Important Information about Shipping TROLLs with Lithium Batteries
The internal battery in some models of the TROLL contains lithium, which regulatory agencies consider to be a hazardous material. Special packaging, labeling,
and documentation are required for shipping the lithium-powered TROLL.
The lithium-powered TROLL must never be transported on passenger aircraft. To
do so is a violation of Federal law (49 CFR 171.2). In-Situ is required by law to
report violations to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Since regulations are subject to frequent changes, we have prepared a separate
leaflet covering packaging, labeling, and shipping requirements. Please read and
observe those instructions if you need to ship your lithium-powered TROLL.

Guidelines and Precautions
• Do guard against electrostatic discharge when connecting the TROLL to the computer. See the ESD precautions on page 18.
• Do install the TROLL below the lowest anticipated water level, but not so low that
its range might be exceeded at the highest anticipated level. The TROLL can withstand up to two times its rated pressure without damage.
• Don’t submerge the communication connector at the end of the cable. Keep it
above the water level.
• Do save packing materials for future storage and shipping. The shipping boxes
have been performance-tested and are the only containers approved by DOT for
shipment of TROLLs with lithium batteries.
• Don’t try to service the TROLL yourself as it contains no user-serviceable parts.
Doing so can cause permanent damage and will void your warranty. The only
removable parts of the TROLL are the nosecone and cable.
• Don’t allow the vented cable to kink or bend too tightly. The minimum recommended bend radius is one inch (2.6 cm).
• Don’t attempt to dig foreign matter from the cavity under the filter.
• Do read Section 4 before setting up the TROLL; it contains information that is
important to avoid damaging your instrument when it is set up.
• The TROLL’s lithium battery is not user-replacable. The unit must be returned to
the factory for a battery replacement. When packaging the TROLL for shipment,
please use care and follow the instructions in In-Situ’s special shipping leaflet.
The lithium-powered TROLL must never be transported on passenger aircraft.
• The networkable RS422 TROLL requires an RS422 serial port or an RS232 to
RS422 converter.
1 Introduction
In-Situ’s Win-Situ™ software, you can set up
many kinds of short-term tests and longterm monitoring schemes customized to
your site and your specific data requirements.
The In-Situ TROLL SP4000 is a compact
downhole instrument for monitoring water
level and temperature in wells as small as 2"
(5 cm). It can be utilized alone or as part of
a wellfield fully instrumented with TROLLs
or other In-Situ data loggers accessible directly or via telemetry.

Win-Situ
Win-Situ is software that enables your
computer to communicate with the TROLL.
The program requires (at a minimum) a
computer with a 386SX processor, running
Microsoft® Windows® 3.1 or later in Enhanced mode, and equipped with a serial
communications port, 4 megabytes of RAM,
a hard disk, VGA compatible 640 x 480
display, and a Windows-compatible mouse or
other pointing device.
Win-Situ has its own operator’s manual, the
Win-Situ User’s Guide. It describes everything you need to know about communicating with the TROLL: installing the software,
setting up tests, collecting data, transferring
data to the computer, displaying, manipulating and graphing data, and more. Win-Situ
also provides On-Line Help.
Wakeup
The TROLL uses a technique called “sleeping” to minimize power consumption and
achieve a battery life measured in years
instead of months. When the instrument is
asleep—whenever there is no immediate
task to perform—only its internal clock
remains active. The TROLL will “wake”
when its internal clock indicates it is time to
take a data point, or when you are directly
communicating with it via Win-Situ.
Quick-Connect Cable
Cable is available in a choice of lengths and
materials. The Quick-Connect™ cabling
system means cable can easily be replaced in
the field to suit different applications.
The Clock
The TROLL maintains an internal real-time
clock, which is used to program and record
the start date and time of tests, and to take
readings at the specified interval.
Using Win-Situ you can set the TROLL’s
clock to the current computer date and time.
Instructions for displaying and setting the
clock are on page 7.
Power
The TROLL is available with a lithium
battery pack (good for up to 750,000 data
points or about 5 years) or an alkaline
battery pack (good for up to 250,000 data
points or about 2 years). Win-Situ can
display the battery type, the approximate
remaining capacity, and the last battery
replacement date. Refer to Section 3 of the
Win-Situ User’s Guide.
Section 1: Introduction
Channels
The TROLL is a two-channel device for
measuring pressure and temperature simultaneously. Using Win-Situ, you can customize the pressure channel to measure depth,
drawdown, or raw pressure, and you can set
up tests that record data from both channels
or from either channel individually.

erasure, deleting is a deliberate, two-step

2 Getting Started
To familiarize yourself with the TROLL we
suggest you follow through the “dry run”
below, using one TROLL in an office setting.
It won’t take long to become familiar with
your TROLL and it is well worth the time
invested to obtain a more complete understanding of the instrument and its operating
software.

