Below is an excellent excerpt from a mediation by Katie Gross that was published February 23. Mt 25:31-46 ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ When I read this reading, I had nothing to say that hasn’t already been said a million times. However, I do know a woman who is a professional at these kind of things—Mother Teresa. From volunteer experience with the Missionaries of Charity, I can say that Mother Teresa is the most powerful woman I have ever heard of. She was powerful not in the worldly sense—in fact, she was as poor as could be—but in the spiritual sense, this woman was obviously a saint. Mother Teresa lived her whole life around this Gospel reading. I really encourage you to watch her Nobel Prize speech. It is eighteen minutes long (she has a lot to talk about), but you could add it into your nightly prayer. To hear the voice of a modern-day saint is worth the time. It makes the Gospel come alive. http://www.nobelpriz e.org/medi aplayer/ind ex.php?id=1852. Here are some of my favorite quotes from her speech, all of which embody today’s Gospel: “[Jesus] makes Himself that hungry one, that naked one, that homeless one—and not only hungry for a piece of bread, but hungry for love. Not only naked for a piece of cloth, but naked of human dignity. Not only homeless for a room to live, but homeless for have being forgotten, unloved, uncared for—being nobody to nobody. Having forgotten what is human love, what is human touch, what it is to be loved by somebody. And he says: ‘Whatever you did to the least of these my brethren, you did unto me.’ It is so beautiful for us to become holy through this love.” “We must tell the poor… that they are somebody to us… they too have been created by the same loving hand of God, to love and to be loved. Our poor people are great people—are very loveable people. They don’t need our pity and sympathy. They need our loving understanding. They need our respect.” “The greatest destroyer of peace today is the cry of the innocent unborn child. For if a mother can kill her own child in her own womb, what is it for you and me to kill each other? In the Scripture it is written: ‘Even if a mother could forget her child, I could not forget you. I have carved you in the palm of my hand.’” “A love, to be true, has to hurt. I never forget a little child who taught me a very beautiful lesson. They heard in Calcutta—the children—that Mother Teresa has no sugar for her children. And this little one—Hindu boy, four years old—he went home and he told his parents, ‘I will not eat sugar for three days. I will give my sugar to Mother Teresa’… He loved with great love. He loved until it hurt. And this is what I ask of you: to love one another until it hurts.” “One evening, a gentleman came to our house and said, ‘There is a Hindu family with eight children. They have not eaten in a long time. Do something for them.’ And I took rice and I went immediately, and there was this mother. And those little ones’ faces—shining eyes from sheer hunger. She took the rice from my hands, she divided it into two, and she went out. When she came back, I asked her, ‘Where did you go?’ ‘What did you do?’ And the answer she gave me? ‘They are hungry also.’ She knew that the next door neighbor, a Muslim family, was hungry. What surprised me most wasn’t that she gave the rice, but that in her suffering, in her hunger, she knew that somebody else was hungry, and she had the courage—she had the love to share. And this is what I want you to do: to love the poor. And never turn your back on the poor, for when you do, you turn it to Christ. For He has made himself the hungry one, the naked one, and the homeless one, so that you and I have the opportunity to love Him.” “Where is God? How can we love God? It’s not enough to say, ‘My God, I love you,’ but ‘My God, I love you here. ’I can enjoy this, but I give it. I can eat that sugar, but I give that sugar. You would be surprised at the things people do to share the joy of giving.” Remember the first principal of the Knights of Columbus is charity and as Jesus said, “as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” During this Lenten season, we should all consider what we can do for the less fortunate. Blessed Mother Teresa, pray for us! Vivat Jesus! Harry Editor’s Note: A link to Fr. Today is February 28 and the