An evening with MICHAEL LEUNIG
Internationally acclaimed Australian artist Michael Leunig shares his
love of cartooning and human observation as he talks and draws his
way through an evening of sublime charm and insight. Leunig, who
was declared a national living treasure by the National Trust, has been
drawing for Australian newspapers since 1965.
His published collections of cartoons, poems and prayers, are the
work of a wildly imaginative mind and have been widely adapted in
education, music, theatre, psychotherapy and spiritual life.
Michael Leunig’s disarming powers of observation and simplicity
of communication have made this creative genius a very popular
cartoonist, author and speaker.
For one intimate night at the Glenroy, Michael Leunig will reflect and
open up a discussion with his audience about some of his much-loved
cartoons; how they speak to him and his readers about the profound
mysteries of life and the simplest of joys, thoughts and emotions.
“Michael Leunig is a true original.”

Songs for the Fallen, set in 19th century Paris, is
a glittering piece of cabaret-style music theatre
charting courtesan Marie Duplessis’s life from
poverty to infamy. This is the wild and hilarious tale
of a woman who knew one thing: good girls don’t
make history.
Award winning actor, singer, writer and comedian
Sheridan Harbridge captivates the audience with
her sophisticated yet debaucherous celebration
of mademoiselle’s life. Her startling combination
of deadpan comedy and bravado lends the show
much of its energy and hilarity.
Songs for the Fallen was a smash hit in New York
last year with critics and audiences raving. At this
New Zealand première you are invited to the
decadent final party of the woman who defied
her fate and captured a nation. In the Mayfair
Theatre, “We’re gonna party like it’s 1847. And
it’s going to be HUGE! “

The Devil’s Half-Acre is set in the slums of gold rush era Dunedin, when the
powerhouse of New Zealand lay south of the Waitaki River rather than north of the
Bombay Hills.
It conjures a landscape of brothels, gaming houses and opium dens; a melting
pot of immigrants from all over the world – prostitutes, prospectors, beggars and
conmen, the newly rich and the newly broke, perhaps even the devil himself…
This Faustian tale plays out against a backdrop of political maneuvering in the new
colony, including Julius Vogel’s role in Dunedin politics while editor of the Otago
Daily TImes.
The Devil’s Half-Acre is created by Trick of the Light, the team who delighted
audiences throughout NZ (and the world) with The Bookbinder. After a sell-out
première season at the New Zealand Festival in March, The Devil’s Half-Acre
comes home to where it all took place. This new work, with live music, is early
Dunedin’s story.
The Devil’s Half-Acre was commissioned by the New Zealand Festival.

Beyond the
bright black
edge of nowhere
“...eerie, mysterious and loaded with fuel to
fire conspiracy theories.”
Arts Festival Dunedin
presents the world
première of the dual
presentation of Beyond
The Bright Black Edge of
Nowhere and The Cube.
These UK productions by
Simon Wilkinson are both
based on the same bizarre
true story.
In 1959 eight high school
students and their science
teacher went into the Great
Deep Basin Desert, USA,
never to be seen again.
Letters written by the
students to their parents
were all that was ever
found of them, describing a
journey to “the bright black
edge of nowhere”. The
letters were discovered in
a black wooden cube fifty
miles into the desert.
Shrouded in mystery
and an official cover-up,
Beyond The Bright Black
Edge of Nowhere is a
multi-media play using
1950s film footage, digital
manipulation accompanied
by a live soundtrack

