The April Program: Mini Auction
President’s Message - April, 2016
I wanted to take a minute to recognize a few
people, again. What a wonderful job Terry Hock,
Dave Hock, and Bud Glass did on the weather
station. Every day, I look out on to the field and
admire what the Club has put together over the
years. We have people commenting all the time how
nice it is to get real-time (every 5 minutes) date on
the weather and see if there are flyers at the field.
One problem though. We have no one to wipe the
snow off the camera lens. Well, I guess we’ll let
Mother Nature take care of that. I saw Bud Glass’s
You Tube Video, “Snow Day at the Aerodrome”. It
was very well done. Thank you Bud. If you notice
on the video, there was a guest enjoying himself
blowing snow out of the pits. Thank you Tom Elliot!

March 2nd, 2016 Jefco Aeromod’lers R/C Club Business Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by President
Peter Thompson at 7:05 PM. There were 39
attendees.
PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS: President Thompson
turned the mic over to Terry Hock who introduced Bud
Glass’ video of the weather station installation. Terry
Hock took this opportunity to announce that we now
have an operational weather station at Chatfield State
Park at the Jefco Aeromod’lers Aerodrome. He
recognized some of the key players that made this
possible. Bud Glass made the mast and fabricated the
mounting to the shed. Lora Knowlton set up the internet
account. Dave Hock made the webcam housing from a
weatherproof flood light fixture. President Thompson and
Art Wilson assisted with the overall installation. Terry
himself was responsible for all the electronics, web
browser presentation and the handling of the data and
its communication. The highlights of the weather station
data is that we can get average and peak wind
information and a picture of the site from the webpage.
The webpage updates every 5 minutes, so to get the
latest information press the reload button on your web
browser. Terry said the link to the site is http://

President Thompson then asked Bruce Ream to present
an update on the Shea Homes discussions. Bruce reports
that the Long Range Planning Committee’s (LRPC)
meeting with Shea Homes has been very positive. Bruce
and John Park were representing the LRPC. They told
Shea Homes that we have received approval from the
Board, from our membership, from the Park and from
the Corps of Engineers. After Shea representatives
looked at the drawing John Park had prepared the
comment was made that it looks like a win-win outcome
for both of us. Bruce stated that Shea Homes will not be
moving dirt for two or three years. A Memorandum of
Understanding will be put into writing so that each party
will know what is to be expected of them. President
Thompson thanked the LRPC for their work on behalf of
the Club.
THANK YOU FOR GUESTS and NEW MEMBERS: Sid
Gates introduced his guest Bob Smith. Bob has been in
the hobby for 59 years and has built a full size plane. He
moved here about 3 years ago from Michigan.
PROGRAM: Sid Gates presented his program “R/C
2.4GIG Radio Technology & Using Telemetry with the
Weatronic and FrSky Taranis radios.” Sid had spent a
considerable amount of time and effort producing a
video for the program. The comprehensive video
demonstrated programming setup of the radios, as well
as demonstrations of how both radios handled telemetry
information. Sid’s program started with the Weatronic
software which is quite extensive. Servos could be
programmed for the response time as well as
exponential. Flight data can be recorded on a memory
card so that the flight data can be reviewed later on a
computer. Sid said he is not advocating for either system.
Next Sid showed the operation of the Taranis transmitter.
First he showed how the transmitter could display the
receiver battery voltage on the telemetry screen. He has
set a voltage alarm so that when the receiver voltage
drops below a certain value it will give him a spoken
warning. The transmitter also displays the signal strength
as seen by the receiver as well as the air speed from the
air speed sensor Sid had installed. Sid could also set
alarms for signal strength and air speed.
Sid moved onto the lipo battery sensor. It plugs into the
balance port on the battery so that it can sense
individual cell voltages, as well as the overall battery
voltage. The transmitter not only displays the voltages,
but it can give a spoken warning if the voltage is below a
user-defined value. You can set a separate critical
voltage to trigger an even more urgent warning. A
question was raised about how long it took Sid to learn
the programming. Sid said there are 50 to 100 videos on
Youtube explaining the programming features. He says
he has been able to find a video that covers anything he
wants to do.
Sid’s last demonstration was the altitude sensor. He sets
the altitude to zero by pressing a button. This is useful
when taxiing out for takeoff since you can set the
runway as zero altitude, and any report of altitude will be
giving your vertical distance above the runway.
Sid mentioned that you can set nearly unlimited alarms
limits and servo functions for each plane, and you can
assign switches to turn the audio alarms on and off. That
way the audio reports will not be distracting while you
are flying.
SECRETARY’S REPORT: Lee Taylor motioned to accept
the February general meeting minutes as published in
the March newsletter. The motion was seconded by Sid
Gates and carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Lora Knowlton presented the
club’s financials. She reported income and expense and
net income for February. She reported that the net
auction income was about half that of last year. Lora
passed the detailed report binder around for examination
by any interested members. A motion to accept the
report was made by Larry Fagan and seconded by Bruce
Riley. The motion carried.
MEMBERSHIP: Lora Knowlton reported that we have
208 active members, 18 life members and 2 pending
awaiting their AMA numbers.
FIELD MAINTENANCE AND RUNWAY: President
Thompson reported in Bob Willdigg’s absence. Bob has

