Hoshide honored as outstanding teacher
On Oct.17, Roxane Hoshide,
who teaches first grade at St. Joseph Elementary School, was honored with over $1,000 in classroom
supplies from Hopaco OfficeMax.
The event was attended by elementary students, faculty, staff,
and Jan Takeya and Jan AndradeJoaquin,
sales
representatives
from Hopaco OfficeMax in Hilo.
Vice Principal Theresa Burian,
who nominated Hoshide for the
honor, thanked her for her outstanding years of service and dedication to the students at St. Joseph
Elementary School, where she has
taught since 1998.
Hoshide is a graduate of the University of Hawaii-Hilo Elementary
Education program.
Every year, teachers spend an average of $1,000 of their own money
on classroom supplies. OfficeMax
joined with AdoptAClassroom.
org to create “A Day Made Better”,
a one-day event that awards more
than 1,000 teachers with over $1,000
in school supplies, and brings attention to the issue of teacher-funded
classrooms. October 2012 marks the
sixth anniversary of the program.
Over the last five years more than
5,500 teachers have been surprised
with a new chair, loads of classrooms supplies and the recognition
they so richly deserve.

Benchmarks help prepare students for bright futures
Kathryn Matayoshi gave a presentation entitled “Transforming Public Education in Hawaii: Overview
and Status” at the Hilo Yacht Club
Oct. 12. She has served as DOE Superintendent since September 2010.
Victoria Torcolini, Principal of
St. Joseph School, said of the talk:
“I was happy to have attended the
Chamber’s luncheon on Friday and
to have gotten a chance to meet and
greet Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi in person.
“I especially felt ohana when she
reminded us that she grew up in
Hilo and that she knows well the de-
mographics of the Big Island. It was
good to hear her reiterate that both
Catholic Schools and Hawaii Public
Schools are on the same page with
Common Core National Standards.
These benchmarks go a long way to
preparing our students for bright futures in the global marketplace.”
Soccer team shows how it’s done - Jeffrey “Ziggy” Korytoski, University
of Hawaii-Hilo Men’s Soccer Coach, brought team members to St. Joseph
Elementary School Oct. 16 to demonstrate some soccer moves and to autograph the team’s official photo for all the students.

Prayer service honors Mother Marianne Cope
Students, faculty and staff held a
prayer service Oct. 19 to honor the
canonization of Mother Marianne,
Cope, Saint of Hawaii, which took
place Oct. 21 at the Vatican in Rome.
The service began with a flag raising, National Anthem, Hawaii Ponoi
and Pledge of Allegiance, followed
by prayer and a hula in her honor.
Mother Marianne cared for exiles
with Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) on
Molokai for 30 years beginning in
the late 1880s.

Motivational speaker visits - Kalani Ahmad, basketball star and motivational speaker, shared his message with St. Joseph
Elementary School students on Oct. 18. Ahmad has appeared on America’s Got Talent and graduated from UH-Hilo.
