I
n the words of T. Bruce Wittet in Modern Drummer magazine: “From behind the
drum set (at the Montreal Drum Fest), Vera Figueiredo took the audience from
the Brazilian rainforest into the clubs and concert halls of the world. Jaws dropped
at her unique presence, approach, and distinctive licks.” Her nomination by British
Rhythm magazine as “The Queen of Samba,” and praise from other Brazilian and
international publications points out Vera Figueiredo’s musical power.
As a true ambassador for Brazilian music, Vera has toured Scotland, Northern
Ireland, England, Wales, Mexico, Chile, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Sweden,
Luxembourg, Germany and the United States performing workshops, master
classes, and shows. In addition, she has played important events such as the
Percfest Memorial Naco (Italy), The Ultimate Drummers Weekend (Australia), the
Mendoza International Drum Fest (Argentina), the PercuSonidos Festival
Internacional de Percusiones (Mexico), AGP Drum Event (Luxembourg), the Days of Percussion (Sweden), the Drum Fest – Primer
Festival International de Batería y Percusíon (Chile), the Cape Breton International Drum Fest (Canada), the KOSA International Drum
Event (USA), PASIC – Percussive Arts Society Convention, the Brazilian festivals PAS Brazil Chapter, Salão da Bateria, I Encontro
Percussivo REC-PEC, Festival de Percusión Patagonia (Argentina) and Batuka! Brasil International Drum Fest.
In 2011, Vera Figueiredo performed in Germany at the Musikmesse Frankfurt, the Dresdner Drum Festival, and the Drumtrainer/PAC –
Percussion Art Center, along with percussionist Dudu Tucci. She played at the La Rioja Drumming Festival, in Spain, along with Tommy
Aldridge, Ray Luzier, Aquiles Priester, among others. She performed in Portugal, along with the drummer Carlos Sobral, and also administered classes, masterclasses and clinics in several Brazilian cities, such as Ribeirão Preto, Ipatinga, Salto, among others. In 2012 Vera
performed in Italy at The Drum Ladies Fest. As a member of the Avon’s Orchestra, she has ccompanied artists such as Diana King, Zélia
Duncan, Milton Nascimento, Rita Lee, Leila Pinheiro, Margareth Menezes, and other famous Brazilian artists.
Vera’s 3rd CD, Vera Cruz Island (Rainbow Records), illustrates a mature moment in her craft as a player and a composer. “Vera Cruz
Island is like a photo album of Vera’s soul: intense, full of beautiful landscapes and very passionate for her art!” said Régis Tadeu (Batera
e Percussão Brazilian magazine). “Your drumming is so powerful and full of tradition” said Ken Micallef (Modern Drummer magazine).
Vera had also released the following albums: From Brazil (Camerati 1995) and Vera Figueiredo e Convidados (Baratos Afins-1990).
A single DVD with Vera’s instructional videos, Ritmos Afro-Brasileiros (Afro-Brazilian Rhythms) and Influência Afro-Cuban (Afro-Cuban
Influence) was released with English subtitles. She’s also released the DVD Os 40 Rudimentos (The 40 Rudiments). Both videos were
released by the Aprenda Música Productions (Brazil). Vera can also be seen at The Ultimate Drummers Weekend 11th Anniversary
DVD, playing along with Thomas Lang, John Blackwell Jr., Jimmy DeGrasso, Andrew Gander, Gustavo Meli and other world
class drummers.
In 1990 Vera founded the IBVF, Instituto de Bateria Vera Figueiredo, a much respected drumset institute located in São Paulo. The IBVF
also stages events such as the Batuka! Brasil International Drum Festival, one of the most important events of the Brazilian musical
scene, in its fourteenth year.
Vera Figueiredo has been featured on the cover of the Modern Drummer Brazil (twice) and Brazilian Batera & Percussão magazine. In
her second Modern Drummer Brazil cover she was featured along with Damien Schmitt, Dom Famularo and Robby Ameen in the
Batuka! Brasil Festival 2011.
Vera has also participated in NX4 Band’s video clip, and recorded with Kroma Group, an electric guitar quartet, featuring Heraldo
Paarmann (Ultraje a Rigor Band). She also played at the Girls on Drum event, in Curitiba (Paraná), and on Sabian’s Brazilian tour, in
Vila Velha (Espírito Santo) and São Paulo (São Paulo), as well as at the Intervalos Instrumentais, in João Pessoa and and Guarabira
(João Pessoa). When not playing instrumental music with her own band, Vera plays with the Banda Altas Horas, on the Altas Horas TV
show on the Globo TV Network. Vera has been writing articles for Modern Drummer Brazil magazine while working on her next album,
The Brasileira.
Vera Figueiredo plays Mapex Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Vic Firth Drumsticks, Evans Drumheads, Audix Microphones, Pitty Cajon and
Gope Brazilian Percussion.
