Network Background Recent Progress Future Plans Ian Procyk, VE7HHS For NSARC – Feb 17th 2011 Kelowna Firestorm 2003 BCWARN - the BC Wireless Amateur Radio Network Grew out of discussions amongst the Coquitlam, Burnaby and New Westminster Amateur Radio Clubs… How to provide a resilient and dependable, non-profit and amateur radio driven communications capability in the event of a major disaster? BCWARN initially conceived as high speed IP backbone to provide EOC’s and fix/portable users with telnet access to Winlink As more sites came online service grew to include all the typical things one does with a LAN: File sharing, VOIP, video, APRS i-gates, D-STAR, and of course internet access… Future Uses: Radio-over-IP (maybe used first in Island Trunk System) VOIP???? The first BCWARN test link was 75km. Proving out the path to Victoria (PEP) Temporary equipment setup on Salt Spring Island It worked! Sumas Mtn 2007 Vancouver General Hospital (in prep for freshet flooding) (in support of high speed access for Sun Run command) BCWARN is a collection of non-profit amateur radio groups that are working together to build and operate communications links which can help enhance public safety when used at the municipal and regional level by our served agencies . Shown above, the TELUS Telephone Pioneers Amateur Radio club is one of our most valuable team members, with access to hardened mountaintop sites that help span the distance between communities. KP2X Mt Sumas Washington repeater site–, interested in a Wi-Fi node for Whatcom County and a link to SFU/Seymour Wi-Fi repeater site for redundancy, investigating. ! Blaine, WA Police Department – interested in 1.2g D-star data and a potential BCWARN node, investigating. ! Fraser Valley ARC - Sumas Mtn repeater site. NSARC – interested, investigating Delta Club - interested, investigating Squamish ARC & SAR VCH and Fraser Health CVARS Various Clubs in the BC Interior ! ! ! ! ! ! •Backup WAN connectivity to BCWARN •Ku-band Satellite access with IP-Access International as provider •Idirect modem capable of up to 30Mbps Short Term •Increase coverage of the Lower Mainland BCWARN network •Increase the core technical team size •Bring Nanaimo Amateur Radio Assn onto the network •Bring SEPAR (Surrey) onto the network •Testing integration of Satellite Trailer into BCWARN as last resort internet backbone Medium Term •Encourage clubs to implement additional nodes in the Upper Fraser Valley, Whatcom County and Southern Vancouver Island. •Complete path to Squamish/Whistler •Research and integrate additional technologies Long Term •Link to interior & interior ring