weather included sub-freezing temperatures and freezing rain! Sharon and I are both struggling with multi-week colds and thought we should be a little more cautious. I think the Lord will understand. It was amazing to see the number of cars in the parking lot at the SW abortion center! There were not many cars on the road due to the ice and yet a number of people were willing to brave the elements to eliminate an “inconvenient” child. Pro-Life Tip of the Month – March 2015 How much money does Planned Parenthood receive from taxpayers? The Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its affiliates received $336,700,000 in taxpayer dollars during the 2006-2007 fiscal year, (based on the PPH Annual Report of 20062007). When we pray the Rosary outside of the abortion centers along Greenville Avenue *Sharing the Pro-Life Message” published by the Pro-Life Action League, we are frequently “greeted” by the cars that pass by. Most cars go by with no ProLifeAction.org reaction. There are some cars that go by that let us know “we are number one!” and then there are a few cars that give us a “thumbs up!” – we always appreciate these fans. Last week we traveled up to McKinney to support their 40 Days for Life campaign and found a LOT of support from the cars traveling along Hebron Parkway. We have never seen so many “thumbs up” and heard the short horn honks (which indicate approval). It is a long trip – but the feedback is worth the trip. We are getting ready for the Bishop’s 22 nd Annual Catholic Pro-Life Dinner to be held on April 18 at the Irving Convention Center. This year we will be entertained by Kathy Troccoli, an award winning singer and by Patrick Coffin, the Catholic Answers Live host, as the Master of Ceremonies. If you would like to attend this dinner with others from our Council – please let us know as soon as possible. The seats at our tables are going fast! We will be in the Fellowship Hall at our next breakfast selling tickets to the raffle associated with the Dinner. Please remember – If not you, who??? If not this, what??? If not now, when??? MARK YOUR CALENDARS! • Every Saturday after the 9 A.M. Mass, we pray the Rosary at one of four Dallas abortion clinics. We do this rain or shine, hot or cold, even when it is snowing. • The 22 nd Annual Bishops Annual Pro-Life Dinner, April 18, 2015 at the Irving For additional information about this event, contact Frank McElligott at [email protected]. We did feed everybody but we also ran out of a number of items so the selection for the late mass was a bit thin. We used two of our old favorite casseroles, a variety of pancake flavors and the usual assortment of accompaniments for the meal. Fellowship Hall was packed and we had to set up more tables. The Epic Jazz Band did a great job of entertaining the large crowds and even threw in some new arrangements and introduced a new vocalist. Stan Tax gets the eggs scrambled after the 9:15 Mass. After a brief hiatus, Bob Pitts (left) returns to the griddle while Doyle Kitchen (right) continues “praying with Betsy” and handles some of the cleanup tasks. Satisfied patron enjoys breakfast plate. Serving that many parishioners is a lot of work and let it be known that we have a great team of Knights and Ladies who are willing to put in that effort, many doing it month after month. Jim and Shirley Sammons, Jack Ayers, Harry Storey, Kevin Finch, Stan Schwieterman and Fred Kellner completed the prep work on Friday afternoon. On Sunday, The Epic Jazz Band featuring dual trombones , entertains following the 9:15 Mass. we had assistance from Stan Tax, Fred Kellner, Bob Pitts, Jack Falloure, Stan Schwieterman, Martins Esubi, Bill Fox, Bob Weaver, Jim Fogg, Rex Phillips, Jason Rasins and Doyle Kitchen. Jeff Stuart, Pat Heaney, Don Shaver, Roger Klotz and Javier Sauceda all pulled double duty working Coffee and Donuts and helping with pancakes. We thank you all for your time, service and fellowship! At the conclusion of last month’s article it was mentioned “…many new Knights were exemplified”… and it was our… “hope to see most of you there for the fun and fellowship.” Well, we did have a few, including some transfers, but we would like to see more. We had more exemplifications this month so as a reminder… on Sunday, March 15, cooking starts at 7 AM, and continues throughout the morning; with