The underlay makes all the difference!
Parquet and laminate floorings are
very popular. They give homes a cosy,
homey atmosphere. They can be installed by hand and by DIY hobbyists
with ease thanks to the click system.
But to ensure proper installation, allowing
you to enjoy your floor for as long as
possible, suitable underlayment are very
important. The SELIT range covers a wide
variety of underlayment, fine-tuned to the
specific conditions beneath the floor and
to the specific requirements that the floor
needs to meet. Various quality and price
grades are offered.
All SELIT underlayment are particularly
easy to handle to the benefit of DIY hobbyists. The 'easy' range of technologies,
easy lay®, easy click® and easy cut®, provide for a simple and fast installation of
underlayment, fast joining of individual
sections and perfect fitting. They have
since their introduction become an established standard in the market place.
The necessity of an underlay and the official rules relating to laminate underlayment in force since the end of 2013 will
be explained on the following pages.

Expert tips for product selection
New standards for evaluating quality
Following years of preparation in numerous working groups
at the European level (CEN) and within the EPLF, the official
rules governing laminate underlayment were published for
the first time ever at the end of 2013. SELIT was one of
the collaborators on these standardisation efforts and was
instrumental in putting requirements in place for laminate
flooring underlayment which will have a very significant
impact on floor construction overall.
What sets of rules exist?
Why is laminate underlayment necessary?
• The CEN/TS 16354 technical specifications
This official document of the European Committee addresses
all relevant criteria for laminate underlayment and defines
appropriate binding testing methods to meet these criteria.
They are aimed at ensuring that product properties are
tested according to a uniform set of criteria. The document
may also represent a preliminary step toward the expected
European product standard.
A laminate floor can only function if the underlay functions
as a part of the flooring system as a whole. The underlay
represents the connection between the laminate floor and the
substrate, and should function in the following ways:
• Ensure professional installation
This includes evening out unevenness and creating a level
installation surface so that a floating floor can be installed
properly.
• Protect the floor over time
The requirements are aimed at protecting the floor from
daily wear and tear like falling objects and walking, as
well as at shielding the floor from rising residual building
moisture or damp.
• Improve the properties of the floor
In addition to reducing the noise from impact and walking,
the underlay also adds heat insulation and walking comfort.

Until recently, there were no technical rules that described or
standardised laminate underlayment. While some countries
have statutory requirements (such as the Ü sign; certification
by construction supervision), they only apply to fire behaviour
and emissions rather than setting out performance parameters.
By the end of 2013 two applicable sets of rules were
established that represent the state of the art:
• EPLF technical bulletin
The EPLF technical bulletin is based on CEN/TS 16354,
supplementing the European document. In addition to the
key requirements that a laminate underlay must meet, the
bulletin contains explanatory notes and makes specific
recommendations for technical data.
It therefore defines minimum requirements that a laminate underlay should
meet, but also provides recommendations for higher requirements.

Impact sound insulation (IS)
When the sound of footsteps is transmitted to the
room immediately below, the result is generally
known as impact sound. Laminate underlayment can significantly reduce this impact sound
when combined with the floor being installed.
To protect the floor mechanically and prevent local
separations, it must be possible to even out small,
isolated bumps. Otherwise, the floor may be damaged, particularly in transition areas.

Reflected walking sounds heard in the same room
are called footfall noise. The fact that such sounds
are relatively loud in the case of laminate floors is
due to the floor itself. Underlayment can have a
noticeable sound reduction impact on this.
Because the testing standard is still being developed, there is no
generally recognised test for this; thus, unfortunately, we have no
recommendations either.

Daily use exposes floors – and thus also underlayment – to heavy wear. This is why laminate
underlayment must be able to stand up to longterm loads (CC/furniture), dynamic loads (DL25/

and have relatively poor heat insulation properties. An underlay can significantly improve the
heat insulation properties and improve home comfort by increasing the surface temperature.

Protection against falling objects (RLB)
Generally, laminate floors are suited for use on
hot-water underfloor heating. However, an underlay can affect this significantly with its own thermal
insulation resistance, so it is important to look at
the system as a whole.
Falling objects can damage irreparably the surface
of the laminate. That is why the type of laminate underlay used plays a particularly important role, along
with the quality of the flooring itself. These factors both
have as significant influence on the weight of the object and the height of the fall that can be absorbed without damage.

Complete set for professional installation
Professional moisture-proofing is particularly important with cold flooring, such as those found in cellars. To ensure
that floors are moisture-proofed and installation is as easy as possible for the customer, the SELITFLEX® 10 mm
THERMO complete set provides sufficient amounts of the needed accessory products.
The underlay itself provides a moisture barrier through the AquaStop™ film surface. The enclosed aluminium sealing
tape seals off the joints and the innovative SELITstop® Sealing & Spacer Belt (also included) facilitates the taping of
the wall joint area.
When later combined with integrated spacing foam during the laminate installation stage, the
Sealing & Spacer Belt ensures the correct distance from the wall. A utility knife rounds off

TRITTEX® 2 mm is suitable for installation in rooms that are used less frequently. It is
capable of compensating for unevenness of around 0,5 mm.
TRITTEX® 2 mm does not fulfil the minimum requirements of EPLF and MMFA, therefore
we do not recommend the product for laminate floors, but it can be used as an underlay
for less frequented wood floorings.

What's beneath the surface is important
For some years now, the market for vinyl flooring has been
growing. A variety of themes, structures and colours are
available at retail. The vinyl panels, also known as LVT flooring
(luxury vinyl tiles), can be installed, like laminate, very easily
thanks to the click--in-place mechanism. This makes the LVT
Flooring particularly interesting for DIY hobbyists, especially,
because they can be used in damp rooms and on existing
flooring. However, due to the fact that the vinyl panels are
thinner and more flexible than laminate and the click system
is more sensitive, the selection of the right underlay is all the
more important.

beneath rooms with vinyl flooring.
LVT flooring is generally considered to be 'quiet' flooring.
While this is certainly correct for footfall noise, it does not
apply to impact noise. The underlying structure of the surface
absorbs the noise and the footfall in the room itself is barely
heard. In the room below, however, the noise is very
unpleasant. This noise is known as reduce this impact noice.
Insulating underlayment can work wonders when trying to
reduce this impact noise.
Why is vinyl underlay necessary?
Floating vinyl flooring with click system can only work well if the vinyl underlay also works as part of the overall flooring system.
The underlay represents the connection with the substrate, and should function in the following ways:
• Ensure professional installation
This includes evening out bumps and creating a level
installation surface so that a floating floor can be
installed.
• Provide the floor with constant protection
This means protection from day-to-day stresses such as
from footfall as well as protection of floor systems from
moisture coming from above, such as in bathrooms.
• Improve the properties of the floor
The already good footfall noise properties of vinyl
flooring can be further optimised. But it's the very poor
impact noise properties in particular can be massively
improved.

Internal product testing
Technical products such as an underlay must be subjected to
different tests for quality assurance and product development
purposes. SELIT products are tested both prior to market launch
and throughout the course of the product lifecycle with respect
to all criteria relevant to the market place.
All acoustic and mechanical tests are performed in the 500 m²
SELIT testing laboratory specially established for this purpose.
These testing methods are applied to develop new products
and optimise existing ones.
