If you notice holes in hosta leaves near the edges or between the veins, you probably
have slugs. They look like snails without shells and leave a slime trail where they
crawl. They feed at night and on cloudy days when temperatures are above 50 degrees and there is ample moisture.
Suggested remedies? There are commercial products which may help. A spray of 15%
non-foaming ammonia and 85% water sprayed on the plants between 9 pm and midnight. A spray of Garlic Barrier (or make your own) diluted and similarly sprayed on
the leaves. OR buy slug resistant hostas and not worry about the problem.
