G UI D E TO TH E ERNEST B R A D B U R Y ARC HI V E 1969 "The music..seemed like the afterglow o f a particularly brilliant sunset".. the blossoming beautiful, even as it decays and that ghostly whisper, drained o f all colour like some long-pressed and forgotten flower." J hope it is not entirely prejudice which causes me to commend such passages in this year's archive. May I further commend my husband's writing on a Carnpoli recital (25.9), his writing on Quintets (13.11), Barbirolli's last Bradford concert (22.12) and his report on Muggeridge's Edinburgh Address (25.8). Historically, an important item is the Fischer/Furtwangler concert recorded live in Berlin in 1942. His Recent Records reviews seem particularly illuminating this o f releases. I have only carbons to hand o f such articles February, 26th Septem ber and 10th Decem ber. Should you from the Yorkshire Post, please ask the librarian. A lso too Festival notice o f which I have only a carbon and which was year., never a recital appearing on 14th require photocopies for one Edinburgh published on 29.8.. The magazine O P E R A published his aiticte~nr'> the- Partafciwe -Qper-a Group in August ( Page 738'!: 1 enclose mv husband V. carbon..— In May this magazine..also published ( pj>.391 3) his--rev iew o f Joubef i ’s Under W e stern Eyes.— Should the Brerth-e-fte-ft-nat haw, this magazine the original may be seen a n d -copied -a-t the-V ictoria Library—Krf) •Buckm gb aiTi Palace -Road, Lonrkin, SW1W 9UD (adjoining the Coach Sia+km). A t the time o f writing 1 have neither originals nor carbons for several Harrogate Festival notices in the Yorkshire Post, i f they are not inserted when you read this please ask the librarian as the Brotherton holds the Yorkshire Post. They are:12th August: A n accomplished vocal alliance and Talent in the m orning (page 3) 13th August: Disciplined music o f the future and Soprano o f prom ise (page 3) 14th August: Purcell, Britten & Pears join forces and Student triumph (p age 3) 15th August: Bartók raises recital’s stature and Paul Crossley the a s to n is h in g ^ p ^ y 3 ) 16th August: Festival reaches for a moon-man and The Fam iliar Friends and M oscow-bound C ellist (a ll page 3). T h ere is also missing M alcolm W illiam s’ Lucky-Peter’s Journey, reviewed 20th D ecem ber (page 2) and University leads music making 11.8. (page 3). Once again, I apologise for spelling differentials ( I use those quoted in texts), for omitting librettists, designers and producers and reviews o f non-musical material. The latter are included, as at the Edinburgh Festival, for instance, but not listed. I also apologise for omitting a singer's range when 1 am not clear about this., and for ail other errors and omissions. Please bring any such to the attention o f the librarian for the benefit o f others. I f venues are not in the text they are not listed, nor are works without composers’ names nor composers without specific works, excepting in the Miscellaneous section which it is recommended is perused first. M M denotes the Music and Musicians column, R R Recent Records (Yorkshire Post); M M Magazine is Music and Musicians magazine. A ll items are from the Yorkshire Post unless otherwise stated.
