Gulfstream Expansion to Create
100 New Jobs in Brunswick
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal
announced in January of this year that
Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation will
expand its service center at the Brunswick
Golden Isles Airport in Brunswick. The
company signed a lease with the Brunswick
and Glynn County Development Authority
to develop a $25 million, 110,000 square
foot/10,219 square meter maintenance
repair and overhaul facility near its two
existing hangars. The expansion is
expected to create 100 additional jobs, a 50
percent increase in the size of Gulfstream
Brunswick’s current workforce.
“We are honored when international
companies such as Gulfstream choose to
call Georgia home,” Deal said. “Our more
than 20-year partnership with Gulfstream
underscores its faith in our business climate
and skilled workforce. This expansion will
have a significant economic impact on
Brunswick and Glynn County.”

was a record-setting 2013 for our service
organization worldwide,” said Mark Burns,
president, Gulfstream Product Support. “The
growth of our fleet has increased the demand
for aircraft maintenance and refurbishment.

Gulfstream Brunswick, located about 75
miles south of Gulfstream headquarters
in Savannah, has been a company site
since 1992. It is home to a service center
and completions facility spread over
approximately 55,000 square feet/5,110
square meters of hangar space. In 2013, its
employees serviced more than 150 aircraft.
The service center is a certified U.S. Federal
Aviation Administration, European Aviation
Safety Agency and Transport Canada repair
station.
“This expansion would not be possible
without the efforts of many, including
Governor Deal and his team at the Georgia
Department of Economic Development, the
Glynn County Commissioners, the Brunswick
and Glynn County Development Authority
and the Glynn County Airport Commission,”
said Jay Neely, vice president, Law and
Public Affairs, Gulfstream. “We are very
thankful for their support in ensuring this
project’s success.”
Gulfstream is also expanding its Savannah
facilities through a $500 million, seven-year
plan that has already resulted in more than
2,500 new Gulfstream jobs in three years.

One of America’s Busiest Ports
Continues to Set New Records
Total tonnage at the Port of Brunswick reached 3.31 million
for Calendar Year 2013, a 25 percent increase over the
previous year.
That growth was led by the performance at Colonel’s Island
and East River terminals.
Colonel’s Island Terminal handled a record 639,617 auto and
machinery units in CY2013, up from 612,427 in the previous
year. In tonnage, Colonel’s Island went from 1.84 million
tons in 2012 to 2.24 million tons in 2013 – an increase of 21
percent.
The Port of Brunswick handles approximately 10 percent
of U.S. roll-on/roll-off trade, and 12 percent of U.S. Ro/
Ro imports. The port ranks third in the nation for auto and
machinery trade, serving nearly two dozen domestic and
foreign carmakers, as well as heavy equipment producers.
In 2013, Brunswick added customers such as Toyota, for
whom GPA exports Venza crossover vehicles, and Subaru,
which imports five different models through Brunswick to
supply dealers in the Southeast.
Also in 2013, Caterpillar opened a manufacturing site near
Athens, Ga., to build small track-type tractors and mini
hydraulic excavators. Company officials said Caterpillar
decided to shift production from Japan to the U.S., in part
because of the Port of Brunswick. Caterpillar’s 1 million
square-foot facility will directly employ 1,400 people.
In support of roll-on / roll-off cargo, the GPA has completed
$3.7 million in structural upgrades at Colonel’s Island for
roads, bridges, staging areas, rail loading/offloading areas,
and fender upgrades.
At East River Terminal, bulk cargo grew from 661,320 tons in
2012 to 930,518 tons in 2013, a 40 percent increase.
Also at East River, $11 million in improvements have been
made to support the export of bulk products such as peanut
hull pellets, and wood pellets and chips. The GPA and terminal
operator Logistec shared the cost of the upgrades, including
a new conveyance system, a new fender system and dock
renovations, as well as deepening Berths 1, 2 and the Lanier
Dock to 36 feet at mean low water.

Meet Chuck Scragg, Our New Executive Director,
Brunswick & Glynn County Development Authority
Glynn County and
Brunswick sit poised for business
growth. With the Brunswick port,
Interstate 95, two Class A railroads,
two passenger and commercial
airports, adequate infrastructure,
available land, a recently opened
career academy and high school,
and a new technical college breaking
ground, things could not be sunnier
for this beautiful area. The Golden
Isles, long a tourist destination, is
attracting a lot of attention from
business and industrial site selection
consultants these days, and why
not?
At the forefront of this wave is
the Brunswick and Glynn County
Development Authority. It is
tasked with the recruitment of new
businesses and the encouragement
and enabling of existing businesses
to expand and grow. “One of the
most important assets we have is a
fantastic leadership team”, explained
Chuck Scragg, the new Executive
Director of the Development
Authority. Mr. Scragg recently took
over the helm of the development
authority after working over 30
years at Georgia Power, 20 of
those in community and economic
development. During his career,
Mr. Scragg has assisted in locating
and expanding over 135 businesses
and industries creating over 15,000
jobs and over $3.5 billion in capital
investment in Georgia.