President’s Comments:
• Implementation Protocol – Start Up Benches.
President Thompson reported hearing complaints
about not approaching the membership before
moving the start-up benches. Other Board members
reported hearing members commenting that they like
the new locations and the extra safety that they
afford.
• Mini Auction
President Thompson stated that the mini-auction will
be held during the general meeting April 6th. He also
reported that a lady will bring some R/C equipment
to donate to the mini-auction. President Thompson
asked the Board members to be on the lookout for
her arrival and to assist in unloading her vehicle.
Secretary’s Report: Art Wilson motioned to accept
the February Board meeting minutes published in the
March newsletter. The motion was seconded by Ron
Ratcliffe and carried.
Treasurer’s Report: Lora Knowlton was absent, so
no report.
Committee Reports:
• Membership Report: No report.
• Field Maintenance & Runways: President
Thompson reported in Bob Willdigg’s absence. SealTec has presented the club with a proposal for crack
filling of 4720 linear feet of cracks. Seal-Tec also
added a proposal for sealcoating 57,528 sq. ft. of
runway. Steve Rosselot motioned to spend $2270.00
for cleaning, preparing and crack filling 4720 of
cracks per Seal-Tec’s proposal dated 3-6-16. The
motion was seconded by Kevin Furman and passed
unanimously.
• Safety: Steve Rosselot had nothing new to report. A
discussion ensued about pilots taxiing down the
sidewalk past the pit fences and into the public
viewing area on the way to the parking lot. After
some deliberation Kevin Furman motioned to update
the safety manual to prohibit taxiing in the pits. The
motion was seconded by Art Wilson and passed
unanimously.
• Flight Instruction / Training: Rob Brandi, Chair No report submitted.
• Events: President Thompson will follow up with
Bruce Robson to be the mini-auction auctioneer.
• Program Coordinator: Larry Fagan stated that
Terry Hock is very interested in giving a weather 5
station update, and explaining some of the technology
that went into setting up the station. President
Thompson said we have not had the Park Rangers
attend the general meeting for some time. Perhaps we
should invite them to the May meeting. The May
program will be determined at a future date.
Old/Unfinished Business: This will be the last update
about the weather station before taking it off old
business. Terry Hock has ordered an additional solar
panel just for the weather station after an outage
occurred when the battery was completely drained.
President Thompson reports that Bruce Riley is checking
into insurance coverage for our auction and field
equipment.
New Business: President Thompson asked for a motion
to approve the Events Schedule. The motion to accept
was made by Ron Ratcliffe and seconded by Steve
Rosselot. The motion passed unanimously.
President Thompson would like to discuss the amount we
are willing to spend for a new taxiway. He’d like the Long
Range Planning Committee (LRPC) to look into costs and
feasibility. Larry Fagan has copies of the original LRPC’s
proposal and will send copies to the Board members.
President Thompson reports that the Colorado State
Parks now have a new logo. Lora Knowlton will put the
new logo on our next printing of the safety manual.
Kevin Furman said he will ask Lora for an editable copy
of the safety manual to that he can add proposed
language about not taxiing in the pits.
Motion to Adjourn: A motion to adjourn was made by
Steve Rosselot and was seconded by Glenn Lee. The
motion carried at 8:20 P.M.

