Some Good Solutions To
: ic
Spectacle Wearers' Problem
li
0 1
..t /
REF: March Hobie Forum Letter,
"ATTENTION EYEGLASS WEARERS"
Holding spectacles on active people has been a problem in the
past and will probably continue to be in the future. The best
solution to this problem is contact lenses, and with the many
new lens designs available today, more and morepeopleare able
to wear contact lenses with comfort and good vision.
If it happens youare not compatable with contactlenses, allis
not lost. One possibility is an athletic strap for spectacles. This
is a strip of elastic with attachments on the ends which are
securedto the endsof the spectacle temples. The strap thenruns
behind the head to hold the glasses tight.
Athletic straps can break and if yourglasses fallin thewater,
they will sink. To get around this problem. there are flotation
devices called EYEGLASS FLOATS [from Hilsinger Corp.}
which attach to the temples of glasses and provide flotation to
your glasses. They are also brightly colored and easy to spot
floating on the water.
Another alternative is to use a sport spectacle frame called
AQUA-SEE for your prescription lenses. These frames are
goggle-like and fit snuggly around the eyes. They are held in
place with a strap which goes around the head and are available
from Younger Optical.
All of these materials are available from your optometrist. If
he does not have them, he can special order them for you from
the above listed companies.
Dr. R. L. Baker/Optometrist/Iron Mountain, Michigan
I sympathize with Wolfgang Hardt [Hobie Forum, March '76}
and all Hobie sailors that wear glasses and are afraid to lose
them. I have a quick, easy solution that may be helpful: Attach a
large, bright-colored fishing bobber to your glasses. Then, if
your glasses fall in the water they will float if attached well to
thebobber. If thebobberisbrightcolored. itgives youandothers
"passing by" a chance to spot the glasseseasierinthewater. You
may look funny witha bobberon yourglasses, but it'11 be worth
it if you lose your glasses when you're out sailing.
Bruce Watson/Clear Lake, Minnesota

Capital Bicentennial Regatta
July 3 & 4, Washington, D.C.
Be where the actionis! Celebrate the Bicentennial in Washington
with a special Hobie regatta on the Potomac River in view of the
Nation's Capital and many of Washington's famousmonuments.
As there is so much to see and do in Washington and nearby
historic Alexandria, Virginia, why not combine regatta fun with
sightseeing and plan to stay a few days.
We have reserved a block of rooms for regatta participants in
the Olde Colony Motor Lodge, a Best Western Motel in
Alexandria, less than a mile from the Washington Sailing
Marina by direct parkway, launching area for the regatta. For
those desiring to add sightseeing to the regatta, we have reserved
a few extra rooms for the period 28 June through 9 july. Because
rooms are nearly impossible to find, we will accept reservations
only from regatta entrants and ona first request received basis.

LETTERS
»« f to the Editor...
WILL THE WOMEN
PLEASE SPEAK UP!
Dear Ed:
I agree with the letter from Sharne
Hampton which appeared in the jan/
Feb '76 issue of the Hot Line. You
have shown women to be excellent
crevv members, but not one word
about female captains. The Miami
fleet has several verycapable female
captains who race, not to mention
those females sailing but not competing as captains. It's time you
change your male chauvinist position and show us some capable
women at the tiller. Believe me,
there are many around!
mona Morin
Miami, Florida
DEAR ILLONA... AND
WOMEN EVERYWHERE:
Good Grief! Am I destined to
become the world's first male
chauvinist WOMAN? Believe me,
I would like nothing betterthan to see
more female skippers featured in the
Hot Line but, alas, rarely receive any
intormation about them. When 1 do,
however, I'm more than happy to
print it-just ask the women of the
Hawaii Hobie Cat Assoc. who sent
me photos and a write-up about
their "Wahine" Regatta, an event
where the captains were all females.
This appeared in the Jan/Feb '76
Issue.
You say there are many capable
women skippersaround. Butwhoare
they? And where are they? Come on,
ladies, make yourselves known!... .
blow your own homs!... and get me
out of this predicament!
Mrs. Ed
LESSER OF
THE TWO EVILS
Dear Ed:
I am an ardent fan of Hobie Cats,
but would like to point out one
difficulty 1 experience in maneuvering the tiller extension. With the
present arrangement ( main sheet
block in front of tiller crossbar),
the tiller extension must be passed
around behind the boat, and this
is sometimes a difficult operation.
If the main sheet block were located
behind the tiller crossbar,
the tiller extension could then be
swung around in front and would no
longer present a problem,
I. Scott Moseley
Austin, Texas
Dear J. Scott:
Admittedly, having to pass the
tiller extension around behind the
main sheet block Is sometimes a
hassle, but believe me, It Is a lot
easier than the alternative. Passing
the tiller extension over and across
the trampoline can really be a sceneIt gets caught on lines, hung up on
hiking straps, and if there's someone
on the boatwith you, they'll probably
get stabbed a few times if theyaren't
knocked off Into the water first.
And If you're trying to attempt this
maneuver during the heat of a race,
the problem is, of course, greatly
multiplied.
When Hoble went to design a tiller
crossbar and extension arrangement
he tried It both ways. He concluded
that NEITHER arrangement was
entirely hassle-free, so he chose
the "lesser of the two evils" and
took the back route.
Ed
Dear Ed:
Since Hobie has been purchased
by the Coleman Company, we
thought you might enjoy seeing our
Hobie 14 "trailer" that sleeps six.
We rigged up the "trailer"-a
compact Coleman camper-to go to
the Midwinters West in San Felipe,
Mexico earlier this year and it
worked great!

