I
Small businesses play a vital role in
Valparaiso’s booming economy
t had been Jeff Walter’s lifelong ambition to run his
own floral business.
For eight years, Bob and Ruth Lemster gave him the
insights needed to realize his dream. Working for the
two at Lemster’s Floral & Gift, 108 Franklin St., which
had served the community for decades, he cultivated
not only the vision to recognize the shifts and changes
in customer styles and tastes, but came to appreciate
the long hours and unflinching commitment required
of small-business owners.
What is the definition of a small business? The Small
Business Administration (SBA) sets specific standards by
industry, but in general, they are firms with fewer than 500
employees for manufacturing businesses and fewer than
$7 million in annual receipts for most non-manufacturing
businesses.
The latest statistics point to small businesses as the
backbone of any community. Consider the following:
A 2008 SBA survey states small businesses “create most
of the nation’s new jobs, employ about half of the nation’s
private sector workforce and provide half of the nation’s
non-farm, private real gross domestic product ...”
In Porter County, the Indiana Department of Labor indicates
small businesses, those with one to nine employees,
represent just over 73 percent of the overall workforce.
In Valparaiso, of the nearly 700 members of the Valpo
Chamber, more than 95 percent are small businesses
according to SBA standards and 93 percent have 50 or
fewer employees.

community is that it boasts a high per-capita income, which
lends itself well to small businesses.

Key players
“Small businesses tend to be in personal-service
businesses ... and there is the added aspect of being able
to market your small, family-owned business to members
of the community, as well as business owners,” he says.
On Oct. 1, 1990, Jeff and his wife,
Christine, officially took over the
business. Through the years, they’ve
experienced “peaks” and “valleys,” as
they call it. Today, they remain a vital
member of the business community.
That they continue to flourish, in part,
is a tribute to Valparaiso.
In being named 2009 “Community of the Year” by the
Indiana Chamber, Valparaiso was celebrated not only for
creating new business centers, but also for recognizing and
strengthening its core business base.

Lincolnway, a men’s and women’s clothing store that
officially opened in November 2008, the explanation as to
why small businesses succeed is simple.
“Small businesses offer great customer service and a
personal atmosphere which you don’t find as much,” she
says. “We pride ourselves in great customer service and
knowing each customer on a personal level.”
That philosophy, without question, is appreciated by the
customers.
In fact, it’s made Valparaiso resident Lisa Toleikis Miller
prefer to stay within her own community, rather than head
elsewhere to dine or shop. Such options, she admits,
weren’t as abundant back when she was a Valparaiso
University student.
“Now, we have so
many options.”

Such concerns were certainly true of one of Valparaiso’s newest
additions, Blackbird Café, 114 E. Lincolnway, which opened Feb.
1, 2009. With Daniel Cook serving as manager/owner and Mary
Koselke as owner, the establishment, which focuses on making
food from scratch, serves everything from gourmet drinks, baked
foods and pastries to paninis, sandwiches, salads, and soups.
Would Valparaiso be supportive, Cook wondered?
Absolutely.
“People in Valparaiso are willing to try new things and
are exceptionally supportive of local small businesses,”
Cook says.
What’s also thrilling for business owners is the sense of freedom,
of being the one to make the decisions – big and small. In fact, a
SBA survey found that 38 percent of small-business owners who
left positions at other companies did so because they wanted to
be their own bosses.
That’s true of Gary Taylor, who purchased Ken’s Carpet and
Upholstery Cleaning in 1986, a company that started in 1974.
Incorporated under KENPRO Cleaning Services in 1996, Taylor
offers residential and commercial carpet cleaning, upholstery and
air duct cleaning, and commercial janitorial services.
“Purchasing the business and deciding to be in business for
myself gave me the feeling of independence,” Taylor says.
Relishing that sense of control as well is Tony Micciche, co-owner
of EmbroidMe, 2307 LaPorte Ave., Suite 2, which specializes in
custom embroidery, screen printing and promotional items for
businesses and individuals.
“We like the fact that we are able to have better control of our
futures without having to depend on others to make the correct
decisions ...,” he says.
Taylor, in fact, takes his philosophy of owning a small business
one step further. For him, there must be no fear.
“If you are fearful of challenge,” he continues, “then maybe you
should rethink owning a business. By having owned this business
for the past 25 years, most challenges are dealt with by examining
past experiences and tailoring the solutions from the past
challenges to the current challenges.”
It helps, too, to have a supportive work environment. Consider
Medical Connections, 831 Lincolnway, which recruits physicians
and allied health-care professionals for promotional and continuing
medical education programs sponsored by pharmaceutical
companies. Medical Connections President Elizabeth Stanley
says she’s lucky to have a core group of employees who have
been with the company for quite some time.
“We’ve learned how to leverage our strengths and weaknesses,”
she says. “We’ve learned to accept challenges head-on. We
strongly rely on our past experiences to help us avoid pitfalls
and obstacles.”
No Place Like Valparaiso
For some, Valparaiso is a destination point, a community where
small business owners can bloom.
Take, for instance, Horses Landscape & Garden Centre, 198 W.
Indiana 130. The company opened in Crown Point in 1983 and
moved to Lansing, Ill., in 1986 before selecting Valparaiso as its
home in 1990 so the business owners could spend more time
with family.
“We wanted a great community to live in, and we chose
Valparaiso,” says Erica Stiscak, who owns the company with her
husband, George.
The key to succeeding, Erica continues, has been learning to
adapt and adjust quickly. It helps, she says, to have a strong base
in family and community.
“When you do things right, it seems to always work out,” she
says. “We believe in karma and honesty, along with hard work to
get you through life’s hurdles. >>

