The building belonged to Afonso de Albuquerque, Viceroy of India, and is the site of a number of Roman archaeological finds. It currently hosts the Saramago Foundation, dedicated to the Portuguese Literature Nobel Prize TOURISTIC ATRACTIONS winner José Saramago. As the capital of the former Portuguese Empire, Lisbon boasts a thousand years of history, and is peppered with monuments of great importance, reflecting key moments in the country’s history. The peak of Lisbon’s wealth was during the Age of Discovery, a time which has left a heritage of rare beauty. If a city’s soul is to be found in its origins, it makes sense to start our trip at Castelo de São Jorge, a Moorish castle taken by Portugal’s first king when conquering Lisbon in 1147. The castle also boasts magnificent views over Lisbon. We are History! SOCIAL EVENTS With its variety of historical and modern sites, Lisbon offers countless venues for social events of every format and a plethora of animation and entertainment options that can be chosen to accompany the events, from historical reenactments at a Moorish castle or baroque palace to modern productions, traditional concerts and Fado performances. The options below constitute a sample of what Lisbon can offer for your social event: CASTELO DE S. JORGE The combined history and significance of the Castelo de S. Jorge make it an excellent place to hold a social event at the ISAAC 2014. With unique architectural spaces benefiting from their history and location in a unique urban setting and landscape, the Castelo de S. Jorge is available for several activities beyond the usual visit, including cultural events, concerts, exhibits, seminars, company meetings, theatre and other performances, banquets, receptions, promotional events and film and photo shoots. MUSEU DA ELECTRICIDADE The Electricity Museum opened to the public in May 2006 and is located at the former Tejo Power Station, one of Lisbon’s architectural landmarks. In its day it was a real pioneer in electricity generation, which can still be seen in all the industrial structures contained within and the industrial appearance of its façade, a must-see for all who appreciate the glory of old industrial architecture. Today, almost a century after it was built, the power station has again taken on innovative aspects and a prominent position as a museum and a premium venue in which meetings and events can be held in a unique atmosphere. SOCIAL EVENTS OCENÁRIO DE LISBOA The Oceanário is Europe’s largest aquarium and the vastness of its main tank, combined with several other tanks and structures, provides for a unique atmosphere and lighting. Opened in 1998, the Oceanário was the centerpiece of the XXth century’s last World Fair, themed “The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future”. With over one million visitors per year, the Oceanário is also Portugal’s most visited attraction. Perfectly integrated in the Tagus surroundings, the Oceanário is the ideal venue for meetings and events. The rooms, local atmosphere and all the logistic support provided will guarantee a successful and memorable event. PALÁCIO NACIONAL DE QUELUZ A former residence of kings and queens, the National Palace of Queluz invites you to meet the Portuguese cultural and natural heritage of an historical period that combines baroque, rocaille and neoclassical influences. The palace and its gardens and settings constitute a remarkable monument, in which every detail brings back to life the daily existence of the Royal Family during the second half of the 18th century. Conference Site Accessibility Criteria Yes No OTHER THINGS TO NOTE TIMING Workshops for people who use AAC should be held late morning or early afternoons. People who use AAC take longer to eat, so meetings over lunch or immediately after lunch don’t work well. CONTENT OF FORUM FOR PEOPLE WHO USE AAC Because many people have literacy difficulties, written material in visual presentations should be limited; if it is used, it should be read out. Give adequate time for people to become confident of speaking in a group (at least 1 hour). Take time to interpret symbol users’ communication. POSTER PRESENTATION It is recommended that an audio cassette be available to assist people who have literacy or visual problems to understand the presentation. Posters should be arranged at a height conducive to viewing by people using wheelchairs.