clean up from noon until around 2 PM. We hope to see you there. Squires also attended the Catholic night Maverick’s game on last weekend in February (see page 11 for related story). Squires recruitment fliers are being sent out to All Saints RE classes and as an added attachment in ASCS Saintly Notes. Please encourage 10 to 18 year old All Saints boys to join the Squires. We have one monthly meeting and plan one fun or service event for the month. The Squires Circle activities encourage boys to have fun among peers and build confidence and social skills. Service activities promote volunteerism, programs, and events that help the community and those less fortunate. Spiritual activities help boys grow in their Catholic faith and develop Christian character. -article submitted by Stan Schwieterman; stock graphic Community COUNCIL MEMBERS PREPARE FISHER HOUSE LUNCHEON The Fisher House provides a free place for Veterans and their families to stay while receiving treatment at the VA hospital. Only three donors were deferred and there were six first-time donors, which is fantastic. The 35 units of blood collected at the drive will ultimately save the lives of up to 105 patients in local hospitals. The most important event is happening at Prince of Peace at 8:00AM on March 28. All of our first degree members have the opportunity to receive their Second and Third Degrees on this date. I will attempt to contact all members, some thirty plus of our council who have not advanced to the higher degrees to encourage them to attend this impressive set of ceremonies. Therefore, it is important that those who have already attained full Knighthood also make plans to attend the ceremony to support our brother knights. Additionally, if you have signed a form 100 as a sponsor of a knight who has not advanced to their major degrees please contact your sponsored knight(s) and encourage them to attend the ceremony. We will have our last membership drive for the fraternal year and have slated the weekend of March 14 and March 15 for this event. We need as many knights as possible to help with this event. It is a very easy thing to do and very important for our council. So if you have about 15 minutes that you can assist with the drive please contact me at 972-467-4753 or [email protected]. In ceremonies held on February 14 two new members joined our Order. From left, Adam Carr was on hand to welcome Octavi o Murcio while Ed Schwieterman received the emblem of the Order from his dad, Stan Schwieterman. On February 25 Membership Director Kevin Finch (back left) and Grand Knight Harry Storey (back right) welcomed Ramus Paron (front left) and Patrick Brady (front right) into the Order. This past month has been another exciting month for our membership. Octavio Murcio, Ed Schwieterman, Ramus Paron, Patrick Brady and Jessie McLean joined our Order. We also welcomed in Matthew Baril a transfer from Reno, NV and the brother of former Lumen Christi Council member Tommy Baril. Anderson. “We are pleased to have had great success on both of these fronts, which comes from our continued commitment to our founding mission of serving our neighbor consistent with Catholic social teaching. Anderson explained that the recordbreaking results mean that the Order has “helped its members to protect their families while simultaneously enabling the Knights to support those most in need and the many works of the Catholic Church.” The Knights enjoys a stalwart reputation for financial security, has one of the lowest lapse rates in the industry and offers a product line of life insurance, annuities, disability income and longterm care policies designed to meet the needs of Catholic Families. In M arch 2014, the Knights of Columbus was named one of the world’s most ethical companies by the Ethisphere Institute. In June, the Order retained its spot on the Fortune 1000 list and earned a 39th consecutive A+ + (Superior) rating for financial strength from rating agency AM Best. Lent is upon us, which allows us to reflect on the Passion, Death and Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus. Now is a good time to review your insurance to be sure everything is in place. I provide free financial reviews as a fraternal benefit to all my Brothers. VIVAT JESUS! The Supreme Knight’s Corner During her fourth apparition in