Development Authority added, “We
have assembled a team from these
groups that works together toward
common goals, and we are ready to
commit the people, the resources
and the time to make things happen”.
A recent Gulfstream Corporation
Expansion announcement will add
100 jobs and a $30 million capital
investment at the Brunswick Golden
Isles Airport. It greatly expands
their maintenance, repair and
overhaul (MRO) capabilities. The
Brunswick Golden Isles Airport has
had commercial air service by Delta
Airlines for over three decades
and makes the Golden Isles easily
accessible for travelers. Other
expansions have created over 500
jobs in the past three years. Three
aerospace suppliers have located
near the airport to service the
growing aerospace industry here.
Additionally, the Brunswick Port
is now the number one combined
exporter and importer of new
automobiles in the world.

FLETC: Glynn County’s Largest Employer
One of the country’s most valuable assets, the Federal Law Enforcement
Training Centers (FLETC), has expanded its role in the wake of 9/11 and the war
on terrorism. In fiscal year 2013, FLETC trained almost 64,000 students, and over
one million since its inception in 1970. According to FLETC Director Connie Patrick,
“The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers train the officers and agents who
protect our homeland. We have four law enforcement training centers in America,
and approximately 60% of the training workload is handled at the FLETC Glynco
headquarters here in Brunswick.”
Serving as an interagency law enforcement training center for more than 90
Federal agencies, the FLETC vision is “training Excellence Through Partnerships.”
The impressive 1,600-acre center also provides services to state, local, tribal and
international law enforcement agencies.
As the largest law enforcement training facility in the country, the Center has an
annual budget of approximately $245 million each year, according to Director
Patrick. A recent economic study revealed that FLETC impacts the economy for
the immediate five-county area to the tune of nearly $315 million dollars each year!

Economic Diversity Began With
the Development of Our Ports
Going way back to our country’s
infancy in 1789, we have President George
Washington to thank because he had the
foresight to name Brunswick “one of the
five original ports of entry” for the American
colonies. Modern-day Glynn County has
been a direct beneficiary of his vision. The
county seat of Brunswick was officially
established eight years later, in 1797, when
the county seat was moved from Federica
on Saint Simons Island. Today, the port of
Brunswick remains one of the largest and
leading deep sea-access ports in America.
In 2014, the port of Brunswick became the
top port in the U.S. for new car imports,
and ranked second in the country for the
total import and export of new automobiles.
Agricultural shipments continue to gain
impressive momentum as well. Glynn County
is the second largest coastal community in

Georgia behind Savannah, with a current
estimated population of 81,022. The
immediate five-county metropolitan area
boasts 112,370 people, and has a combined
GDP (gross domestic product) of $3.9 billion.
Tourism continues to be a driving force as
well, and has averaged growing at a rate
of 7% per-year since pre-recession levels.
The current 2014 year is running at an even
healthier clip, up 15% over last year alone.
Despite the eventual ravages of an
American Civil War (when the town had
to be evacuated), a couple of hurricanes,
and a bout with a yellow fever epidemic,
the county seat of Brunswick persevered
to become a thriving community of major
importance. The original flow of port products
consisted primarily of cotton, lumber, naval
store products, and oysters. In latter years,
the shrimp industry took over for oysters
as the leading seafood product. Glynn
Academy, which was founded in 1788 by an
act of the Georgia General Assembly, has
the distinction of being the second oldest
high school in the American South, and the
seventh oldest in the USA. During that same
era, stores, a bank, taverns, and service-

bustling Brunswick, which, incidentally, was
one of only a few communities in Georgia
to operate with electric street cars from
1909 through 1926. The Brunswick Country
Club and golf course, designed by famous
designer David Ross, was established in
1920. A sophisticated tourism trade emerged
in Brunswick at the popular Oglethorpe
Hotel , and on nearby Jekyll Island, which
became an exclusive getaway for some of
the country’s most elite millionaires at the
exclusive Jekyll Club (circa 1886). The
Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Morgans, Pulitzers,
and Goodyears (to name a few), all built
summer cottages on Jekyll Island, many of
which may be toured today along with the
original hotel which served as the dining
facility. The Hotel St. Simons was another
popular attraction, which could be reached
only via steamboat travel or private boat.
The hospitality industry evolved further into
the twentieth century with the completion
of the F. J. Torras Causeway in 1924. This
highway led over the fabled “Marshes
of Glynn”, connecting the barrier islands
with the mainland of Brunswick and the
internationally-acclaimed resort on Sea
pride in becoming a golfing mecca over the
past century. Several classic restaurants
and boutiques sprang-up throughout Glynn
County during the 1940’s and 50’s on both
the islands and mainland, a healthy trend
which continues to this very day.

