CHEMICAL ENGINEERING PILOT PLANT Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Annual Report 2008 www.cepp.utm.my INTRODUCTION Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (CEPP) is a multi-purpose Research and Business Development (R&BD) facility located at UTM Campus, Johor Darul Takzim. The centre was established to spearhead the development of new innovative specialty chemical products and processes. The centre is equipped with a range of semi-industrial scale processing equipment and supporting laboratory facilities. It assists in the development of high value components and innovative processing technology for industries such as nutraceuticals,, herbal,, p phytochemicals, y , flavour and fragrance, g , biopesticides, p , biofertilizers, food ingredients and probiotics. CEPP offers a wide range of laboratory and pilot scale research capabilities from gramme to kilogramme quantities. With a VISION to be a leading centre in research and business development of specialty chemicals, CEPP is aiming for being an innovative specialty chemical research and business development centre committed to creating prosperity and benefits from country natural resources for the nation through sustainable p process technology. gy Research and Business Development unit consists of 10 Strategic Business Units that responsible in the development of products that have value added and viability to be commercialized by the industry. R&BD utilizing semi-industrial scale process equipment with flexible utilities supports for process and product development, scaling up process, plant optimization and troubleshooting and shelf life testing and standardization. CEPP have received several research grants from MOSTI and FELDA Foundation to carry out research in the respective fields. As a Life Long Learning Centre, CEPP offers innovative and flexible programmes focusing on Process Technology, Plant Technology, Herbal Processing and Formulation, Biotechnology and Wellness Programmes to the industry for the purpose of upgrading skills and knowledge. The programmes are developed for herbal, biotechnology, complementary therapy, process technology, oil and gas, chemical and oleochemical industry. Staffs from more than 300 local and overseas companies have attended our training programmes. CEPP equipped with semi-industrial scale process equipments provide an avenue for the industry to develop, evaluate and appraise their processes, equipment, chemicals and catalyst. CEPP also undertaking contract manufacturing of certain specialty chemicals whose small volume is uneconomical to build a plant especially from SMEs. CEPP is also expanding its capacity to assist small and medium size companies by building the first phytochemical and herbal extraction plant operating under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment in Malaysia that will be ready for operation by June 2009. www.cepp.utm.my 1.1 HISTORICAL MILESTONE The idea of formation was crystallized (October 1984) Implementation and coordination unit, JPM approved the appointment of foreign consultant (1989) UTM and Energieconsulting Heidelberg, Germany were appointed as consultants (October 1991) The consultants decided to design pilot plants for herbal/phytochemicals and biproducts development (April 1992) MPKSN supported the project for future technology development of natural resources (September 1994) EPU approved RM 35 million for CEPP development (April 1995) JPA Approved 45 Positions for CEPP (March 1998) CEPP Officially become centre of Excellence (June 1998) Received RM4.5 million from Islamic Development Bank for additional procurement (2005) Official Launching of CEPP by the Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Hj. Ahmad Badawi (June 2005) Received RM37 million from the Ministry of Finance for the setting up of Johor Bioproduct Validation Centre (2006) www.cepp.utm.my VISION “To be a leading centre in research and business development of specialty chemicals and biochemicals” MISION “To be an Innovative Specialty Chemical Research & Business Development gp prosperity p y and benefits from country y natural Centre committed to creating resources for the nation through sustainable process technology….. RESEARCH THEME BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR WELLNESS ~ Solving human problem by providing an avenue and opportunity to upgrade the socio-economy ~ www.cepp.utm.my OBJECTIVES Research and Business Development 1. Utilising semi-industrial scale process equipment with flexible utility supports for : • o Process and product development o Scaling up process o Plant optimization and troubleshooting o Shelf life testing and standardization Availability of a large pool of engineers and scientists o • • Multidisciplinary input from local and overseas universities, R&D institutions and industries Various modes of implementation o Joint research o Contract research o Private research to be carried out by industry personnel only Using government and private funding scheme o Industrial Grant Scheme (IGS) o Intensification of Research Priority Areas (IRPA) o ITAF CRDF, ITAF, CRDF TAF TAF, etc etc. o Company sponsored Life Long Learning • For all levels from plant operators to managers o Human Resource Development Board (HRDB) – Approved Training Provider (No.0451) – PROLUS and SBL Schemes • o SMIDEC (Skill Upgrading Programme) – Approved Training Provider o Staf from more than 300 local and overseas companies have attended our training programmes Focus on PROCESS TECHNOLOGY, PLANT TECHNOLOGY, HERBAL PROCESSING AND FORMULATION, BIOTECHNOLOGY and HOLISTIC THERAPI • • Awards o Certificate of Attendance/Completion/Competency o Master and Doctorate levels (by research) o MSc. In Process Plant Management – flexible part time modular or full time In-house or at various centres www.cepp.utm.my Technology h l Dissemination 1. Act as a centre for transfer, adaptation and assimilation of new technologies; as well as a catalyst for better acceptance of new technologies 2. Act like a catalysts and focal point for Technology Park. 3. To increase awareness and appreciation of science and technology and to provide most favorable climate for invention and innovation processes 4. Act as a one stop resource and reference centre for specialty chemical and biochemical industry Project Development and Market Testing 1. Provide an avenue for the industry to develop, evaluate and appraise their processes, equipment, chemicals, catalyst and processes 2 To produce the following items and services; 2. - Chemical products as sample for further investigation - Chemical products for sale during the realization stage and prior to the completion of the industrial plant. This will allow for market studies and profit returns at an early stage of an industrial development with the possibility of developing further stages out of the initial proceeds for the projects 3. Undertaking contract manufacturing of certain specialty chemicals whose small volume is uneconomical to build a plant. Industry can outsource specific chemicals from the pilot plant. www.cepp.utm.my CORPORATE STRUCTURE www.cepp.utm.my Value Chain of Business Development in CEPP CEPP Wellness Centre and Living Active Wellness Shop as A Business Outlet Product Analysis Product Formulation Raw Material processing Herbal Plantation, UTM 7 www.cepp.utm.my CEPP’S CEPP S R&BD FOCUS AREAS (expertise) CEPP has prioritize the research areas according to the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) : Pemprosesan dan Pemb Pembungkusan ngk san Makanan (Food Processing and Packaging) Pewangi Pe angi dan Perasa (Flavour and Fragrance) Fitokimia dan Herba (Phytochemical & Herbal) Biofarmasiutikal (Biopharmaceutical) Kejuruteraan Rekabentuk (Design Engineering) Biobaja (Biofertilizer) R&BD Biopestisid (Biopesticide) Mikrobiologi dan Fermentasi (Microbiology & Fermentation) Nutrasiutikal (Nutraceutical) Minyak Pati (Essential Oil) Oleokimia (Oleochemical) Kosmesiutikal (Cosmeceutical) www.cepp.utm.my RESEARCH GRANTS IRPA BOTTOM UP RESEARCH PROJECTS 1.