Admiring those qualities as well are Robert and Michael Moreth
who, like the Stiscaks, opened their business, Simko Signs LLC, in
the Crown Point area. Much of their work, they says, was done in
a garage at home.
says Diane Price, who has owned Mr. CopyRite since 2002, but
began working there in 1993.
Mike Zurn, owner of Colonial Cleaners, moved his business
from Lowell to Valparaiso in 1989, primarily because it is near the
hospital, university, and courthouse.
“After more than 20 years here, I’m convinced I made the right
choice,” he says.
By contrast is the story behind Anthony Gallinatti, director of
operations for American Limousine. He started the business in his
home in 1987, providing transportation to Chicago and northern
Indiana airports, as well as to special events. He began with one
vehicle before expanding to five vehicles. The office eventually
moved to a Cascade Street site. It later changed from drivers to
independent contractors owning their own vehicles.
Now, Gallinatti is back at home operating his business. He believes
where Valparaiso is situated helped American Limousine succeed.
“Besides being centrally located in the northern part of the state,”
he says, “Valparaiso provides a strong business and private sector
to launch our services to other communities.”

the Moreths says, “which are
vital to our business.”
Indeed, proximity to crucial business opportunities has been
essential for businesses like Mr. CopyRite, 308 E. Lincolnway, and
Colonial Cleaners, 1761 Morthland Drive.
Mr. CopyRite, which this year celebrates 36 years in operation,
does everything from printing business cards, envelopes,
and letterheads to producing fliers, menus, and special-event
announcements.
It helps, too, to have Valparaiso University in the community, where
students and staff always need copies of just about anything.
“Having the university in our town definitely keeps us thriving,”

Families often represent the lifeblood of any business. That’s
true of Sandberg’s Service Center, 1252 W. Lincolnway. The
company, which opened in 1973 and offers automotive and truck
repair and towing, has been, and will continue to be, part of the
Sandberg family.
“We feel it has a solid reputation,” Manager Chris Sandberg says,
“and it’s nice to keep the family name in the community.”
Working with family, and people he respects, make any fears or
challenges the company faces bearable.
“My fears are always calmed by relying on the people around me,”

he reality of today’s economy is that,
regardless of size, businesses struggle
with the same issues. No company is
immune to the plethora of challenges, from
matters of financing, planning, and staffing
to not only reaching new customers, but
keeping them.
So, how do they survive in a particularly
competitive climate?
That’s a tricky question, according to
LeAnn McCrum, Northwest Indiana
Small Business Development Center
interim regional director.
“The big questions for everyone,” she
says, “seem to be, ‘How can I make my
organization more efficient?’ ‘How can I
grow in this economy?’ How can I secure
the financial position of my company?’
‘What is the best way to plan for the future
of my company in uncertain times?’”
The comforting news is, resources exist
within the area that give companies,
particularly small business, the tools and
guidance to realize their vision.
It helps, too, McCrum says, for any small
business to call Valparaiso home.
“Valparaiso is a perfect community
for business to thrive,” she says. “It’s
committed to diversifying the economy
– supporting emerging industries that will
create high paying jobs for the future.
“Valparaiso as a city does not leave
things to chance. Growth is intentional
and planned.”
Resources exist for small
businesses to grow and thrive