Interestingly, a highly popular card and dance
club existed at the King & Prince site six
years before the hotel was completed. Sea
Island came about as an investment by the
Howard Coffin Family, of Hudson Automobile
fame. The Golden Isles have taken due

ships”. Also, during the war, the Brunswick
Glynco Naval Air Station became the
largest blimp base in the entire world.
Glynco is an abbreviation for Glynn County.
Without question, the community’s link
with the modern-day aviation industries
and government agencies has traditionally
been a major component of economic
development success in Glynn County. In
fact, the largest current employer in Glynn
County, the Federal Law Enforcement
Agency, arrived on the scene in 1975, a
year after the shocking closing of Glynco
Naval Air Station. Fortunately, local leaders
rallied to recruit the center, which was once
planned by the Federal government to be
built in Washington, D.C. But, a three-year
construction delay forced Congress to

consider other surplus sites in the USA. The
rest is history. The former Glynco site on the
outskirts of Brunswick was approved, and
today, FLETC serves 60% of the 90 federal
agencies, including Homeland Security
training, with an annual economic impact of
more than $315 million on the immediate
region. Last year alone, over 64,000 students
were trained at the impressive 1,600-acre
center.
Another feather in the local cap is the
impressive Brunswick-Golden Isles Airport,
an ultra-modern $11 million facility, efficiently
serving area residents,
businesses and visitors by
connecting with international
flights in Atlanta. The facility
was established as strictly
a commercial airport in
1980, utilizing the former
Naval Air Station site. On
Saint Simons Island, the
Malcom McKinnon Airport is
a public-use facility founded
in 1935. It was named for
the Chairman of the County
Commission at the time of
construction. During World
War II, it operated as a home
to the Navy Radar Training School.
Several active firms can also trace their
heritage to early times. They include: The
Gilbert, Harrell, Summerford & Martin, P.C.,
a law firm, established in 1871; the Leavy
family began publishing The Brunswick
News in 1902; Brunswick-Coca Cola Bottling
Company (1903); Pinova Solutions (1911);
Lang Building Supply (1905); Cunningham
Jewelers (1916); King & Prince Seafood
(1924); J.C. Strother Co. (1938); and Georgia
Pacific/Brunswick Cellulose (1938).
LAWN SPRAYING
Mr. Albert Shelander, a leading citizen and
entrepreneur in the real estate and insurance
business, now 87, recounts the following
story going back to his high school days. “I
was a young buck, still in high school. I was
so excited because I had just received my
social security card and it was my very first
day of real work. My job was being part of the
survey crew as land was being cleared at the
new Glynco Navy base site. At lunch time,
wouldn’t you know it, the stump I was sitting
on yielded a family of baby rattlesnakes!
Eventually, young Albert moved on with an
impressive career in the Navy and graduated
from Emory University, later becoming a
licensed real estate broker in 1951 and
president of Shelander & Associates. He
added with a chuckle, “Although I’ve had my
fair share of challenges, I’ve had a good life,
and I am a survivor.”

Saluting the “Marshes of Glynn”
During a visit to
Brunswick in 1874,
Sidney Lanier, the
esteemed Georgia
poet and musician,
was so captivated by
the sheer magnitude
and beauty of the
vast coastal marshes,
tidal rivers, and wildlife that he penned his
most beloved poem, The Marshes of Glynn.
As this poet laureate so eloquently stated:
Oh, what is abroad in the marsh
and the terminal sea?
Somehow my soul seems suddenly free
From the weighing of fate
and the sad discussion of sin,
By the length and the breadth and the
sweep of the Marshes of Glynn
In addition to Sidney Lanier, many have
found peace and inspiration beneath the
oaks bordering the Marshes of Glynn. In a
visit to the Georgia coast in the 1930’s, Helen
Keller paused for a photo when she visited
Lanier’s Oak. Ms. Keller was an admirer
of Lanier’s poetry and particularly loved

