FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Donors and Friends,
In each of our lives, we have life-altering
moments that in reminiscence we can fit
together like the patch-work pieces of the
beautiful quilts that adorn this edition of
Greater Resources. These moments in our lives
are both memorable and transformational.
When we got our first job, for example, or
when we got married, or when we lost a loved
one, or when our children or grand-children
were born. What I remember that was so important about those moments in my
life were the people around me who shared each milestone.
Hospitals are one of the places where we are brought face to face with the realities of life, both occasions for joy and sorrow. Like quilts, hospitals are there
when you come together with family, friends and loved ones to make the journey a bit easier. Your shared experiences when you are at a hospital are usually
one of those memorable moments that, like a quilt, make up the fabric of our
lives. It is doctors and nurses who care about your challenges and know what to
do to make you feel better. It is the equipment that can diagnose your condition so that your treatment is the best. It is the medicine that researchers have
developed to help your body fight off infection or disease.
I have had the pleasure of serving as Chair of the GBMC Foundation board for
the last two years. During that time, donors and friends like you have taken
the time to make charitable investments, to send us a piece of your fabric, or
give us time, treasure and talent to help make our hospital grow into a beautiful
Baltimore Album quilt, if you will. It is here when you need it, and it provides
warmth, comfort and caring for thousands of your neighbors every year.
Thank you for making a commitment to GBMC and continuing to make annual gifts and putting the hospital in your estate plan. People will always need
quilts and hospitals to bring comfort during the biggest moments in their lives.

Baltimore Traditions
For centuries, women have come together to share, support, and care in ways that
are unique to them. Often, friends would gather to stitch quilts that would keep
their loved ones warm on cold nights. To the ladies of mid-1800 Baltimore, quilts
became more than a cover against the damp, chilly Maryland winters – their
stitching evolved into an art form that became known as the “Baltimore Album
Quilt”. These quilts were distinguished by their meticulously appliquéd designs of
flowers, baskets and intricate borders. Quilters often included favorite verses and
signatures and sewed the appliquéd blocks into “albums”. The use of red, blue,
gold and green fabrics was also common in these blocks.
They became known as “Baltimore Album Quilts” and were often given as gifts on
special occasions. Many have survived in excellent condition and are featured today
in special exhibits at local museums, retaining a special place in Baltimore history.
Another momentous event in the lives of Baltimore’s women occurred in 1872,
when a new hospital, named The Hospital for the Women of Maryland, of
Baltimore City, opened its doors. The philosophy of this unique institution-The
Patient Always Comes First - is a tradition that endures even as the hospital
has changed. The original hospital eventually merged with another excellent
healthcare institution – The Presbyterian Eye, Ear and Throat Charity Hospital
to become Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Providing Baltimore’s women
with the highest quality of medical service combined with compassionate care
continues as a great Baltimore tradition.
The Baltimore Album Quilt and the beautiful quilt patterns featured throughout
this issue were designed and stitched by Baltimore quilter, quilt designer and
teacher, Mimi Dietrich. In 1981, Ms. Dietrich, developed a new love for the
colors, appliqué techniques and unique patterns of the Baltimore Album Quilts
while attending a special exhibit of many of the original quilts at The Baltimore
Museum of Art.
Ms. Dietrich has continued to share her love of Baltimore Album quilts for over
27 years both as a teacher of the beautiful appliqué techniques that made Baltimore’s
Album Quilts unique and treasured, and through her books – Baltimore Basics,
Album Quilts from Start to Finish and Baltimore Bouquets. We are grateful to
her for preserving an important Baltimore art form, inspiring others through
her teaching and, for so generously sharing her beautiful designs and appliqué
in this GBMC publication.
We are honored to celebrate this unique Baltimore tradition while thanking our
donors for helping GBMC continue its own tradition of quality healthcare in
the community.

working environment. I particularly appreciate the way the
family is involved with the choices we make in how to use
the Dr. Shi-Shung Huang Memorial Fund, showing their
commitment to a responsible, meaningful use of this gift.
I also enjoy having an ongoing dialogue with the Huang
family about how Pediatrics is evolving at GBMC, and
having the opportunity to communicate our thanks for
their ongoing and generous support.”

It is with deep gratitude and respect that GBMC recognizes the generous support of the Huang Family through
the Dr. Shi-Shung Huang Memorial Fund.
Dr. Huang is a beloved figure in the history of GBMC
for his deep commitment to children and family health.
Dr. Huang served as Medical Director of The Weinberg
Community Health Center (Baltimore, Maryland) from
the Center’s opening in 1966 until his retirement in 1993.
Upon his passing, the Huang family committed to continuing
his legacy through the Dr. Shi-Shung Huang Memorial
Fund, and since 2007 these funds have supported children
and family health at the GBMC Pediatrics Department,
which provides medical care to infants, children and
adolescents.
Pediatric patient volume has tripled at GBMC since the
Pediatric Emergency Department opened in 2004, making
the impact of this gift even more important. Dr. Melissa
Sparrow, Clinical Director of Pediatric Inpatient and
Emergency Services, has a wonderful working relationship
with the family and their engagement with this memorial
gift. “Dr. Huang and his family’s generosity affects our life
every day on the Pediatric Unit by providing us with the
medical equipment and training we need to do our job,
and also with enhancing the aesthetic components of our
GBMC pediatric patients and their family members are
touched by the Dr. Shi-Shung Huang Memorial Fund
each and every day. A warm and inviting environment
specifically designed for children, with twinkling lights, an
underworld mural that engages the imagination, and with
a playroom filled with activities, books, mobiles and toys
to ease any pain and anxiety. A healing environment with
critical medical equipment, including vital sign monitors,

Bili lights, and the very latest and safest pediatric stretchercribs and bassinets. A healthcare environment that provides Pediatric Advanced Life Support classes throughout
the hospital to ensure that all medical staff that may come
in contact with a pediatric patient are well trained.
A place where families trust their children to get the very
best medical care thanks to the generous support of the
Huang Family, a philanthropic family that for over four
decades has supported high quality medical care for children and families in our community and at GBMC.

