Duncan Grinnell-Milne was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in
1915 and following his flying training, he joined No.16 Squadron in
France, scoring his first victory flying a BE2. In late 1915, he was shot
down and crash landed behind enemy lines. He spent more than two
years in a German POW camp before escaping. Returning to flying
duty as the CO of No.56 Squadron RFC, he managed to score five
more victories in the last weeks of the war. His unique SE5a carried
the name ‘Schweinhund’, a reference to how the German guards
addressed him and his fellow POWs.

Flying the Bf 109 throughout his career, Luftwaffe fighter ace
Günther Rall, ended the war with 272 aerial victories, making him
the third most successful fighter ace of all time. Serving through the
Battles of France and Britain, it was not until his involvement in
Operation Barbarossa that his victory tally began to increase in
spectacular fashion. After the war, Rall offered his services to the
RAF in evaluating the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. He was also
the star of many WWII documentaries.

As strong German forces moved to secure their southern flank and
rectify a failed Italian attempt to invade Greece, Allied forces found
themselves in a steady retreat towards Crete. Extensive air operations
saw large numbers of RAF aircraft engaged in fighting with both
German and Italian air force units and despite initial successes, they
came under increasing pressure. Perhaps the most successful Hawker
Hurricane Mk.I fighter of this difficult period was V7795, usually
flown by Pilot Officer William Vale, of No.80 Squadron, Royal Air
Force. Still displaying its standard RAF day fighter camouflage
scheme, this unusual aircraft also included some additional field
applied camouflage modifications to the leading edge and engine
cowling, which were applied to just a small number of Hurricanes.
Vale claimed eight enemy aircraft destroyed whilst flying this aircraft,
during April and May 1941.

Operation Merkur was the code name given to the German invasion of
Crete, in May 1941. The use of paratroopers would be central to the
success of the operation to take this Greek island and extensive use
was made of the venerable old Junkers Ju-52 transport aircraft. Much
loved by the troops it carried, the Ju-52 was vulnerable to attack from
both ground and air and although Crete eventually fell to German
forces, it was to prove a costly operation in terms of casualties. Ju-52
4U+NH operated during the attack on Crete, delivering German
paratroopers to one of four strategic targets on the island. Despite
coming under significant defensive fire, the aircraft survived the
invasion of Crete and went on to serve in North Africa.

The aircrew of Bomber Command made a significant contribution to
the war effort in WWII and were to pay a heavy price for their
devotion to duty. Arguably the aircraft that best illustrates their
contribution and the men who sadly paid the ultimate price is Avro
Lancaster ED888 PM-M2 ‘Mike Squared’. This magnificent aircraft
completed an astonishing 140 bombing missions – the most flown
by any Lancaster in WWII. Known as ‘The Mother of Them All’, this
Lancaster managed to survive the war, shooting down two Luftwaffe
fighters in the process. Avro Lancaster ED888 was the most prolific
of the ‘Ton-up’ Lancasters and is a fitting way to mark the 75th
anniversary of the first flight of Avro’s most famous bomber.

Direct interference from senior military commanders severely
restricted the effectiveness of the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet, as they
procrastinated about whether it should be used as a fighter, or a
bomber. Luftwaffe pilot Franz Gapp perfectly illustrated this
problem - a highly decorated bomber pilot, who flew more than
400 missions, mainly in the Ju-88 fighter-bomber, Gapp transferred
to an Me 262 attack unit, where it was hoped the speed of the new
jet would see significant strategic bombing successes. Heavy losses
and a shortage of experienced pilots dictated that surviving Me
262 bomber units were amalgamated into ad hoc fighter units,
required to defend the Reich against Allied air attacks - despite his
bombing credentials, Gapp went on to score a number of victories
against US heavy bombers. On 7th May 1945, Gapp flew his
Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter towards the west, in an attempt to
avoid capture by advancing Soviet forces. He crash-landed his jet
into a newly ploughed field near Podersam (Saaz), before
destroying his aircraft, thus denying its use by Allied forces.