THE CAT WITH
NINE LIVES
Dear Ed:
Traveling to regattas of over
an hour's distance, I usually
piggyback my Hobie 14 on a friend's
boat to share expenses and save
parking spaces. Heading for the
Mid-winters East, as we were going
down the entrance ramp to
Interstate-75. I suddenly turned
around to see my boat blowing off
the trailer. It landed on its rudders,
turned upside down and skidded toa
grinding halt. I felt sick to my
stomach as I ran back to my 14
to assess the damage. I could see
the whole weekend going up in
smoke. Both rudder pins had
snapped Ifortunately they weren't
aluminum ) and a tiller end cap was
pulled loose. The mast step was
ground down and there was minor
fiberglass damage. It was hard to
believe, but there was no structural
damage to the hulls, spars, or
castings, although my rudders were
were filed down to a funny shape
from dragging on the road.
All was not lost, though. With new
rudder pins-and rather strange
looking rudders-I placed Gth in
B Fleet, which I am very happy
about, especially considering the

When Jack Kaufman of Steamboat Lake Marina, our
new Hobie dealer in Clark, Colorado, called to tell us he'd
arranged a.great promotional stunt-sailing a Hobie Cat
down the ski slopes at Steamboat Springs-we could
hardly believe it.
"You're going to do what?! Who in·the world would
you ever get to do a crazy thing like that?"
6,7,
i ve already got a guy. He's really stoked on the idea...
it's all set up for next week."
"Now wait a minute, Jack. We know the Hobie Cat is a
durable little boat, but it just wasn't designed to go
barreling down some mountainside! And besides, even if
the boat could make it, there's only one person we know
,7
who's radical enough to even attempt it, and"Billy Kidd?"
"Yeah. But you'll never convince-"
"That's my man!"
"We should have, guessed..."
Two weeks later we received a letter from Jack and,
much to our amazement, photos of Billy Kidd actually
"ski-sailing" a Hobie 14 down the Steamboat slopes. "He
was great," wrote Jack, "the crowd went wild! John
Oliver, a Steamboat Ski Instructor, was watching our
fiasco-I mean, eventful filming-and has already placed
his order fora Hobie Cat 16. Billy saiditwas great funand
that the boat was surprisingly easy to maneuver. I think
we've started a new recreational craze!"
Maybe so, Jack, maybe so. Before we all run out to try
this new sport, though, we've got a question for you... to
get to the top, do we take the rope tow, the chair lift or the
gondolaPPP

3 -Grand invested in your Hobie Cat, and you can
use it 50 days a year. Sure, you could use one of
those stiff, thick rubber diving suits for protection
against cold, but the restriction of movement just
isn't worth is.
O'Neill, the movement people, design 1/8"
neoprene protection that gives complete freedom.
We offer 25 years of surfing design to the sailing
world.
To many, neoprene protection rhymes with
restriction. At O'Neill, we think in blank verse.

HOBIE CAT CLASS WILL
BE PART OF USYRU
h
REGIONAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
Four United States Yacht Racing Union Regional Youth
Championships have been scheduled for this summer. The
regattas, which will be held for the first time, will be the
championships for the New England, Middle Atlantic, Southeast
and California regions.
The bring-your-own-boat regattas will be open to all sailors
who will not have turned 20 during 1976. Youngsters may participate in more than one of the championships. Management will
be by host clubs, and locally popular one-design classes will be
used. Among the classes used at the four championships will be
the Laser, Sunfish, HOBIE CAT, Force Five, Fireball, Flying
Junior, Lightning, M-Scow and Y-Flyer.
In addition to three to five race regattas, racing seminars will
be conducted by guest experts.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, at Kings Point, N.Y., has
donated a "best performance" prize for each championship.
When he announced the Regional Youth Championship
program in February, USYRU president Lynn Stedman ]r. said
that the championships would parallel the Sears Cup
eliminations, in which only one juniorcrew from each yacht club
may participate. In the regional championships, the only restric- tion on participation is the "under 20" age limit.
In addition, Stedman said, "The championships are significant because they will permit USYRU to demonstrate its
concern for the local club and sailor by helping to run these
important regattas. Many sailors have thought that USYRU was
only concerned with national and international championships,
but here we aregoingtothe regions andclubsand asking how we
can help them."
'
Yacht clubs and associations interested in hosting regional
championships for young people in the Pacific Northwest, Texas
and Plains States, and Midwest regions should contact the
following: john Rousmaniere, Room 600,50 West 44th Street,
New York, New York 10036, Phone (212) 391-1000.
The scheduled regattas will all be held over summer weekends.

THE "HOW TO" BOOK FOR RACING HOBIE SKIPPERS
¥
"The Playboy
Boat Stable"
t.
In the July issue of Playboy, writer Brock Yates presents the
Playboy Boat Stable, a select fleet of six boats-ranging in
length from 9 feet to 58 feet, and in price from $1000 to
$350,000-which should fill every water-borne need.
One of the six boats featured is our Hobie Cat 16 ( ta da!}, and
while Brock didn't see fit to give us the centerfold spread-this,
alas, went to the $350,000 Bertram 58-he did write a real nice
review about the whole Hobie Scene. In capsule form this
includes: Hobie ("the most laid-back tycoon in the historyof the
Dow Jones Industrials");.our regatta program ("Whereas most
sailboat racing is bound up in the tight-ass world of yacht clubs,
arcane rules, and stiffly fanatical competitors, Hobie Cat racing
is decidedly relaxed and open-ended..,"}; our "family-style"
races ("totally loose beach scenes: beer, open fires, kids, wifes,
girlfriends and lots of good-natured competition"J; our sailors
("one can find Hobie Cat Freaks in such unsally spots as
Valparaiso, Indiana, and Wichita, Kansas...these thousands of
Hobie freaks are part of a fraternity that has its own publication [Hobie Hot Line ) and hundreds of parties and regattas"};
and last but not least. the boat itself ("...flying on one hull, it
produces some of the most superjazzed, pumped, stoked, totally
freaked fun on the water imaginable."}.
If you're interested in taking a look at the article, the July issue
will be on sale at newsstands June 15.