December 1531, Our Lady described Juan Diego as “ my youngest son” and told him not to fear. T hen she said, “ Am I not here, I who have the honor to be your Mother? Are you not in my shadow and under my protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more?” Mary brings our families closer to the Holy Family, which St. John Paul II described in his 1994 Letter to Families as “ the icon and model of every human family.” T oday, the challenges facing families seem to multiply faster than we can count. What better time, then, to turn again to Mary and the Holy Family to find that path by which each of our families may grow more fully alive? Vivat Jesus! 13 14 THE BEACON – The Official Newsletter of Lumen Christi Council 13520 March 2015 UPCOMING LUMEN CHRISTI CALENDAR OF EVENTS visit www.lumenchristikc.org and click EVENT CALENDAR to sign up for any of these events MARCH EVENT LOCATION TIME CONTACT 1 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Don Shaver 4 Wed Officer’s Meeting 6 Fri 6-7 KLC Room #5 7:00 PM Harry Storey (ASMC has Dinner) Church 7:00 PM Bob Weaver Fri-Sat Overnight Adoration Chapel 9:00 PM – 9:00 AM Casey Fuld 7 Sat Rosary for Life @ Routh Street Cancelled due to 7 Sat Diocesan Wide KC Corporate Communion Cathedral 10:00 AM Mass Bob Weaver 7 Sat Lunch at El Fenix after Mass 1601 McKinney 11:30 AM Chris Diaz 8 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall 7:45 and 9:15 Mass Jeff Stuart 14 Sat Rosary for Life@Planned Parenthood-McKinney 1720 W Eldorado Pkwy meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 14-15 Sat-Sun Membership Blitz Meadowcreek Campus After all masses Kevin FInch 15 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Mel Almagro 15 Sun Pancake Breakfast Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Stan Tax 16 Mon Community Meal with Ladies Auxiliary Fellowship Hall 6:30 PM John Meyer 16 Mon Monthly Business Meeting Fellowship Hall 7:30 PM Harry Storey 18 Wed Golden Saints Luncheon Service Fellowship Hall 11:30 AM Bob Wise 20 Fri Lenten Dinner (with Young Adult Ministry) Fellowship Hall 5:30-6:45 PM Larry Milliken 21 Sat Rosary for Life@Planned Parenthood-McKinney 1720 W Eldorado Pkwy meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 22 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Pat Heaney 22 Sun Blood Drive Fellowship Hall 8:30 AM – 1 PM Rob Hewitt 27 Fri Lenten Dinner (with MPDC - Disabilities) Fellowship Hall 5:30-6:45 PM Larry Milliken 28 Sat Rosary for Life@Planned Parenthood-McKinney 1720 W Eldorado Pkwy meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 29 Sun PALM SUNDAY NO COFFEE APRIL EVENT LOCATION TIME CONTACT 1 Wed Officer’s Meeting KLC Room #5 7:00 PM Harry Storey 2 Thr-Sat Easter Triduum – See parish website for Times of all events 3 Fri GOOD FRIDAY (No Overnight Adoration) 4 Sat Rosary for Life@Planned Parenthood-McKinney 1720 W Eldorado Pkwy meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 5 Sun EASTER SUNDAY NO COFFEE 11 Sat Rosary for Life@Planned Parenthood-Greenville 7424 Greenville Ave meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 12 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Mike Riley 15 Wed Golden Saints Luncheon Service Fellowship Hall 11:30 AM Bob Wise 18 Sat Rosary for Life @ SW Women’s Center 8616 Greenville meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 18 Sat 20th Annual Bishop's Pro-Life Dinner Irving Convention Center 19 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Don Shaver 20 Mon Community Meal with Ladies Auxiliary Fellowship Hall 6:30 PM John Meyer 20 Mon Monthly Business Meeting Fellowship Hall 7:30 PM Harry Storey 25 Sat Cinco de Mayo Tamale Sale Old Bank Parking Lot 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM TBA 25 Sat Rosary for Life@Planned Parenthood-So Dallas 7989 West Virginia Drive meet 9:30 AM* Jim DeSmet 25-26 Sat-Sun Cinco de Mayo Tamale Sale Courtyard Sat Eve & AM Masses TBA 26 Sun Sunday Morning Fellowship Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Jeff Stuart 26 Sun Pancake Breakfast Fellowship Hall Morning Masses Stan Tax Marian Stations of the Cross * Meet 9:30 at Church or 9:45 at Center (Note changes for Lent and replacement for Robinson’s) Corp Communion Jim DeSmet AND DONUTS AND DONUTS Jim DeSmet - Contact information for each Officer and Director is on page 3