been in contact with Shawn at Seal-Tech and Shawn will
assess the runway and provide a quote/proposal. Bob
says we will likely need to fix cracks, not seal the entire
runway.
SAFETY: Steve Rosselot had nothing to report.
President Thompson reported that we moved the startup stands to discourage taxiing in the pits.
FLIGHT INSTRUCTION / TRAINING: President
Thompson reported in Rob Brandi’s absence. He has
nothing new to report at this time.
Events: Paul McIntosh reports that the first field
cleanup will be May 7 with about one a month thereafter.
On May 14 the Club will host Scouts for an introduction
into R/C flying. Warbirds Over Denver will be June 10 12 followed by the Ranger fun-fly July 13th. The Mile-Hi
Pylon Racing Event will be held August 6-7. Volunteers
are needed for this exciting event. The Old Farts Fun-Fly
will be held sometime in August. Early in September will
be a new event, Cubs and Cousins Fun-Fly. Any model of
a high wing single engine plane, such as a de Havilland
Beaver, Citabria, Aeronca Champion, Sedan or Chief to
name a few. “Any plane that looks like a Cub or can be
mistaken for a Cub”. Paul asked if anyone would be
interested in an Electric Fun Fly, many people raised
their hands. Paul wrapped up his report by stating he
would like to see a Heli Fun-Fly event this year as well.
He’d love to hear from any Heli flyers that would be
interested in such an event.
PROGRAMMING: President Thompson reported that
the April meeting will be the Mini-Auction. We may invite
the Park Rangers for the May general meeting. Terry
Hock is also very interested in giving a weather station
update, and explaining some of the technology that
went into setting up the station. This should be a most
interesting presentation. The June program will be
presented by Lora and Doug Knowlton. The topic is yet
to be determined.
OLD/UNFINISHED BUSINESS: There was none.
NEW BUSINESS:
Flying Rules Update: President Thompson said the club
safety manual is still being reviewed for possible changes
to address certain safety concerns at the field.
Youth Programs: President Thompson reported that the
Club is working with the Boy Scouts. He noted the Scout
event scheduled in May as reported by Paul McIntosh
under Events above.
Start Up stands and Taxi Way addition: President
Thompson reported that the Board is looking at the cost
of a taxiway between the pits and the E-W runway
parallel to the E-W runway. This was part of the proposal
presented by the LRPC last year.
SHOW AND TELL: Terry Hock showed his HSD Jet
Foamie beginner jet that he purchased at the AMA Expo.
This is a very nice looking jet and is reported to fly very
nicely. He has never had a jet but has always wanted
one. It has a 75mm fan and uses a 3300mAh 6 cell
battery. He says HSD has a reputation for quality at a
reasonable price.
Next up was Bruce Ream with his Fokker D VIII. This is
the plane he brought to the January meeting, but now it
is covered with Solartex and finished. He started it
August 12th and finished it two weeks ago. The pilot’s
head turns in concert with the rudder and ailerons. Dave
Gianakos made the very realistic dummy rotary engine
cylinders. The machine guns are kits from Balsa USA,
Fiberglass Specialties supplied the cowl, the interiors and
leather grommets are from Arizona Modelers, the wheels
and step from Proctor, and the waist band graphic was
supplied by Norm Berger. All other graphics are Solartex
on Solartex. The plane weighs 16 pounds and is powered
by a 1.80 Saito engine. He plans to fly it this spring.
DRAWING: Dave Hock reported the drawing items were
supplied by Action Hobbies at 11805 W Colfax Avenue in
Lakewood.
MOTION to ADJOURN: A motion to adjourn was made
by Dave Hock and the meeting adjourned at 8:48 P.M.

school location). Board meetings are held the third Wed. night of each month,
