Board Report APRIL 2004 – MARCH 2005 The past year was an eventful one for the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped and the entire community living field as the provincial government continued with its plans to establish Community Living British Columbia and to introduce a new model of service delivery throughout the province. Agencies were challenged to deliver more efficient services with fewer resources. Advocates and families were asked to be patient. invited our participants, families, management, staff, and other stakeholders to provide us with input on the future direction of our agency. Within this climate of uncertainty, we felt it We argued (just a very little bit) over was important to revisit and solidify our own exact language, but were consistent in our opinion about the agency’s mandate. As an overarching goal, it was clear that we strive to facilitate the independence and growth of children and adults living vision. During the months of December and January, we participated in a very valuable strategic planning process. This was facilitated by Bob Logelin, Department Chair of the Adult Special Education program at with a developmental disability. Douglas College. Through this process, we From Left to Right: Ann Westwood, Heather Lohn, Rod Mc Taggart, Len Slade, Bonnie Cadman, Bev Baldwin, Roger Romses, Alan Gauntlett, Tom Carlile, John Hanbury, Jerry Miachika, Mark Kilian, Cindi Gerlach. 11 Board Report Our common values include excellence, creativity, dignity, and responsiveness. We believe the following: • Everything we do can be improved. • New ideas are needed to change the future of community living services on the North Shore. • Everyone embracing the values of the organization will do what is best for the individual served, each other, and our stakeholders. • Our community’s needs are urgent and we have a responsibility to respond immediately to all requests. We celebrate the individuality and diversity of each person. We value the contributions of each person. We believe in a community where everyone belongs. We promote understanding and acceptance through participation in community life. We believe working together makes a difference and shapes the future. These are the values that guide us in our work with the people we serve, their families, our membership, our staff, and our community. We talked a lot about corporate citizenship. For us, this refers to our efforts, activities, and interest in integrating into, contributing to, and supporting the communities where we deliver services to better address the needs of the people we support. As a responsible corporate citizen, the NSAMH ensures that people with a developmental disability are seen as contributing members 12 of the community. We promote inclusion and maximize access to generic and specialized services. This is at the heart of our strategic plan that will carry us through the next several years. In conjunction with this evolving strategic plan, we are seeking accreditation from CARF Canada. This process will help ensure that the NSAMH continues to meet extremely high standards for employment and the community services we offer. We anticipate that surveyors will do an on-site assessment during December 2005. In the meantime, we have formed an accessibility planning committee and an outcomes management committee that meet regularly to help us set and measure goals that are identified as important to our community. Despite the instability of the current community living climate, the year brought exciting new opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Within our agency, we celebrated many accomplishments and found ways to creatively enhance existing services. The following are just a few examples of the opportunities that happened last year within the NSAMH: • North Shore ConneXions celebrated its one-year anniversary of facilitating diverse recreational and social activities for hundreds of individuals of all ages. • The adult community-based respite program was launched in April 2004 and now supports almost forty families (four times more than the previous facilitybased program). • Participants of the Avengers youth program were commissioned to develop a video that illustrates the educational experiences of youth with special needs. • Renovations at Edgemont House allowed three programs to amalgamate under one beautiful roof and to offer improved services for all residents. • The family care program continued to support five individuals and allowed one other person to move from a group home We would also like to thank the agency’s leadership and staffing team for their creativity and dedication. The Board of Directors remains deeply committed to making opportunities happen for people with disabilities and their families. into a more suitable resource within the community. • The NSAMH Foundation transferred funds to the agency so that it was able to purchase a new van for the residents of Barlynn House. The year ahead will undoubtedly bring many new opportunities for the individuals and families we support. As an agency that has been evolving since 1956, we are excited about the future and are confident that we will continue to grow with our community. We are looking forward to our 50th anniversary and are currently examining the possibility of changing the name of our association. Stay tuned for details on each of these important issues. In closing, we would like to thank our members for their ongoing support. 13 Values, Beliefs, and Future Directions OUR VISION Our vision is a community where all people with disabilities have equal opportunities to lead active, fulfilling lives and are recognized as contributing members of the community.
