This Year marks the 30th anniversary of the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, and a time of reflection for those of us who
work to carry out the mission of this organization.
Over the years, we have had the opportunity to hear from many people impacted by the work of the MATHCOUNTS
Foundation. We have met students who never liked math until they participated in the program, and teachers who
created their own curriculum using only MATHCOUNTS materials. We have come across engineers whose participation in
MATHCOUNTS piqued their interest in math and laid the foundation for their careers. And while it is clear to us that this
program means different things to different people, the important thing is that, for all of them, it matters.
Garnering success in math can be challenging, but it represents the most rewarding kind of challenge—one that can open
doors, break down barriers and inspire creativity and innovation. Math is important because it empowers people to reach
their full potential and change the world for the better.
We are committed to broadening perceptions of what is possible through math. With the launch of the Interactive
MATHCOUNTS Platform, the release of a challenging new textbook and the setting of an incredible Guinness World Record
this year, MATHCOUNTS continues to push students and educators to experience math in creative and exciting ways.
We are extremely grateful to the partners, volunteers and alumni who
provide invaluable support to the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, and we
look forward to another 30 years of expanding opportunities for all
U.S. students.

“When 244 Mathletes get
MATH WITHOUT LIMITS: Guinness World Record Set
Math can be the foundation of incredible achievements above and beyond the confines of the classroom. This year,
MATHCOUNTS showed that when students are empowered with math, curiosity and a passion for learning, their opportunities
are endless. On Friday, May 10th, at the 2013 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington, DC, 244
MATHCOUNTS students used math to make history. Together with 61 math coaches and 20 MATHCOUNTS volunteers, they
set the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to construct a human formation of Pascal’s Triangle.
This challenging task, involving 325 people and numbers between one and 2,704,156, was completed in just six minutes, 16
seconds and 5.7 tenths of a second. These outstanding students, teachers and volunteers showed how truly amazing—and
fun—math can be.

Fostering Talent in Tomorrow’s Leaders: Competition program
Over 107,000 middle school students from 5,362 schools nationwide engaged in math that was exciting, fun and challenging
as part of the MATHCOUNTS Competition Program. Starting at the school level and progressing through local and state
competitions, talented students with a passion for math competed against their peers from other schools and honed their
problem- solving and critical thinking skills.

The top 12 scoring students earned
a spot in the Countdown Round, the
exciting finale of the Competition
Program and a showcase of some of
the country’s best young
mathematicians. The 2013 National
Champion and recipient of the
Donald G. Weinert College
Scholarship was Alec Sun, an
eighth-grade student from
Massachusetts. Sun was also the
first student ever to make it into the
national-level Countdown Round
three years in a row. Since winning,
he has appeared on Live! With
Kelly and Michael and
Good Morning America.

CollaborationCounts
Empowering All Students to Succeed: Club Program
This year, thousands of educators received free, high-quality resources to help turn their students into life-long math
learners through the MATHCOUNTS Club Program. Sponsored by the Northrop Grumman Foundation, the Club Program
gave over 139,000 students across the country the opportunity to experience math that was far from typical. Whether using
the engineering process to create their own board games, or learning which types of graphs would be used in their own
real-life scenarios, math club students applied math in practical and fun ways.
Successful clubs with a high level of student-participation can attain Silver Level Status, and then can strive for Gold Level
Status, the highest level of recognition in the Club Program. This year, over 800 Silver and Gold Level schools earned awards
and entry into prize drawings. Swanson Middle School in Arlington, VA won this year’s Gold Level Grand Prize Drawing; the
club won a $500 gift card and a trip for four students and the club sponsor to the 2013 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National
Competition.

Transforming Project-Based Learning: Reel Math Challenge
This year’s Reel Math Challenge pushed students to see math in new and creative ways as they worked in teams to produce
videos showing the real-world application of a math concept. This innovative new program, sponsored by the Department
of Defense, gave students the opportunity to develop essential 21st century skills, such as technological proficiency, critical
thinking, communication and collaboration.
The 20 semi-finalist videos were chosen by general public voting, and then a panel of MATHCOUNTS judges selected the four
finalists. The team members who produced the finalist videos received a Droid DNA, generously donated by HTC, and an
all-expenses-paid trip to the 2013 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition, where the 224 national competitors voted
for the winning video. This year’s winning video was Where’s Waldorf? produced by the Soda Fountain Team from California.
Each team member won a $1,000 college scholarship, and their video is now featured as one of over 550 student-produced
videos in the Reel Math Challenge archive, a free education resource.
