SHIP HOLAR FOUNDAT C S IO ER N VIP Reception 5 to 6 p.m. DEN V THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2015 General Reception 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Hyatt Regency Denver at the Colorado Convention Center 650 15th Street, Denver, CO 80202 TH EP SS IBLE Dinner and Program 6:30 to 9 p.m. O W E R O F TH E PO HONOREES: Noey and Tom Congdon Known to most as quiet philanthropists, for over 50 years Noey and Tom Congdon have made strategic investments in nonprofits serving the key educational and cultural needs of the growing population of Colorado. Now retired, Tom served as the chief executive officer of a midsized NYSE-listed oil and gas exploration and production firm. Beyond his professional career, Tom has always been actively involved in his community. He served as Chairman of the Denver Art Museum and Chairman of Colorado Public Radio, and as director for numerous for-profit and nonprofit organizations in Denver, Washington DC, and throughout the west. Noey has invested her time leading many cultural development projects throughout Colorado. In the ‘70’s she directed NEWSED, the economic arm of the Hispanic community’s West Side Action Center. In addition, she served as the Chairwoman for the Aspen Music Festival, the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, and the Denver Art Commission. She currently serves on the board of Hunger Free Colorado. Expanding educational opportunities for young people has long been a focus for the Congdons. When the Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) was founded in 2006, they immediately recognized its potential impact on students and on Denver. They were among the very first major investors in DSF’s endowment, and have maintained close ties to the organization ever since. They are true believers in DSF’s mission of making college possible for all Denver Public School graduates. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Congdons’ longstanding generosity to key organizations has been instrumental in the State’s continued growth and success. Most certainly their sustained investment in DSF has helped to make college a possibility for every public high school graduate in Denver. KEYNOTE: John Quiñones John Quiñones is the Emmy Award-winning co-anchor of ABC newsmagazine Primetime and has been with the network nearly 25 years. He is the sole anchor of the Primetime limited series What Would You Do?, one of the highest-rated newsmagazine franchises of recent years. During his tenure he has reported extensively for ABC News, predominantly serving as a correspondent for Primetime and 20/20. Quiñones, like many DSF Scholars, is a first generation college graduate, who overcame many obstacles on his path to earning a college degree, including growing up in a Spanish speaking family. Determined to overcome barriers, Quiñones heeded his father’s advice to work towards a college degree, Quiñones was selected to take part in Upward Bound, which he often credits for “saving his life.” Quiñones eventually enrolled in college at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. He then went on to receive a Master’s degree from the Columbia School of Journalism. Quiñones has won seven national Emmy Awards for his Primetime Live, Burning Questions and 20/20 work. He was awarded an Emmy for his coverage of the Congo’s virgin rainforest, which also won the Ark Trust Wildlife Award, and in 1990 he received an Emmy for Window in the Past, a look at the Yanomamo Indians. He received a National Emmy Award for his work on the ABC documentary Burning Questions—The Poisoning of America, which aired in September 1988, and was also honored with a World Hunger Media Award and a Citation from the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards for To Save the Children, his 1990 report on the homeless children of Bogota. Quiñones joined ABC News in June 1982 as a general assignment correspondent based in Miami, providing reports for World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and other ABC News broadcasts. Proceeds from the Ed Gala will make it possible for thousands of Denver Public Schools graduates to complete a college degree. Since DSF was founded in 2006, we’ve had a transformative impact on college completion rates in Denver. WHY? • 76 percent of all DSF Scholars are either still in school or have completed their program. • 79 percent of DSF Scholars are first-generation college students. • The number of DPS students who enroll in college the fall after graduation has increased by 34 percent since DSF was founded in 2006.
