First it was “Brokeback Mountain,” and now it’s the German “Summer Storm,” where teen boys explore their sexuality out in the woods. It’s pretty predictable stuff: two best friends — one gay, one straight — have to deal with their feelings for girls and for each other. They’re also competing for a rowing trophy, and it just so happens that an all-gay team shows up to stir things up. What follows is a pretty cliché coming-out story. But actor Robert Stadlober does have a few scenes were he truly captures the agony of loving someone who won’t love you back. GRADE C- ‘Tsotsi’ Miramax Films ‘King Kong’ — A monkey with moves. — NINA GARIN RATED: R Now an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, this sometimeshaunting, sometimes-melodramatic film depicts a coming-of-age/redemption story in a township in Johannesburg. Presley Chweneyagae, as Tsotsi, is convincingly ruthless and vulnerable in portraying a teenage thug who carjacks and shoots a woman, then finds her baby in the back seat. The soundtrack is the secret weapon here. It’s sparsely scored to reveal the city’s sounds, but featured is Kwaito music, a sort of tribalistic South African hip-hop that helps roughen some of the sappier edges. GRADE B ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ — All the pretty dresses still won’t make this as good as the book. — KYLE PROEHL Regent Releasing ◗ READ THIS ‘Colorstrology — What Your Birthday Color Says About You’ BY MICHELE BERNHARDT If you wore born, say, on Dec. 15, your color is “Blue Heaven,” and you’re musical, a promoter and sexy. That’s what it says in this book anyway. Through very mysterious science, every day of the year is conveniently assigned a Pantone color and profile — it even has perforated swatches so HEARD FROM THE STREET Hello, For a few months now, we’ve been hearing a new voice on 91X. We investigated the matter and found Jennifer White, a very cool girl who spent time on the air in Seattle. Read all about her in this issue. Also, you might just want to camp out in Balboa Park this weekend since all our ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ ’ you can have your birthday color at all times. My color is “Lilac Snow,” which is strange because I hate purple. So, I’m not a total believer. Still, the book is pretty and fun to look at. And it can break the ice if you’re in an awkward situation. — aka “The Life and Times of 50 Cent.” — NINA GARIN STREET STAFF recommended events are going on over there. Just don’t forget to go see the Strokes at UCSD. We love them lots and lots. Street people EDITORS: WRITERS: PHOTO EDITOR: DESIGNER: E-MAIL US: T. Michael Crowell ....