The Northwest Indiana Small Business
Development Center, based in Crown
Point, provides free assistance to people
starting or expanding their businesses,
offering consultations, workshops, training
opportunities and other services.
“It is very important to have your goals
and objectives in mind before you start.
Know your market and be aware of the
costs required in running a business. Be
prepared to adjust your plan when you
discover something is not working for you.”
Another such group is SCORE, which
stands for Senior Core of Retired
Executives. Comprised of volunteers
– most of them retired with various
backgrounds and operating through
the Small Business Administration –
the group is organized into districts,
chapters and sub locations. Chapter 310
is based in Valparaiso and also has a
group in Hammond.
Self-awareness, in fact, is a quality Joe
Ubben views as essential for any company
looking to thrive or an individual hoping
to get hired.
Volunteers for SCORE, whose services
are free, meet Wednesday mornings at
the Valpo Chamber, their clients ranging
from people curious as to how to start
their business to established companies
considering changes or pursuing advice.
“We try to give clients ‘food for thought’
on the many issues that go into the
preparation of a business plan,” Chapter
310 Treasurer Marty Stritof says.
Ubben is the president of BreakAway
Performance Group LLC, 13 Lincolnway,
Suite 302. His firm works with for-profit and
non-profit organizations aiming to improve
how their frontline leaders and teams
perform. Ubben zeroes in on understanding
strengths and weaknesses so employees
become more confident.
“The fundamental skill needed by most
people is self-awareness,” Ubben says.
“Few individuals looking for work will find a
job that is a perfect match to their skill set
or experience.
“Consequently, job seekers need to have a
very realistic idea of who they are and what

Typically, Jean continues, within three to six
months after an increase in local temporary
staffing, companies begin adding workers
back to the full-time payroll.
Phelps says highly-skilled workers are
in demand.
“In fact,” she continues, “recent reports
show that 44 percent of resumes are from
unqualified candidates.
“So, in general, employers are looking for
skilled, qualified candidates whose skills
match their specific needs. Specifically, what
we’ve seen employers looking for right now
are candidates with math, reading, problem
solving and creativity skills.”
For Manpower, which has offices serving
Porter, LaPorte, Starke and Lake counties,
small businesses constitute 80 percent of
its current client base, according to Antonice
Thomas, Manpower of Northwest Indiana
and Chicago South branch manager.

Businesses, Thomas says, want prospective
employees with longevity and/or a consistent
work history.
“Businesses today understand that there
have been many layoffs, but a candidate
who has stayed in the workforce, even if it is
not their primary skill or field of work, shows
their dedication to being a part of today’s
workforce,” Thomas says.
Time
to network
Ask any small business owner in Valparaiso
what entity has played an essential role in
their vitality, and without fail, they cite the
Valpo Chamber.
That means a great deal to Rex Richards, the
chamber’s president.
“The real lifeblood of the chamber is to give
opportunities to our members that will help
them penetrate the Valparaiso business
market and showcase their products and/or
services,” he says.
More than 95 percent of the chamber’s

Richards says. Through the chamber,

and, in the process, have their products and
services reach their full potential.
Small businesses in particular, Richards
says, bring a wonderful energy to the
Valparaiso community.
“They are locally owned, and locally
owned businesses, as a rule, put their
profits back into the community,” he says.
“When someone has their own name
on the business, they take a great deal
of pride, and there is a special significance
in being proud of their business and

Valparaiso is hosting the 9th Annual Creekside Classic for Kids, on
Thursday, July 22. The Classic features a
morning skills competition for juniors age 12

and an afternoon golf tournament 12-hole
scramble with foursomes composed of two
adults and two juniors beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Classic includes cookout, prizes, awards,

Which is right for my business
ost people in this country are eligible
for employer based savings plans through
their jobs. This is how the bulk of retirement
savings is done. However, business owners
and self-employed individuals must, often
times, set up retirement savings plans for
themselves or their employees.
One type of retirement plan is the Simplified
Employee Pension (SEP IRA). This plan works
well for small businesses and self-employed
people. This plan allows the employer
to directly deposit a percentage of the
employees’ income into individual retirement
accounts (SEP-IRAs).
Features of a SEP IRA:
• Employees control their own accounts.
• The employer may contribute the lesser of
25 percent of each employee’s
compensation or $49,000.
• Employees who are age 21 or older earn
at least $550 in the year of eligibility, and
worked for the employer for three to five
preceding years are eligible for the plan.
The employer may choose to use less
restrictive eligibility requirements but not
more and union employees may be excluded.
Another common retirement account is the
Simple IRA. A Simple IRA is an employersponsored plan in which both the employer
and employees contribute to IRA’s. It is
designed especially for small businesses (with
less than 100 employees). The employer may
deduct all contributions they make to their
employees’ Simple IRAs on their company’s
tax return.
Features of a Simple IRA:
• Employees control their own accounts.
• Employees can contribute the lesser of
$11,500 or 100 percent of earned
income. There are also additional “catch up” contributions for individuals over age
50. Employee contributions are made on a
pre-tax basis.
• The employer must contribute either a 100
percent match of employee contributions
up to 3 percent of compensation or a
2 percent nonelective contribution on the
first $245,000 of compensation for each
eligible employee.
• Employees who earned at least $5,000
during any two previous years and will earn
$5,000 in the current year are eligible for

