Deworming
Bonnie, can you please tell me if miniature
donkeys need to be wormed like horses. If so:
How often? How much?
Yes. Use a good paste horse dewormer such
as Strongid or Zimecterin and set to correct
weight usually around 350 pounds is good.
Deworm every 2 months or if your place is
very clean or they are out on a large pasture
you can go 3 to 4 months.
White Muscle Disease
prolapsed. They have had the vet out to check
him and he is stumped. He took blood work and
is going to research. He cannot lie down, he
tries, but cannot bend his body. We found him
down once trying to get up. Because he is small
enough, my son in law was able to pick him up
and put him on his feet. He seemed fine once
he was up. We do know the owner fed him a
large amount of alfalfa cubes. Vet doesn’t seem
to think this is tying up. Can you help. Have you
ever seen anything like this. We have gotten
attached to the little fella and want to help him,
but have to know what is wrong first.
I am at a total loss as to what this can be. I
hope you let me know what the blood work
indicates.
I have a question in regards to foal that was born
with white muscle disease and he can’t stand.
He needs a selenium/vit E injection immediately
and he will recover. If not he will die. The only
way to confirm white muscle disease is by
blood work.
Yes he has had a couple of selenium /vit E shots,
and he is doing better but his back legs keep
wanting to go under him it seems he has no
muscles or control of them and he won’t stand
. And the vet did do blood work on him. His
white blood cells were low 3 days after he was
born so he had 3 days of antibiotics by I.V. Any
suggestions on his back legs we stand him up but
we are holding him up. Thank you for your help
Well that’s what white muscle disease does
- affects the muscles. He should not have
antibiotics for low white blood cells. High white
blood. cell count would indicate infection.
Make a sling out of a towel and hold him up a
few times a day especially during feeding or
you take a chance of milk going into his lungs.
With any luck more time will get him thru this.
Feeding
I have just been given a 4yo jack. I have him out
with my other 3 horses...tb mare,24yo at 15.2;
15yo mare 16.2;10yo gelding at 17.2- he seems
to happy with them especially the gelding-they
pal around together. On your website it says
not to feed equine supplements-i have vit/min
mix with osa supplements added in, and I feed
noms daily wormer (natural diatomaceous
earth). If he gets this in cleaning out some of
the buckets, will there be any problems? Also,
what are the chances of him trying to breed
either of these mares? He is maybe 36” tall
if that.
The problem with many supplements is that
they are 1. Hardly ever needed for either
horses or donkeys if they are fed good
quality feed and 2. They can be fattening
especially for donkeys. Its ok if he gets the
diatomaceous earth.

Mystery Illness
My daughter rescued an unwanted donkey from
him owner. He has a hard body. Like it is in a body
cast. His neck and flank seem to be ok. He can
run and he has bowel movements. His rectum is

