To highlight all aspects of the programming and events that take place at The ACT Arts Centre, you’ll see we’ve simplified our name in our refreshed logo and created complementary logos for each of our program divisions to better identify them. The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council operates the facility and delivers these programs along with many more community initiatives and access programs. We have a great team that works together to provide vibrant Arts and Culture in the community for all. Over the last two seasons, our ACT Presents performance series has been recognized by both provincial and national Presenter of the Year awards. This year’s lineup promises to be just as exciting, including 28 performances by 25 artists or companies plus 8 films—providing something for every age and interest. Attending live performances is recognized by Canadians not only as first and foremost a fun and entertaining experience, but an activity that also provides emotional, intellectual and even spiritual stimulation—as well as an opportunity to learn and experience something new. This presentation reveals some intriguing contrasts in the approach to each work, as well as the individual `hand’ of its creator. FAN comprises a highly accomplished group of quilters, who regularly show their work in both Canada and the US. Now in its sixth year, our ever-popular Ensemble show has evolved into a much anticipated annual event. Featuring small ensembles of art and fine craft in all mediums, this exhibition is inevitably full of delightful surprises and opportunities for inspired Christmas shopping. Iceland Unbound Alexandra Edmonds October 17–November 14 Emerging artist, Alexandra Edmonds, was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in an artist residency in Siglufjordur, a small fishing town in northern Iceland. The resultant series of paintings attempts to capture what Edmonds describes as “a prehistoric and alien landscape without a great deal of human footprint.” Edmonds renders every sky, surface and crevice with a straightforward honesty that belies any attempt to romanticize the starkly majestic terrain. Untitled (Triangle Block I) Amelia Epp Paper, Acrylic Paint Exhibition Under Development Aaron Moran and Amelia Epp January 9–February 27 Mixed media artists Aaron Moran and Amelia Epp share the space in an experimental project that includes an exciting new commissioned component. Both artists draw on an aesthetic that involves the re-purposing of materials to evoke new associations and visual appeal. Tidal Pull Laurie Rolland and Jane Duford-Johnston March 5–April 23, 2015 Ceramic artist Laurie Rolland and painter Jane Duford-Johnston both observe humankind’s imprint on sea and shoreline with images of ocean-going vessels, and the mysterious life forces within the sea. While Duford-Johnston’s work surrounds the gallery space with dream-like ocean vistas, Rolland contemplates the boat as a metaphor for refuge and safe passage. Both artists reflect on the pull of the tide, while Rolland’s often enigmatic pieces show clear feminine parallels to the ongoing rhythms of the natural world. 2015/2016 EXHIBITION SPONSOR OPENING RECEPTIONS SUPPORTED BY THE ACT ARTS CENTRE 2015/2016 | theactmapleridge.org | 604.476.2787 | 36 2015/2016 Exhibition Program Places and Spaces Garibaldi Art Club April 30–June 4 The Garibaldi Art Club never fails to attract new fans with each show, and we’re always happy to welcome them back. For this special juried exhibition, local artists are asked to focus on their travels near and far, so that paintings that are alternately familiar and exotic are showcased in close and sometimes unexpected proximity. Confluence: Artists-in-Residence Exhibition Kat Wahamaa, Rebecca Fisher, Robi Smith June 11–July 2 All three of our Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Artistsin-Residence connect with the natural world for inspiration, information and materials. Using mixed media (Wahamaa), textiles (Fisher) and painting/ mixed media (Smith), each artist gives expression to their appreciation of the relatedness of all things, also described as a confluence. The Origin of a Myth Zoran Malinovski July 9–August 6 The eight exhibitions we have curated for the coming year have been conceived to uphold both quality and diversity, two of the primary touchstones for the art gallery’s programming. In this year’s line-up we will feature textile art, ceramics, painting, mixed media, drawing and, everything at once in our annual Christmas show and sale, Ensemble. If you have yet to have attend one of our opening receptions, you’ll want to make a date to do so this year, so you can meet the artists and join a conversation that is open to all! Barbara Duncan GA LLERY CUR ATOR Glenn Gould Jenny Perry Mixed fibres Through a multitude of drawings and mixed media pieces, Zoran Malinovski closely observes the intricacies of apparently opposing qualities. The realism of the original subject is preserved while it is simultaneously transformed into a fantastic representation of itself. Malinovski’s prodigious drawing skills are everywhere in evidence as he translates images and ideas from his fantastic imagination onto paper. For more information call 604.476.4240.