The slot formed between the leach of the jib and the main is
perhaps the most critical single consideration of sail trim on the
Hobie 16. The proper slot is determined by proper jib trimsomething that is difficult to achieve.
The Chinese, who have sailed full-batten crafts for many years,
have written this proverb: 'Tib tac 10, blake hi, tad hi, blake 10." No, it
doesn't mean, "Keep shovelling or we'11 throw you in the wall."
Allow Kimsan to translate.
Many things control the jib-main slot on the Hobie 16 or any iibheaded rig. Too much batten pressure causes hooking, for
example: but primarily, there are three factors: Sheet tension;
traveler car position; and leach curve to foot cup relationship.
The first and most important factor is to acquire proper lib shape.
This has,' as its control, that angle (in profile) 01 lead 01 the jib sheet
off the Iuff of the sail from the clew plate. Background: (see
Diagram #1 ) On monohulls, from the dew, the jib sheet leads or
reeves through a lead block, usually, along the rail of the boat. This

sheet then goes through a tuining block and back to the drum of
the coffee grinder or winch. When a jib is hanked on and hoisted,
with sheet reeved, we put the boat hard on the wind and move the
lead block forward or aft to get the proper relationship between
leach curve and foot curve or cup. If the lead block is too far
forward, the curve of the leach is tightened and reduced to the
point where it backwinds the main, chokes off the slot and kills the
"steam guage" or boat speed. If the Iead block is too far aft, the cup
of the foot id reduced, incidental; but the leach of the sail sags off,
has too much curve, and opens up the slot too far. Fact is, there ain't
no slot at all. You've got a hole that looks like a driveway for Ralph
Ryder's fleet
Conclusion: Angle oi lead is very important to performance oi
sail building a good slot The Hobie 16 has no provision for moving
such a lead block forward or aft on the boat. BUT-isn't it iust
possible that by initially setting the tack of the jib lower or higher,
we can vary that angle of lead to obtain the rightleach curvetofoot

cup relationship, and thus obtain proper sail shape? Now sheet
tension and traveler car position can do what they're supposed to
do, and with a well-shaped jib
O.K., how does one tell a well-shaped jib and proper jib sheet
lead or tack positioning or height off thebridle? That's easy! Rule of
Thumb: After lead block is set bring boat slowly to luff with sheets
in close-hauled position. The entire hoist of. the lib luff should
"break" simultaneously. If it breaks aloft first, the lead block is too
far aft If it breaks on deck first the lead block is too far forward. One
can experiment by merely hand holding the jib sheets in light air.
'But" says some smart sailor. "full-batten sails don't show a luff
too well. The batten pressure towards the luff wire tends to hold sail
shape instead of allowing that first minute flutter of a luff one is
looking for."
"I'll buy that," says the Coach, "Let's have at it with some more
"goodies", and see if we can fox the fox."
"Panel yarns/" Right on!
From a friend who knits, get. a length of black wool yarn; no
synthetics, static electricity will make the yarns cling to a dry sail
and thus not give us the reading we're looking for. Cut six pieces
10" long. Swipe a darning needle and install the yarns, centered
vertically, on each panel, about 15 to 20 percent of the chord of the
sail at that point, aft from the luff (see Diagram #2). Center theyarns
5" on each side of the sail, and tie a half hitch on each side to hold
the yarn centered. Be sure the yarn ends can't reach any stitching
or seams when extended, or they will hang up. Trim to prevent this.
NOT THE SAIL, YOU DOE DOE, THE YARNS!
As a starting point for jib height adjustment hoist themain, and
downhaul. Hoist the jib in such a position that when both sails are

PROPER JIB TRIM
Continued
sheeted, the number 1 batten (bottom'batten) of th-e main is about
the same height as the number 1 batten of the jib Adjust jib tack
with tack shackle on forestay chain plate to get this relationship.
This is best tested in light airs, 3 to 7 knots, and flat seas. Roaring to
weather, double trapezed, in 25-knot winds, isn't the easiest way to
see a jib break at the luff.
Set your jib so all panel yarns are streaming aft. You can see, in
moderate light, the shadow of the lee yarns through the lib. your
boat is close-hauled, weight forward, sterns out, and slicing to
weather like a 12 meter. Plug those bows in till the sterns are out,
that's the way to fly in the "lights". Important: If the lee panel yarns
aloft are flaky, not streaming aft, loosen the sheet ih" at a shot. See
what we mean? All the panel yarns are streaming aft. The whole
thing, all of the sail, is working. Conversely, if the top windward
yarns are flaky, sheet in 1/2" at a time.
Moment of Truth... Slowly, slowly, oh so slowly, let the boat come
to luff. All the windward panel yams should start to flutter simultaneously. If the top breaks first, the tack is too low. If the bottom
breaks first the tack is too high. Re-set the tack by slacking the
halyard and changing the shackle one hole in the chain plate
adjuster. If the conditions are as we suggested-light air, smooth
sea-do this with the boat headed downwind, main traVeler
trimmed in, and main sheeted. This makes standing out on the bow
with one foot on the bridle less of a prerequisite for the Metropolitan
Opera.
When you have the jib set, look at the slot, get to know what it
looks like, estimate the distance between each batten tip of the jib
and the pocket of the main. Now, horse around. Move the jib
traveler out one notch. More speed, less speed? Watch the angle of
the bow wakes; the less angle off the bow, the more speed. Get the
bows going at their fastest speed, panel yarns streaming, and sheet
the jib hard. See the slot close, and the boat speed die. Now move
back to maximum speed, push the car way out, and feel the boat
once again groan and die. Set things back to maximum speed.
Slack the Jib sheet one inch, and watch how the top windward
yams will start to flutter and the boat speed drop. Now you're
beginning to learn one of the fascinating aspects of that boat you
own: it is extremely sensitive and responsive to increment
adjustments.
Whether you race or not, the proper jib setting in dying evening
air can mean the difference between sailing or paddling home. So
often, one sees a boat poorly set up with no effort by the skipper to
get the maximum out of his rig, When queried, his remarks are
usually, "I don't race," or, "I only paida pittanceforthe boat." Allow
me to zap that right now. In the drifters, it's either push it or paddle
it!
Put a little of yourself into your Hobie. Learn by experiment.
Become friendly with its intricate design for performance and
ghostability in light air as well as its ability to slam to weather and
scream a reach in the heavies.
Your Hobie 16 wants to perform for you. If you race, it wants to
win for you. But you gotta do the tweaking, and you gotta tweak the
right things. Give your boat a piece of you, and you'll derive more
fun and satisfaction from it than a tax rebate.
Review: Install panel yarns; set tack height to get proper leach
curve to foot cup relationship; start out with number 1 batten of
main lined up with number 1 batten of jib; sail to weather in light
air, smooth sea; tweak tack till panel yarns all stream; horse around
and settle in your mind iustwhere the speed button is; then geton it,
and nail it down!
This way, you 71 be happy, your sci'lmaker will be happy, Hobje
will be happy, your fellow sailors will be amazed and wondering
where you hid the engine, and if you race, your competitors will be
eyeballing your boat for no-no's.
Always remember: There is nothing worse than seeing a jib
hung like a piece of laundry with too much wringer time.
Oh, yes! In case you haven't figured it out, here is the derivation
of the Proverb...
If: Jib tack foo low
Foot flat
Leach sag

