The Pradera Press October 2011 Kids & Adults Halloween Parties a C r v n i i n k g p C m o u ntest P d n A October 29th More on Page 4 The Club at Pradera 5225 Raintree Drive, Parker, CO 80134 (303)607-5700 Chips Shots With shorter days and “somewhat” cooler weather in place, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Advisory Board of Governors and our many outstanding committees for all their hard work and effort through the 2011 golf season. heads for their work in the execution of the Advisory Board and Committees vision for the Club at Pradera. It is through this kind of continued dedication that we continue to make Pradera that “special” place that we have all come to love. Over the past few months, I have received feedback and recognition from many of you with regards to The Mystic, The Celtic, The Club Championships, and the numerous other events that the Club hosts throughout the year. These events would not have been as successful if it were not for the efforts of both the Men’s and Women’s Golf Committees. I would like to extend a special thankyou to Matt Kellogg; Chair of the Advisory Board of Governors, Rosalyn Rosenthal; Chair of the Women’s Golf Committee, and Tom Tarasoff; Chair of the Men’s Golf Committee for the dedication and leadership throughout this past season. I firmly believe that it is their work and the work of their committee members throughout the year that truly make our events special, unique, and often imitated throughout the local golf market. Over the next few months, Club management will be working with our Advisory Board on the implementation of several exciting initiatives that are being developed based on the most recent membership survey. We look forward to sharing this information with you, beginning in mid-October. Until that time, please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything that I can do to assist. In closing, I look forward to a wonderful fall and winter and an even better 2012. Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you at the Club. We have begun to meet with the equipment and apparel vendors and the new products look very exciting for next season. The Women’s and Men’s Golf Committees have been meeting to discuss the 2012 Calendar of Events. We hope to have the event schedule finalized by mid-November. The GHIN handicap system will stop taking local scores November 14th. If you play on facilities that are currently “in season”, you are required to post those scores into the GHIN system throughout the winter. Please let the golf shop know if you need assistance in posting away scores. I hope you enjoy the Fall and hope to see you at the Club! Turf Care Corner From all of us at the Pradera maintenance facility, thank you for another wonderful season of golf. We are currently in the middle of our course aerification and would like to thank you for your patience. Aerification is the key to our long term success of the course conditions. In addition to relieving soil compaction from the constant traffic, it gives us an opportunity to incorporate amendments such as seed and fertilizer into the soil profile which enhances our turf density, fertility, water holding capacity and compaction resistance for the upcoming golf season. Aeration is beneficial in many ways, improving water penetration into the compacted soils and through the thatch layers, improving fertilizer movement to the turf roots, allows greater levels of oxygen to reach the soil in exchange for carbon dioxide and other gases, enhances turf grass shoot and root development and reduces water runoff. It is of the utmost importance that we prepare the course for its winter dormancy period; this is a time when the course is most vulnerable to desiccation, compaction and the inability to recover from any damage or wear. Fall has arrived and winter is in the air and with the change of season come a few changes on the course. continue to water our surface areas .50 inch of water however we have reduced our frequency of irrigation. In the heat of the summer our surfaces areas only receive water every three days and as the temperatures decrease we are able to increase the number of days to four and then five and even seven or eight days before we water again. This encourages deep root growth and helps the turf survive long dry winters which we may have this year. So over the last month or so you should have been cutting back on your watering frequency. By the time many of you read this letter you should have someone scheduled to winterize your sprinkler system, if you haven’t you can call the maintenance facility and Brad may be able to help you. The first week in October we applied a winterizer fertilizer to the entire golf course. A winterizer fertilizer is a custom blended fertilizer that is high in potassium and contains a slow release nitrogen source. Potassium makes the plant tougher and encourages root growth and the slow release nitrogen slowly feeds the turf throughout the winter. Thanks again for the wonderful season of golf. We hope that you can get some good golf rounds in this winter but remember how much fun you can have off the course in Colorado during the winter months. Arapahoe basin opens around October 15. Prior to winter coming we will be doing a few cultural practices in conjunction with aeration to help the turf survive the winter and these are a few things you should be doing for your home lawn as well. Water management is the most important tool to help your turf survive the winter and thrive in the spring. We Thank you, H. Dean Lindsey 6 New Kaia Session Begins October 10th! Kaia F.I.T.
