals in the form of art now call this barn their home. One of the ‘aha’ moments in the design came when the clerestory of windows perfectly fit between the posts. Notice also the intentional repeated rhythm of the pane sizes in the windows. The interior shape of the principal room offers a wonderful space and acoustics for gatherings and concerts. ANNUAL SITE McFarland House 15927 NIAGARA PARKWAY This historic Georgian manor home was built by John McFarland and his sons. Descendants of the McFarlands lived in the house for over 140 years before it was restored by The Niagara Parks Commission and opened to the public in 1959. During the War of 1812, both British and American forces used the home as a hospital, and in December 1813, the British attack on Fort Niagara was launched from the ravine on the property. McFarland House is one of the only structures to survive the burning of the town when occupying American forces retreated from the area, making it one of the oldest properties in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Today, McFarland House portrays early nineteenth century life in Upper Canada. www.mcfarlandhouse.com Decorated by THE GARDEN CLUB OF NIAGARA in the style of an historic Christmas. 9 .