performed by Simon
Wilkinson and Dunedin’s

Bright Black Edge calls into

we receive, the power and

INTERNATIONAL MASTER OF SOLO PERFORMANCE
SHYLOCK
Under Milk wood
As one of only two Jewish male characters in the
whole of Shakespeare, Shylock (Merchant of Venice)
has always divided opinion. Is he a villain or a victim?
by Dylan Thomas
Made famous by Richard Burton’s legendary
recording in 1954, Guy Masterson (Burton’s
nephew) brings Under Milk Wood to vivid
life on stage.
This award winning, poignant, powerful yet
humorous performance brings us Shylock afresh in
one of the most globally successful solo shows of the
last decade.
Celebrating a day in the life of
‘Llareggub’ - a small seatown
somewhere in Wales - all 69
inhabitants in Dylan Thomas’
timeless masterpiece are
hilariously recreated in an
amazing feat of memory and
virtuosity.
Guy Masterson demonstrates his brilliance in a
performance that celebrates the beauty of language,
the power of history and the magic of theatre.
Shylock, for one performance only,
delivers everything you want from
theatre: an informative and thoughtprovoking story, a solid whack of
comedic entertainment and a stunning
display of talent.
This astonishing solo
performance, premièred
in 1994, has played more
than 2000 times all over the
world, enchanting audiences
wherever it’s been staged. For
one performance only, Under
Milk Wood is a stellar Festival
offering.

something exceptional!”

GLOBE THEATRE DUNEDIN
Mary S uart
by Friedrich Schiller - in a new version by Keith Scott
One of history’s most famous struggles for power and survival Elizabeth of England and Mary Queen of Scots. A story of
deceit, entrapment, cunning, courage and fear.
Friedrich Schiller’s political thriller explodes
on to the stage in the Globe Theatre’s
première production of an exciting
new version by Dunedin historian
and playwright Keith Scott.
“Just been listening
to that stupid bastard
I took myself for
thirty years ago…”
So begins the last recording of Krapp, a white
faced, purple nosed old man with an amazing
shock of grey hair. Samuel Beckett’s love of
vaudeville clowns and silent movie comics is
brilliantly realised in this magical work.

Krapp’s Last Tape was a favourite of Beckett,
one of the 20th century’s most influential
writers. The premise is simple. Each year on the
eve of his birthday Krapp makes a recording in
an attempt to archive his life. Today he listens
to his 39-year-old self and things begin to shift.
Award winning director Jonathon Hendry
teams up with one of Dunedin’s great actors,
Simon O’Connor, to bring this funny and
haunting one-man play to the Fortune. The
Murray Hutchinson Studio will be transformed
into Krapp’s den during a late evening in a
mysterious future. A world filled with life’s
detritus, reels of tape, shifting memories and a
seemingly endless supply of bananas.

Dunedin Symphony Orchestra brings its 50th anniversary year to a climax with the world
première of the latest major work by prolific New Zealand composer, Dunedin’s Anthony
Ritchie. Gallipoli to the Somme takes its title from Alexander Aitken’s book written about
his war experiences in the Otago Batallion. Aitken’s perspective binds the structure of the
composition together. A fine violinist, Aitken took his instrument to war with him and the
sound of his solo violin pervades the piece.
Gallipoli to the Somme is a humanist statement that also draws on ordinary people’s
experience of the war through diary entries, poems, traditional texts, songs, and even a
military plan of battle. The three works in the first half, by French, English and German
composers respectively, also reflect the experiences of ordinary people during the war.
The concert features two favourite Dunedin singers both of whom have careers on the
international opera stage: soprano Anna Leese and
bass Martin Snell. They are joined by City Choir
Dunedin and the Southern Youth Choir.
The conductor is London-based Simon Over, the
orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor. Following
this world première of Gallipoli to the Somme, he
will conduct the UK première in London with the Southbank Sinfonia and Parliament Choir.

Conchord
Ensemble
On their New Zealand debut tour, The London
Conchord Ensemble bring to the Festival their
fresh communicative style that has won an
international following.
Sometimes referred to as “The London Supergroup”, the
ensemble plays with panache, wit and discreet sensitivity in
performances that are a constant joy.
This superb UK collective of musicians including audience favourite, violinist Daniel
Rowland from the Brodsky Quartet, will perform two concerts at the Glenroy: a
relaxed family-friendly performance that introduces the colours and combinations
of eight different musical instruments including music by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven,
Poulenc and Stravinsky; and an evening concert that epitomises the meaning of
kaleidoscopes with a programme that explores a myriad of colours and ensemble
combinations for wind, strings and piano.