The 367th Fighter Group arrived in England in April 1944, and
having trained on single engine fighters, they were expecting to find
Mustangs waiting for them at RAF Stoney Cross – the twin engine
P-38 Lightning proved to be something of a surprise. Following a
period of re-training, the 367th were sent into battle and
immediately began to make their mark. Laurence ‘Scrappy’ Blumer
and his P-38 Lightning ‘Scrapiron IV’ earned the title ‘the fastest ace
in a day’ and the award of a Distinguished Service Cross, for
combat actions he was involved in, on 25th August 1944. Joining
an already savage dogfight, Blumer shot down two FW190 fighters
on his first pass and a further three within the next fifteen minutes,
before the enemy fighters ran for cover. During this engagement, the
Luftwaffe lost 25 aircraft destroyed, one probably destroyed and a
further 17 suffering damage – by any standards, a mauling by pilots
of the Fork-tailed devil.

As Allied forces closed on Germany from all sides and the war in
Europe was coming to an end, there was one thing that frightened
German servicemen more than anything else – capture by the Red
Army. Luftwaffe pilot Eugen Lorcher had no intention of letting this
happen and on the evening of 8th May, he fuelled up his Focke
Wulf and prepared to escape to the west. Taking off from their
home airfield in the Czech Republic, Lorcher had also bundled his
fiancée into the radio compartment of the aircraft and they made
their bid for relative safety. The aircraft was flying at very low level,
to avoid being shot down by Allied fighters, but Lorcher feared
destruction at any moment, as they were taking ground fire and in
danger of simply striking the ground. Gaining height at the last
moment, in an attempt to find a suitable landing spot, the Focke
Wulf belly-landed in a field near the parental home of Lorcher
– both he and his future wife walked away from this incredible
incident, with their war finally over.

As far as WWII Bomber Command aircraft nose artwork is concerned, Handley Page Halifax VII PN230 ‘Vicky the Vicious Virgin’ has to be considered as
one of the most elaborate of the war. The distinctive artwork was created by bomb aimer Bert ‘Scratch’ Evans, when he was posted to No.408 ‘Goose’
(RCAF) Squadron, at Linton-on-Ouse and assigned to Halifax PN230. The name ‘Vicky the Vicious Virgin’ was painted on both sides of the aircraft, with an
additional pin-up artwork added to the port side of the fuselage. Each crew station also carried their respective nickname painted on the fuselage, with pilot
Ron Craven earning the unfortunate title of ‘The dirty old man’. Despite this light-hearted artistic distraction, this crew went on to complete 21 missions over
enemy territory, the last 13 of which were in ‘Vicky’.

At the start of the Korean War, significant numbers of Mustang
fighters were available to the USAF, although most were now
serving with Air National Guard units. Now designated F-51D, the
Mustang was no longer the premier fighter aircraft it was in WWII,
due to the advent of jet technology, but it was still a highly capable
long-range strike aircraft. As a close air support aircraft, the Korean
War Mustang dropped more napalm and fired more rockets than
any other aircraft involved in the conflict, as it served with four air
forces in support of United Nations. It was also involved in some of
the first spiralling dogfights with the new Soviet MiG-15 jet fighter.
Highly susceptible to the latest anti-aircraft defences, many close air
support Mustangs were lost during the Korean conflict.

As its history was very much connected to British requirements, it is
no surprise that the Mustang was used extensively by the Royal Air
Force during WWII, from the early Allison powered Mustang I, to
the Dallas produced, Packard Merlin powered IVa. The final victory
for a WWII RAF Mustang belonged to Norwegian ace Werner
Christie, who was flying his personal machine KH790. Following the
conclusion of a successful bomber escort mission over Germany,
Christie led his Mustangs in search of Luftwaffe fighters. Flying
above Finow airfield, he noticed a flight of Fw 190s and
immediately dived to attack. His first burst of fire caught the wing of
an unsuspecting Focke Wulf, blowing half of the wing off and
sending the fighter spiralling into the ground. This would be
Christie’s eleventh and final victory of the war.