Sana and Andy Brooks are like many
other couples whose relationship with
GBMC began with the birth of their
sons, now 5 and 2. The boys have
seen their share of GBMC physicians
through emergency room visits for
bumps, bruises, asthma attacks and
stitches.
Dr. Timothy Doran, Chairman of Pediatrics at GBMC is thrilled to be part
of this important Council, along with
his colleagues, Dr. Victor Khouzami,
Chairman of Obstetrics and Director
of Women’s and Newborn Services, and
Dr. Howard Birenbaum, Director of
the Division of Neonatology.
Sana has also sought out GBMC for
her own care and has been impressed
with the focus on women’s health care.
So, she did not hesitate to join the new
Parents’ Advisory Council formed in
June 2008 and to become its first chair.
According to Dr. Doran, “The Parents’
Advisory Council provides the Department of Pediatrics with a valuable
perspective on the care of our tiniest
patients: the family view. We appreciate
the advice and work of this dedicated
group of parents in helping us improve
the experience of all families at GBMC.”
Members of the new Parents’ Advisory
Council are true believers in the physicians,
nurses, and staff who make GBMC a
great hospital. They have volunteered
to be advocates, serve as ambassadors in
the community, help with fundraising
events, and personally support GBMC.
This special group of volunteers meets
4 times a year to learn about services in
the hospital, provide feedback from a
parents’ perspective, and to ask questions.
“I have really enjoyed being part of this
new council and feeling like I know
first-hand about important services that
can benefit my family” says Sana Brooks.
Catherine Passano McDonnell echoes
this sentiment by reporting that “I have
had three children at GBMC and I
did not know there was an emergency
room specifically for children staffed
by pediatric physicians and nurses.
Obviously, no one wants to be in the
emergency room with their child, but
Seth and I would certainly bring our
girls to GBMC.”

Host Annual Thank You Dinner
The beautiful Towson home of Dr. Ronald and Lissen
Tutrone provided the perfect setting for the GBMC
Foundation’s annual Virginia Sherwood Council/
William A. & Jarnetta Kroh Society Dinner that was
held on September 8, 2008.
Contributors to The Virginia Sherwood Council/
William A. & Jarnetta Kroh include many individuals,
businesses and foundations whose annual gifts of $2,500
or more enabled GBMC and Gilchrist Hospice Care to
provide the most up-to-date medical care and medical
technology to more than 100,000 patients last year.

On Sunday, April 13, 2008, GBMC physicians, Dr. Lauren
Schnaper, Dr. Scott Maizel, Dr. H. Alexander Munitz and
Dr. Judy Destouet, of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman
Comprehensive Breast Care Center, were honored by the
Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation for their outstanding
work in the fight against breast cancer.
The evening of great food and auctions raised $55,000 for
the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast
Care Center at GBMC, which was used to purchase a new
state of the art stereo-tactic breast biopsy table.
The Sandra & Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast
Care Center offers a dedicated, multidisciplinary breast
care program with a wide range of services that includes
digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsies and
ultrasound exams by skilled radiologists and breast surgeons.

1.5 Mile Fun Run benefiting the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at
GBMC. This popular event is made

GBMC’S 2008 Golf Classic –
A “Hole in One” Fundraiser
GBMC’s 20th Annual GBMC Golf Classic attracted more than 200 golfers,
40 corporate sponsors and raised $235,000! In the 20 years since the first
golfer teed off, the event has raised over $1.25 million in proceeds to provide
continuing education to GBMC’s medical staff and nurses and benefits the
Middendorf Consumer Health Library & John E. Savage Medical Library.

Since the founding of the Elizabeth
Duncan Yaggy Society in 1999, hundreds of loyal GBMC supporters have
become members by making a provision in their estate plans. According
to GBMC Foundation President,
Douglas G. Smith, the popularity
of the Society is growing, “In this
difficult economy, our most committed donors are looking for alternative
ways to give back to the hospital that
has done so much for our community
and their families.”
Recently, the GBMC Foundation
recognized four of GBMC’s most
dedicated supporters – individuals who
have made generous contributions to
advance the medical center’s vision of
health, healing and hope, and who are
also guaranteeing the future excellence
and financial well-being of your
community hospital through estate
planning.
The Civilettis, Mr. Keelty and the
Krohs have all provided for GBMC
in their estate plans in one of these
ways: a provision in their will, by
designating GBMC as the beneficiary
of their retirement plan (IRA or 401(k)
or life insurance policy or by giving to
the hospital through a charitable gift
annuity or charitable trust.