Step into the fluorescent glare of 21st century
office life and experience the fiendishly funny songs of Sir Noël Coward in a whole
new light.
Accompanied by Terence Dennis, singer and former office worker Jason Henderson

bare the trials and tribulations of modern office life to provide a new and entertaining
setting for Coward’s elegant and erudite songs of the 1920s - 1960s.

SCHUBERTIADE
The series closes with a celebration of the music of Franz Schubert. During
Schubert’s lifetime and throughout the 19th century, musicians, poets, dancers and
other Schubertophiles gathered in private homes for informal performances of his
works. Our modern day Schubertiade is a purely musical event and features some of
Dunedin’s finest musicians; La Belle Alliance (violinist Tessa Petersen and pianist John
Van Buskirk), Munich born soprano, Goeknil Meryem Biner, pianist Tom McGrath and
clarinettist, Stephen Cranefield.

The cavernous lofty space that is St Paul’s
Cathedral, will become a sound box with
musical notes reverberating off walls and
apexes, from hidden recesses and porticos as Sonic Psalms II surrounds its audience
in an experimental wash of sound and light. This fusion, performed by the St Paul’s
Cathedral Choir together with trail blazing composer Kerian Veraine and sound
artists Emily Smith and William Henry Meung, will be a sonic adventure and the final
curtain call for the 2016 Festival.

Frank Gordon
30 Sep - 14 Oct
Through the Trees sets contemporary artist
Kirstin Carlin (b. 1979) on a collision course with
one of Dunedin’s favourite daughters, Frances
Hodgkins. Interested in the familiar tropes of art
history and image production, Carlin’s paintings
both celebrate and unravel some of the painterly
strategies deployed by Hodgkins. This new
exhibition brings Carlin’s new paintings together
with a selection of works by Hodgkins from the
collection of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
Dunedin artist Frank Gordon’s much
anticipated exhibition Botanical
includes nature, botany, colour, bold
lines and big, beautiful people! His
signature flying figures are inspired
by Old Masters and Pre-Raphaelites,
whilst the settings reference William
Morris and the Arts and Crafts
movement, both heavily influenced
by nature and botanical themes.

Jenni Stringleman
30 Sep - 14 Oct
Douglas Gordon
27 Aug 2016 - 19 Feb
2017
Paradise is Auckland artist Jenni
Stringleman’s first solo show, featuring
paintings which explore the joy we get
from our backyard utopia. Vibrant, often
large scale works feature thick oils applied
over energetic acrylic underpainting. Palm
trees, tropical plants and oversized blooms
are seen as if through a kaleidoscope
or cropped and amplified with Jenni’s
signature style utilising her paint knives.
Slices of hot neon paint are combined with
slabs of bright pastel tones or moody blues
to provide contrast.
For the monumental installation
Play Dead; Real Time, Scottish
artist Douglas Gordon filmed
a circus elephant obeying
a series of commands. Like
many of Gordon’s protagonists, the elephant is subject to forces beyond its control.
Simultaneously presenting several different versions of the scene, in front and rear
projections and on a monitor, the work depicts the event from a range of perspectives
rather than from a single static viewpoint.

Yuki Kihara’s artworks interrogate the multiple histories of
Pasifika nations and can be seen in collections from Auckland
to Los Angeles. Her 2015 series Study of a Samoan Savage
addressed the ways Pasifika bodies and cultures have been,
and continue to be, objectified and commodified. The
immediacy of digital media provides a way for Kihara to
explore how past and future cultural traditions intersect in the
present. Elements of performance and dance combine with
theories of the gaze to establish an uneasy, yet compelling,
relationship between the viewer and the artwork.

Alchemy is the art form liberating something from its fixed physical properties, a creative
discipline, a transmutation of energies and transmutation of self. A grand personal experiment
performed with critical introspection and objective investigation. The relationship to inward
flowing content is greatly increased and through the process the self is regenerated and
liberated, creating an interrelationship between mind and matter, between self and world. You
are the world and the world is you. By changing yourself, you change everything.