As the only British built Mach 2 capable fighter, the BAC Lightning
spent the Cold War years being scrambled to challenge Soviet Tu-95
‘Bear’ bombers, which regularly encroached into British airspace. A
highly capable interceptor aircraft, the Lightning possessed both
blistering speed and spectacular acceleration and is regarded as
perhaps the most enigmatic jet aircraft to ever serve with the Royal
Air Force. XR770 first flew in 1966 and famously appeared at that
years Farnborough Airshow, wearing Royal Saudi Air Force colours,
where it flew ten demonstration flights. In the years to follow, this
famous aircraft went on to serve with No.74 ‘Tigers’ and No.56
‘Firebirds’ Squadrons, before ending its service life with the last
Lightning fighters at No.5 Squadron at RAF Binbrook. Lightning
XR770 is now preserved at RAF Waddington, wearing distinctive
RAF No.5 Squadron red spine and tail colours and was the subject
of a previous Aviation Archive release (AA32311).

Westland Lynx HAS 3 ICE XZ246 (434/EE) is one of a number of
helicopters, which have served on board Antarctic survey and ice
patrol vessel HMS Endurance, in particularly challenging conditions.
For this specific role, some of the equipment usually found on Royal
Navy Lynx aircraft was removed, but the reliable Lynx proved to be
essential in the effective polar operations of Endurance. Two ice
modified Lynx aircraft were usually carried on board HMS
Endurance, at any one time.

The RAF aircraft that took part in the 1991 Gulf War are the subject
of great interest and continue to captivate modellers and collectors
alike. Painted in a distinctive desert pink camouflage over-wash,
PANAVIA Tornado GR.1 ZA447/EA carries attractive nose art
decoration, which was a feature of many of the Gulf War serving
RAF aircraft. Carrying the name ‘MiG Eater’, complete with
fearsome shark teeth artwork, this aircraft was thought to have
destroyed an Iraqi Air Force MiG-29 fighter (hence the name),
whilst completing an airfield denial mission, over Iraq. It was later
discovered that it was actually a Mirage F.1, but ZA447 was one of
the busiest Tornados over the Gulf, completing 40 combat missions
for coalition air forces. It later went on to be one of the star exhibits
at the 1991 Mildenhall Air Fete.

Even though it was in the twilight of its service career, the Buccaneer
was called upon to take part in the 1991 Gulf War, but only at the
eleventh hour. Tornado and Jaguar crews were carrying out
low-level, interdiction strike missions against enemy targets, but the
effectiveness of Iraqi anti-aircraft fire resulted in these sorties having
to be carried out at a higher level, which reduced their
effectiveness. The RAF needed to improve the standard of its
precision bombing and the Buccaneer had the ability to laser target
mark – twelve aircraft were rushed to the gulf. The ‘Sky Pirates’ were
in the war and making a valuable contribution to the success of
Operation Granby. Displaying the individual artwork associated
with many RAF Gulf War aircraft, XW533 ‘Miss Jolly Roger’
showed that sometimes, older aircraft can show the new boys how
the job should be done.

Royal Air Force Jaguars from Coltishall were amongst the first British aircraft to arrive in the Gulf, in support of Operation Granby in 1991. Wearing the
distinctive desert pink camouflage over-wash, a number of the aircraft also benefitted from the addition of individual nose artwork, showcasing the artistic
talents of RAF personnel. Jaguar XZ356/N carried the nose artwork ‘Mary Rose’, which included the image of a rather sinister looking sea witch. This
aircraft was to see extensive action during her Gulf deployment, completing 33 combat missions against strategic Iraqi military targets. On return to the
UK, XZ356 was yet another RAF Gulf War aircraft present at the 1991 Mildenhall Air Fete. 2016 will see the RAF commemorating the 25th anniversary of
their contribution to Operation Granby.