Hobie Fleet #66 of Phoenix held their annual Ides Of March
Points Regatta on March 13 and 14. What looked like a fantastic
weekend of racing, because of a cold front moving in from the
west coast, turned sour. On Friday there was a fantastic 25 MPH
wind and the early arrivals had fun playing and doing some lastminuteboat tuning. That evening, however, thewinddied, notto
be seen again all weekend.
A nice long course was set on Saturday morning by Barry
Weiler, who did an excellent job of running this no-wind regatta.
At 9:30, the skipper's meeting was called and the racers were told
what to expect as far as course shortening in case the wind
would not put in an appearance.
The first of five scheduled races got underway around 10:30
a.m. The wind still refused to blow, so it was a drifter. After the
first boats rounded "A" mark, action was taken to shorten the
A-C-finish course. Otherwise. it would have taken all day to
finish one race. The sun god was on our side, though, and
temperatures were about 80°. Bob Seaman won "A" fleet in the
first race with a comfortable lead.
A super hamburger lunch that was included in the $5 entry fee
was served by Cindy Hager and several helpers. One California
racer was heard to exclaim that if he didn't have the burger in his
hand, he wouldn't have believed it!
Around 4:00 p.m., little puffs of wind started and a vote was
taken... the boys came to race, so they said they would take a run
at it. A very short course was set and off they went... slowly. By
the time the first boats rounded the mark, it was getting late and
a decision was made to abandon the race so everyone could get
their sails down before dark.
Sunday morning dawned sunny and there was wind at 7:00
a.m. The skipper's meeting was at 9:00 and anew, shortercourse
wasset. Then the wind died again. Such is lakesailing; payyour
money and take your chances. The race committee went out and
sat for an hour and a half, waiting. Finally some light air came
up, the horn was sounded. and a race was started, Two hours
later the leaders came back to the finish. And what a finish it
was. Terry Abair, a dark horse from Phoenix, and Bob
Beauchamp, from California, ghosted toward the finish line with
Beauchamp's bow only inches ahead of Abair. Cries of
encouragement from the partisan crowd on shore urged Abair
on. but he needed a little puff to pull it off and it never came.
Beauchamp won to take second for the event. Bob Seaman was
about 20 yards behind, but his third, with a first in the first race,
gave him the overall win for 16'A's.
Mack Wright bested Rich Jeffries two-for-two to take the
14'A's. james Grimes won the 16'B's and Arizona took home all of
the gold in the 16'C's-C. Guarino from Tucson won, with Rene
Catalano and Bill George, both of Phoenix, taking second and
third.
Walnut plague trophies, provided by Tucson Fleet #90, were
awarded to the first three finishers'in each fleet.

SPITZ SPORTS
No. 4 CHARTRES
LAKE ST. LOUIS, 63367
HOTLINE/JUNE 1976
19
About the best waters in the world for Hobie Catting
are those in Hawaii. Warm tradewinds, 80-degree water
temperature, sparkling clear blue and green seas have made
Hobie sailing and surfing Hawaii's number one water sport.
The first Hobie Cat 14 World Championship was held here
in 1973 and it was one of the greatest regattas we've ever had.
During the week of November 1 - 7, 1976, Hawaii will
once again be the focal point of sailing action-as Hobie Catters
from all over the world come together to compete in the.
FIRST HOBIE CAT 16 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.
We're really excited about 6ur first 16 Worlds, and know you
will be, too, when you see the great plans we have in store!
Hosting the event will be the world renowned
Outrigger Canoe Club, hosts of the 1973 Worlds.
Situated right on Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head looming
in the background, the Outrigger is truely the "pole position"
and we are very fortunate to have their support. Complete
Club facilities are being made available to all pre-qualified
skippers, and family guest memberships are available to all
other Hobie skippers at a modest fee of $20 per family.
Plan now to work your vacation around these dates
and get set for What is certain to be the most exciting
sailing event of the year. All packages commence on Sunday,
October 31, and are a week, eleven days or two weeks.
The basic costs are from the West Coast and are planned
on Pan Am's 747 Jet Service. Low costs are presently being
prepared from overseas and various points in the U.S.
Please contact Patrick Hogan at Studio City Travel,
12192 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, Calif. 91604 for details.
Phone: (213) 766-3100.
To reserve, please send $100 deposit for each person,

88 Hobies Battle Whitecaps At Folsom Lake Regatta
88 Hobie Cats registered to do battle at Folsom Lake April 3
and 4 in Division III's first points regatta of the 1976 season. The
event was sponsored by Fleet #17, of Sacramento.
Three races were finally completed on Saturday in light and
variable wind conditions and then everybody returned to the
beach to drink wine and beerandhope forsome windon Sunday.
No skipper could have called Folsom Lake a mill pond on
Sunday, though-the lake was white-capped with 15 to 20 mph
winds, which made ideal sailing conditions for three races even
though it was a little cold. It was a long beat to the windward
markand with superlong courses the winners really worked for
I
their trophies.
Kirk Ieffries of Inland Sailing Company, Sacramento's new
Hobie dealer, really helped to make Fleet #17's first points
regatta a success. The fleet is stoked to have a dedicated Hobie
Cat skipper as a dealer and they look forward to working with
Kirk at future events.
On Sunday, with the winds up, several boats were dismasted
and quite a few went over. Thanks to quick rescue work in a 13'
Zodiac. generously provided by Wally's Water World Of
Sacramento, no skippers or crew were injured.
(For regatta results see page 38.)