Brunswick and the Golden Isles. Lanier’s

Yes, Sidney Lanier would be proud if he were
alive today. The marshlands and tidal creeks
serve as outstretched welcoming arms to the
thousands of visitors who arrive by way of
the imposing “Gateway to the Golden Isles”,
The Sidney Lanier Bridge. Built 12 years ago
at a cost of $110 million, the architectural
gem spans 7,780 feet and has a grade of
200 vertical feet within 3/4 of a mile.
The County Seat of Brunswick
A quaint port city surrounded by historic
charm, the county seat of Brunswick was
founded in 1771 and named for the ancestral
home of King George II. The turpentine
industry, railroading and shipping became
mainstays of the economy following the
Civil War as Brunswick became a port of
consequence. It survived a vicious hurricane
in 1898, which put much of the city under
water. Later, in World War II, the city became
an important shipyard as about 100 “liberty
ships” were constructed by some 16,000
workers. Following the war, pulp, paper and
food processing became major commodities.
Brunswick is one of 43 MainStreet cities in
Georgia. Downtown Brunswick is currently
developing an extensive master plan, which
will provide a vision for the future, and an
active Downtown Development Authority
has made giant strides. Strolling the streets
of downtown Brunswick, one will find an
eclectic mix of antique and specialty shops,
art galleries and restaurants. The Historic
Ritz Theatre is also located downtown at
1530 Newcastle Street.
The Old Town Historic District displays
scores of Victorian and Edwardian style
homes. Many are graced with gingerbread
or wrought iron fences. A driving, walking
or biking tour of the district will give you a
keener appreciation for Brunswick.
Located on US Highway 17, lies HofwylBroadfield Plantation, a rice plantation
that dates back to 1807. Tours and holiday
events give visitors to this state park a
glimpse into the culture of Georgia’s rice
coast. Historically, the plantation was once
a cypress swamp until William Brailsford
converted the inhospitable terrain into a rice
plantation. Brailsford’s son-in-law, James
M. Troup, acquired more land and oversaw
its growth to over 7,000 acres worked by

some 350 slaves. It was a highly productive
venture until hurricanes and the abolition of
slavery caused its decline.
Stunning Saint Simons Island
Heading across the causeway toward Saint
Simons on any given day, you’ll be treated
to magical views of the fabled “Marshes
of Glynn”, made famous by poet Sidney
Lanier. You’ll soon realize why we’re called
the Golden Isles. Stunning panoramic vistas
of lush grasses feast the eyes in every
direction as you make your way over the
scenic Frederica River and past the beautiful
marinas to your right and left.
As you arrive on Saint Simons Island, bear to
the right and head toward The Pier-Village–
one of Saint Simons Island’s most popular
destinations. Quaint shops and restaurants, a
fishing pier, Neptune Park for outdoor family
gatherings, are all within eyesight of the most
beloved landmark of all – the Saint Simons
Island Lighthouse. Visit the headquarters
for the Coastal Georgia Historical Society,
tour the museum and climb the 129 steps
of the lighthouse. From this vantage point
you can see neighboring Jekyll Island,
the awesome Sidney Lanier Bridge and
the southern end of Saint Simons Island.
You’ll purchase your tickets at the adjoining
impressive 10,000 square-foot A.W. Jones
Heritage Center. The facility opened in 2008
following a $5.5 million fundraising project
which was raised locally over a two and a
half year campaign. The Heritage Center
was conceived as a “community legacy
project” when the G8 Host Committee for
the 2004 Group of Eight Sea Island Summit
agreed to set aside $2.5 million toward the
project if $5 million could be raised by the
Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Inside
you can view the permanent exhibit about
the historic Summit, including details on how
Sea Island was selected for this international
gathering of world leaders. There is an
intriguing memorabilia section, an extensive
research library, and a 1,400 square-foot
multi-purpose room, providing a stage and
a catering kitchen for special events. You’ll
most assuredly be enthralled by the changing
displays devoted to Georgia’s rich cultural
and natural history.
We recommend you take a trolley tour of the
island. Pick ups take place in the Pier-Village
area. Or, you may prefer to see the island
by car or bike. The Sea Island Golf Club is
located on the site of Retreat Plantation.
As you pass by the entrance of this amazing
resort, home of the highly-heralded Lodge
at Sea Island, you will get a glimpse at the
Avenue of Oaks, certainly one of the most
beautiful natural stretches of real estate in
the Southeast.
Other nearby historic attractions include the
Bloody Marsh Battle Site, site of the 1742
skirmish where the British ambushed and
defeated Spanish troops. Take a drive toward
the northern end of the island on Frederica
Road, the site of several shopping centers,
en route to historic Christ Church, one of the
most photographed sites in America. Many