The 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment formed 29 Independent Infantry Brigade Group fighting in the
Korean War from December 1950 under the command of the United Nations; Land Rovers were used in
support roles. By April 1951, 29 Brigade, including the Glosters, were deployed
north of Seoul along the undulating southern bank of the Imjin River.
On 22nd April the Chinese army attacked and, although the territory was
ideally suited to defence, the UN troops were thinly spread and
outnumbered by more than five to one. The ensuing fierce battle
lasted three days during which the Glosters, completely
surrounded, heroically held their position on Hill 235 (‘Gloster
Hill’) against overwhelming odds. On April 25th, they had
slowed up and weakened the advancing Chinese 63rd
Army sufficiently for UN troops to reposition and
successfully defend Seoul.
Of the 1,091 British soldiers killed, wounded or
missing, 620 were Glosters. Of those, 520 were
taken prisoner, 34 of who died in captivity and 59
were killed in action. Chinese casualties over the
entire battle were approximately 10,000 soldiers.
On 8th May 1951, by order of US President Harry
S. Truman, the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment
were presented with the United States’ Distinguished
Unit Citation for outstanding performance of duty and
extraordinary heroism.

Triumph TR250 Signal Red
Triumph produced a new body for the TR3A chassis in 1961, which became
the TR4, then in 1965 a new chassis, the TR4A; now only the engine needed
updating! Thus in 1967 the TR5/TR250 was announced featuring a new
2.5-litre straight-six. The TR250 was a TR5 for the US market and used
Triumph-designed Zenith-Stromberg carburettors because the Lucas PI
system on the more powerful European TR5 couldn’t meet
America’s ‘smog’ laws. The TR250 modelled
was produced at Canley in July 1967 and
purchased new by Robert Curtis Boldi of
Elcajon, San Diego, California, who kept it
until it was repatriated in 1991. It was then
acquired by Denis Pattrick from Lincolnshire
who continues to enjoy it.

Triumph Stag Mk2 Magenta
Triumph announced the Mk2 Stag in February 1973, in a bid to inject fresh sales
impetus to their almost three year old model. The changes addressed many of the
Mk1’s shortcomings and included a higher compression engine which ran
more smoothly, a smaller steering wheel to provide more ‘feel’ and an
improved alternator. Cosmetically Mk2s were instantly recognisable
by their matt black sills and tail panels, twin coachlines and
a black background to the leaping ‘STAG’ badge.

Mk2 and were trumpeted as being
specially designed for the Stag
although they later appeared on
the 2500S saloon.

Ford Anglia 1200 Super Platinum Grey and Ermine White
The Anglia modelled is remarkably original and has covered just 16,000 miles
since being registered to Mr George Irwin Smith on 1st May 1964, by
Dinnages of Wivelsfield Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex; the
company having been the Ford Main Dealers for this area from
1956 to the present day. Current owner Colin Moir,
a time-served Ford mechanic who runs his
own garage business in Aberdeenshire,
saw the car at the 2013 NEC Classic Car
Show Silverstone Auctions’ sale and,
having wanted one when he was a Ford
apprentice, purchased it on impulse. He
then had to fly back to Scotland, pick up
his low-loader, and drive back to
Birmingham to pick it up!

Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico Daytona Yellow
The Mexico modelled was first registered on 6th March 1972, making it one
of the last to have the rear under-floor stone guard, boot-mounted battery
and remote brake servo. It was part of a batch of ten cars registered in
sequence and then retained by Ford for publicity work and carries a
‘PVX’ number plate; initials which appeared on many AVO or
Boreham-built competition and press cars as PV was the
identification code for the East Ipswich registration
office. It featured the ‘Custom Pack’ which
included, carpet, centre console and
Contour bucket seats. Unusually it was
also fitted from new with expensive
optional Minilite wheels and the Cibie
lamp pack, both of which are
reproduced here.

Ford Capri Mk1 1600GT XLR Fern Green Metallic
The XLR modelled was registered new to Ford Motor Company, Dagenham
on 6th October 1969 for publicity work. It was then sold for £973, a
‘discounted price’, on 20th November 1969 to Mr C Gillott of Dartford.
He covered over 60,000 miles and kept it until April 1998 when
it was sold to Ian Bell of Cumbernauld, who worked on it but
rarely used it.
In 2009 new owner Mitch Hughes from Oban,
re-commissioned it and used it regularly. Since
mid 2015 it’s been owned and partially
restored by Ford enthusiasts Petrina and
Peter Westaway, from Devon, as part of
their small collection.