In fact we cared for most of the fiberglass
boats made before they were even released
from their molds.
For over twenty years Meguiar's Mirror
Bright mold release wax has put the O.E.M.
slick look on virtually all new fiberglass
boats.
Now, after years of.testing, Meguiar's offers
the only new line of cleaners, waxes and
polishes exclusively for fiberglass.
Meguiar's products fight and remove
oxidation and water spots, and protect all
boat surfaces from sun, salt and age.
Yes, we care for a lot of boats... shouldn't
yours be one of them? You have a great boat,
now get the best to keep it looking new

Settingfor the challenge series is the waters of the North Lake at Silver
Lakes, the new resort community owned by McCulloch Properties,
Inc.,116 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Hobie Cats at Silver Lakes Resort add color and excitement
to this new California high desert community each month when
'
the Silver Lakes Challenge Cup Series is contested between
Southern California's top Hobie 14 and 16 skippers. The 10month series, which got underway February 22, is the first fleet
challenge event ofits kind and offers more than $3,000 in cash to
participating fleets. The four Southern California fleets fighting
for the cash and trophies are Long Beach Fleet #3, San Diego
· Fleet #4, Marina del Rey Fleet #57, and Oxnard Fleet #15.
Once a month, each fleet will sail with its ten best 16-foot
skippers and three top 14-foot skippers. At the end of the 9month eliminations, the top two boats in the 16-foot class and
top boat in the 14-foot class for each fleet will be matched in the
Championship Finals which will be held in November to
determine overall fleet winner and winners of the Silver Lakes
Perpetual Challenge Cup.
Monthly fleet winners ( the winning club) will receive $200 to
add to their club's treasury; runner-ups receive $100. Individual
class winners will receive trophies.
Fleet winners in the Championship Finals will earn $500; the
- runner-up, $250. The winning skippers will receive trophies and
the Silver Lakes Challenge Cup, a perpetual trophy, will be
engraved with the winning fleet name and remain on display at
the Racquet Club.
In setting up this series, Silver Lakes agreed to offer the partiCipating fleets limited use of their other facilities including: golf
course, use of pools, sauna at hotel, a reduced hotel room rate
and, when available, use of tennis courts at the Racquet Club..
They also agreed to set aside a camping area for those sailors
who wanted to make a weekend trip and weren't planning to
stay at the hotel.
Silver Lakes Resort is owned by McCulloch Properties, Inc.,
the same nice people who brought you Lake Havasu City,
Arizona and the London Bridge Regatta.

Pippin PerpetuaL.The forecast of rain did not discourage
the 55 boats from staying away from
Princeton Harbor, Half Moon Bay, for the
second Pippin Perpetual Regatta.
It rained until about 10 a.m. but cleared
up to be a beautiful sunny weekend with
the winds from the SW at 15 to 20. The
racing was done inside the harbor which
made for some smooth fast reaches. The'
race committee did an excellent job of
getting the races off in time with a good
selection of courses. There was plenty of
time both days for th6 Fleet 20 "birdmen"
to showofftheirinsanityand talents with
their Hobie Hawks.
Denny Neilson, 114-A}, walked away
with the perpetual trophy throwing out a
two, with a low point score of 5.
The Pippin ended the way it started by
raining on the trophy presentation.
FLEET No. 52
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota
Fleet #52 is anxiously awaiting another
racing season. At a business meeting held
in late February we elected the new
officers: jim Coomes, President; Jim
Senesac, Vice President; and Janet
Durkee, Secretary-Treasurer.
The ice broke on the lakes three weeks
ahead of "normal" around the Twin Cities
area in Minnesota and this naturally
brought out a few early-bird Hobie
skippers. Our racing season will be
kicked off on Memorial Day weekend
with a three-race series.

March Race...
The seagull promised that our first race
of the season would be one to remember,
but no one realized why! Can you imagine
races on Kerr Lake being cancelled
because' of too much wind?! Well, it
happened. Saturday the winds were 20 to
25 mph with gusts to 41 mph. Swells were
to three feet. The water temperature was
about 50 degrees. The first race was
completed with only a few tip-overs;
however, the second race had to be
cancelled at the start when six boats
capsized simultaneously. For safety
reasons, racing was discontinued for the
remainder of the day. All but one 14' and
one 16' flippedatleastonce. Pauland Gale
Hounshell capsized six times; and the
Petersens, five. Our very special thanks
to Chris Gentile and Macon Council {and
their crews} for their rescue efforts.
Sunday's conditions were just the
opposite of Saturday's. It was a beautiful
day, although it was a drifter. The winds
were 5 to 7 mph and soon diminished to
zero. Each of three races took about an
hour.
All in all everyone had an enjoyable
weekend. The first place honors went to
Dan Williams in the 16' class, and to
Charlie Akers in the 14' class.

Adam Alpert, Vice-Commodore; and Gail
Barr. Secretary/Treasurer.
Our second meeting was a work session
making flags and markers for the
upcoming season.