Urinating in Stall
I have 4 horses & all of them are shedding their
winter coat. The hair on the mini jennet (approx
9 mo. Pregnant) hasn’t even begun to shed.
What should I do?
I have 2 year and one half old gelded mini’s, and
the past few months they started peeing in their
stall, they only used to do that if it was pouring
rain, I could see that ,since they don’t want to be
in the rain, but now I feel their getting lazy?? Is
this normal? I just thought it wasn’t, since they
never did that before.
Nothing. Donkeys shed much later than
horses. They generally start sometime in May
finish in July and start getting their winter
apparel in August.
Lots of donkeys and horses will do this. Lots
of people have tried lots of things to try and
stop the habit but once they start it there
appears to be no cure.
Skittish Donkeys
We just purchased two gelded, one year old
miniature donkeys from an excellent farm. The
problem we are having is that really they want
nothing to do with us. We just received them
yesterday, but we can barely get close to them
without them running away. I’m not sure how I
am going to work with them if I can’t even catch
them. I was told that they would be extremely
friendly and easy to work with. Do you have
suggestions for us for gaining their trust?
Were you able to walk up to them in the
pasture at the sellers? If so they should
settle down soon. If the seller had them in
a stall or small area then it’s possible they
have never been handled much and it will
take a lot of time and patience for them to
become friendly.
Size of Udder
Just bought a bred jenny Easter Weekend, she
was really bagged up with hard bag and now her
bag has gotten smaller but still has the belly. Just
wondering if they bag up from stress of being
moved. Her due date is anytime up to July.
Jennets have been known to do this and it’s
not unusual. Her large udder will return.
Jacks
Hi, I am hoping that you can help me with a
donkey problem. We adopted a mini donkey,
Josie (about 7 year old jenny) from a friend.
She was raised with llamas and alpacas. We
brought her home and she seemed lonely. I
read your article saying that a “lone donkey is
a lonely donkey” so I wanted to find a friend for
her as quickly as possible. We bought a gelded
jack, Fred (about 3 yrs old), this week. We have
only had the jenny for a couple of weeks and
I thought that I would make her day when we
showed up with her new friend. Unfortunately,
she seems to hate him. He really seems to like
her and will not let her alone no matter how much
she kicks at him.
He has not kicked at her. We separated them
after only being together a couple of hours
because we were afraid Josie would hurt Fred.
I am not sure if Josie is in heat and that is
encouraging too much attention from Fred- who
does seem to have a one track mind in spite of
being gelded. Do you have suggestions? We
have had horses in the past and never had this
happen with them to this extent. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
That’s the problem with most jacks even
many gelded ones. 30% of gelded jacks
continue to act like stallions constantly
irritating biting and chasing jennets. Put them
back together and if he doesn’t settle down
within 3 days then they probably cannot be
pastured together.
Goats Milk
I wrote you about a month ago about a premature
donkey that has white muscle disease. He’s
doing better. He’s standing with some help and
he’s also walking with some help. My problem
now is that he’s not gaining any weight. We
are feeding him goats milk with some mares
milk replacement. But that does not seem to be
putting any weight on him. We have tried him on
grass but he will not eat it yet. Is there any other
solution to the problem. He seems to have the
diarrhea all the time and we have tried him on
straight mares milk and it gets even worse.
I would really appreciate your help in this.
It’s the mares milk replacer giving him the
diarrhea. Just give him all the goats milk he
wants. Also start giving him milk replacer
pellets - all he wants. Give him 1cc of
kaopectate for the diarrhea.
Stallion Behavior
We got a miniature donkey as a companion to our
riding horse. The donkey is 1 year old make not
gelded. I have a few questions if you could help.
1. the donkey rears up and nips at the horse..the
horse usually ignores him, but sometimes goes
after him , the horse does not follow through often
with real bites. However the donkey does not get
the message and keeps rearing up at the horse.
They sometimes chase each other around but
that looks like play VS being nasty.
2. We have a 2 acre pasture with mixed grasses
and about 25% alfalfa in it, can we let the donkey
graze with the horse with no muzzle on? What
should we watch for? Is it too rich?
3. Can these donkeys be trained?
Everything you describe is stallion like
behavior. He needs to be gelded as soon as
he can be. He can eat on a pasture with some
alfalfa. Watch for diarrhea. Yes donkeys are
easy to train.
Injured Donkey
I have a miniature donkey who got a deep cut.
My first instinct is to put iodine on the cut and
treat with antibiotics. This is our only minidonkey and she is a pet. I don’t want to do
anything that can hurt her...she is going on 2
years old. Would you be able to direct me in
the right direction to someone who would be
able to advise me on what to do? I was thinking
Penicillin for the antibiotic, but want to be sure
this will not be harmful to her. She is up and
around and moving fine, the cut is on her neck.
First she should get a tetanus antitoxin
vaccine ASAP. It’s too late for stitches but
I’d have a vet look at it and advise you on
appropriate treatment depending on severity.
Mom Neglects Newborn
I found your sight on the internet and wondered
if you have ever had any trouble with a donkey
after she has given birth. The mommy does not
want to let the baby eat. She is very attentive
and only wants the baby to stay under her neck.
Any suggestions would help.
This generally happens if maiden jennet.
There’s a lot of help on this in Miniature
Donkey Talks Foaling Manual if you have that.
Owners should always be prepared for these
situations. This foal needs milk ASAP. Hold
mom and position the foal correctly a long
side her to try and get her to nurse. Otherwise
you’ll have to bottle feed with goats milk
around the clock.
4. Would gelding the donkey calm him down?
5. When people are around he trots right up
and stays close…and rubs on you. He is nippy
with people as well, and sometimes will rear up
at people as well. Any suggestions? Is it just his
young age? His not being gelded? Can we do
something to train him to make him stop?
Preparing For Birth
I live in South Carolina. 6 years ago I was able
to start my dream of having a small Hobby Farm
and what a wonderful journey it has been. I
started with 4 chickens, now, I have 14 Silkies,
5 Barred Rock, 2 beautiful miniature sheep and