Ford Cortina Mk3 2000 GXL ‘Swampy’, Sapphire Blue
The GXL modelled was made at Dagenham in October 1971, a year after the
Mk3 Cortina’s launch. It was briefly displayed at Ford dealers Doe Motors,
Maldon, Essex before being registered in November 1971 when
purchased by Neil Renwick, whose family kept the car after his death
in 2008. In 2011, Southport-based Cortina enthusiast Pete
Crompton saw a picture of it on the net sitting in a
waterlogged field in Essex (hence nickname
‘Swampy’), where it had been for twenty-four
years and scoured Google Earth until
he’d fathomed its location. The original
owner’s brother, Grahame, then agreed
to sell Pete the car, realising he
seriously intended to restore this rare
but very rusty Cortina.

Different countries require different specifications and in South Africa, where,
in the mid-1970s huge distances were still covered on un-made roads, Ford’s
Port Elizabeth-built Cortina MkIV was offered with the 3-litre ‘Essex’ V6
as the performance orientated 3000S, which featured stiffer
suspension, a manual gearbox and low profile tyres. The 3000S
modelled was first registered to Mr J. Stoneham of Kempton
Park, SA, in 1977 as BJV 887T. It is believed he
was an expatriate British citizen who
returned to Britain in June 1985 and
shipped it home with him.
Subsequently Ireland-based
enthusiast Richard Norton owned
the car and he sold it to current
custodian Kevin Turner from Kent in
November 2012.

Ford enthusiast and chairman of the ‘Ford Granada MK1 & Mk2 Drivers Guild’,
Bryan Stone, an HGV driver from Kent, purchased the Granada modelled in
late 1989. It was then just over six years old having been first registered
on 1st August 1983 by Ford dealers Coulters of Market Place,
Evesham, Worcestershire; the first owner being a bank manager
who had it as his company car for three years. Bryan
purchased the car from a farmer, it was
filthy, covered in farm muck, had a
flat battery and flat tyres but he felt it
was ‘right’ as soon as he sat in it,
parted with £2700, and has been
gradually improving it since.

Ford Fiesta Mk1 ‘Festival’ Prairie Yellow
The ‘Fiesta Festival’ was a Special Edition model, launched in 1980, which was
based on either the 950cc or 1100cc models and featured prominent
side-stripes and Festival badging on the tailgate. Dinkar Jhalera from
Buckinghamshire purchased his Fiesta Festival new in October 1980
from Ford main dealers Godfrey Davies of Neasden, London, and
has kept the car, which has now covered approximately
75,000 miles. He had it rust-proofed by Ziebart
immediately after purchase and, as per the firm’s
warranty conditions, Zeibart steam cleaned and
reapplied their antirust treatment every two years
until their 10 year anti-corrosion guarantee
expired. As a result the car has remained in very
good original condition.

Ford Escort Mk3 XR3 Caspian Blue
Ford created a new performance badge in November 1980 when they
launched the XR3, the first of what became a range of XRs. The example
modelled was built in September 1982, and registered in October to Mr
I.C.W. Hulson by Ford dealers Appleyards in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Mr J.W. Hockenhull acquired it in 1985, used it until 1993 then
placed it in dry-storage with 101,000 miles showing. It
was unearthed in 2008 and listed on eBay. XR

since childhood was the winning bidder
and he continues to enjoy his first, and

Gladys Hobro bought XLL 27 new in 1959 and kept it until June 1986 but only
used it when she and her family returned home to Bognor Regis from
Khartoum, Sudan, where they were based. Second owner, Chichester-based
David Gallimore, never started his intended restoration
and offered the 30,041 mile car for sale in 2011. It was
purchased, in the original but very rusty state
modelled here, by three Mini enthusiasts from
Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, Richard Bremner, Bryan
Smart and Robert Lancaster-Gaye. In 2012, having
proved the car’s production history, significance
and originality, they consigned it, unrestored, to
Bonham’s auctioneers. They’d initially feared losing
their £10,000 investment so were amazed when it
sold for £40,250.