were milled in 1794. Old slave dwellings still

provides a view of some of the Island’s most

a popular fishing pier and recreational area

on the pier and you will have a view of the
southern end of Sea Island, one of America’s
most prestigious coastal communities, site of
the five-star Cloister Hotel. A private highway
and bridge connects Sea Island with Saint
Simons. However, one must be a resident
of Sea Island, a guest of a resident, or a
registered lodging guest to gain access.
Other suggested destinations include
the Hampton River Club Marina on the
extreme northern end of the island and
the Morningstar Marina on the causeway
leading from Brunswick to Saint Simons
Island. Boating enthusiasts venture out to
other Glynn County harbors including the
Brunswick Landing Marina (the largest in
Georgia), the Jekyll Harbor Marina (Jekyll
Island), and the Two-Way Fish Camp &
Marina (in route to nearby Darien), to name
just a few. The tides of coastal Georgia can
be challenging, but area marinas have the
staff and information to guide captains.
An exhilarating mile walk south of East
Beach is the impressive King & Prince
Beach & Golf Resort (hotel circa 1941).
The stained glass windows in the main
dining room are stunning and the beach view
from the lush Saint Augustine-grass lawn is
unsurpassed. In 2014, the resort unveiled
an impressive renovation of the atrium lobby
and introduced their ECHO dining room,
featuring splendid ocean-front views.
Challenging golf courses (public and private),
and scores of tennis courts give residents
and their guests ample opportunity for
challenging recreational diversions. Biking is
another popular island tradition (even on the
beaches when the tides allow).
If the beach is calling, you will find several
miles of fine public beach off Ocean
Boulevard to the north and south of
the historic U.S. Coast Guard Station.
The former U.S. Coast Guard Station
today serves as the Maritime Center,
a wonderful family natural history and
ecological experience which has been
restored under the auspicies of the Coastal
Georgia Historical Society. The county
has constructed impressive new bathroom
facilities near the beach entrance. Nearby
is Massengale Park which provides picnic
and bathroom facilities. For an awesome
sunrise head to East Beach at the break of
day, or perhaps you might prefer a moonlight
stroll with someone special. It’s also a
popular hangout for fishermen. Locally, this
extreme northern tip of East Beach is known
as Gould’s Inlet. The small fishing pier is
an amazing place to photograph a glorious
sunrise, or to view an extraordinary gathering
of sea birds. Look to your left while standing

Record Growth
In Tourism Cited
With a solid marketing campaign in place
and the bonus of national exposure through
recent movies, specials on HGTV, the Travel
Channel, and SciFi channel, 2014 appears to
be headed for a banner year in tourism. Scott
McQuade, the President and Chief Executive
Officer for the Golden Isles Convention and
Visitors Bureau, has good reason to be
smiling. “We’re 8% ahead of last year, and
that same trend was apparent in 2013. We
have had three solid years of significant
continual gains.”And the news gets even
better for Scott because bed tax collections
(based on advance reservations), reflect that
the current months of May, July, and August
could be an estimated 15% higher than last
year’s all time record.
Statistics from the Glynn County bed tax
confirm that in the most current fiscal year
of 2012-2013, there were an estimated
2,253,661 annual visitors to Brunswick and
the Golden Isles. Their spending totaled
$1,014,147,530. That’s quite a boost to
the local economy. This assessment of
information is based on the number of
tourists spending an average of $450 each
during their stay. Furthermore, the report
indicates a typical tourist will spend 28.6%
on shopping, 24.31% on food, 20% on
lodging, 17.16% on recreation and 10% on
transportation.
As a stellar example, an estimated $1.5
million was generated locally from the
filming of “Anchorman II” alone, according
to McQuade. Stars Will Ferrell, Christina
Applegate, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd
filmed the spoof, which highlighed scenes
on the Saint Simons Island beaches. The
hangar at Gruber Aviation also served as

a backdrop for a couple of scenes and a
superb equipment center for the film crew.
Of course, anytime major stars make an
appearance to an area, it generates plenty
of publicity for the community at large.
However, in the long run, the made-for-TV
movies and exposure on the Travel Channel,
might add up to even more valuable
coverage. The long-range goal is to make the
Golden Isles a state-of-the-art locale in
Georgia, effectively meeting and exceeding
the expectations and demands of the film
industry. Other films which have been
produced in the Golden Isles over the years
include: Robert Redford’s “The Legend of
Bagger Vance”, “Glory”, “Camilla”, “The
View From Pompey’s Head”, and “X-Men:
First Class”. The made-for-TVseries “Royal
Pains”, also selected the Golden Isles for
filming.
What remains on the horizon
for tourism?
The website GoldenIsles.com is an
excellent place to keep abreast of current
trends and opportunities for visitors. Exciting
activities such as the PGA tour event, the
McGladrey Classic in November, garner
the Golden Isles world-class prestige and
extensive television coverage.
During the fall, the Georgia-Florida football
weekend in Jacksonville draws a large throng
of loyal fans who elect to stay in the Golden
Isles. This results in a big boost for local
dining, lodging, and shopping attractions.
the striking 128,000 square-foot Jekyll Island
Convention Center, which opened over two
years ago and has been a valuable asset
to the local and state economy. Standing
five stories tall, the new Westin will provide
190 guest rooms and 10 special suites. The
facility is scheduled to open near the end of
2014.
Other recent expansions have occurred on
Jekyll, including a $16 million restoration of
the former Oceanside Inn & Suites, branding
now under the Holiday Inn banner. The resort
boasts 1,200 linear feet of unobstructed
ocean front. It is within easy walking distance
of the attractive new shoppping district about
to be completed.
The Inn at Sea Island recently opened as a
mid-price range, 85-room facility. Located
off Sea Island Road on St. Simons Island,
guests have access to all of Sea Island’s
upscale facilities. A restaurant and lounge are
also on the premises.
Also, on Saint Simons Island, the fabled
King & Prince Resort recently unveiled its
new, vibrant look at a Business After Hours
Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event. A
wide-open atrium, plus refinements to the
bar and newly-named “ECHO” Restaurant
provide patrons with sweeping sea vistas.
Action is fun-paced and spirited in the
beautiful Golden Isles of Georgia...Where the
good life keeps getting better!
Baseball, soccer, fishing, and college flyingdisk tournaments, contribute mightily toward
drawing sportsmen and their families to
Glynn County.
Over 300 new motel beds were made
available in the county in 2013, with a similar
number expected to be completed over the
next year as well. The Westin Hotel on Jekyll
Island will serve as a nearby complement to