GEOFF HORSLEY CLAIMS AUSTRALIA'S
HOBIE 16 NATIONAL TITLE
By Peter Johnson
The 1976 Australian Hobie 16 Nationals
were sailed on Botany Bay on the 9th, 10th and
11th ofJanuary. During the three days ofcompetition, conditions varied from strong
southerlies on Friday to light and variable
easterlies on Sunday.
52 Boats from throughout Australia
gathered for the championships, all keen to
win or be highly placed, as the First World
Hobie 16 Titles are being held in Hawaii in *
November this year and the placings in the
National Titles have a large bearing on the
selection of the team sent to represent
Australia.
Interstate competition was of a high
standard this year, with Western Australia
sending 5 boats, Victoria 5, Queensland 7 and
A.C.T. 3.
Overall results were as follows:
1st Geoff Horsley (N.S.W.) "Bobcat 11"
11 34 points
2nd Bill Sykes (N.S.W.) "Mustang Sally"
18 points
3rd Keith Logan (N.S.W.) "Datsuncat"
1834 points
Friday dawned with strong southerly winds
and bleak conditions. Heat 1 was sailed in 2028 knot winds with a very heavy swell and
wave chop. Dave BrAy led early but a broken
rudder ended his chances of winning and
Dennis Keogh, revelling in the heavy conditions, won from defending champion Bill
Sykes. Kim Thomas came in 3rd, with Dave
Bray in 4th spot.
Heat 2 in the afternoon was sailed in 18-20
knot southerly winds with an abating s• Oell
and was an exciting affair for all with a good
reaching leg. Keith Logan kept the field
behind him and won from Geoff Horsley,
V. Sturdy from Queensland, and Bill Sykes.
Saturday morning's race was sailed in
moderate 15-knot winds and clearing conditions. Geoff Horsley, making the most ofsome
wind shifts near the windward mark, won
from Keith Logan and G. Young from W.A.,
with Bill Sykes in 4th place.
The afternoon's race was sailed in slightly
lighter conditions. This race produced the
closest finish of the series. Robin Binnidell
from W.A. led the field for most of the race by
a comfortable margin, but rounding the '
leeward mark with only a windward beat
remaining, Keith Logan, Bill Sykes, Geoff
Horsley, and Dave Bray were all challenging.
Keith Logan's effort ended abruptly when he
had a gear breakage, andI Geoff Horsley
became unstuck when on starboard by Bill
Sykes and he flipped. Sykes began applying
pressure in earnest upon the W.A. crew, but
Binnidell and his attractive female forward
hand withstood the challenge and crossed the
line 1 second ahead of Sykes, with John
Wiltshire sailing into 3rd place.
Sunday morning was fine, with light winds
from the S.E. The start ofthe racewas delayed
as a water ski event had not yet been completed by 10 a.m. This did not go down too
well with the Hobie sailors as the wind was
fading quickly. When the race finally started,
Paul Ridgeway from Victoria went to the lead
and held his advantage until the last leg, when
Geoff Horsley, sailing a good tactical race,
managed to grab the lead close to the line and
win from Ridgeway with Mark Pryke sailing
into 3rd place.
The final race on Sunday afternoon was
sailed in very light E/ NE winds. A strong
current caused some boats problems at the
windward mark, however Paul Ridgeway
from Victoria mastered the fluky conditions
and sailed away from the fleet to win from
Keith Logan, Geoff Horsley, and Don Algie
from the A.C.T.
And so, Geoff Horsley has finally won an
Australian Hobie Title, having been runnerup in the 1974 14'Nationalsand in the 1975 16'
Nationals. An interesting aspect of Geoffs
win, and one which confirms the Hobie to be
basically a class-design boat allowing little
modification, is that Geoff's boat was only
delivered to him 24 hours before the start of
the series. It is also worth noting that Geoff'g
crew, boat owner Bol• -rfoibrs.,hashad limited
sailing experience-Bob being better known
in sporting circles for piloting Holden
Torana's around racing circuits at aboveaverage speeds. Well done. Geoff and Bob!

2nd Annual Nanakuli Hobie Cat Regatta
By Lynne McEIhaney
. As .Hawaii's Hobie .sailors, crews and families
packed up their camping necessities and trailered their
boats in heavy wind and rain, it is doubtful whether
there was much enthusiasm for a two-day campout
regatta. Luckily, Oahu's leeward shore, known for it's
dryness, pulled through-and though it was not
completely sunny, at least we had found the only spot
on the island where it wasn't pouring! Thus; the 2nd
Annual Nanakuli Hobie Cat Regatta, April 10th & 11th,
got off to a good start.
Although we had left the rain behind, we unfortunately couldn't say the same for the wind. Nanakuli is
usually noted for its very light, variable breezes: most
of the wind is blocked by the Waianae mountain range
that skirtsthe shoreline. Not so this Saturday morning!
The winds continued to steadily build so that the race
committee deemed it necessary forthe Hobie 16sailors
to reef their mains. A first In HHCA history, reefing
proved to be quite an interesting chore. Everyone had
their own system, but after. an hour of trial and error • •
most boats had something which reasonably.
resembled the reefed-main pictures we had seen in
magazines!
What was supposed to be a long distance race
Saturday afternoon was cut to a double triangle course ·
for safety reasons. Even with three chase boats, our
race committee didn't want to'take any chances on
having to pursue drifting boats to Japan in case of
breakdowns.
Boats left the beach with skippers and crews a bit·
apprehensive-especially those in the B and C fleets.
But no one really realized what they were in for until it
was too late. Even the most seasoned sailors found