Built on 4th May 1965, the Morris Cooper modelled was ordered by BMC
dealers Wadhams Limited of Chichester and registered on 12th May
1965, to first owner Mr Chris Gow. In 2011, Nuneaton-based
engineer Sam Goodwin purchased the by then dismantled car as
a rusty bodyshell and boxes of parts. He embarked on a
supremely detailed restoration, which included
checking original drawings to ensure spot-welds and
panel joints were done exactly as factory, and placed
the completed car in the Silverstone Auctions’ sale of
July 2013. It was purchased by Richard Wright from
Surrey, Chairman of Caffyns plc; a company which
were, during the 1960s, one of the world’s largest
distributors of Morris cars.

Jaguar and the leaper device are
trademarks owned and licensed
by Jaguar Land Rover Limited
Jaguar’s MD and founding father Sir William Lyons orchestrated the purchase
of Daimler from the BSA group by Jaguar Cars in May 1960. Thereafter,
following BMC’s badge engineering lead, Jaguar produced a Daimler
version of their world beating XJ6 which featured Daimler’s classic
fluted grille and different trim. Combined production of the
XJ-based Daimler models in Series 1 and 2 form was
45,413, roughly a quarter of the type’s entire
output, and the Daimler sold to buyers
who might have found a Jaguar
just a little gauche in
comparison. The revival of
Daimler’s classic ‘Double-Six’
badge when the XJ12 was
announced in 1972 took
Jaguar Cars into competition
with Rolls-Royce and
Mercedes-Benz.

Austin Allegro Series 2 1500 Special Reynard Metallic
The Allegro modelled was originally purchased from BL dealers Heartlands of
Kidlington, Oxfordshire, on 1st February 1977, by Mr J Allen. He kept it for
over twenty years and covered a low annual mileage. In 2010 it was
acquired by Allegro enthusiast Ian Cole who replaced the damaged
engine with one from a similar car and sold it, reluctantly, in 2012.
It is now owned by Allegro Club International member John
Howard from Warwickshire, who saw the car on eBay
and, having once owned a Mini in the same
colour, fell in love and bought it on impulse.
It has still only covered around 50,000miles
and remains in very good, basically
original, condition.

After the Spa-Sofia-Liege rally ended in 1964 due to safety concerns
about racing on public roads the event moved to the Nürburgring. The
resulting non-stop 84-hour regularity rally was perfect for the robust
reliable MGB; meticulously prepared by BMC’s Abingdon-based
Competitions Department. Two MGBs entered and both
crashed badly on the same corner in the opening
laps, their drivers caught out by loose-chippings.
However, both were nursed to the pits where the
ingenuity of Den Green’s team of mechanics got
them back on track. The more exotic cars
gradually failed leaving the metronomic MGs
first and second at 72 hours. The Poole/Enever
car broke a halfshaft in hour-79 but GRX 307D
continued to victory.

Vauxhall Carlton 2.6Li West Mercia Constabulary
Vauxhall’s UK Special Vehicle Operations department in Worcester created this
Mk2 Carlton demonstrator for Police forces to test in 2.6-litre form. However,
although it was used on active duty by West Mercia Constabulary and at
least three other forces, no replicas were purchased. This was because
the Police generally preferred the more powerful and commodious
Senator 3.0i, especially in its later 24v form, which although it
was based on the same floorpan and mechanical
components set as the Carlton was slightly more
expensive. The distinctive ‘Tiger-Stripe’ livery on this
car was standard for West Mercia Constabulary
in the early 1990s and remained on the car
even when it served evaluation duties with
other forces.

well-known green and cream livery of Yorkshire
Rider in order to mark the twentieth anniversary
since their buses were last operating. The bus
will operate on routes across Leeds, and has
been named after Brian who sadly passed away

Back in 1924, the first Glasgow Corporation
Tramways (GCT) motorbuses were ordered to
cover services in Coatbridge and Airdrie while
road maintenance was being carried out to the
tramway service. Soon after, motorbuses
became a regular sight in Glasgow with the first
double decker buses being ordered by the GCT
in 1928. The livery was the same as the single
deckers but with the addition of apple green for
the panels between the upper and lower deck
windows, however in 1959 it was simplified to
aid spray painting. Shown here in the updated
yellow and green livery the model also features
well known adverts for Bell’s Scotch Whiskey
and Swan Matches.

