he generous gifts from donors to the Summa Foundation continue
to build the momentum for innovation in research, education, patient care
and community benefit at Summa Health System. This momentum has
fostered countless initiatives that have a direct impact on the well-being
of residents of the Akron region and beyond.
Since its inception in 1976, the Summa Foundation has worked to promote
a dynamic environment where healthcare innovation, collaboration and
discovery are encouraged. Over the years, financial support from our donors
has constructed buildings, educated physicians and nurses in leading-edge
technology, and provided state-of-the-art medical equipment to advance
patient care and treat illnesses.
Devised over 400 years ago by French physicist Abbé Mariotte, the so-named
Newton’s Cradle demonstrates energy and momentum. It is the momentum generated
by our donors that allows the Summa Foundation to remain a body in motion.

Here are just a few of the tangible returns that are a direct result of your support last year…
In 2008, support from our donors helped fund a nursing research project that is currently receiving national
attention. Recently published in the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, the study describes how a team of
healthcare professionals at Summa Akron City Hospital significantly lowered – and nearly eliminated – a
commonly acquired hospital infection for patients on ventilators by reducing oral bacteria. Outcomes of
this study resulted in savings of more than $2 million over the past three years at Summa’s hospitals.
Financial support from Summa Foundation donors last year also helped train physicians and lay leaders in
the Stanford University model of Chronic Disease Self-Management. Developed as a series of physicianand peer-led workshops, the program is designed to help people with chronic diseases such as diabetes and
hypertension gain self-confidence in their ability to control their symptoms and understand how their health
problems affect their lives. It also results in substantial healthcare cost savings, because program participants
make fewer visits to the emergency room, have fewer hospital admissions and shorter hospital stays.
Our collaboration with regional partners such as The University of Akron, Northeastern Ohio Universities
Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, Akron General Health System and Akron Children’s Hospital led
to the creation of the BioInnovation Institute in Akron (BIIA) in 2008, supported with grants from the
Knight Foundation, the Third Frontier Ohio Research Scholars Program and First Energy. The BIIA
will establish Akron as leader in the biomaterials field as it cultivates the area’s strengths in healthcare,
research and education.
Opened to patients on October 1, 2008, the state-of-the-art Jean B. and Milton N. Cooper Cancer Center
integrates the latest technology in detection measures, treatments, support services and research facilities
for cancer patients and their families. In 2008, the Summa Foundation’s Cancer fundraising initiative
raised $2.5 million, bringing total donations to $6.2 million.
We are grateful to our donors for helping the Summa Foundation transform the spirit of
philanthropy into direct positive action. Much of what is accomplished by the Summa Foundation
would not be possible without the support and encouragement from our benefactors.We look forward
to the future and the inherent possibilities resulting from this growing momentum.

Annual Giving
Summa Foundation’s Annual Giving program provides
philanthropic supporters the opportunity to help build
the programs, projects and services that benefit our
patients. Friends, businesses, grateful patients, foundations
and board members join Summa employees and medical
staff to give generously each year to the Summa
Foundation in support of areas in medical education
and research where the need is greatest. The result is
quality, compassionate care that is available to our broad

Cancer Center
When the Jean B. and Milton N. Cooper Cancer Center at Summa Akron City Hospital
opened its doors on October 1, 2008, it was hailed not only as a central point for treatment,
but for offering comprehensive care services such as support groups, pain management,
nutrition information, rehabilitation services, and access to social workers, cancer-care
coordinators and psychological counseling. To date, $6.2 million has been raised in an
$8.25 million campaign to support programs, equipment and medical education within the
center. This list includes gifts received from January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.

Sapphire Ball
The Sapphire Ball is Summa Health System’s premier black tie gala. In the past eight years, the Ball has raised more
than $2 million to support capital projects at Summa Hospitals. In 2008, under the leadership of Chair Donna K.
Loomis, and with nearly 700 of Akron’s medical, civic and community leaders in attendance, the Sapphire Ball
contributed its proceeds to benefit the new Cooper Cancer Center. The Cooper Cancer Center was dedicated to
the memory of Jean B. Cooper that evening and opened in October of 2008. We are honored to list here all event

Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital’s Foundation Board
hosted “California Dreamin’,” a wine tasting and dinner
featuring renowned winemaker Jim Clendenen, at
Papa Joe’s. Co-chaired by Dr. Hugh McLaughlin and
his wife, Kim, the event raised more than $45,000 for
the hospital’s Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education
Endowment Fund, which provides educational support