some Holland Lops and a bred Jennet who is
the sweetest animal I have ever known. She was
approximately 8 months pregnant when I got her
and she immediately took to my sheep and her
new home. I’ve had my vet out to check her
and he was amazed by her sweet demeanor and
gentle ways and that she and the sheep were so
close. She is in perfect health. My husband and
I built her a large 3 sided building on our front
pasture and she has access to my little barn in
the back yard. Here’s my question!
I am noticing that as she gets closer to birth that
she has chosen the front barn as “HERS” the
sheep are not welcome in their anymore. Does
this mean she is getting ready soon? We do
not know the exact month she conceived but
the vet thinks it will be sometime in July. Will I
need to remove the sheep to the back pasture
until the baby is born. She does love to chase
them and play and it keep s her in shape (and
the sheep amused) but recently I have seen
some aggression, not to the point of me worrying
about the sheep though. I will heed your advice
on fixing them an area that they can run into
where the donkey can’t. I love having Maggie
(our miniature donkey) and look forward to this
new little baby. Thank you for whatever advice
if any you deem necessary.
She’s just going through fluctuating
hormones right now. I wouldn’t separate her
from the sheep until she’s close to foaling.

she will deliver plus tons of other info. You
should have it on hand.
Heart Problems
I am a subscirber and I have a question. Last
night while our minature donkey was having her
hooves trimmed she collapsed and died. She
was a rescue donkey in her earlier years(she was
around 20) that had not had her hooves taken
care of so she was really really bad about having
her hooves done. She would thrash and do every
thing possible to keep from giving upher hooves.
My question is are miniature donkeys prone to
having heart attacks if they get stressed? I am
devastated that this happened and don’t want
to take any chances with my other two donkeys.
I wouldappreciate any insight you may have.

Sorry for your loss - I know the feeling - She
must have had a prior heart problem. We
have had many that have fought with the hoof
trimming, but never a problem. I think it was
an unfortunate thing that happened. Mike
Colic???
Are you familiar with using Karo syrup for colic?
Do you know the mixture? I am not sure, but
maybe she has a start of colic. Let me know
ASAP.
I will call the Vet if she does not get up, but right
now, she is getting up and coming to me.
how is your donkey acting? Does she roll?
No rolling. But back in January my other donkey
had colic and she did not roll...just layed down
and did not want to get back up. I had the Vet out
and he pumped her with the oil/water mixture.
She was better after about 24 hours.
This one seems to be laying down more than
usual, but she always get up later and does not
seem to have problem eating.
I may be little over protective.

syrup mixture?
The only way we have used syrup is when
we have crushed up Butte into a powder and
mixed it up to make it easier for the donkey
to take. This sounds like it could be a hoof

requirements of a jennet during the first 10
months of gestation are identical to open
(unbred) jennets. Do not give the jennet
additional feed during this time just because she

The greatest disease risk facing newborn foals is
navel infection, says Ken Gallagher, a Michigan
State University Extension equine veterinarian.
Improperly handled, disease that attacks foals at
this first part of their lives can cause devastating
permanent damage to organs and joints and
even lead to death.
Septic Arthritis in Foals
“Septic arthritis in foals is a potentially crippling or life-threatening disease caused by
bacterial infection of the joint,” says Dr. RuthAnne Richter, equine veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Medicine Teaching
Hospital in Urbana. “The degree of joint damage depends on the severity of the infection
and the strength of the foal’s immune system.”

Equine are subject to some 50 primary skin
diseases and dozens more secondary ones.
Fortunately, only a handful are quite common
and their signs offer clues to a condition’s identity
and solution.
There is a single rule of thumb to follow:
all bumps emanate from within the skin,
while scurf, flakes, crusts, hairless
patches and weeping secretions point to
trouble on the surface.