History
French explorers went back to Europe
giving glowing accounts of the island and
the friendly reception afforded them by the
natives. In detailed diaries they described
the colorful garb worn by the Guale men
who tattooed themselves with thorns using
red, black and blue earth pigments. For a
short two-year period (1562-64), the French
flag flew here as Jean Ribault sought to
establish a haven for French Huguenots
as he explored the Georgia coast and built
fortifications.
Soon afterward, European missionaries
settled on the island in the 17th century
in hopes of converting “the savages” to
Christianity, a plan that apparently resulted in
bloody resistance by the local natives. After
admitting defeat in the 1680’s, the Spanish
deserted their settlement, which was called
San Simeon.

The English settlers arrived as early as
1735 when James Edward Oglethorpe, the
founder of Georgia, established a colony of
1,000 people and a military fortification at
Fort Frederica. It was designed to serve as
a “buffer” to protect English claims against
threatening Spanish raids. It is reported
to have been the most expansive English
fortification outside of England.
In 1742, at the Battle of Bloody Marsh,
English troops defeated invading Spaniards
against 5 to 1 odds. Today, a national
monument marks the spot where the decisive
battle took place, which virtually “broke the
back” of the Spanish colonization effort
during the War of Jenkins’ Ear and resulted
in this area being under English influence.
When thirteen colonies declared
independence, many pro-British Georgians
fled the area, including most of the Frederica
settlers. However, several pioneer Georgians
such as Raymond Demere, Jr., headed
northward to assist the cause of the colonies.
Limited fighting took place in the Saint
Simons Island area. Three British ships
were captured off the shores of Frederica by
Colonel Samuel Elbert and a small band of
Georgia patriots. They out-maneuvered the
large English sailing ships by using small
galleys. This was probably the highlight of
military action in this area by the patriots.
A noteworthy event occurred on Saint
Simons Island when religious leaders,
John and Charles Wesley, founders of the
Methodist Church, came with Oglethorpe and
helped establish a congregation at Frederica
in l735 where they preached to the natives
under tall oak trees on the same grounds of
the current Christ Episcopal Church. Today,
the beautiful church, with its magnificent
stained glass windows and gorgeous
grounds that include a cemetery with graves
of early settlers, is one of the island’s most
treasured landmarks. (The first Christ Church
was built in 1820, but was partially destroyed
by occupying Union troops during the War
Between the States. It was rebuilt in 1884
when Anson Phelps Dodge, Jr., built the
present-day structure in honor of his wife
Ellen, who died during their ‘round the world
honeymoon.)
When the struggle for independence was
over in 1783, the newly formed United States
of America was in need of a navy, which
could defend the territorial shores against
acts of aggression. So, the tough live oak
timbers from Saint Simons Island were
selected for use in the U.S.S. Constitution
and other early U.S. sailing vessels. In

1812, America was again at war with the
British. It was at this point in history that the
mother sailing vessel earned the nickname of
“Old Ironsides” because British cannonballs
literally bounced off the oak hull of the U.S.S.
Constitution.

Island cotton.This special variety of cotton
was in such demand on the worldwide market
that many slaves were imported from Africa to
handle the work load. Several of their direct
ancestors reside in the immediate area to this
day.
Famous dignitaries frequented Saint Simons
Island during the plantation era including John
James Audubon, Aaron Burr, Eli Whitney, and
famous English actress Fanny Kemble. The
latter’s journal was published during the War
Between the States and is credited to have
played a major role in arousing anti-south
feelings in England.
Plantation life came to an abrupt halt with
the Civil War because of the northern
troop occupation and subsequent slave
emancipation. Most of the land by this point
had been ruined by the lack of crop rotation
and the neglected soil was overgrown and
parched. Many of the prominent families who
had enjoyed such a gracious lifestyle had
to leave the old plantation and literally pick
up the pieces and start a new life, with fond
memories of the life that used to be.
The African-American culture of the Georgia
Sea Islands is perhaps best being passed
down by the talented Sea Island Singers who
have traveled extensively throughout the
United States, Canada and Mexico. In 1933,
Bessie Jones was asked to perform with a
group of singers on the island. With them, she
began to sing the African-American songs that
she had learned from her grandparents, who
had been slaves. Within a few years, she had
earned national attention and was asked to
sing in Carnegie Hall. The tradition continues
to this day by new generations who have
passed down this important legacy.

