You ! -Jimmy PAGE 1 VOLUME 1, ISSUE V Hydration for the Golfer-do your part to protect yourself Sherry Robinson During a golf lesson recently in 90-degree heat, I recognized that I was feeling the effects of dehydration and heat exposure first hand. Although I’d purposely hydrated all day in anticipation of the late afternoon lesson and consumed nearly an entire bottle of water as I took to the lesson, I began to feel dizzy, weak and light headed. Our bodies are like a little furnace. Pumping blood, breathing and digestive activity all generate heat deep in the core of our body. If you’re on the golf course in the heat, the activity of the muscles generates even more energy. Our bodies are made up of 60% water. Depleting only 10% of that water could result in an inability to stand, let alone walk. If you haven't consumed enough fluids to sweat, your body’s core temperature will rise. Collapse can come on quickly. Even though the body gives fair warning of the problem, many people fail to react to the warning signs or don’t recognize them as a problem. The circulation in your body helps to dissipate heat, but when the air temperature is higher than 90°F, cooling by sweat is the only way to prevent the body from overheating. Cooling though evaporation, or sweating, is only possible when your body has been provided with enough fluids. Failing to properly hydrate can result in dizziness, fainting, digestive problems and even death. Having another birthday last month, I can appreciate the fact that there are many things that fatigue me quicker than they did when I was in my 30’s. For those 50 years of age and older you’re subject to increasing risk of overheating. After age 65 you’re more than twice as likely to suffer heat-related problems as someone in their 30's. The larger you are the more at risk you are, too. The distance from your skin to your body center and the amount of fat insulating the core dramatically affect the body's ability to cool itself. ! JULY, 2012 To avoid negative effects of the heat during golf season be sure to: • Drink plenty of fluids. Plain water or low calorie sports drinks (like the Propel that Dottie has for us in the Clubhouse) are best. Remember that sodas or alcoholic drinks can further dehydrate you during hot weather. Also note that if you have had a little more than usual to drink the night before, you are already at risk for dehydration, even without the exposure to the heat. • Wear breathable cotton clothing. Light colors are best. • If you’re not riding in a cart, carry an umbrella for shelter. I’ve seen some really cool heat reflective golf umbrellas on some of the carts at Spring Valley. Google to find these online along with some other products such as lightweight hats with sweat bands and cooling scarves to wrap around your neck. •If you do walk – play earlier in the day or consider riding the back nine. That walk up 16 is what usually gets me. Know the Symptoms of Dehydration - Beginning symptoms of dehydration include dry, warm skin; cramping of the arms and legs and dizziness. As dehydration worsens the symptoms include rapid pulse, sunken eyes, irritability, drowsiness, dark yellow urine, flushed face, nausea, vomiting, weakness, irrational behavior and confusion. If you, or someone with you, experiences heat related problems: •Immediately get out of the sun and seek shelter. •Begin to reintroduce fluids to the system. Cool water is the best. (Very cold water may prove a shock to the system and exacerbate the symptoms.) Drink it gently. •Apply cooling compresses to points of high blood flow like the neck, wrists, inner thighs and under the arms. •Do not leave a person suffering from heat stroke or dehydration alone. •Anyone suffering visible effects should seek medical attention immediately-do not wait.