Step 1: Attach the Cable
1. Remove the protective caps from the
TROLL backshell and the Quick-Connect
cable connector. Retain the caps to protect
the contacts when the instrument and
cable are not in use.

press tightly. They should slip together

Step 3: Install and Start
Win-Situ
1. Run SETUP on the Win-Situ diskette to
install Win-Situ. For details, refer to Section 1 of the Win-Situ User’s Guide.
2. To start Win-Situ, double-click the WinSitu icon
in the In-Situ Inc. pro-
gram group, or use the Windows 95 Start
Menu to select it from your programs.
Step 4: Configure the Port
The first time you launch the program, WinSitu may request COM port information by
displaying the Port Settings dialog box.
• If you have already set up the COM port,
go to Step 5.
• If this is your first Win-Situ session,
follow these quick steps to configure the
COM port.
1. In the Port Settings window, choose the
Port you want to use.
2. Select a Baud Rate for communications
through this port.
• With more than 500 feet (164 m) of
cable, a low rate will result in more
reliable communication; we suggest
1200 baud.
3. For a single TROLL, select the Direct Connection type.
4. Click OK to close the Port Settings window.

Step 5: “Locate” the TROLL
1. Go to the Network Menu and select Synchronize Baud.

a communication
problem between WinSitu and the TROLL.

suspect is the TROLL’s
battery; try using
external power.

rates, and changes the TROLL’s rate (if
necessary) to match the rate selected for
the port.
2. When the connection is made, the TROLL
icon appears below the port icon.
As soon as the TROLL icon appears, you
can click the Cancel button in the Communication Status box to cut short the
synchronize operation.

Step 7: Define the Probes
Because the Win-Situ–TROLL combination
is a smart one, very little setup is required.
There are two things to bear in mind when
defining probes:
• The TROLL is intelligent enough to give
Win-Situ all the required information.
However, there are a couple of optional
settings you can customize for measuring water levels in specific locations.
• The TROLL stores raw data. After a test

When you are comfortable with the test
definition process, you’re ready to schedule
an actual test, then install the TROLL, and
let the test run itself. Section 3 of this
manual has suggestions for installing the
TROLL in the field.

Section 4 to connect a single TROLL to a

Operating Considerations
The TROLL has been designed to withstand

General Maintenance
Vent Tube
The pressure sensor of the TROLL is specifically designed to be insensitive to barometric
pressure changes. A vent tube has been
incorporated into the cable to assure that
atmospheric pressure is the reference pressure to the sensor diaphragm. With this
design it is essential that the vent tube
not be blocked, kinked, or otherwise
obstructed. If it is, not only will barometric
pressure appear in measurements, but large,
varying errors will be introduced due to
thermal expansion and contraction of air
within the vent tube and probe body.
Filter
A small mesh filter protects the pressure
sensor from dirt and other foreign objects. It
can be seen when the nosecone is off and
appears opaque when clean. If it becomes
clogged with silt, try flushing it gently with a
couple of squeezes from a water bottle. If this
doesn’t do the trick, contact Customer
Service. Don’t try to remove the filter.
Nosecone
If the holes in the nosecone get plugged, take
the nosecone off and clean the holes with a
swab or brush. To replace, first put the wavy

Warranty Provisions
In-Situ Inc. warrants all products sold, excluding
batteries sold with such products, against defects in
materials and workmanship under normal operating
conditions. Such products include data loggers,
probes, and accessories, and are warranted for the
following periods: TROLL 4000s for five years; MultiParameter TROLL 8000s for two years; HERMIT 3000
data loggers for two years; probes for one year; and all
other products, including accessories and cable, for
ninety days. The warranty period for all products
begins on the day the product is first delivered to the
customer.
During the warranty period, In-Situ will repair, or, at
its option, replace at no charge, components that have
proven to be defective during the period of warranty,
provided that the warranted product is shipped,
prepaid, to In-Situ Inc. In-Situ’s Customer Service
staff must be contacted for shipping instructions prior
to shipment.
These warranties do not apply if the warranted
product has been damaged by common negligence,
accident or misuse. These warranties do not apply to
any product that has been repaired, serviced, or
modified by an unauthorized person.
THERE ARE NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS
OR IMPLIED, WHICH EXTEND BEYOND THE FACE

customer, from whatever source, including any

between the delivery price of the product and the

ESD Safety Precautions
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) occurs in air, causing a spark, when the potential
difference between two bodies exceeds the dielectric strength of the air. The TROLL
has built-in protection from damage due to ESD, but no protection is 100% and
precautions should be taken to protect the TROLL and the computer.
When plugging the TROLL into the computer, it is very important for the TROLL, the
computer, and you to be at or close to the potential of the earth.
In the office . . .
1. First, momentarily touch a grounded object to remove any existing static
charge.
2. Momentarily touch the connector on the TROLL cable to a grounded object.
3. Touch the metal DB-9 shell of the communication cable to a metal screw that
holds the Com Port in the computer or the metal shell of the Com Port connector.
Be very careful not to touch the male communication pins in the Com
Port first. A spark down the communication lines could permanently
damage the computer.
4. Now the connection between the TROLL and the computer can be made.
In the field . . .

2. Put the TROLL on the ground.