Governments
Glynn County is governed by seven elected commissioners who
employ a county administrator. The City of Brunswick is managed
by an elected mayor and four commissioners, who appoint a city
manager. St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island
are under the jurisdiction of the county. Jekyll Island is a state park
and operated under the administration of the Jekyll Island Authority,
a state appointed board.

Shortly after the American Revolution,
the foundation of public education
in coastal Georgia was created by
an act that gave five commissioners
the power to sell public land for the
purpose of generating monies to
build an “academy.” In their wildest
imaginations, those original stewards
of learning in Glynn County could not
begin to fathom the advances that
would take place over the next 225
years.
Today, nearly 13,000 students in
grades prekindergarten through 12 are
riding a wave of technology that brings
the world into their classroom, opening
the doors to limitless possibilities and
visions of what their future may hold.
With learning environments that are
creative and interactive, teachers
engage students both within and
outside of the classroom. Innovative
programs range from an iPad pilot
project at the new Risley Middle
School that uses cool new apps to
create music or explain the different
forms of irony, to the “Salt Marsh
Soldiers” at Glynn Middle School who
study the area’s diverse ecosystems
in the vast outdoor classroom of the
famous Marshes of Glynn.
In grades 9-12, students at Brunswick
High School, Glynn Academy and the
Golden Isles Career Academy can
choose career pathways to acquire
skills required for high-tech jobs in the
area’s businesses and industries. For
students who will attend a college or
university after graduation, Advanced
Placement® and dual-enrollment
courses help prepare them for the

The College of Coastal Georgia
is a four-year baccalaureate school in the
University System of Georgia, providing
an affordable education and signature
service-learning academic initiatives in the
natural beauty and abundant sunshine of
the southeast coast. Coastal Georgia was
named one of the nation’s best values in
higher education, according to the U.S.
Department of Education (June 2012),
recognized among the 10% of American
public four-year colleges providing the best
dollar value in education.
The College offers Bachelor’s degrees
in American studies, biological sciences
(including coastal ecology), business, health
informatics, mathematics, nursing, public
affairs, psychology, teacher education and
career associate degrees in hospitality
management (including culinary arts),
nursing, radiologic science and laboratory

Service-learning is a teaching approach in

Coastal Georgia became a residential
campus in 2011 with a student residential
complex – Lakeside Village – and a
50,000-square-foot Campus Center with full
dining facilities, bookstore and coffee shop,
health center, and the Stembler Theatre.
With a current enrollment of nearly 3,000
students, the College plans academic and
infrastructure expansions to accommodate
some 6,000 students by 2020.

States Athletic Conference, Coastal
Georgia offers men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s tennis,
men’s and women’s golf and women’s
softball and volleyball. Campus intramural
sports include volleyball, soccer,
basketball, flag football, tennis and dodge

Cultural and fine arts programs enrich
student life and draw the community to
campus for performances, exhibits, and
lectures. The College is home to the HuieWilcox Gallery, a permanent collection of
art with a distinctively coastal influence.
Music runs the gamut from artists such as
jazz guitarist Russell Malone to classical
violin selections played by Maestro Luis
Haza. From rousing dance performances,
such as Step Afrika! and international
film festivals to discussions of domestic
and foreign policy, economic roundtables,
and scholarly presentations, the College
community is intellectually stretched and
stimulated. Many programs are free and
open to the public.
Extra-curricular organizations round out the
college experience. Mariners’ Log campus
newspaper, award-winning Seaswells
literary magazine, the Student Government
Association, and over fifteen campus

Arts in Action
Without question, we are a vibrant
community energetically embracing a
thriving arts community, plus awesome
events and activities. Golden Isles Arts and
Humanities Association (GIAHA) is the
coordinating arts council for Glynn County
and the City of Brunswick. GIAHA manages
the Ritz Theatre (downtown Brunswick’s
historic arts center) and picturesque Mary
Ross Waterfront Park, the site of many
outdoor concerts and community events.
Throughout the year, GIAHA offers an
impressive variety of quality arts and
entertainment from around the corner and
around the world. Theatre, dance, music and
more can be found at the Ritz, and fans of
great movies can see their favorites on the
big screen at the Ritz all year
long, including a weekly classic
movies series every summer.
In addition, an eclectic array
of visual art exhibits graces
the Ritz Theatre Gallery
throughout the year from
local student art to touring
exhibitions. GIAHA also
sponsors special events
including military band concerts
and the Old Fashioned Fourth
of July Celebration. Unique and
valuable programs are brought
into local schools through the
Arts-In-Education program.