A third type of retirement plan is a 401k.
A 401k is popular retirement plan in which
employees can elect to have their employer
contribute a percentage of their compensation

small and large businesses.
Features of a 401k:
• Employees may elect to defer the lesser
of 100 percent of their pay or $16,500 for
2010. These deferrals are not included in
the employee’s taxable income, but are still
subject to Social Security tax. There are
also additional “catch up” contributions of
$5,500 for individuals over age 50.
• The employer may elect to match part or all
of the contributions.
• Employees who are at least 21 years old
and have been employed for one year
cannot be excluded from the plan.
A fourth type of retirement plan is a Profit
Sharing Plan. This plan allows an employer to
make discretionary contributions on an annual
basis, based on the company’s profitability.
These plans are often coupled with another
plan, like a 401k.
Features of a Profit Sharing Plan:
• Employer may make a discretionary
contribution the lesser of 100 percent of
pay or up to 25 percent of total eligible payroll.
• The total contribution on any one
employee’s account may not exceed $49,000.
• Employees who are at least 21 years
old are eligible. The time of employment
requirement cannot exceed one year or two
years if 100 percent vested. The plan may
exclude union employees.
Listed above are just some of the many
features of these retirement plans. Often
times, the easiest way to determine which
plan works for your business, is to sit down
with your financial professional and your
accountant. After listening to what you would
like to do for your employees, a plan can
be tailored specifically for your businesses’
needs, not only in the immediate future but for

Tom Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Buick
Mazda, was born and raised in Crown
Point, Indiana. He graduated from Saint
Norbert’s College in DePere, Wisconsin.
Tom has lived in Valparaiso since 1990.
He is very involved in the community.
He has served on the YMCA board,
The Boys and Girls Club Foundation,
United Way of Porter County board, the
Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, and
the Rotary Club. Tom served as president
of the Indiana Auto Dealers Association.
He and his wife Karen raised their four
daughters in Valparaiso, and are members

As the owner of Kennedy Buick Mazda
in Valparaiso, I can tell you that the
last two years have been the most
challenging in my memory. Not only
have we faced the recession and its
effects, we have had to deal with the
General Motors bankruptcy. After 23
years as a profitable Buick dealer who
GM repeatedly named one of the best
dealers in the country, I never could
have foreseen having to fight to keep
my franchise. However, this is the hand
we were dealt, and as any successful
small business owner knows, to be
successful you must be able to adapt
to changing environments, and be
prepared for the unexpected. The key
to surviving is to be conservative in the
good times so that you can ride out the
rough times, and reinvest your profits
into your business. We invested in
Mazda 16 years ago, which has turned
out to be one of the best business
decisions I have ever made.
I have always admired Coach Lou Holtz,
retired football coach, sportscaster,
author and motivational speaker.
I once heard him say that some people
put all their emphasis on looking for
a “winner,” whether in sports or in
hiring. But Coach Holtz said, rather
than looking for a winner, he looks for
an individual who refuses to fail. I have
thought of that often in these trying
times. We refuse to fail, and we will
prevail. Mazda is an excellent product.
The Mazda brand, combined with the
best service department in the area,
the finest used cars anywhere, and our
team of talented, committed employees
is our strength.
The key for small businesses getting
through tough times is four fold: stay
lean, stay positive, control debt and
expenses, and hire the best people.
Following these tenets has made it
possible for our dealership to ride out
this downturn and thrive. In fact, we
have hired another manager and some
new staff. I have no doubt that we have
the best team in place that we have
ever had. I am very fortunate to have
loyal, talented employees who give our
customers wonderful service which
turns a sale into a lifelong client. Some
of our employees have been with us
from day one in 1987, so we really are
like family.
Small business is vital to the U.S.
economy and its recovery. Small
businesses employ about 50 percent
of all private sector workers. The latest
figures show that small businesses
create 75 percent of the net new jobs in
our economy.
Throughout history, we have
