GETTING THERE
Commercial transportation to Catalina Island consists of regularly scheduled passenger ferryboats, as well as some helicopter flights. During the
summer (mid-May through Labor Day) or on holidays, reservations should
be made one to two weeks in advance. Check in at least 1 hour before
departure. Schedules and fares change frequently and usually without
notice. Call to verify the information shown.
Air
ISLAND EXPRESS (800) 228-2566. Reservations required. Helicopters
depart daily 8 am-sunset. Round-trip fare $211.00; 1-way fare $110.00;
ages 2 and younger are free. The six-passenger turbine helicopters take 15
minutes to reach Pebbly Beach in Avalon (Catalina map, D-7).
Depart from Long Beach: 1175 Queens Hwy S. Next to the Queen Mary.
Depart from San Pedro: Catalina Terminal, Berth 95.
Boat
CATALINA FLYER (800) 830-7744. Reservations required.
Depart from Newport Beach: Balboa Pavilion, 400 Main St. Daily departures at 9 am. Reduced schedule Dec-Feb. Round-trip fare $69; ages 60
and older, $64; ages 3-12, $52; ages 2 and younger, $5. Sailing time to
Avalon is 75 minutes.

Multiple daily departures. Round-trip fare $74.50; ages 55 and older,

Depart from San Pedro: Catalina Terminal, Berth 95. Frequent daily
departures. Round-trip fare $72.50; ages 55 and older, $66.00; ages 2-11,
$57.00; under age 2, $5. Trips to Two Harbors also leave from this location.
Sailing time to Avalon or Two Harbors is 75 minutes.
Depart from Long Beach: Downtown Catalina Landing, 320 Golden Shore.
Frequent daily departures. Round-trip fare $72.50; ages 55 and older,
$66.00; ages 2-11, $57.00; under age 2, $5. Sailing time to Avalon is 60
minutes.
GETTING AROUND AVALON
Avalon is an easily accessible town, so the best way to get around is on
foot. Shopping areas and tour departure points are within easy walking
distance of the commercial boat landings. Golf carts are a popular way to
see Avalon; drivers must have both a driver’s license and auto insurance
valid in California; age requirements vary.
AVALON TROLLEY The route begins at the boat landing (Avalon map E-5)
and has several stops including Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden and
Descanso Beach Club. Rates: one-way $2, round trip $4, and a day pass
$7, cash only. Schedules vary according to season.
CARTOPIA (Avalon map, F-4). (310) 510-2493. 4 or 6 passenger golf cart
rentals. Call for current rates. Deposit required.
CATALINA AUTO AND BIKE RENTAL (Avalon map, E-3). (310) 510-0111.
Street and mountain bike rentals. 4 or 6 passenger golf cart rentals. Call for
current rates. Deposit required.

VISITOR INFORMATION AND ACTIVITES
The agencies listed below are responsible for most of the tours on Catalina
Island. Activities available include snorkeling, kayaking, bicycling, camping
and fishing. Call or visit the website for current tour rates and schedules.
CATALINA ADVENTURE TOURS Ticket booths located on the Green
Pleasure Pier (Avalon map, E-4) and at the Cabrillo Mole (Avalon map,
E-5). (877) 510-2888, catalinaadventuretours.com. This information booth
offers free brochures, reservations and tickets for the company’s many
island tours, including Glass-Bottom Boat, Inside Adventure, Sunset Dinner
and Cruise, Seal Rocks Explorer, The Nautilus, and Village Walking Tour.
CATALINA ISLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & VISITORS BUREAU at
Green Pleasure Pier (Avalon map, E-4). (310) 510-1520. Open Mon-Sat 8
am-5 pm, Sun 9 am-4pm. On Sundays July thru Sept, the office closes at 5
pm. The bureau has information on the island’s hotels, attractions, outdoor
recreation, transportation, and events.
CATALINA ISLAND CONSERVANCY (310) 510-2595,
catalinaconservancy.org. This private land trust protects nearly 90 percent
of the island and provides permits and information about exploring Catalina
at The Conservancy House (Avalon map, F-4), Nature Center at Avalon
Canyon (Catalina map, E-7), Nature Center at Airport in the Sky (Catalina
map, C-5), and Two Harbors Visitor’s Services (Catalina map, C-2). The
conservancy operates the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden (Catalina
map, E-6), (310) 510-2897. Open daily except major holidays. Admission
$7, seniors $5, ages 5-12 $3, under 5 and active military free.
CATALINA TRANSPORTATION SERVICES Avalon. (310) 510-0025
taxi/shuttle, (310) 510-0342 charters. Private transportation, back country
adventure charters, and open air jeep tours.
SANTA CATALINA ISLAND COMPANY Discovery Tours. (310) 510-2500,
510-8687, (800) 626-1496, visitcatalinaisland.com. This one-stop source for
Catalina Island activities and tours, including zip lines, open-air Hummer
travel, casino behind the scenes, underwater expedition, and numerous
boat trips. Facilities run by this company include Catalina Island Golf
Course, Descanso Beach Club, and Golf Gardens miniature golf. Catalina
Safari Bus (310) 510-2800, provides scheduled bus service between
Avalon and Two Harbors through the island’s interior, with three stops along
the 2 hour route. Schedules vary according to season.
THE CASINO 1 Casino Wy (Avalon map, C-4). (310) 510-2500 (tours).
Open to the public only for special events and during the Casino Tour. Built
in the late 1920s, this art deco landmark is as tall as a 12-story building.
Never used for gambling, the Casino was an especially popular venue
during the 1930s and ’40s for many of the nation’s big bands. The building
contains a 180-foot-diameter ballroom, a movie theater, an art gallery, and
the Catalina Island Museum (310) 510-2414.
TWO HARBORS (Catalina map, B-3 and inset) a pleasant, tranquil village
on Catalina’s west end, offers a variety of outdoor recreation. Visitors can
take a bus trip from Avalon into Two Harbors or arrive by boat with one of
the Catalina cruise operators. A permit is required to hike or mountain bike
the island’s interior; contact Two Harbors Visitor Services (310) 510-4205 or
the Catalina Island Conservancy (310) 510-2595. Two Harbors Dive and
Recreation Center (310) 510-4272, offers rentals of beach, dive, and
snorkel equipment, kayaks, and bicycles.
ACCOMODATIONS AND DINING
There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Avalon. See the listings
