BENTGRASS
TURF GRASS
Used primarily on golf courses, requires high maintenance. With proper
management, bentgrasses can be used for permanent turf in cool turfgrass
zones. Can be cut very short!
CREEPING BENTGRASS
(Agrostis palustris)
COLONIAL BENTGRASS
(Agrostis tenuis)
Preferred for golf greens and tees. Repairs itself
quickly. Can be cut at 1/8 inch or less. Grows best
in areas with cool moist summers, but will persist in
hotter drier weather if ample water is provided.
Varieties: L93, Pennlinks, Bengal, A4, G6, Viper,
Independence, Shark
-----------------------------------------------------------------------Used on golf fairways and tees, in lawn seed mixtures, and in erosion
control mixtures. Fine-textured, upright, dense turf under close mowing.
Well adapted to cool climates – long lived, low temperature hardiness.
Variety: Highland
------------------------------------------------------------------------
VELVET BENTGRASS
(Agrostis canine L.)
REDTOP
(Agrostis alba L.)
Very fine-textured with erect growth habit, high shoot density
and uniformity. Spreads by creeping stolons faster than
Colonial Bentgrass, but slower than Creeping Bentgrass, with
slow shoot growth. Slow establishment and recuperative
potential. Long-lived perennial for cool, humid regions with
good heat and cold tolerance. Fairly drought resistant and good
shade tolerance. Prefers coarse-textured well-drained soils,
but will persist on acidic infertile soil. Strong thatching
tendency is suppressed by close, frequent mowing of .2 to .4
inches.
Varieties: Vesper, SR7200
-----------------------------------------------------------------------Coarse textured stemmy turf with low shoot density. Short rhizomes
with medium establishment. Behaves either as long-lived or short-lived
perennial depending on culture, soil, and environmental conditions.
Adapted primarily to cool humid climates. Does not tolerate shade
or high temperatures. Can be used on a wide range of soil types and
moisture conditions. It is often utilized on wet, imperfectly drained,
fine-textured, and acidic soils of low fertility. Commonly used in seed
mixes for roadside, ditches, and erosion control. Does not persist under
close frequent mowing. Mow at 1.5 inch to 2 inch.
Varieties: Reton, Common
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BLUEGRASS
KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS
(Poa pratensis L.)
Known for its dark rich color, fine texture, and cold and stress
tolerance; Kentucky Bluegrass is ideal for medium to high maintenance
applications.

turf, excellent resistance to leaf
spot, and long winter dormancy.
Characteristics of compact type,
very dark green color, and
susceptible to powdery mildew.
Characteristics of compact type,
finer leaf, higher density,
moderate winter dormancy, resistant
to powdery mildew, and good in
shade.
Aggressive lateral growth, very
wear tolerant, and quickly knit
sod and repair.
Moderate winter color, good turf
quality and sod strength.
Exhibits traits that are
intermediate between groups.
Additional study required to

FINE FESCUE
Chewings, creeping red, and hard fescue seeds mix well with Kentucky
Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass. They are an important part of any
fine turf mixture. Fine fescues are shade tolerant and exhibit good
drought tolerance. Fine fescues are also ideal for use as a cover
crop under grapes and orchards. Newer varieties have endophytes.
CHEWINGS
(Festuca rubra var. commutata)
CREEPING RED FESCUE
(Festuca rubra L.)
Performs well in acidic infertile soils with high sand content. New
varieties have superior performance and darker color than older
varieties. Prefers cutting height of 1 to 2 inches. Our varieties
have endophytes.
Varieties: Longfellow II, 7 Seas, Windward, Radar
-----------------------------------------------------------------------Good establishment rate – faster than Kentucky Bluegrass, but slower
than ryegrass. Long-lived perennial for cool, humid region. Good
shade, heat, and cold tolerance. Our varieties show tolerance to a
wide range of unfavorable conditions, contain endophytes, and have a
darker color. Recommended cutting height of 1 to 2.5 inches.
Varieties: Pennlawn, Navigator, Jasper II, Razor, Garnet, Crossbow
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Varieties: Azay, Azay Blue, Bornito
------------------------------------------------------------------------
TALL FESCUE
TALL FESCUE
(Festuca arunidinacea schreb)
Turf type tall fescues have made rapid improvements over the last decade.
New proprietary varieties have finer leaves, a darker green genetic
color, and a reduced growing height. Tall fescues are known for wear,
shade, and drought tolerance. All newer varieties have endophytes.

