About Gilbert
Gilbert is central to many of Arizona’s scenic attractions. Northeast lies the
Superstition Mountains, location of the legendary Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine,
as well as the Tonto National Forest which contains scenery ranging from
rugged desert to cool pines. South lies Saguaro National Park, home to the
giant saguaro, a plant found in only a small portion of the United States. But
you don't have to travel outside of Gilbert to discover the outdoors. Considered
the premier bird watching facility in the Phoenix metro region, the Riparian
Preserve located within Gilbert features hiking and equestrian trails and
provides an opportunity for wildlife and bird watching (approximately 250
species of birds have been sighted).
Once known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World,” Gilbert, Arizona has
evolved into one of the fastest growing communities and the largest town in
the United States. Encompassing 72.6 square miles, just southeast of Phoenix,
Gilbert has transformed from an agricultural community into a contemporary,
urban community with a relaxed but vibrant atmosphere.
Incorporated in 1920, Gilbert owes its beginnings to William “Bobby” Gilbert
who provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 to construct a rail
line between Phoenix and Florence, Arizona.
As the 2nd Safest City and the 22nd Best Place to Live in the country, you can
experience all the West has to offer in an environment that makes you feel like
you’ve come home.
The iconic water tower stands tall in downtown Gilbert in an area that once
housed little more than the post office. Today, you will find the downtown
bustling with shops, restaurants, a theater, art galleries, and is now home to
Saint Xavier University.
Gilbert offers several shopping venues from unique boutiques in our Heritage
District to the SanTan Village Shopping Center. At SanTan Village, you can find
everything from Macys, Dillards, Apple, and Coach to Sephora and Barnes &
Noble, along with many delicious dining options to satisfy everyone’s taste. If your pleasure is more along the lines of nature, relax at one of our outdoor
parks. Gilbert is home to six golf courses, five major parks, four community
pools, four community recreation centers, three theatres, and an indoor ice
arena. Throughout the year, Gilbert is host to numerous festivals, youth and
amateur sporting events, academic conferences, sports tournaments, an art
walk, and farmers markets.

INFLUX
Have you seen the INFLUX art on our front lawn at
the Gilbert Heritage Museum? The artist's name is
Brian Korsedal. INFLUX brings together art, economic
development, and property management organizations
throughout the greater Phoenix area to provide
opportunities for Arizona artists to create site-specific
temporary public art installations in a wide variety
of locations.
INFLUX provides unique project opportunities for artists
to expand their skills, innovatively apply their creativity,
and garner public recognition for their work. INFLUX
offers new perspective on the connections between
community organizations, city governments, local
businesses, artists, and audiences.
The INFLUX initiative, currently operated through the
strategic partnership of eleven organizations in Chandler,
Glendale, Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe
was launched by Scottsdale Public Art in 2010 as an
initiative for temporary installations in vacant storefronts.
The initiative has since continued to expand and gain
momentum since its inception, increasing its positive
impact on our local communities and our Arizona artists.
We are so happy to have Brian Korsedal's artwork
on display!
Gilbert Mural
Participants of Gilbert Leadership Class XXI unveiled their
community project which includes an art mural painted
on the south-facing wall of the American Legion Merrill
Mitchell Post 39 and an open space improvement with
park features in the once-vacant lot immediately south
of the mural. The mural depicts the Town of Gilbert in the
World War I era, circa 1917, with the exception of the
“Gilbert” sign, which was later added across Gilbert Road
in the early 1930’s. To further enhance the project, a plaque
has been created to explain the significance of the site
and was incorporated in the Heritage District History Walk.

Gilbert is home to a powerful 9/11 Memorial that pays
tribute to the lives lost during the worst act of terrorism
on American soil. The memorial features an 8-foot steel
girder beam that once held up the North Tower of the
World Trade Center. Four granite walls feature the names
of those lost in the attacks. The memorial rests on a
pentagon shape and is surrounded by bricks, some of
which have messages from donors and can be found at
the Municipal buildings at 50 E. Civic Center Drive.
With a vast collection of vintage artifacts, photographs,

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
Located just outside Downtown Phoenix, and within a short drive of numerous attractions and resorts, Phoenix's Sky
Harbor International Airport offers an enviable blend of business and leisure travelers, along with an impressive local
population base that it serves every single day. Annually, Phoenix is host to many college bowl games, MLB Spring
Training, NASCAR, PGA golf tournaments, Arabian horse shows, and premiere auto auctions.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the ten busiest airports in the nation based on passenger traffic.
On a typical day, more than 1,200 aircraft and more than 100,000 passengers arrive and depart, and more than 800
tons of air cargo is handled. Sky Harbor is proudly served by Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British
Airways, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Great Lakes Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest
Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, Volaris, and WestJet.
At Sky Harbor, customer
service is second only to
safety and security. Ensuring
a positive experience for all
who visit the airport is top
priority for the entire staff. They
work together to be America’s
Friendliest Airport. You can
find a Navigator volunteer at
all of the terminals dressed in
the purple shirts. So as you are
coming through and you need
to know where the closest
baggage claim area is or the
closest restaurant, you won’t
have to look too long before you
find a friendly volunteer to ask.

than just Gilbert, although we aren’t quite sure why. Here are some
drives that will show you more of our great state and allow you to be
back in your comfy hotel room in time to change for another great meal.
•
•
Apache Trail National Scenic Byway — 40-mile drive on Hwy 88.
This route is mountainous and beautiful and should take about 2
hours.
Sedona – known for their red rocks. Wake up early and spend the
day exploring. It is worth the drive and be sure to take your camera.
Day 5:
Ready for unique? We are known for our farm to table culinary
experience. Agritopia is a perfect example of the way a
community can come together and create a total experience of
a fresh, farmer’s market. Stroll the grounds to see the fresh fruits
and vegetables along with geese, chickens, pigs, and goats.
Agritopia supplies much of the produce for many of our local
restaurants including their own (see p19).
Don’t forget to include a few hours to experience our Riparian
Preserve at Water Ranch. The Preserve is organized into
various vegetative zones ranging from marshlands to native
riparian and upland vegetation areas. Approximately 298 species of birds have been identified on the site, and many insects,
fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals have found homes there as well. Over 4.5 miles of trails weave through the park,
and there are interpretive education panels on wildlife and vegetation throughout. Viewing blinds have been established at
various locations near the edge of several ponds to further enhance the visitor’s experience. A floating boardwalk crossing
the northern end of the lake allows visitors a close up view of the fish and ducks on the water. Additional educational areas
include an ethno-botanical garden, a paleontology dig site, gardens for pollinators including a hummingbird garden, and
butterfly garden (see p11). Plus, plan to stay or come back when the sun goes down. A state-of-the-art observatory and hilltop
outdoor classroom will allow you to star gaze as well as see the space station on a clear night (see p20).
