His collection includes many different kinds of rhododendrons, giving us a unique opportunity to assess garden performance as well as beauty. There are many excellent varieties available but there is room for improvement on many fronts. Colors such as deep yellows, oranges and reds are needed, desired and possible. Disease-resistant and heat-tolerant plants with more diverse colors are in the pipeline. Beautiful and distinctive foliage—whether variegated, extra large or small, rounded, very narrow and even purple leaves—can add exciting texture and color to the garden all year. Longtime RareFind employee Ron Rabideau has been hybridizing rhododendrons for nearly 30 years, with ‘Absolute Citron’ his best known introduction so far. It’s been said that perhaps only one out of 10,000 new seedlings is worthy of introducing, making this venture a labor of love. We’ve been evaluating many new varieties from Ron and other breeders and have identified some as exceptional. These are being propagated for us in quantity and we will be offering them in the next few years. Stay tuned! pg. 10 pg. 6 Hank Schannen’s CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS WITH RHODODENDRONS To inject some humor into Hank’s talks on rhododendrons, he began providing a handout to reduce planting and care problems.