trams back in 1903 and continued to

replaced with trolleybuses, with buses

In 1986, to comply with the Transport
Act 1985 the assets of Ipswich
Corporation were transferred to what
is now known as Ipswich Buses. Built
by the Associated Equipment Company
between 1954 and 1969 – when the
last of them entered serviced, the
Regent V was a front-engined double
decker bus and was used extensively
by bus companies around Britain at the
time including by Ipswich Corporation.

Austin Mini Mk1 Cooper S Surf Blue
When launched in 1959, designer Alec Issigonis’ Mini
revolutionised the automotive industry by pioneering the mass
production of front-wheel-drive transverse-engine cars. Then
Formula 1 World Champion team owner John Cooper, a friend
of Issigonis, immediately saw its nimble handling as an
opportunity to create a powerful competition car and, after
building a prototype, persuaded BMC’s bosses to produce it.
It was launched in 1961, started winning races and rallies
immediately, and became the cool must have car of the
1960s, selling in much larger numbers than initially
envisaged. The Cooper S added more power and the
example modelled here was a BMC press car tested, with
enthusiasm, by Autosport magazine in August 1963.

Morris Minor 1000 Highway Yellow
The Morris Minor was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show,
Britain’s first since the cessation of hostilities, alongside another
legend the Jaguar XK120. In its original form it used a 918cc
sidevalve engine and its headlights were mounted low in the
grille. Foreign market legislation forced the lights up into pods
on the wings in 1951 and then, when Morris Motors merged
with Austin in 1952 to create BMC, the Minor received the
Austin-designed 803cc A-Series engine. This was
updated to create the ‘single screen’ Minor 1000 in
1956. The Minor was Alec Issigonis’ first complete car
design and possessed extremely surefooted handling
which was many years ahead of its competitors.

Ford were determined to win the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally
and, after extensive reconnaissance of the arduous 16,000 mile route,
works driver Roger Clark suggested they use heavy-duty rally Escorts
with simple Cortina 1600GT engines in place of the usual Lotus
twin-cams; reliability being more important than performance. It
worked, Hannu Mikkola and Gunnar Palm won in ‘FEV 1H ‘
and, quick to see the value of the publicity, Ford
launched the Mexico as a production replica
of the winner using their rally-proven Type-49
bodyshell and crossflow engine. Built at Ford’s
Advanced Vehicle Operations facility,
Ockendon, Essex, it was launched in 1970 at
£1150, making it the affordable performance
car of its era.

In October 1963 Rover announced their compact 2000 model, often
known colloquially by its codename P6. It was an all-new design
featuring a unit-construction base skeleton covered by bolt-on body
panels, independent front suspension using horizontal coil springs, de
Dion rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, giving it
class-leading dynamics. Its radical exterior and
interior styling was by David Bache and
its pioneering passenger safety-cell
contributed to it becoming the first
ever ‘European Car of The Year’ in
1964. Rover’s General-Motors derived
all-aluminium V8 was offered as a more
powerful option in April 1968, finally
giving the P6 the power its chassis had

vans through to 44 tonne articulated curtain-sided and refrigerated
vehicles, H.E. Payne specialises in transporting goods from ambient,
chilled and frozen temperature ranges. The Company’s roots date
back to 1938 when Harry Edward Payne began as a coal merchant
working a Morris Commercial 30cwt. Over the years the Company

Founded in 1964 by brothers David and James, McGawn Bros began making wrought iron gates in a garden shed in Ayr. In 1968, in need of a larger
premises, it moved to a yard in Maybole and bought its first unit and trailer – McGawn Bros was branching out into the world of haulage! Its unit was used
to haul timber from Argyll to Workington for a saw mill and by 1975 its fleet had grown to six vehicles. McGawn Bros continues to operate from its two
locations in Maybole.