Young donkeys are most susceptible
to warts because they have less efficient immune systems than older donkeys,

On Top Of The Skin
Itchy, thick patches with hair loss are usually
indicative of sweet itch seen on the shoulders,
withers, rump and tail. The condition appears
when insect saliva causes an allergic
reaction on the donkeys hide. A donkey
will rub himself raw to relieve the
itching. Insecticides help along with
corticosteroid preparations but
the donkey may have to be sheltered
in a dark barn during the day until the
condition improves.
Warts

Donkey owners can be startled by the sudden
appearance of cauliflower-like warts that range
in color from grayish brown to pink and appear
on the mouths and noses of their weanlings and yearlings. These are equine
warts, which are caused by a highly
contagious virus that is spread by
direct contact.

Two Bear Hunters
Two men went bear hunting. While one stayed in
the cabin, the other went out looking for a bear.
He soon found a huge bear, shot at it but only
wounded it. The enraged bear charged toward him,
he dropped his rifle and started running for the
cabin as fast as he could.
He ran pretty fast but the bear was just a little
faster and gained on him with every step. Just as
he reached the open cabin door, he tripped and fell
flat. Too close behind to stop, the bear tripped over
him and went rolling into the cabin.
The man jumped up, closed the cabin door and
yelled to his friend inside, “You skin this one while I
go and get another one!”
Driving with Penguins
A man was driving down the road with twenty
penguins in the back seat. The police stop him and
say that he can’t drive around with the penguins in
the car and should take them to the zoo. The man
agrees and drives off.
The next day the same man is driving down the
road with twenty penguins in the back and again.
He is stopped by the same police officer who says,
“Hey! I though I told you to take those to the zoo.”
The man replies “I did. Today I’m taking them to the
movies.”
This guy sees a sign in front of a house:
“Talking Dog for Sale.”
He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog
is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard
and sees a black mutt just sitting there.
“You talk?” he asks.
“Yep,” the mutt replies.
“So, what’s your story?”
The mutt looks up and says, “Well, I discovered
this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the
government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and
in no time they had me jetting from country to
country, sitting in rooms with spies and world
leaders, because no one figured a dog would be
eavesdropping.
I was one of their most valuable spies eight years
running. The jetting around really tired me out, and
I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to
settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport
to do some undercover security work, mostly
wandering near suspicious characters and listening
in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and
was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a
mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the
owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says,
“Ten dollars.” The guy says, “This dog is amazing.
Why on earth are you selling him, so cheap?
“The owner replies, “He’s such a liar. He didn’t do
any of that stuff.”
A ventriloquist cowboy walks into town. He
sees a farmer and his hound dog sitting sitting out
on the front porch of a rusted old shack, and he
figures he’ll have a little fun.
Cowboy: “Hey, cool dog. Mind if I speak to him?”
Farmer: “Dogs caint talk!”
Cowboy: “Hey dog, how’s it going?”
Dog: “Great, thanks for asking.”
(Farmer stares in stupefied amazement )
Cowboy: “How does your owner treat you?”
Dog: “Really well. He walks me twice a day, feeds
me Alpo, and takes me to the lake once a week to
play.”
Cowboy: “Mind if I talk to your horse?”
Farmer: “Horses caint talk!”
Cowboy: “Hey horse, how’s it going?”
Horse: “Cool.”
(Farmer falls off his chair)
Cowboy: “How’s your owner treat you?”
Horse: “Pretty good. He rides me regularly, brushes
me down often, and keeps me in the barn to protect
me from the elements.”
Cowboy: “Mind if I talk to your sheep?”
The farmer stands up and says, “Them sheep ain’t
nothing but a bunch of damned liars!”
This lady approaches a priest and tells him,
“Father, I these two talking female parrots, but
they only know how to say one thing: ‘Hi, we’re
prostitutes. Do you want to have some fun?’ “
“That’s terrible!” the priest exclaimed, “but I have a
solution to your problem. You can put them with my
two male talking parrots. I taught them to read the
bible and pray the rosary.”
The lady brings over her parrots and puts them
in the priest’s cage. “Hi, we’re prostitutes. Do you
want to have some fun?” they say.
One male parrot looks over at the other and
exclaims, “Put the beads away. Our prayers have
been answered!”