sn'BURN
of that "in" tan also adds a tremendous increase in the chances of skin
cancer.
The best prevention of skin damage is to limit the sun exposure to
short periods until a resistance is built up. Doctors discourage a
continued roasting in the sun on boats, where the rays bombard the skin
more fiercely than on the beach. For one reason, the sea air clears out
much of the haze, producing a stronger ray and, second, the total is
increased by reflection from water, sails, and decking. Yachtsmen from
the Southern California smog belt often find themselves badly burnt,
even after they thought they were prepared, when they sail in another
area with a clear atmosphere.
Two types of protection are commercially available: tanning agents
and screening agents. Tanning agents are just what they sound like: a
balance of protection and moisturizers to achieve a tan. Screening
agents are usually opaque, and prevent the rays from passing through.
Folk remedies such as mineral oil and baby oil have little value,
except to preve'nt the skin from drying while it burns, since ultraviolet
penetrates them easily. The best and safest protection is from creams
that contain Paraminobenzoic acid or one ofits compounds. Examples
of this type are Sea & Ski and Skreen. The traditional screeningagent is
zinc oxide, which has the added feature of the white color so that you
know when it·is wearing off.
In the critical burning hours of mid-day, tanning or screening agents
should be applied every two hours at the least. Be sure to cover every
area that can be reached by the sun-including the often painfully
forgotten ears. Both the short-haired and the balding should take
special precautions, since the scalp burns quickly.
Lips are also vulnerable and need protection. Lipstick is a good
coveriyg for women, while Blistex, Lipsyl, or Sea & Ski lipsalve can help
the men. For early season protection, zinc oxide or A-Fil are the old
standbys.
Various medicatiods can create a photosensitivity of the skin, often
causing severe burns after only a short exposure. Some deodorant soaps
and cosmetics may contain additives which cause this sensitivity, with
By CHRIS CASWELL
In case you hadn't noticed, molting season is fast approaching. For
those ofyou whojustspent the winterinthe Bahamas orwhomaintaina
dark tan all year, stop reading right here. But if you're from one of the
colder suburbs, fishbelly pale and ripe to start peeling skin from your
nose, then here are some ways to stave off the crinkly agonies of
sunburn.
Unlike a mystery story, let's gei the who-dun-it out of the way first.
Obviously, the sun is the guilty culprit. Sunlight, or rather its short
ultraviolet rays, are the perpetrators of sunburn.
The body's outer layer of skin acts as a shield, and prevents about 80
percent of the ultraviolet rays from penetrating. If the body is constantly
exposed to extreme amounts of sunshine, the surface • kin actually
thickens to add even more protection.
The 20 percent of harmful rays that do reach the skin produce a type
of radiation burn, with the most common symptom being a reddening
or"sunburn." In an attempt to protect itself, the body produces colored
kranules of pigment which appear to the eye as a tan. Each person,
depending upon his coloration, reacts differently to the sun's rays. Pale
or fdir skins burn rapidly and frequently, while darker complexions
provide better protection.
Regardless of the complexion, everyone is affected by the sun. The
pink blush from overexposure is actually a first degree burn, while
prolonged exposure will produce second degree burns, blistering, and
physical illness. Long term effects, besides a thickening ofthe skin, are a
breakdown in the elastic tissue oftheskin, usually noticeablein the lined
and leathery faces offarmers or other outdoor people. The current quest

hexochlorophene labeled as the chief culprit. One well-known first aid
cream was found to contain an ingredient that increased photosensitivity, and its formula has since been changed. Antibiotics (such as
tetracycline) and tranquilizers (chlorpromazine and trifluoperazine)
may also cause similar problems. If there is any doubt, consult your
physician before too much sun time.
A · number of variables can add or detract from the sun's power to
burn, including latitude, altitude, season, weather conditioris,-aild time
of day. Time of day is the most important, with the ultraviolet rays
filtered heavily in the morning and eveninghours bytheangle ofthesun
through the atmosphere. The mid-day hours are the most dangerous,
and require the maximum protection. Hazy or overcast days are not
necessarily safe, since glare from that "white" afternoon can also
produce aburn.
Clothing is the simplest form of protection. A loose, long-sleeved,
high-collared shirt, long pants, and a wide-brimmed hat can make even
the most scorching day safe. A quick comparison of lower abdomen or
hip areas with hands and face can show graphically the aging effect that
the sun has on skin, and how protection can keep the skin supple and
smooth.
Eyes also need protection, being affected by several types of sun's
rays. Ultraviolet rays, reflecting from the water, can cause a burn ofthe
conjunctiva and the cornea, and severe overexposure can cause
permanent damage or possible blindness.
The second ray is the white light of the visible spectrum or, in
layman's terms, glare. This causes the pupil to contract, which can be
fatiguing over a long period of time. Glare can also affect night vision by
40 percent or more, and this loss of night sight can last for several days.
The primary sources of eye protection are from a good hat and good
sunglasses. The best type of sunglass wraps around the temples, and
protects from reflected side light. Plain gray lenses are best, with the
fancy colored lenses of little use except for decoration. The amount of
darkness is very important, and only 10-20 percent ofthe visible light on
the water should reach your eyes. A rough guide when selecting glasses
_
i.
is to w• a'r them while looking in a mirror: ifyou can see your eyes, they
are too light. Polaroid lenses have a second feature for the yachtsman
besides cutting glare and reflection considerably since they also provide
better visibility into the water itself.
The best relief from sunburn is adequate protection in the first place,
but you'll probably get charred by accident sometime. A local
anaesthetic, such as the Solarcaine creams or sprays, will ease the pain
for short periods of time, and common aspirin will remove some of the
longer agonies, but there reallyjsn't much to help the problem itself. Old
time remedies of oils, butter, and grease do little except keep the skin
moist. Once the peeling begins, be extremely careful to prevent
infection, since the, skin doesn't yet have its full quota of protection. An
ointment, such as Unguentine, can be soothing on localized burns when
held in place by a loose bandage.
Just as they used to say in the old cowboy movies-save your own
skin first. Watch the mid-day hours, protect yourself with creams, and
don't age your skin prematurely with too much sun.

Hobie Fleet #62, based in Fresno, proudly presents Mile High
'76, a Division 111 Points Regatta. The site for this regatta willbe
picturesque Huntington Lake, where the sailboat is king andthe
wind blows steady and strong all day. Situated approximately
70 miles northeast of Fresno, California, 7,000 feet high in the
Sierra Nevadas, Huntington is a sailor's dream.
Last year. 237 boats were on hand for Mile High and that
number is expected to increase so much that the entry list must
be limited this year to 400 boats, due to limited facilities at the
lake. So, pre-register early if you plan on attending this year's
Mile High '76. A special invitation is being extended to the
owners of 10's, 12's and 3.5's to join their bigger brothers in the
thick of competition.
Aprds race entertainment, including a Saturday night party
and bonfire, is being planned to help make your weekend as our
guests a complete and memorableexperience. Camping, whichis
a very enjoyable experience in the Huntington Lake Recreation
Area, will also be arranged with a pre-registration form. So,
don't forget, August 21st and 22nd at Huntington Lake, Mile
High '76 Points Regatta.