Diverse Live Performances
You can take in a play, attend the symphony,
enjoy a concert by the sea or dance to
a live band. Professional and amateur
performers regularly entertain the Golden
Isles community. From October through
April, you can find live performances to suit
anyone’s taste: concerts are offered by the
Coastal Symphony of Georgia, The Island
Concert Association and the Brunswick
Community Concert Association.
Involvement opportunities are available for
young and old alike.
Community theatre abounds with The Island
Players and C.A.P.E. (Craft AppreciationPerformance Education) Theatre, bringing
to the stage comedy, drama and musicals.

Actors Theatre, which holds

Southern Dance Theatre

In the summer the lawn of the
St. Simons Lighthouse is home
to A Little Light Music sponsored by the
Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Jazz
in the Park at Neptune Park’s venue, is
sponsored by GIAHA during the late spring
and summer months. Local musicians play
at clubs and cabarets throughout the Golden
Isles and festivals like the Brunswick
Rockin’ Stewbilee. A pet parade, classic
cars, stew-tasting competition, and featured
live music by regional or local bands highlight
this popular event.

Stimulating Visual Arts
The natural beauty of the Golden Isles
makes it the perfect home to visual artists in
all mediums, and the natural resources are
supplemented by a large number of visual
art galleries each offering unique works by
noted and up-and-coming artists. Glynn Art
Association, located in the Village on St.
Simons Island, is a nonprofit organization
that supports visual artists in the community
with its Visual Arts Center on Beachview
Drive and offers classes with local artists
throughout the year. Jekyll Island Art
Association regularly sponsors exhibits in
Goodyear Cottage while Mistletoe Cottage
houses the impressive Rosario Russell Fiore
Collection.
When 23 nationally-acclaimed artists from 11
states descended on the Golden Isles for 16
days in April of 2012 to capture the beauty
of the islands, the event forever underscored
the importance of Glynn County as a major
destination for the Fine Arts.––The “Plein Air
Affair”, sponsored by Glynn Art Association,
consisted of painting, photography, lectures,
receptions, and “art in the park” festivals
on Saint Simons Island. Similar ongoing
events continue to make the Golden Isles a
showcase of excellence.
Another major event which has drawn high
praise is the Georgia Literary Festival, held
at the impressive Jekyll Island Convention
Center. Contemporary regional authors and
playwrights are often featured at seminars
and book signings. Local celebrities such
as playwright Eugene O’Neill, and historical
novelist, Eugenia Price are honored and held
in high esteem on a national basis.
Speaking of history, if you have an interest
in history and lighthouses in particular, don’t
miss the A.W. Jones Heritage Center
on Saint Simons Island where changing
exhibits are on display courtesy of the
Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Be sure
and venture to the top of the lighthouse for
stunning coastal views. Also on Saint Simons
Island is the impressive Maritime Center
housed in the historic Coast Guard station.
Another “don’t miss” museum for history buffs
is the Jekyll Island Museum where you will
learn about the lifestyles of the millionaires
who owned “cottages” on Jekyll Island in
the early 1900’s or take a fascinating and
informative trolly or carriage tour.

First Friday Celebrations are held in
downtown Brunswick on the first Friday of
every month. These celebrations provide live
bands at several restaurants and outdoor
parks. Periodic theme concerts occur often in
downtown Brunswick, so the fun never stops.
The annual Elvis Festival features scores
of national and international contestants.––

Voter Registration:
You may register to vote immediately after
establishing residency. Glynn County
residents may register at 16 locations
throughout the Golden Isles. To register,
proof of residency and identification are
needed. For more information, call the Glynn

Pet Regulations:
All dogs and cats must have current rabies
vaccination. For current guidelines call
Animal Control at 912-554-7500 or if you
have an interest in adopting a pet, call the
Humane Society at 912-264-1191. Leash
laws apply throughout the county, with
special rules for beaches. Be sure to abide
by posted regulations.
Climate & Elevation:
The annual average rainfall is approximately
54 inches while the average temperature is
a pleasant 68 degrees. The elevation is a
statewide low of 14 feet above sea level on
the mainland at Brunswick. Although you can
wear casual clothes most of the year, you will
need to break out the sweaters periodically
during the late fall and winter months.
Jekyll Island Causeway Decals:
Jekyll Island decals are $45 per year, with a
one-time $13 fee, and may be obtained at
the Welcome Center to avoid the standard $6
per auto daily toll fee. For more information,

Tides:
There are four tides per 24-hour period: Two
low tides alternating with two high tides, each
approximately six hours apart. The typical
difference between high and low tide, in
water depth at a given point, is approximately
7 feet. We recommend you view current
tide charts at local marinas before venturing
out on sea excursions and pay attention to
warning signs posted on beaches.