Crossfire 3
NEW VARIETIES: Darlington, Houndog 6, Jamboree, Firecracker, Raptor II
------------------------------------------------------------------------
RYEGRASS
Ryegrasses germinate and establish quickly. Mixes well with bluegrass
and fine fescues. Improved perennial turf types have a dark green, fine
textured leaf, although shoot growth is slower than common varieties.
Preferred cutting height of 1.5 to 2 inches.
PERENNIAL RYEGRASS
(Lolium perenne)
ANNUAL RYEGRASS
(Lolium multiflorum)
Best adapted to cool moist regions, suffers the most of all turf grasses
from winterkill. Good adaptation to partial shading and wear tolerance.
Newer perennial ryegrasses have some endophytes. Endophytes should not
be used where horses pasture.
Varieties: Futura 3000, Amazing GL, Blazer 4, Fiesta 4, Palace, All*Star 3
NEW VARIETIES: Derby Xtreme, Karma, Mighty, Player, Wicked, Stellar 3GL,
Green Supreme
------------------------------------------------------------------------Grown for pasture, turf, and erosion control, annual ryegrass is an
economical ground cover. Use as a nurse grass in lawn maintenance areas
while the permanent turf is establishing. Fine to medium texture, light
green, and very fast establishment rate. Has extremely low tolerance
for cold temperatures, with little tolerance for moisture or heat stress.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
CLOVER
WHITE CLOVER
(Trifolium repens L.)
A low growing perennial legume best adapted to moist, fine-textured soils
and cool humid climates. Spreads by means of stolons with shallow rooting.

INOCULANTS
Legume inoculants are strains of beneficial bacteria called rhizobia.
The rhizobia attach themselves to the seed, and promote greater
nodulation and fixation of nitrogen. This promotes better stand
establishment and stronger plants with a greater ability to withstand
adverse conditions. For legumes used in forage situations, higher
levels of available nitrogen translate into maximum protein production.

ESTABLISHING WILDFLOWERS
1. Rake the area to form grooves.
2. Broadcast seed with shaker or cyclone seeder. See seeding rates above.
3. Lightly rake over area to ensure proper soil/seed contact.
When to Plant: Early spring is the best time, but dormant seeding is also
an option. Late summer seeding should be at least 8-9 weeks prior to first
frost.
Companion Crop: A non-competing companion grass such as sheep fescue or
hard fescue will bulk up the mix for easier application, stabilize the soil
until wildflowers become established and decreases annual weed competition.
Use 4 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. with the wildflower mix.
Maintenance: Established wildflowers do not require a lot of maintenance.
If natural rainfall does not occur, watering will aid in germination and
establishment. Mow the area in the fall. This will make the area neater,
and spread the seeds of the annuals for germination in the following year.
[20]
FERTILIZER ANALYSIS & APPLICATION The three numbers in the analysis tell the percentage of the three
essential plant foods: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Additional numbers indicate the addition of secondary or minor plant
food elements: Magnesium (Mg), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe),
Manganese (Mn), Boron (B), and Sulfur (S).
Nitrogen will increase growth of leaves and stems, stimulates rapid
early growth, and greening up the plant. A deficiency in nitrogen
will cause yellow leaves and stunted growth.
Phosphorus promotes root formation and growth. Particularly helpful
to root crops such as potatoes, carrots, and beets. A deficiency in
phosphorus will cause lower leaves to turn red, purple or an unusual
deep green.
Potassium increases plant vigor and resistance to disease. It
stimulates production of strong, stiff stalks, promotes the
production of sugar, starch and oils, and increases plumpness of
fruits and vegetables. A deficiency will result in yellow leaves
at the tips and edges, weak stalks, and poor “setting” of fruit.

GMF NO-PHOS &
LO-PHOS FERTILIZERS
In their continuing campaign to control phosphorus contamination of its
watersheds effective January 1, 2012, the State of Vermont is requiring a
sign to be prominently posted wherever fertilizer containing phosphorus
is sold. Fertilizers with phosphorus must be sold separated from no
phosphorus fertilizers.
Phosphorus is an essential element for root development in new seedings.
However, most established lawns require little or no phosphorus. Old
habits are hard to break, but we do offer ALL OUR BLENDS without phosphorus
and with prominent “No-Phos” labels.
There are many sources of phosphorus build-up in lakes and watersheds
BESIDES fertilizer (detergents, plant debris, sewage, and manure), and many
steps we all can take to control phosphorus build-up, and preserve the
pristine beauty of our waters. Education is the key.
The above drawing shows typical sources of phosphorus and other
contaminants generated by a home on a lake. A significant source
of phosphorus in some areas is caused by eroded soil as soil is
washed into the lake due to lack of appropriate vegetation.

Committee.

LIME EFFICIENCY
All lime is not the same. While all lime contains calcium, an essential
element for the formation of cell walls, and all lime neutralizes acid in
the soil, the "reaction time" can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 25+ years,
depending on the form of the lime. The determining factor in how quickly
a lime product will act is how finely the lime is ground. (The finer the
lime, the quicker it acts.) This is determined by passing the product
through screens with openings specified by a U.S. standard. The screen
"size" is the openings per inch.
With pelletized lime, it is sized before the pelletizing process. This
process binds the lime together into pellets using an organic binder for
easy, dust-free spreading. Once applied, the lime is quickly broken down
into its original form by moisture. With pelletized lime, the reaction
time is determined by the form of the lime prior to pelletizing, which
means that not all pelletized limes behave the same. For example,
LimeRite is pulverized lime before pelletizing, while GMF calcium is
made from “superfines”.
Use the two charts below as a guide to how quickly the various lime
products we offer will act.

The amount of material required to change pH depends on the type of soil.
There are three basic soil types – sandy, loam and clay. Sandy soils dry
out rapidly and clay soils do not absorb water, but puddle and run off.