HOBIE CLASS ASSOCIATION
FLEET No. 111
Jacksonville, Florida
Many members of Hobie Fleet #111
have already been very active in racing
this year. We finished the Winter Series at
the Rudder Club and are ·now into the
Spring Series. Congratulations go to our
members who won the Hobie classes of
the Annual Mayors Cup Regatta, a 20mile city-limits race held at the Rudder
Club on April 10. In 14's trophies went to:
Don Balthaser, 1st; Steve Frizzell, 2nd;
and Terry Balara, 3rd. In 16's it was Mike
Walsh, 1st; Terry Anderson, 2nd; Phil
Childress. 3rd; Billy Chesnut, 4th; and
Rick Clemenzi, 5th. Besides racing, we
also held a fantastic shrimp and oyster
roast in March, the first of several social
events scheduled for this year.
After a general reorganization of fleet
procedures, it was decided that each
monthly meeting will feature briefings on
racing rules and boat trim. As days
lengthen, a variety of short, informal
races will precede meetings.
The fleet is holding a Hobie Cat Class
Association sailing school in early May,
co-sponsored by Dick Wren of Sailboat
Supply, our local Hobie dealer. We are
also busy with a membership drive and
would like to encourage any interested
Hobie enthusiasts in our area to contact
us through Terry Anderson, our new
Commodore for 1976, at 3055 Kegler
Drive, jacksonville, Florida, 32217, for
information concerning fleet activities
and services.

lake starting at one end and racing a
specified course. No classes-just boats.
There was a rumor going around that the
other boats wanted the Hobies to sail
backwards this year!
The following weekend was the PMSA
Spring Regatta. There was a separate
start for Hobie 16's with silver trays for
the winners.
Our fleet's spring series will begin June
6 and go for six consecutive weeks with
six throw-outs. Anyone interested;

FLEET No. 141
Columbia, South Carolina
Lake Murray, South Carolina was the
scene of Hobie Fleet #141's Second
Annual Ice Breaker points reggtta. The
Fleet-known as the "Capital City
Trampoline Queens"-was fortunate
enough to have the Columbia Sailing Club
host the regatta, and they would like to
thank Mr. Iohn Wrisley for the splendid
job he did as Race Committee Chairman.
Also, they would like to'thank the sponsor
of the event, Valk Sailboat Center, and
their Commodore, Bob Dial.
Incredible winds of 20 to 25 mph on
Saturday gave way to many"war stories"
late that evening after the beer was
opened and the steaks charcoaled. On
Sunday, however just the opposite was
true and skippers had to fight light winds
filled with air pockets throughout the
day's three races.
• The regatta was brought to a close
Sunday by the • presentation of the
handmade trophies by Olin Pate and his
daughter, Valerie May, to the winners.
(For regatta results see page 38.)

FLEET No. 153
Tullytown, Pennsylvania
Gainesville, Florida
Fleet #140 met recently and we all
seemed to have survived the winter
( although a few are as yet unaccounted
for!). We have decided upon the summer
sailing schedule and would like to invite
other Hobies in the area to join us. May 16
was official "put your boat in the water
day" with the Annual Tower Island Race.
This race consists of all the fleets on the
We are now full swing into our 1976
sailing season and our club appears to be
growing faster than last year. We already
have two tremendous regattas behind us
in the Spring Wind Open and the Cedar
Key Cat Challenge. Over the summer we
will sail series races, fun events, surfing
at Crescent, take trips to points regattas
and many other events. The Gainesville
HOTLINE/JUNE 1976
Sailing Club is attempting to get the
Southeast District Fireball Championship and run an open regatta with it. The
Hobies are invited and encouraged to
race, This should be a big regatta. We are
also starting to make plans for a camping
trip to Lake George and the Ocala Forest.
If you haven't joined Fleet #153 yet,
come on out and join us, We have a lot of
new faces and boats this year and all of
you are welcome. You won't find a nicer
bunch of people to enjoy yourself with.

owners and there are probably another 20
to 30 boats in the area we don't even know
of. As you can see, Hobie sailing is a major
sport here and this fleet has a tremendous
potential. For information contact Ginny

their boats uncontrollable in the swirling winds which
gusted to over 40 knots. Almost every boat capsized at
least once trying to make it to the start-skippers even
found it difficult to nurse their boats back to the shore
without being knocked down.
Fortunately, the race was cancelled before anything
disastrous occurred. Boats were unrigged in relief and
sailors sat down to compare notes on the unbelievable
conditions. The highlight of the day was a fantastic
luau complete with kalua pig, chicken long rice,
Haupia, and poi prepared by fleet members Dan and
Charlotte Tamarra and their Nanakuli friends. With full
stomachs, tired sailors settled down for the evening
with hopesthat windconditionswould die bymorning.
It didn't look too likely, though, astents flapped inthe
wind, making sleep difficult.
Skippers awoke early Sunday morning-and lo and
behold-it seemed as if the wind had miraculously
disappeared. Not for long though-the puffs began to
build as boats made their way out to the first of the
three triangular courses to be sailed that day. The first
race was restarted after a drifting mark was reset. By
that time, the wind was really howling and boats
seemed to shudder and almost stand still as the 30- to
35-knot gusts hit. As during the previous day, there
were several capsizes.
The winds died again after lunch and thesecond race
was a complete turnabout of the first, with the
extremely light winds characteristic of this area. Boats
at the right place at the right time picked up what little
wind there was, while others "sat in holes" and barely
moved. The third race was plagued with the same
heavy gusts as the first.
The weekend was concluded by the presentation of
well-deserved trophies to a very tired and battered
fleet. Mahogany-backed brass etchings of Hobies were
awarded to the overall winners of all classes. Herb
Andresen and Albin Lemquist proved that consistency
pays off and with three second places they took top
honors in the 16-A fleet. Red Haywood claimed the
number one spot in the 14-A's with two firsts and a
second. Special trophiesandouterislandtrips, compliments of Hawaiian Air, were presented to winners of
Sunday morning's long distance race: 16's, Dean
Froome and John Driscoll, and 14's Red Haywood.
We would like to extend special thanks to our race
sponsors, Hawaiian Air, Suntory International, Hele
On, and especially the Tamarras and the Nanakuli
Community for making the 2nd Annual Nanakuli Hobie
Cat Regatta a weekend to remember.

fact that I sailed a boat that had
blown off a trailer onto the highway
at 40 m.p.h,!
The strength of the Hobie Cat is
remarkable. I think any other
sailboat would have turned to
splinters had it taken the same fall.
Thanks for making such a durable
boat. I plan to keep my Hobie for a
long time. it's one cat that
definitely has 9 lives!
Sincerely,
Gary Carlton
